■ what doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Magikarp could evolve, huh?[break][break]
This one thought floated through her mind as entered the Petalburg Woods. The prospect of something strong, something that was so physically different because of sheer strength... for somebody with a need to become stronger like Fidel, that was a huge opportunity for her. That, and now, at her disposal...[break][break]
After weeks of hard labor and continuous loss, she checked out Magikarp at the Pokemon Center. A new move; Tackle. It did damage. To anyone else, this was pretty sad, but... Tackle did damage! This was a huge change in the way she battled, the way she trained, the way she thought. That, and now that she knew that Magikarp evolved into something, anything... well, Fidel felt like she was at the top of the world.[break][break]
Well, a king on his throne doesn't just sit there, now does he? No, that wasn't it; just because you conquered a nation doesn't mean you stop there. You keep going. Establish your strength! Fidel supposed it was rather vague, what she was feeling, but that was the best way to explain it. She needed to become stronger, more powerful. She couldn't just be content with what she had, not right now![break][break]
And so she entered the foliage, feeling invincible, powerful. She could fight back. And she could get more! More and more and more until she was strong enough, strong enough to truly be a trainer and truly go on her adventure... Now, all she had to do was catch Pokemon. Needed to get stronger...[break][break]
She slammed a Poke Ball into the ground, and Magikarp appeared. She had the power to battle finally. She'd use it. "Magikarp! We're... we're gonna capture Pokemon. And we're gonna get stronger, alright?" The carp flopped an affirmative, and the two tread their way into the tall grass.
the bunnelby hopped around the forest, completely content with itself. it didn't feel good, but it didn't feel bad. relatively normal, y'know? and he liked it that way. life was normal, or at least his was, and every day was a sort of routine. hop around, eat some berries and grass, hop some more, eat some more, hop, sleep, repeat.
best. life. ever.
yawning a little, the bunnelby raised a paw to scratch his ear. and wow, was today nice! it wasn't hot like the rest of the week, but surprisingly pretty cool. maybe it was the breeze from the beach? that was nearby, right? he idly thought of visiting the sea, but nah. that wasn't normal enough for him. plus, who wants all that sand in their fur?
First Pokemon she saw, she'd chuck a Poke Ball at it! That's what trainers did, right? She saw a few trainers catch Pokemon here and there, so she knew the general gist of it. You threw a Poke Ball, and then it'd suck in the Pokemon, and then the Pokemon was yours. The concept was fairly simple, so Fidel thought she had the hang of it by just watching people.[break][break]
...Or, wait, did she have to battle the Pokemon first? She saw people battle the Pokemon before catching it, did that mean something? Perhaps you're supposed to make the other Pokemon faint before catching it, which would... actually make a lot of sense. Fidel scratched her head, lost in thought as to how the capture system worked.[break][break]
Man, if only somebody bothered to teach her! She'd read about it in books, but most of them were pretty fictional, and didn't get into the techno details. Because they're boring. But they're necessary, and she should have realized that they're necessary. Urgh. She rustled her hair, mentally berating herself for not reading enough before becoming a trainer.[break][break]
Her resolve was set. She'd battle her first Pokemon! And then catch it, because that seemed like the right set of things to do. Worse comes to worse, she could get Magikarp to talk to them about joining her, or something. Maybe she'd talk to them herself. She talked to Magikarp lots, and Magikarp seemed to understand her...[break][break]
Since she was lost in her thoughts, she totally missed the Bunnelby passing by.
the nidoran sensed the trainer coming up from a distance, his ears twitching as he hid in the bushes. just when he thought the time was right, he leaped out and onto the girl's patch, baring his rodent-like teeth and pointing his single, poisonous horn at her in aggression.
that's what you get for coming into petalburg woods, see!
he wasn't gonna let her get away with a fight! digging his tiny claws into the ground, the nidoran pulled up some mud from under his paws and huffed out a heavy breath. he was ready for anything!
a wild nidoran has appeared! nidoran is aggressive! what will fidel do?
