And the next round begun- Julius checked his watch idly, wondering if it was time yet. If it was time to blow this place into chaos, to show people just what magma was like. But no. It wasn't, there was still time to attempt to relax and think about other things.
Zwei was already tired- the pokemon did not seem to be reacting well to the atmosphere, which was strange since Julius was expecting the pikachu to be all over all of the guests. Instead, it appeared as though the Piakchu simply wanted to sleep, and so Julius let him sleep, inside the cozy onfines of his top hat. It was a hard thing to balance on his head, especially with Zwei inside it, and Julius did feel like his neck wuld snap at times, but there was a universal law against waking a sleeping pokemon as cute as a pikachu. So he refrained.
Instead he double checked his tie and his vest, and tried to ignore the little calls of give me a cigarette that his mouth was asking for, occupying it with some wine instead.
And then he waited for the tables to change, hoping he wouldn't meet two twelve year olds in one night.
[attr="class","bt4"]the night had left her in a dizzy euphoria. sebastian and cedric had both been wonderful company, they put every other man out there to shame. in all honesty, nat would have wished that she met a nice girl who was interested as well, just for the chance to see pretty dresses and the like. champagne flute in hand, nat wandered through the crowd with her tyrunt at her heels. he was being very behaved today. no funny business with ankle snapping or the like. appreciatively, she petted him on the head and continued to feed him little tidbits she picked up at the dinner tables. food seemed to keep him under control well enough.
she bade cedric farewell with a polite bow and thank you and kiss on the cheek, not thinking too much of it. she definitely wasn't used to all this socialising. having to look pretty and drink and talk to people at the same time was awfully exhausting. it felt weird, having her hair in a bun, walking around in a dress and heels... it was so unlike her. she danced her way around the crowd and settled at a new table, smiling at the stranger from behind her mask. "hey," she greeted, "how's your night going?"

The pretty blonde that walked over to him, on the other hand, was definitely not what he was expecting. With his luck he would have expected an eighty year old after the twelve year old, but instead he was greeted with someone who seemed just his age, and who had a beautiful body to boot.
He smiled gently as she sat down, hoping to have a good time for the last bits of tonight. She seemed happy in her ignorance of what was going to go down, and he decided that he should be happy for her as well. He nodded at her greeting. "Hey right back at you," he responded, giving her a well meaning wink; he could only hope she didn't take it too seriously.
Something about her voice seem familiar but Julius didn't recognize it for now. "Pretty crazy, actually. Met a lot of new people. But always good to see another pretty lady such as yourself. What might your name be?" he asked, elbows on the table as he leaned forward, looking up at her through the hipsteresque dark brown of his mask.
[attr="class","bt4"]tonight had given her amazing luck, blessing her with polite and nice people. even if they threw something suggestive her way, natalie had learnt to shrug it off and go along with it, trying not to think too much about any underlying meaning. she fiddled with the elastic of her mask while she humoured the man in the vest. compared to others in suits, he looked a little dressed down. nothing wrong with a bit of individuality, she supposed.
mike sniffed the air, having caught onto some sort of scent. the smells of perfumes and cologne in the air had done well to mask any scents that he did recognise. even natalie, with her own perfumes and hand cream, smelled a lot more different than usual. it was a bit of a sensory overload for the recently revived fossil, not having known any of these things prior to his revival. he snuck himself under the table, finding the lights too bright for his tastes.
natalie propped her hand on the table to rest her head, flashing a sweet smile. "natalie," she introduced herself, forgoing "nat" for once. it made her feel feminine and it was her own name, good heavens; she should be allowed to feel comfortable with her own name. dressed the way she was, she couldn't help to feel like it suited her for once. "oh, my pokemon... hmm, where is he?" she looked about, concerned for the fossil pokemon.

The girl did the same thing she did, and soon they were both resting their hands on their palms, their arms on the table. Her smile looked pretty on her face, although the masks still made the event a little uncomfortable. Ah well, it didn't really matter. Julius took in the details easily- the pretty bun she had on, and how he was certain he had seen something similar to this girl somewhere before, but he wasn't sure when.
