It should have been a strange and difficult thing to leave home, leave the only people you have ever known for nineteen years and travel somewhere foreign with nothing guiding you except a highly volatile, half-sadistic ghost as a companion. But the strange thing was, it wasn't. At least not to Elle. Leaving her parents behind, leaving behind all sense of comfort and security both emotionally and financially felt as easy as changing clothes or cutting her hair.
The thought of that made Elea touch her hair, as if for a minute verifying its existence. Maybe parting with her parents was easier than parting with her hair, after all. her fingers laced around the cascading brown strands, wrapped into a different reality for a bit as she zoned out. Finally her shuppet broguth her back to her senses by bopping her nose. Elle blinked and then laughed at her companion, who gestures with her whole body as though the world was a hoola-hoop. The gesture was made to make Elle look around, which she did, immediately noticing a man sitting lonely on a park bench.
She gave a little surprised 'o' shaped mouth, but then quickly jogged over to where he was, her light cotton dress swaying with each step. She found herself bending her body over so her hair was falling off her shoulders and her eyes were staring right into his with a eerie kind of curiosity. Her shuppet had the same face, staring at him from an angle from the top of her head.
"Whatcha up to?" she asked, face as bright as morning.
music pounds from his headphones, but min jae doesn't even seem to notice. he sits idly by himself, content to watch the scenery from the bench he rests on. his eyes bore holes into everything he stares at, but he doesn't utter a single word. there's a look of wonder on his face, at least. everything kind of amazes him.
he decides that littleroot is a nice place to start from - min jae snaps pictures of the buildings on his phone to send to his parents. they'll be calling him by evening to check on how he's doing, too concerned to leave him to fend for himself even though he's in the same region as he is. parents, smothering as ever.
vacantly, min jae doesn't even notice elea approaching him, much less making a face until his gaze shifts and he's positively scared out of his wits. he opens his mouth in what appears to be a shout, but no sound comes. min jae's just staring at ther, shell shocked and confused and unable to speak.
he barely catches her words. nothing, he signs, just enjoying the scenery. it doesn't even cross his mind that "normal" people won't understand a word of what he's saying.
Elea Laceheart confused child forgets no one uses sign language

She watches as his face lights up in realization- of all the times she's met people (she could probably count them on her fingers if she tried), the part where they realized she was talking to them was probably the funniest. She reared back, only half aware of the fact that she was intruding on his personal space, finding herself in a fit of giggles. Her hands reached up to her face, partially blocking the sight of her pearly white teeth and she laughed at the stranger's expense.
But then she stops, unable to realize what he's doing. He looks like he's drawing things in the air. On a normal day it would be something she found amusing, but right now it was amazing. She had no idea what he was doing, but he was doing it anyway- it just went to show how little she knew about everything in general. She was back to staring into his face yet again, her brilliant brown irises poking there way into his as she stared at his hand motions.
"What are you doing?" she asked, unable to comprehend what was going on, or if this was supposed to mean something. Was it a kind of symbol? She had no idea. The shuppet on his head began poking at her, trying to tell her that it was a form of sign language, no doubt. But despite the years they had been together, Elle seldom listened to her companion when her curiosity was this high. She didn't listen to anyone at all.
So the shuppet was left to sigh exasperatedly, and continue staring at the stranger, interested now that she knew he was mute. People with disabilities fascinated her, because they seemed closer to the dead, in a strange way.
Elle continued her rude, unabashed staring, waiting for an answer before daring to back away and give him some space as if her staying away would cause him to disappear.
min jae looks absolutely silly, making hand motions in the air that only he understands. she's laughing, or so his eyes tell him from the way she's covering her mouth and her entire body is shaking. in a good way, he hopes, unless she's laughing at him - then that'd be upsetting, but it's not something he can exactly voice out.
sign language, he motions, before it finally dawns upon him. right. the effect is almost instant. embarrassment causes a rosy blush to flood his cheeks. he can feel his cheeks heating up from how silly he must have looked, like he's putting up some sort of mime show for people to laugh and jeer at. min jae fumbles a little before he reaches for a pokeball.
nodding, he lets the pokemon out. the creature inside is small, and standing on the bench, he studies elea and looks back at min jae. 'what have you gotten yourself into this time?' the ralts retorts. min jae isn't signing any more, instead, maintaining eye contact with the ralts. his eyes only leave the ralts for a moment, glancing up at the girl.
