After a night sharing a room with the little heiress a day on the beach was just what Gwen needed. She'd put on a pair of swimming shorts, a breathable top, and grabbed a towel before making a b-line for the sandy seaside. Though she didn't do it to enjoy the waves or catch some sun. No she had bigger interests. Magikarp. It was no secret that the water type could live in any kind of water, but what if it was born in one kind and migrated to another?
"If those already accustomed to salt water can be moved to freshwater sources. . ." she mumbled to herself as she walked onto the beach, toting a bag full of Fresh Waters and a couple lemonades. She'd already figured out how she wanted to conduct this experiment. She'd borrowed a shovel from the pokemart and found an unoccupied piece of beach to use. She'd dig a hole, line it with some wrap she'd brought along with the water, and then fill it. Then it was just a matter of getting a Magikarp. For that she had a fishing rod -- also borrowed -- held over her shoulder.
"First thing's first," she continued to murmur to herself, placing all her stuff on the unoccupied bit of sand she'd found before pulling out the shovel. Right away she was getting to work. Digging the blade into the sand, pushing it deeper and deeper before pulling out shovelfuls of the soft stuff and placing it behind her. Patting it down before getting the next shovelful.
Before long she was sweating, forehead wet with the stuff and her hands and arms sore, but it was done. Now she just needed to line it with the wrap so it wouldn't soak up all the water. . .
ooc: enter pretty much however. passing through, getting done with a mission, whatever.

Ironically Dylan had always loved the beach, despite being a Magma Sergeant. At the beach he let out his entire team to splash around in the water scaring away any and all wild Pokemon that were in the area. His Nidoking stood solemnly on the sand, it didn't plan on getting wet at all today, all it wanted was to train and get stronger, his Skiddo pranced around happily splashing water all over the place few drops hitting against Nidoking, but not enough anger the beast. His Gastly rested under the shade of an umbrella where she'd usually be. Lucario and Dylan though the two off them splashed water at each other relentlessly making quite the racket.
Time would pass and the two in the water would grow tired and move back to there little set up on the shore to lay down and rest, Dylan opened up a cooler and pulled out his favorite treat: Oreo Icecream Popsicles. He gave one to all of his Pokemon to enjoy and then placed the carton back into the cooler and took out an ice cold soda pop. "Heheh, boy do I love a good ol' cold soda." He muttered as he looked around the beach, that's when he spotted Gwen. She looked exhausted, sweating and everything. Dylan stared at her for a moment and then decided to walk over to her, but first he dried himself up and slipped into his specially knitted by his mother Magma Hoodie. He didn't mind wearing just the hoodie, he could play it off as something else if someone ever asked him if he was in Magma.
Afterwards he grabbed an Ice Cream Popsicle and Soda for Gwen and made his way over with his Lucario behind him, he paused a few feet away from her. "Hi! Enjoying your time at the beach?"
Gwen grabbed the wrap from her bag and got on her knees before extending her arms into the freshly dug hole. The huge blanket of slick wrap was placed carefully in the bottom of it, pressed down into the sand before being pulled back against the walls of the hole. Bit by bit she tucked the edges into the sand and then tested the firmness of the sand a bit. Satisfied with it she stood up to walk over to her bag of fresh water but paused. A voice was calling to her.
"Dylan," the greeting was simple, accompanied by a nod, "Yes, but it would be better if you'd listen to what I told you." Gwen spoke bluntly as she walked over to the bag, grabbing the bag of fresh waters and carrying them to the edge of the hole. Once there she continued speaking, talking as she took the tops off water and began pouring them in a bottle at a time.
"How many times have I told you not to wear that hoodie outside? Do you want everyone to know where your allegiance lies?" Gwen herself had always avoided wearing any part of her Magma Uniform when out and about. It was dangerous. If someone you knew saw you your name would be everywhere within the week. Everyone would know you were a criminal, a member of the great Team Magma. It was something she didn't want to risk, not through her own actions or those around them.
After emptying a dozen or so bottles of water she stood and inspected the hole, looking carefully to make sure the water wasn't draining anywhere, and then dipping her arm into it to check the depth. She was sure a Magikarp would be fine inside. At least for awhile. Walking towards the edge of the beach she grabbed her fishing rod, looking over her shoulder before walking into the water.
"Feel free to stick around, but be quiet. I don't want you scaring away the fish," she even gestured for him to follow, afterwards putting her finger to her mouth to emphasize what she already said.