And then she said her name, and it all seemed to click. Julius gave a look of surprise, his mouth dangling in a little o for a bit before it burst into a triumphant smirk.
"So it was Natalie," was all he said, his voice lower than before, and the telltale grin showing just exactly who he was. If that wasn't enough, Zwei seemed to have smelled a familiar scent in the air, and awoke from his nap, cause Julius's hat to tilt a bit. The yellow-fur was soon seen beneath the brim of his hat, and Zwei casually tumbled off the trainer's head, landing on his shoulder.
It began crawling further down, until at last the pokemon was underneath the table from where the strange yet familiar smell seemed to be coming from.
"Pika?" asked the pikachu, looking at the Tyrunt in wonder.
Meanwhile, above the table, Julius looked at Nat. "Oh, don't tell me you brough the Tyrunt here," he said, shaking his head lightly, smile still on his face.
"Anyway, pleasure to meet you, Natalie. I'm Julius." He lifted the hat and gave the blonde a mock bow, quite happy with the turn of events.
[attr="class","bt4"]it didn't even occur to her what she had said. she gave him a quizzical stare, wondering what on earth the stranger was talking about when it hit her. the expression on her face contorted into a look of absolute horror. would she ever go a day without embarrassing herself in front of him? natalie didn't know, and quite honestly, didn't want to think about it. she was kind of furious at how he'd known it was her, yet played her like some sort of fool.
natalie felt a little defeated. looking deflated, the woman teased locks of hair out of her face as she folded her arms, watching his pikachu give away julius' identity almost instantly. her eyes followed the pikachu, clearly not keen on making eye contact with julius. she was plenty embarrassed. nat was almost glad that her mask was there - if julius saw her blushing, she'd have run out of the place by now.
mike smelled something familiar in the air and perked up, glancing towards zwei's direction. he peered out from under the table, spying the familiar face, but more importantly, the familiar ankle. no amount of cologne could mask the scent of the skin he had ripped. the tyrunt's eyes wandered upwards until he noticed the human's face. a low growl rumbled from the back of his throat.
natalie heard it - she blinked, before looking a little smug herself. "he's been very well behaved for the whole night. i can't say the same for you..." she tried to ignore how smug julius was being himself. "if he attacks you, then the issue lies within you, not him."

It was kind of...amusing to see her acting so poutish, except the fun thing was that she laced it carefully, discreetly behind a highly composed, sophisticated look.Even now, she pulled her hair back, folded her arms and averted her gaze. He wanted to laugh, but that level and cruelness had no yet been reached.
He then heard a low growl, and it was his turn to be a little thankful for the mask- if Natalie had seem him grow pale at the thought of her Tyrunt, he'd have regretting not laughing at her while he had the chance. He looked at the table cautiously, only his emerald eyes moving so as not to break his smug look. Then he looked back- they both were practically mirrors or the other, looking at eachother like two preening peacocks.
But what she said made him shake his head with an exasperated smile. "What kind of faulty logic is that..." He was quick to criticize, but he looked back up at her, smile proving that he was over the incident. Sort of. Zwei had the Tyrunt in check, anyway. Hopefully.
Meanwhile, the Pikachu had become curious as to why the Tyrunt was growling. It waddled over to his friend (sure, they had fought, but hey, friends that didn't fight were simply not friends) and poked the Tyrunt's nose, a little boop more than anything. It then let out an amused pika and smiled happily.
"Well, sorry for being so charming," he retorted, making sure the 'sorry' was as sarcastic as possible, and he added a big enough smirk at the end of the sentence. He then reclined from his position, elbows going off the table and hands straightening out his attire. He reached out for his glass and took a very small sip, not wanting to get too drunk tonight. "Well? We've got five minutes. How goes the volcanic research?" he asked idly, looking at her because he didn't have much else to do, and she was pretty, after all.