"she doesn't understand me. help, please, youngsoo?" min jae pleads with puppy eyes that youngsoo can't say no to, and the ralts grudgingly does so. he folds his arms and concentrates his energy towards the girl.
'sorry. he doesn't speak. i hope you'll pardon this intrusion,' the ralts speaks, out of standard operating procedure. being a service pokemon means that he has to watch his place, and to always be responsible for everything min jae does. he's watching min jae signing carefully as he does a translation. 'he says "just enjoying the scenery".' min jae gestures towards elea, shyly bobbing his head towards her. 'and yourself?'

When she asks him what he is doing, much to her delight and wonderment, he continued drawing things in the air. It's absolutely interesting, and she watches it with the meticulous gaze of a scientist watching a test run on a latest experiment. Her eyes shift from finger to finger, watching them move delicately in practiced waves. Before she knows it, she's copying him, having nothing better to do thanks to the silence between the two.
When she copies him, he starts turning bright red, and Elea is not sure if it's her fault or not. She's starting to get a little frustrated at the silence, and it shows when she gives him a little stare. "Did I do something?" she asks, not sure if she's supposed to be expecting more gestures or not. Her hands are frozen in place, performing the last sign required to form the words 'sign language' (or at least, how she saw them, they could have meant anything and she wouldn't have known better.
A pokeball causes a ralts to come out, and Elea reacts immediately, picking the pokemon up and holding him to the sky like the lion king. "Oh my gosh, this is cute, can I hold him? Her? Er...hold, I want to take a photograph, please~" Elle quickly puts the Ralts down, and beings rnasacking her bag (the little jumble of money and random things she decided to carry, mostly), looking for her phone.
The shuppet danced off her head and flopped onto the bench, looking at the Ralts curiously, and putting on a malicious smile which Elea did not notice.
She was stopped in her tracks, glaringly pink smartphone in her hands as she looked up at the stranger, a shocked expression on her face. "He can't speak?" she said, now talking to the Ralts as though the pokemon was far more important than the trainer. "Wow, that's horrible." She looks mellow for a whooping total of five seconds before giving the ralts an incredulous look.
"Enjoying the scenery?" she asked, blanking out for a bit. "Ah, well. Right." Some people did do that, she supposed. "I'm just about to start a journey! And him? He has a pokemon right, so he must a be a trainer. Ah, are you a trainer?"
he's not sure when it clicks in his head that she doesn't understand - probably when she starts mimicking him. how did he let himself forget? caught between confusion and an eagerness to get his point across, there's a lot of fumbling on his end. her actions aren't particularly correct but at least he's not motioning in the air anymore, especially since it's a futile attempt to get her to understand.
youngsoo is confused - mostly irritated. he scowls a little at how quick elle is to lift him, and isn't exactly at a size where he can fight back. he, min jae corrects, although youngsoo takes it upon himself to address her question. 'i am very much male, thank you very much.' he knows how his species is known for their effeminate qualities, not to mention one very feminine evolution. he doesn't think too much of it. male, female, it doesn't matter to this service pokemon. he doesn't say no to a picture. there's a small smile on min jae's face, happy to see elea taking a liking to youngsoo. he's a bit of a grumpy ralts, but people seem to like him a fair bit.
the ralts casts the shuppet a wary look, a little perturbed by that grin on its face. min jae opens his mouth, as though trying to say something, but refrains. he can't summon the willpower to do it. talking is way too daunting, especially talking to a stranger. he shuts his mouth and shakes his head. the blonde continues to watch her lips while he makes more hand gestures.
'he says "it's okay",' youngsoo translates. min jae searches through his things again for his trainer id and points to it, a little proud of it. "PYO MIN JAE" in all caps is written under the name. he's waited so long to get hold of one of these, to have his name proudly embellished on one of these cards to prove his worth as a trainer. 'i'm just his service pokemon, though.' not that he couldn't battle... but he usually preferred not to.