Dylan held out the Ice Cream Popsicle and soda for Gwen to take if she wanted it. "I know Dr.Gwen, but it's so comfy to where!" Dylan responded with his usual friendly and warm smile. "I doubt anyone I know will figure out I'm in Magma, I've done well enough to keep it hidden so far." He added and took a bite out of his Ice Cream Popsicle. "Even people who hate Magma to their core like Sylvester and even my own best friend William have no clue at all!"
"Plus what can they do about it? Magma is the strongest, and I'm gonna be at the top one day." Dylan said, his Lucario behind him nodded as it finished up the Ice Cream Popsicle it was eating. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a Gym badge with a wide smile. "See! I'm getting stronger and stronger by each and everyday." He then pocket the badge again and look towards his Lucario with a smile, remembering how he had swept more than half of Roxanne's pokemon. "Heheh, you can start calling me Sgt.Dylan."
Dylan would then peer down the hole she was digging and look back towards Gwen. "What's the experiment today Doc?" He asked, he always was curious about what Gwen was up to and wanted to take part in her experiments any way he can. "Or are you just fishing today for the fun of it?" Dylan added walking along with her to the edge of the shore and nodded when she told him to be quiet. "Definitely an experiment."
"If you get too comfortable you're going to make a mistake," Gwen's voice dropped to just a whisper, but still her tone was serious, "No one is lucky forever, eventually you're going to get caught or someone's not going to buy the excuses you give them. And then you'll not only lose your privacy, but those friends you're talking about." This was something Gwen had thoroughly thought out several times before. Even if he was getting stronger, even if he had become a Sergeant, this was how it would go.
"Congratulations by the way," she threw out the bit of praise as she cast her line into the water, watching it settle feet from where she stood, water licking at her upper thighs. It still was quite an accomplishment. Personally she'd never cared much for becoming a member of the administrative branch. She wasn't the usual grunt. She didn't participate in many missions and so who was in charge didn't matter so much to her. She was here to study, not to lead or be led.
"Today I'm testing the ability of a Magikarp to adapt suddenly to different kinds of water," she spoke simply, still in little more than a whisper, "If we succeed in causing the seas to recede I want to ensure that the pokemon within still survive. It's common knowledge that Magikarp can live in any kind of water, but can it adjust quickly between something like salt and fresh? If it can, and we can figure out how, it's possible we could breed other fish pokemon capable of doing the same."
As she spoke she moved her line around a bit, hoping to make the bait at the end of her hook look a bit more alluring. Her face was serious as she worked, eyes locked intently on her bobber, waiting for the smallest change in depth.

"Alright, alright, I won't wear it around." Dylan responded quietly, removing the hoodie and tossing it over to his Gastly. "I know what's at risk, I'll lose a lot of friends if they figure out I was in Magma. . . But there's not much I can do about it now can I? I'm in the team, and I doubt I can leave whenever I want. So i'll run with it." He added rubbing the back of his head. "I'm sure it'll turn out fine in the end."
"Heheh, Thanks Doc." Dylan replied, he wasn't serious about being called sergeant Dylan, he could careless about what position he was in, but he truly was striving to the top. There he could pull all the strings he wanted and turn the organization into something better than a criminal syndicate, perhaps into a research facility instead, that would help him with anything he wanted to study as the member studied whatever interested themselves.
"Ooh Magikarp, I knew a girl with a Magikarp. . . I beat her in a battle. Wonder what she's up too now." Dylan said, it was off topic, but Dylan had his question answered and thought it would be rude if he didn't respond with something. He was more interested into why she was doing such an experiment. "Oh I sea. . heheh. . . Yeah, that's pretty important to figure out, especially with Magma wanting to get more land to build more for the humans." Dylan replied with a nod, Doctor Gwen sure was smart, he wished he could learn more and be able to test experiments like her one day.
"Good, I'm happy you've seen reason," even in a whisper it was clear how serious she was about what she said, "What you can do about it though is keep it quiet. Like the whisper right now, you can keep your life and be a Magma without letting the whole world know. In fact you'll make a better Magma." She was completely honest with every word she said. Who wanted a member everyone could spot and identify in a crowd? How were you supposed to get anything done if you were arrested on sight?
"You want to climb the ranks, right? Well, learn to be discreet. There are many others who want to be where you want to be, and they're not nice kids like you. They'd rather tear others down than climb the ladder themselves. They lack the ethics you tote about on your sleeve," it seemed lectures were a staple of her meetings with Dylan. She wondered how this naive kid got so mixed up in the dealings of Team Magma. How he climbed the ranks and survived at all when he was so bright eyed and foolish in his interactions with others. It made her tired just to think of.
"As long as you're out in the open and lack that cutthroat attitude you'll lose this race of yours. And if you cross the wrong member you may even lose your membership, your pokemon, your life," she felt a tug on the line and so she tugged back, "Don't forget we're criminals. Some of us are just along for the ride, but others are murderers, thieves, and betrayers." One sharp pull and the Magikarp came up out of the water, wriggling and making some of the dumbest noises she'd ever heard. She reeled it in and pulled it off the hook before rushing to the Fresh Water pool she'd made and dropping him in.
"Just keep that in mind," she sighed, pulling out a notebook and pen from her bag and watching how the Magikarp reacted.