[attr="class","bt4"]things seemed a lot less interesting now that she was fully aware it was julius she was talking to, as in julius, annoying guy who kept calling her nathan and was always catching her when she was at her most embarrassing. she couldn't say she hated the guy - hate was a very strong word - but if anything, it came pretty close to "hate", if nat had to quantify it objectively.
the only thing that seemed to put a smile - albeit a smug grin - on the dampened expression on her face was probably how mike looked at julius like he knew it was playtime. he had earned himself an affectionate nickname of "mike's chewtoy". more specifically, his ankle, but she didn't delve into the details. the tyrunt opened his mouth slightly and gave a toothy grin to the dark haired man, as though thoroughly enjoying the game.
zwei's sudden nose tap surprised the tyrunt. he looked disoriented for a moment, looking at the pikachu with confusion as he tried to snap at its ears. "mike," nat called, and the tyrunt immediately knocked it off, trotting back over to her side. she dropped him another bite and petted him sweetly. "all trained. i'd still watch out, in any case," she joked, slipping her arms tightly in front of her chest and feeling content with how far mike's training had been coming along.
she scoffed at his sarcasm. she wasn't keen on entertaining him, even if only for five minutes. that was five minutes of her time she wasn't getting back. but there was nothing to pull her away from the conversation and she didn't want to come off as the rude asshole. "it's fine. i haven't really travelled up towards mount chimney. i'm thinking of seeing if the oceanic museum here has anything about underwater volcanoes."

On the other hand, Julius was unsure of what he thought of Nat. After what had gone down in the hospital, he might have liked never meeting her again. But that was silly- he was being silly. He couldn't keep pretending like he didn't have a dead sister when talking to people, and he wasn't going to get lucky like with Cassandra and just manage to agree not to talk about the past. People would know. And even if he didn't like Nat knowing, he couldn't much help it.
Besides the fact that her Tyrunt had had a bite at his ankle, he didn't really hate Nat for any specific reason. Sure she was too kind, and pushed things on others a bit, but as long as he could tease at her, he was okay with it the way it was. A surface relationship- words and smirks and blushes and nothing more. It was good.
Zwei gave a jump back when the pokemon tried to nip at his ears, quickly buzzing lightly with electricity and a smile coming to his face. "Zwei, no..." Julius mumbled, and the Pikachu frowned, but trotted back to Julius's side, giving Mike a taunting tongue stuck out, like Julis would protect him from future nibbles.
"Well behaved, huh?" Julius said, rolling his eyes. "Mt Chimney, hm." He said, a thoughtful look crossing his features. Possibly for an entirely different reason, but the mountain had his interest as well. The magma base had to be somewhere there. "Right," he said, nodding easily. "Last I visited it definitely did. But then again, I didn't pay much attention, so I guess I can't help," he offered genuinely, shrugging with a casual air.
The next question, though, caught him off guard. His eyes went a little wide, but he calmed himself down. He'd expected that, right? Yeah of course. The second he found out that Nat knew about Cassie, he was making little imaginary conversation in case anyone confronted him with it. Like Nat, or Andrea, or anyone.
But saying what he wanted to say became difficult, and his new, fast paced breathing didn't help. "Cassie..." God, the name. Saying it aloud was definitely easier when he was half unconscious.
"Cassie's dead," he blurted, and then he suddenly decided that he did after all need the rest of that drink, and took the glass to his mouth, finishing the rest of it after sloshing the liquid from one side of his mouth to the other for a bit. He got a little shaky after that. "Y-yeah.." He definitely couldn't look anywhere but his semi empty glass anymore, and ended up twirling it around.
[attr="class","bt4"]she could hear the disbelief in his words when he spoke. it wasn't like she expected much of proper response from him. with her tyrunt at her heel, she was able to keep an eye on him. she had been half bluffing when she said he was all trained. he had been doing well until now. maybe he just had a morbid fascination with julius' ankles. natalie thought that was pretty funny, in any case.
she had asked her question out of genuine curiosity. he had been awfully vague about it back at the hospital, but she figured that cassie was like, some sort of girlfriend or something. even if he had totally been flirting with her - had he been seeing cassie at that time? if that was the case, julius was starting to sound like a deplorable man. kind of like a certain blonde she had come to know and dislike, but whatever. the resemblance was uncanny - too uncanny.
but then his answer hit her like a brick. it felt like a cruel slap to the face. natalie found words stuck in her throat as she tried to conjure an answer. "uh." she regretted her question almost immediately. nervously, she took to taking her drink in larger gulps, too uneasy to respond. "...i'm sorry, i shouldn't have asked."
she let silence fall upon them. natalie was still staring at her drink. her eyes occasionally flicked towards mike, who looked back with a tilted head. "or... do you want to talk about it?" talking always helped, at least, in her case. it had always been the same person, the only person she felt comfortable to share everything with.