Elle laughs- she's had that kind of reaction before, although admittedly not from many pokemon. It's something else, seeing a pokemon who is able to speak. "No problem," she responds, giving the Ralts a teasing smile. It was usually what she said to humans, and it would probably work on pokemon too- Elle did not see them as much different.
The shuppet enjoyed the wary look on the ralts' face- fear was good, it was a very, very good emotion. He took a step towards the ralts, floating menacingly--- before being promptly interrupted as Elle sat down on the bench, promptly taking up the space between the two pokemon. She hand her phone facing them, the selfie feature active. She took a picture of her with the ralts, and obviously tried to have the stranger in the shot, too. Why not, after all?
She then sat up straight that the sound of new information. "Service pokemon? What a boring life for a poor ralts..." She squinted at the trainer card and smiled. "Good to meet you, too. I'm Elea. Call me Elle, though. Full names are weird." She twirled her hair and stood up, reaching her hand down so that the shuppet could climb on her again. The ghost type did so, but not without a parting tongue stuck out at the Ralts.
"So? Aren't you a trainer? What're you doing sitting here and enjoying the scenery for?"
she laughs again, and min jae decides that it's a good look on her. all cheery and laughing in a voice he can't hear. min jae likes to think it adds a bit of mystery to it all, for him to keep wondering what she sounds like. there's this dreamy look on his face as he watches her, mesmerized with the way her lips move as he sees the words dancing from them. a boy can dream, after all.
she settles between the two pokemon, and min jae twist his body to try and accommodate. he keeps his attention fixated on her, not wanting to miss a word. even with his headphones on, he's not having any difficult 'hearing' her. youngsoo, on the other hand, looks a little indignant at her accusation that his life is boring. 'i'll have you know that it's a job of responsibility,' his words cut through the minds he's broadcasting to. min jae reaches a hand out to calm his ralts.
"i think you do a good job," min jae comments telepathically to his pokemon, who only looks huffy. he signs more. sorry... youngsoo takes his job seriously. the ralts, seeing this, snips a little. 'damn right, i take my job seriously,' he translates, arms folded. it's not easy, and min jae can be frustrating to deal with.
it's a nice name. he tries to compliment the pretty girl, but it seems like youngsoo has other ideas. 'he prefers to call you elea, though,' the ralts snaps, obviously going out of his way to be a bit of a brat about things. min jae hears him loud and clear in his head, and waves his hands frantically. no, no! elle is okay. e-l-l-e, right? his hands are spasming with how fast he has to sign to try and get his point across. youngsoo looks smug. 'elle doesn't even sound like elea,' he pretends to translate. min jae is red in the face, looking ready to clobber youngsoo for this.

Elle has never been met with much rudeness before, and despite her short few encounters with people, she does believe in the good in everyone she sees. Although she's been met with guarded, serious folk before, she usually just skipped over them. Kindness spread, after all. So while she's standing up, looking at the photograph and absently marvelling at the great quality of it, the sudden telephatic noise makes her look up, a little shocked
"Eh, but you shouldn't take things too seriously, you know?" She tries to reason, reaching out to pet the Ralts to calm him down. She retreats when she sees that the boy is already doing so, but the Ralts doesn't seem clamer in the least, continuing with a blarge of mean words. Elle frowns, kind of annoyed at the way he's being so serious and grumpy. "Too much work and not enough fun makes people boring," she says, attempting to quote something but then giving up and making it her own mid way. The ralts doesn't seem to care, though, and Elea thinks for a minute the pokemon looks positively cruel.
"Huh?" she blurts, not really sure how to react. The shuppet on her head stirs quietly, moving to be seen from behind the little lei of flowers. It senses the slight annoyance from Elle and is glad to see it is directed at the blonde boy- the shuppet wasn't too fond a humans aside from the brunette.
"Elea is so dull though, it sounds too formal, don't you think?" she tries to add, looking at how the boy is getting red and staring at his pokemon in disbelief. She vaguely sees him make two 'l' signs in the air, but she doesn't know what to make of them.
"Wow, that's...rude." Elle says, her previous joy a little disappeared now, the bright gleam in her eyes faded to be replaced with a small squint in the direction of the blonde boy. But then she tries to lighten the air again, not liking the suffocating feeling of dislike. It's better to be happy- life's too short to be angry and grumpy, whatever the Ralts may say.