Though, did she did have to question; when was the right time to toss a Poke Ball? Perhaps, she should make the other Pokemon faint? Or was it when it was close to fainting? Maybe she needed to give any sort of status to the other Pokemon, before doing that. Suddenly, her eye caught something small and purple, and it was a fight.[break][break]
It seemed pretty aggressive, too, so she had no choice. She needed to battle! Right, there was her chance! "Magikarp, there's our first Pokemon! Let's fight!" Magikarp jumped forwards, moving in between the Nidoran and Fidel. For once, both of them would be able to prove themselves on the field of battle. No more running! Fight NOW![break][break]
A raging fire ignites in Fidel's spirit. The prospect of winning was beginning to consume her, and it was written all over her eyes, her smile. It seemed like her bravado was about to burn the forest down. "Tackle! Tackle AGAIN!" She commanded, finally, oh so finally feeling like the trainer she set out to be. For once, being on the other side![break][break]
Magikarp, just as pumped up to finally stop running, stop hiding, hopped off the ground and lunged for the Nidoran, planning to slam into the Pokemon with all it's might. It would do it again, no matter what circumstance, with the same amount of spirit as before.
whoa, could that magikarp tackle?! what?! since when was that a thing?!?! the nidoran was too surprised to dodge the attacks, and took them both in shock. holy arceus... the only reason he started this fight was because he thought he could take that flimsy thing on! now he wasn't so sure....
in a flurry to try and regain the upper hand (that he apparently never had), the nidoran leaped forward and aimed his horn at the flopping fish, striking two quick pecks at it's scaled hide and hoping he made his mark.
nidoran was hit by tackle x2! nidoran used peck x2!
Magikarp took both hits head on. It's used to taking damage; two Pecks from a Nidoran would be tolerable. Fidel knew Magikarp was tough, and Magikarp knew Magikarp was tough, and so the Pecks were tanked quite well. In the meantime, Fidel was already hot on the heels of her next command.[break][break]
"Shake it off, Magikarp! Keep Tackling until you DROP!" Not literally. She wasn't the type of person to force her Pokemon like that... but at the moment, she needed to fight really badly. After so many beatdowns, one HAD to take a chance to redeem themselves, even if it was just one time.[break][break]
Magikarp felt similarly, and acted similarly. With a fierce cry, it flopped into the air and planned to land right on top of the Nidoran in an earthward Tackle. Then, It'd repeat itself. Magikarp tried its hardest to hammer the other Pokemon into the ground with it's entire body.
okay, so he had really underestimated this thing. the magikarp had leaped into the air and tackled him to the ground, but after that, it hit him even harder. already, the nidoran felt like he was unfit to fight? why did he do this?!?! this was gonna end so badly for him.
what could he do? what could he do?! in a panic, the nidoran aimed another peck at the magikarp, and then a prompt poison sting. but, due to him being so flustered, the nidoran's second attack missed entirely. he was so dumb! why did he do this?!?! why, why, why!
nidoran was hit by tackle x2! the second tackle was a critical hit! nidoran used peck! nidoran used poison sting, but he missed!

■ what doesn't kill you makes you stronger
The third Peck was a glancing blow to Magikarp, only managing to scratch it's scales. As it was, the wild Nidoran was in a panic, having been knocked down by Magikarp. Fidel smiled wildly! Yes! Yes! SHE WAS WINNING! This was the result of all her hard work! God, did it feel amazing to finally win something for once! "GO, GO, GO!"[break][break]
Magikarp landed on the ground once more, eying the Nidoran. There was no stopping now, no turning back. The water-type pounced, and pounced again, keeping up the flurry of Tackles on the Nidoran. Meanwhile, Fidel grabbed a Poke Ball and started coming closer to the Nidoran. Once Magikarp delivered the final blow, that was her chance!
he wasn't gonna make it. nope, this was it. he could see it coming, plain as day.
squeezing his eyes shut, the nidoran cried out in pain as the magikarp landed its final blows, knocking the nidoran out until stars fills its eyes and everything went black.
guess that's what he got for being cocky.
nidoran was hit by tackle x2! nidoran fainted! magikarp gained 2 levels! capture? more pokemon?