Julius was most certainly a deplorable man, and he wouldn't have been too hesitant on flirting with Nat one way or the other. But then again he hadn't ever called any relationship official, so what he was exactly was in the hands of someone else to be judged. But he was a little hurt on the inside, and some of it showed.
If Nat regretted asking the question, Julius definitely regretted answering it. He should've found something else to say, some lie or the other. But he probably wanted to say the truth, and it came out. It didn't feel any better, not really. He was stupid for thinking it would.
Zwei sensed this unease from his trainer, and took to crawling on his shoulder, which had slumped considerably. The pikachu bopped his ear, to which Julius gave a tired smile and petted the creature behind the ears.
"It's okay," he told Natalie, not looking at her, however. "Don't pity me, by the way," he said, turning to her with a smaller smile. "I'm still a jackass." He winked after that, but found that the play was dry and dead. Her next words slackened his jaw a bit, and a little anger came to him, urged on by the drink tossing and turning inside of him.
"Talking," His mood had turned sour, and he wasn't doing much to hide it. "Think that's gonna help?" he asked. "Didn't help nine years ago, won't help now." He put the drink down, glass hitting the table and causing what remained of reddish liquid to hit against the clear surface.
He swallowed with some difficulty, and shook his head. "Sorry, I think I drank too much..."
Behind him, the few minutes they had left ticked away, and Julius did not know what to do. He didn't want to talk about something he cared for so much only to have Nat give him a vacant gaze and say something she didn't feel. But leaving the open wound open felt wrong, too. And now the conversation would always end awkwardly, he knew from experience.
[attr="class","bt4"]nat felt horrible for dredging up past. in her defense, she hadn't known, but at the end of the day, it was her fault again. julius was just there, asking not to be pitied, but it was hard to do so. every part of him looked pitiful now. unlocking a tragic backstory always did that to a person. but if it was pity he didn't want, then nat wouldn't give it. she knew all too well what that felt like. she knew better than to weep for the man. if he didn't want it, she wouldn't give him the time of day.
"alright," she murmured, looking down at her own feet. she could hear his voice and sense his mood souring. there was no point in her to stick around for that, either. after that depressing show, she wasn't entirely in the mood to bicker with him anymore. it might have had to do with the pitying, but nat wouldn't admit it to him. it'd probably just make him angrier. it was clear that nothing she said would make things better for them.
she beckoned for mike and rose. "i think i'll take my leave then," she spoke curtly. she cast a long, lingering gaze at julius before she turned away and started to walk away. if she couldn't help him, she didn't want to push it. nat was used to being stubborn, but she wasn't dumb.

Julius didn't want to blame Nat- he'd never do so verbally, but he dreaded acting like it was her fault. He was the one with the wound that kept being poked at, and he didn't want to dislike Nat for that. But he kind of did-- unknowingly she managed to ruin what could have been one hilarious meeting after the other. Granted, Nat probably didn't like him, but that didn't mean that he himself couldn't secretly enjoy catching the blonde off guard and poking fun at her. Now, that had been irreversibly stained, and Julius felt himself dreading it.
Nat accepted it easily; something anyone would have done. Julius nodded mutely at her and managed another awkward smile. She let him with space by not asking, but also left him feeling a little empty, he couldn't deny. What kind of guy didn't want a pretty looking girl asking him about all his troubles? He snorted internally at his own thoughts, and tried not to wish away the circumstances.
But then she said he was leaving and he opened his eyes- staring at her for a moment, catching the lingering gaze as soft disappointment welled its way into his eyes. But eventually the gaze broke, and Julius struggled for something to say- whatever had gone on between them was at its awkward end, and when he opened his mouth a word tumbled out. "Thanks," he said, wondering what it was for. Maybe it was for earlier, when she had admitted him to the pokecenter after dragged him all the way there.
