Cody was upset with her, she could tell by the way the Tauros tossed his head and flicked his tails agitatedly. He’d been upset with her from the moment she’d coerced him into coming with her out of the Academy by walking straight out without asking his opinion. He’d been gifted to her when he was much younger and she’d first gotten to the Academy and he’d taken it upon himself to be the protector of this small child…of course said small child hadn’t made it very easy on him when she’d decided to simply up and leave the safety of the Academy one night and not tell anyone. He’d tried to stop her, tried to herd her back towards the Academy but each time a stubborn streak very few were privy too reared its head and he was met with defiance. It frustrated the bull and caused him to stamp his feet at her but Zenzie would merely narrow her eyes at him and stamp her foot once and it’d be enough. He blew a harsh breath from his nose and stopped, displeased that they were traveling this route when the sun was slowly setting.
Small little tiny Zenzie sat atop of him, snuggled up to his neck and murmuring soft words of comfort as he paused restlessly at the edge of Littleroot. After a moment of coaxing he obeyed and continued on, carrying his charge reluctantly into route 101 with a soft huff and a flick of his tails once more. She pet his soft warm coat the whole time, murmuring soft words of thanks and gratitude. It always seemed to surprise the bull that no matter how innocent she seemed, his human was very smart for her young age…and had gone through many things. That particular reminder of her past always made him toss his head agitatedly and Zenzie murmured more comforting words, feeling her tauros’ change in emotion. Zenzie didn’t mind what she’d been through though, didn’t mind that grownups lost a place in her life until recently after the Ranger Academy had taken her in. She was somewhat content with her life now, especially with Cody by her side so what did she care what others thought…let alone grownups. All she needed was Cody…and maybe a few other pokemon friends.

Cody heard the footsteps long before he saw the other human on the road. It made the tauros antsy and his head swung to look at the other human closely, it was male and far older than his own little human. The male seemed to be a trainer of some sort but he couldn’t tell, the dimming light of the sun playing havoc on the tauros’ sight. He let out a harsh breath and stamped his foot, warning away the young man as a pulse of protectiveness washed over him. Noticing the shift in her pokemon’s demeanor Zenzie blinked and sat up on her tauros, immediately catching sight of the young man not far from them. She held her small teddy bear closer to her and hunkered down lower on tauros’ neck, trying to avoid eye contact with the boy. She’d seen a lot of trainers get aggressive and want to fight whenever their eyes met someones else’s but Zenzie didn’t want to fight, it was why she left at night. Besides the other Ranger’s wouldn’t think to look for her at night because they’d always warned her against it.
The tauros tossed his head again, tails whipping about as he watched the human boy closely and allowed its nose to flare as it took in his scent. Zenzie glanced down at her pokemon, murmuring softly to get him to calm down a bit since she knew Tauros’ were usually aggressive especially around young ones. She’d come to realize that Cody had taken to her as though she was his young and she had come to accept that wholeheartedly which was why a lot of the times she’d had to calm him down whenever someone got too close to her. After a moment of consideration she spoke up, her voice soft but flat as no emotion colored it save for a vague lilting accent. “Crescentia thinks you should stay there…Cody is too upset right now.” She was Crescentia…she spoke of herself in third person. A habit she’d begun early on in her years and had been unable to break even when the Rangers had tried to help her out of it.
She vaguely remembered someone referring to it as her way of putting up a wall around herself. Creating some distance even if it was only with words, between herself and others as a way to protect herself. When Zenzie thought of it like that, she supposed they were correct since it’d started when she first entered her first foster home. Her young mind locked those memories away though, deep within the recesses of her mind where she wouldn’t remember it until she was ready to. In the mean time she tried to sooth Cody little by little but kept her eyes on the young man that was far older than she.