"But uh, call me whatever you like, I guess." Her words a little strained though. "What, hmm, music are you listening to?" she asks, immediately finding a way to turn the conversation away from her name so she won't be offended too much, though the damage has already been dealt.
min jae tries so hard to appeal to some sort of reason, hoping, just hoping that elle will understand. he doesn't want to give her the wrong impression, but it seems that youngsoo's words have already made a lasting impact on her. he's waving his hands desperately, hoping to get her to listen. in his flustered state, he keeps using abstract hand symbols that mean nothing to someone who doesn't understand sign language. youngsoo does not mean it. i'm sorry. he looks distressed beyond belief, trying to get both parties to calm down.
youngsoo, on the other hand, looks proud of what chaos he's caused. he nods in response to her question, trying to pacify her. too formal, yes! he's almost frantic. he cheeks are burning and he's so embarrassed by his pokemon's disobedience. "what are you doing?!"he's screaming internally, and youngsoo just looks bemused. 'talking, what else?'
"don't change my words! i can hear you just fine, by the way!" even his internal voice is small and uncertain, lacking conviction. youngsoo chuckles. "stop saying mean things to her... please?"
again with the puppy eyes. min jae's lucky his ralts likes him. the ralts clears his throat. "it appears my trainer has a change of mind. he thinks elle is cute, like you," he addresses the both of them this time. min jae is livid. the blush on his face intensifies, at loss for what to say.
he tries to follow her lead into a change of topic. nodding, min jae holds out his headphones, still blushing, as he offers it to her for a listen. it's a little loud, however, but he doesn't notice. why would he?

She really has no idea what to think-on one hand the ralts is speaking in a sort of blunt and direct manner and makes her feel seriously pissed off, and on the other, his owner is flailing about worse than a magikarp, turning red and then white and back again, like some kind of ambulance signal. He's gesturing so fast it looks like he's trying to rap, and Elle puts her hands up to hide a giggle which escapes her lips, not knowing that he can't hear her.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry," she mumbles, wheezing. "You're really too funny when you blush like that!" she throws her arms around in a girlish expression of just how comical the scene looks to her, and then she looks at the Ralts disbelievingly.
"Wha--" she blushes a little now, being her turn to feel awkward. But it's not as deep as Pyo's blush, and it only lasts for a little bit. She's used to being complimented like that, but it does give her a fluttery feeling a little bit. "Thank you, I guess?" she says, not sure what to think of by the sudden 'change of mind,' but happy none the less.
She took the earphones, feeling them vibrate against the tips of her fingers as she plugged them in, quickly regretting it as the sound blasted through her eardrums.
"Ahhaha!" she pulled away. "This is crazy loud. Keep listening to this and you'll become deaf!"she she said, still trying to get the headphones the right distance to listen to it without complaint. When she did, she realized that she knew the song, and her face lit up.
"Oh hey, I know this..." she paused a bit, waiting for it to get to the part she knew the best, and then when she opened her mouth she was signing. Such a shame that MJ couldn't hear her voice.
he can't hear her laughter, only sees her flailing her hands about. it's oddly enough for min jae, oddly okay for him even though her laughter is at his expense. she does look very happy, and it makes his heart flutter a little as well.
youngsoo thinks the whole scene is hilarious. min jae is blushing, and elea is blushing and they both look silly as hell, although min jae's face is a brighter beetroot and he can't stop blushing out of embarrassment. if only his ralts was the mute one instead of him! he seethes a little at youngsoo's trickery, to which the ralts only flashes him a coy grin. throwing curveballs at min jae keeps him sharp. it also helps to keep unwanted girls away from him. the best protection was distance, after all.
she doesn't stop laughing, and min jae finds it enchanting. he doesn't understand the concept of "too loud", of course. if anything, the louder, the more he can sense the vibrations of the pounding bass and pretend that he knows what the song remotely sounds like. he flicks his wrist with his palm wide open near his ear, wondering if she'll understand. i am already deaf, though.
then she's singing. min jae just watches the way her lips move and tries to imagine it in some sort of tune. the beats he knows don't sync up to her words, so he simply allows himself to be content with watching the way she sings. he doesn't close his eyes, doesn't blink, afraid to miss a word or a moment. there's a small smile on his face as he flashes her a thumbs up. you sing very well.