zdtill on her from her adrenaline high, Fidel took deep breaths in and out as Magikarp made her way back to her. Looking upon her fallen opponent, she tossed a Poke Ball at it, trapping the poison-type inside. then, suddenly, a bubbling emotion came from her heart, and then to her throat. A mad, maniacal laughter echoed throughout the forest, and Fidel roared with laughter for a good moment. She... She WON! SHE WON! GRAHAHAHAHA![break][break]
Meanwhile, Magikarp looked at Fidel, trying to convey a certain emotion. When she finally stopped laughing and looked at her Pokemon, Fidel somehow understood. Magikarp was tired. After that whole thing, she didn't blame it. She returne her Pokemon to it's Poke Ball, and picke up the Poke Ball containing the newly caught Nidoran. She looked around. Magikarp was really burnt out, but she wasn't. As it was, she'd have to get stronger by herself, now.[break][break]
She'd read about something done back in the old days, where people would befriend Pokemon and convince them that it'd be better to come with them, rather than fighting them and forcing a capture. Maybe... she should try that? If she were to get hurt, she could always bring Magikarp out to defend herself. Right! Time to go befriend some Pokemon![break][break]
...Eheh... Eheheh... she finally won something... as she searched for Pokemon, she still kept a somewhat disturbing grin on her face. Seemed like the taste of victory was addictive.
the machop stumbled into the clearing, worried and scared and holding his right arm. he had taken a bad tumble a ways back and got a huge gash in his bicep — his beautiful, big bicep! just his luck – sniff – now everyone was gonna make fun of him! this had better leave a gnarly scar!!
but then he noticed the girl. frozen in terror, tears welt up in his eyes as he looked at her, full of embarrassment. oh no! she was gonna see his bicep! oh no, oh no, oh no! she was gonna make fun of him, wasn't she??
he found his self-esteem breaking, sobbing right there in front of the girl. he was so pathetic!
a wild machop appeared! machop seems upset! what will fidel do?

■ what doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Her catharsis ended when she came face to face with an injured Machop. As it was, it had started bawling in front of her. Fidel's mind immediately went from her power streak to helping out this Pokemon. That gash looked really bad. Maybe she could take it to the Pokemon Center or something... Either way, she approached the Machop tentatively.[break][break]
"Hey, hey. You're really hurt!" She said, coming up to the Machop. "Are you okay? Er, my name's Fidel..." She paused. Did the Machop understand what she was saying? Well, Magikarp understood her just fine, so she could probably assume that Machop would know what she's saying, as well. She blinked and regained focus on the injured Pokemon.[break][break] "Oh, I'm not sure how to treat you. Maybe if I had potions..." She rummaged through her pockets, then mentally froze over when she realized she must have dropped them somewhere. Crap! Plan B, then. "Ah, I ran out. Well, I have this." And so she fished out a Poke Ball.[break][break]
"This'll keep you healthy until I get to a Pokemon Center, where I can heal you up right away. But... it'll mean you're gonna battle under me. I think you're the type of Pokemon to love battling, right?" She smiled at him. "Come with me, I'll get you healthy again, and we'll go on an adventure afterwards! It'll be fun!"
he looked at the girl as she approached, sniffling loudly and looking away, holding his tender bicep in the other direction so maybe she wouldn't see. what a coward! hiding from a little girl! he was a wimp. :'(
the machop sobbed a little more quietly when the girl talked, about to perceive only some of her words. hurt, yes, he was hurt. both physically and emotionally. he sniffed again, missing her name.
he looked back to the girl as she began rummaging through her bags. potions? what were potions? the machop looked between the girl and her bag, still sniffling and probably looking pretty gross at this point, covered in tears and mucus from a runny nose and whatnot. what a loser.
and then she pulled out some ball. it had some weird coloring, and he looked weirdly at the girl as she showed it to him. what kind of sick joke was this?
the girl mentioned helping and healing, so the machop was pretty much all for it. at the mention of battling, his mood made a complete 180 — so much so that he grinned and raised his arms in fist pumps. "MACH– OOOOOPPPPPOPOP!"
he began to bawl again, holding his sore arm tight to his body. he was so stupid! why would he do that?!?! crying profusely now, he nodded at the girl and accepted to pokeball. anything to keep him from making himself look like even more of an idiot.
machop is interested in help! machop accepts the pokeball! will fidel still capture this helpless pokemon?

The Machop seemed happy. Yeah, that was good! She took that as an affirmative for her deal; she was right in guessing the Pokemon really liked to fight. It just seemed like a fighting type of Pokemon. But then his arm acted up again, and he was bawling again.[break][break]
"Oh! Geez, uh, I'll get you healed up right away, then." With that, Fidel tapped the Poke Ball to the wild Machop, and it entered the Poke Ball. Hopefully, this worked... She never really thought that somebody could catch a Pokemon using only words, but apparently, it was the case! Fidel was fairly happy. Learned something new every day. Though, once she was done with her catching, she'd have to visit a Pokemon Center once more.