This was why she hated adults…
Crescentia’s sanguine eyes darted up immediately, locking on the other male’s and narrowing in a way a child’s eyes shouldn’t know how to. Cody’s head lowered as his stance widened and he let out another harsh breath not liking this trainer in the least. This allowed Zenzie to easily slide off the bull pokemon, landing lightly on her feet as the dull heat of anger slowly blossomed in her small body. She hated adults…she hated people…She didn’t need them. Didn’t need anyone but Cody and any other pokemon that wanted to come with her. She watched as the other boy called out his pokemon and she only gave it a fleeting glance, her chin tilted up high not to look up at him but in defiance as she watched him call out his pokemon. Neither she nor Cody even flinched at the embers or heat the radiated from the pokemon, used to far worse and scarier looking pokemon than that of the anteater type.
Cody moved forward however when the other two drew closer, protectively placing his body between them and his human. He pawed at the ground and made low guttural irritated noises at the two, eyes watching them closely but refraining from attack unless they proved more of a threat. At the older male’s words the little girl blinked slowly in disbelief although nothing else gave that emotion away on her face. She was almost completely blank, save for the slow blink that ended with her speaking up flatly. “Zenzie knew grownups were stupid…but Zenzie didn’t realize just how much.” Her head tilted slightly to better see the male and give him a bland look as she continued to speak. “Zenzie didn’t tell you to do anything. Zenzie was warning you. A suggestion in order for your safety.” She emphasized each word, drawling them out to make her point clear as her eyes narrowed minutely again.
She ignored the jab to her age, more than used to it. The Rangers had been the only ones who hadn’t judged her potential based on her size and age for which she was grateful to them. Instead she simply continued to drawl out, “Zenzie has a duty as a Ranger in training to warn all those who cross her path that Zenzie’s Cody can be dangerous when agitated.” She didn’t speak like the usual children her age…then again she’d graduated school early, been called a genius even by some of her teachers…she didn’t want to be a genius just as she hadn’t wanted to be an orphan.

Zenzie wasn’t sure how to deal with the young man in front of her and it showed in the slightest downturn of her lips as she watched him. Even Cody had taken to just staring at the young man in confusion as he cursed and seemed to obsess over his hair. Her ruby red gaze flickered up to the anteater pokemon, taking in how it seamlessly picked up the mirror from its human without complaint. She wondered if this was a common occurrence before deciding she actually didn’t care if it was or not. Now that the young man was preoccupied with something else and Cody had calmed down in turn for watching in mild fascinated horror at the two, Zenzie decided it would be best to simply count their losses and leave. She didn’t care much for the young man’s town and his strange behavior made it hard for her to decide how to react. She wasn’t used to it and had never had to deal with something so…well weird. She didn’t want to deal with it either so in turn she turned away from the young man without a second look and pressed a hand against Cody’s side.
The Tauros made a soft snort, nudging her briefly with his snout before following her silent request and turning away. The young man was distracted, no longer cursing and seemed finished with his rude remarks when she had just been trying to be helpful. Therefore Zenzie saw no reason to continue this meaningless exchange, especially when Tauros’ temper had cooled. Reaching up a little ways she wrapped her hand as far as she could around Cody’s horn as though holding an adults hand and began walking as she threw over her shoulder, “Zenzie wishes you a good night. There is no point continuing when Zenzie doesn’t understand your actions. Grownups are too confusing.” Her honest opinion whether he liked it or not she could only hope this obviously easily irritated young man didn’t attempt to stop her but…luck didn’t seem to be on her side tonight as much as she wished it could be.

Zenzie stopped in her steps as she caught the young man’s words, not understanding why older people tended to say that. Shortie. Princess. Things of the like. She didn’t understand that and she knew the context the young man used it in wasn’t meant to be complimenting but it made her turn anyway and consider him with dull red eyes. Cody stood tense by her, nudging her from time to time in hope of herding her farther down the path instead of back towards where the boy was. However, curiosity fell on her and her lips turned down words in a faint puzzled look as she took a few steps back towards the boy so that she wouldn’t have to raise her voice to be heard.
Granted the light was barely a wisp in the sky and no one was on the path but them so their voices echoed through the trees but all the same. The dark spooked her a bit and she didn’t want to raise her voice too much in case something came out of the dark. Not that she believed in monsters or the like, just that there were dangerous pokemon and she’d prefer not to get caught by them.
“Why do you say that…why call Zenzie ‘princess’? Zenzie is Crescentia.” She didn’t understand the point of it…why was it even supposed to be insulting if that was the manner he’d meant it in? Simplicity was easier to understand. Did everything get so complicated when people grow up? She sighed softly and was sure that if it’d been possible she’d probably be getting a headache right then and there. Perhaps she should have simply continued walking like Cody had been trying to get her to do instead of allowing her young inquisitive mind to get ahead of her and turning back to question the rationality of that…nickname? Term? What did adults call it again?