Elea Laceheart words in italics are telepathic conversations between mj and ys. words in green are telepathic words broadcast to other parties.
He gestures at his ears, and this time she tries to understand. His ears? There's something wrong with his ears? Yet again, the shuppet, Bloody Mary, is forced to shake her head in annoyance at her owner's inability to think a little bit.
Until it finally hit her, and she looked shell shocked for a minute. "You mean you can't hear, either?" she asked, a little stupidly, looking at Pyo Min Jae like he came from a different world. She immediately took her phone out a snapped a picture of him, as if quick to preserved to moment of him holding his thumbs up to her.
Elea then let out the confused stare she had been holding back, suddenly suspicious of this strange specimen who couldn't hear or speak- the two things that, if she had been deprived of for even a single day, she could have undoubtedly gone insane and hung herself straight away. She was now looking at MJ with a new found respect.
"How can you say I sing well if you haven't even heard me?" she asked, giving him a strange look. "Have you heard anything?" she was up in his face again, examining him like a specimen in a museum, with all the fascination of a child staring at the sky.
min jae's a little sheepish to admit it, pinking slightly while he shakes his head. no. it feels like people give him a different look once he tells them of his disabilities. for someone who's never had it, he doesn't know what he's missing out on. it's nicer when people don't know; they don't carry this look of pity on their faces like he's something that needs their pity. life has gone on, although min jae will admit that it's not exactly the most normal of lives that he leads.
he wonders what she's doing with her phone, but doesn't ask - can't, anyway. he figures it'd be rude or nosy for him to pry into her personal affairs.
i've never heard anything bad, so it has to be good, right? the logic to him is simple, but youngsoo rolls his eyes and stifles laughter. 'everything sounds like whitney houston to him. take it as a compliment,' the ralts translates rather loosely.
"that's not what i said, though..." min jae protests against the ralts, but youngsoo isn't listening to any of it. 'he's lip reading. probably why he's been staring at your lips like he wants to kiss them.'
the blush is back, and min jae looks like he's going to burn up right there and then. youngsoo is having a field trip with messing with his trainer. oh, he'll pay for it later, but he knows the boy can't hold a grudge. too sweet and innocent, perfect to mess around with.
Elea Laceheart words in italics are telepathic conversations between mj and ys. words in green are telepathic words broadcast to other parties.
Well, yes indeed she gave him a whole different look when he stated (or rather, implied) his own deafness through gestures. It seemed to make a lot of sense now, and although the gears of her mind were still turning around, trying to comprehend the inability to hear or speak of a human much like herself, she more or less understood the situation. She's still inches away from his face and staring daggers into his eyes, but what the ralts says makes her blink and pull back.
"Whitney Houston?" she asked, a bit numbly, like she's not sure what to make of it. And then she kind of gets the joke, and laughs a little, amused by the tendencies of the Ralts. The shuppet hovering on her head gives a sudden, malicious-sounding hoot of laughter, and Elle looks up, unable to catch sight of the ghost without moving her head. So instead, she sighs and tries to focus more on the conversation that's taking place in her mind. The shuppet makes her way down Elle's head to her shoulders, peering at the Ralts with an approving sort of curiosity.
Elle laughs again at Youngsoo's translation, puckering her lips teasingly, slightly misunderstanding the words in the process. "Eh, really? Well you could have just asked." Her grin is devilish- she's never kissed a boy before. But from the rumors regarding the definitions of cute, Min Jae definitely matched up. And honestly- why not? If he was cool with it, so was she. Everything was meant to be lived, after all.
Bloody Mary is now floating beside her, and Elle makes a childish pout. "Like this, right?" She reaches out to kiss the shuppet, in the way a young boy kisses his first ever Pikachu. The shuppet lets out a hiss at being shown affection, and vanishes into a wisp of purple and black mist, only to reappear on Elle's head, where the trainer conveniently could not see her.
Elle didn't seem to mind, though, and looked and Min Jae instead, waiting for what he would say. Or rather, what the Ralts would say.
Hey, wait..what if they psychic type wasn't correctly translating anything Min Jae said?