Zenzie felt her head cocking to the side in confusion as he spoke, explaining his reasoning and answering her question all in one go. The smallest hint of confusion marring her stoic features with the way her eyebrows furrowed just the tiniest bit. She perked a bit at the mention of his ‘gran’ wasn’t that…like a grandparent?? She always got a little curious about other people’s families considering she didn’t have one of her own but his words still brought confusion and the dull throb of irritation. She ran a distracted hand through her hair, considering her words and piecing them together to make sense to her mind enough that she wouldn’t feel so confused. As she did so she studied the older boy in front of her, the slight confused mar on her features only slightly lessening as she did so.
She shrugged after a moment, deciding while she slightly understood his reasoning wasn’t very sound therefore not worth her time to focus so intently on. She’d wasted enough and from the way Cody lightly tugged at her shirt told her what he thought about this. He wanted nothing more than to just leave already but she wanted to know something…or at least just tentatively ask about it because…did he have a family that was big or small. “Zenzie doesn’t see the sense in that but…okay.” She leaned against her pokemon after a moment before starting again, more slowly and tentative since she knew sometimes people became defensive and aggressive with personal questions. “You said ‘Gran’…do you live with your Gran?” She was probably just reading into the whole thing too much but…families always interested her considering everything she’d been through.

Zenzie listened to what the young man had to say in answer to her question, a small frown playing along her lips as she did so. The furrow between her eyebrows once more marring her delicate but stoic features as she listened. Did everyone think this way about their family?? Did everyone call their grandparent ‘hag’? A part of her was more than aware that this wasn’t the complete truth seeing as some of the Ranger’s that had been willing to care for her had spoken a little about their family but all the same it was a little disturbing to hear this young man be so crass and uncaring in terms of his family member. A small part of her was envious that this young man had something so precious yet seemed to take it for granted and she wanted nothing more than to be out of his presence suddenly. Anywhere would be better than being in this young man’s sight with his hateful attitude and harsh words. She really did hate grownups…
She sniffed lightly at his questions, turning to Cody and running a soothing hand down his coat as he pressed against her side. She knew he was comforting her far more than she was comforting or even calming him. It was the one reason she’d been gifted him in the first place but all the same it made her even more certain that she didn’t need anyone perhaps not even the Rangers. No one seemed to understand her or the reason she did things, it was best to keep everyone far far away from her then if that was the case. “Zenzie was simply curious. She doesn’t have family so it was a simple question.” No need to tell him everything so that should be enough to answer his question and perhaps make it so that she’d be able to just go. She didn’t like feeling so upset and she still couldn’t understand why she stayed for so long she’d have usually left by now. Her ruby gaze fell on the male and she tilted her head slightly, “Zenzie is sorry to have disturbed you. Is there any other question?”
If he didn’t have anything else to say…well then there was no other reason for her to stay. She apologized even though there was no need for her to but she didn’t like the taste leaving this conversation in a bad way left in her mouth.

Zenzie considered him for a long moment, debating why it was that…she didn’t particularly dislike the much older male but she couldn’t exactly say she liked him either. It was more of a tolerance, while his words had irritated her they hadn’t been things adults sometimes said to her granted it still reinforced her dislike of adults. It was fine though, she was used to adults making her want to flinch away from the idea of growing up as well. She wondered idly as she studied the male in front of her, what kind of adult she would make considering she didn’t even like other people. She sighed lightly and let go of any lingering irritation, deciding there wasn’t much else to say and that if they kept on talking her opinion of tolerance towards the male would probably fade away. She was tired and that meant she’d be getting annoyed fairly quickly, especially since Cody wasn’t the happiest pokemon in the world with her right now. So she glanced down towards the trails before looking back at the other male, her eyes narrowing just the slightest as him.
“Zenzie doesn’t know your name….” She just realized she’d given him her name but he’d never said his, it made just a slight spark of irritation ignite before it faded just as quickly when Cody kneeled next to her. With practiced ease, the little girl lifted herself up and on to him, settling down as her tauros stood back up and shook himself lightly with a harsh huff of exasperated air. She pet him soothingly before nodding towards the older male, “This one will go now. It’s dark and dangerous for both you and Zenzie.” With a soft click of her tongue she ushered Cody on, deciding that was enough of a goodbye…they were probably going the same way anyway so they’d meet each other again.