Dylan smiled even though she didn't show happiness, he liked to think she actually was showing it. "Maybe I can get another form of the uniform. . . One that doesn't have the emblem, but keeps the horns. It'd make a pretty cool hoodie if you ask me." Dylan said, and rubbed his chin thinking about it. "Maybe I can learn how knit a new one." He muttered as he pictured one though his imagination.
"Of course, I'm going to change Magma you know." Dylan replied and then shrugged his shoulders. "All those real criminals can just try, my resolves is stronger than anything they can put against me. Plus Cassandra and I are friends, she'll watch out for me for sure." he added, it was always good to have connections. "It'll be a good organization one day." He dropped the subject of changing Magma after that.
He didn't reply to her about saying he could lose his life, that was something Dylan had to think about on his own, and if it was all worth it risking it like that, but a question popped into his mind. "What do you think? Most people out here think once you're in Magma your some cold and evil criminal no matter what." He asked walking over to the fresh water. He then carefully examined the Magikarp seeing if it would react strangely.
Gwen couldn't help but think that the boy just wasn't suited for this life. His ideals were so strong, his faith in the humanity of every single member in the group unshakable. The mere fact that he thought he could change a whole organization was both admirable and the greatest show of idiocy she'd ever witnessed. Yet she stayed quiet. Why she couldn't quite place, but she didn't want to crush his hopes.
Instead she focused on the Magikarp in the pool. For awhile it seemed uncomfortable, splashing around in the water worriedly, gasping under the water like it couldn't catch a breath. Then, slowly, it adjusted. It went from uncomfortable, to uneasy, to the same dopey fish it always was. The whole process was documented by Gwen. She scribbled a page of observations, then another page of speculation, then a last page on how to apply that speculation. The experiment was quick and to the point. Much more so than most.
"Interesting," was all she had to offer before wrangling the fish out of the hole in the sand and carrying it bodily to the sea once again. There she dropped it, and there she watched it do much the same thing. Hands and body sopping wet she walked back to her notebook and wrote in it again, smearing a bit of the text but nothing so bad she wouldn't be able to read it.
"It's amazing the way people evolve when left in a group like ours," she sighed, sitting the sand and placing her notebook back in teh bag, "Some people do what the Magikarp here did. They feel out of place and nervous at first, but eventually come to accept it. The stealing, the fighting, the trouble making. The others, they fall off. They never get past that feeling that things aren't right, and eventually they get in trouble for it.
We're Team Magma. We seek to dry up the seas and expand the land so that man can prosper and the pokemon we favor can flourish. We're not sure how quite yet. We've talked about manipulating Legendaries, of causing volcanic disasters, to simply terraform with our pokemon. All disastrous plans that will complete our goal but kill pokemon and people alike, but we'll use them anyway. Our very existence is a crime, but one we've all accepted and agreed with for our own reasons.
To change the nature of our group you'd have to change the goal, and there are far too many devoted to that goal to just let it go. I myself have devoted over half a decade to this, have labored for hours studying maps, learning about climate changes and how to induce them, examining pokemon and how they act when it happens. I've tried to make sure that when we make our change it's as harmless as possible, but even I want it to come to fruition. Even I would be upset to watch all that work vanish.
I guess what I'm saying is if your ultimate goal through leadership is to change this group, you may want to consider giving up the red for a set of badges and fighting us like all the rest," Gwen's expression was a bit sad, but her voice was sure. And then she sighed and returned to her usual self.
"But that's something to consider another day," she spoke simply before standing, bag over her shoulder, "I've got data to analyze."

Dylan watched the Magikarp struggle for a bit before it stopped and accepted the change. It made him cringe, the sight of an aching Pokemon, but as soon as it started to relax he smiled. Interesting experiment, but Dylan wasn't going to comment on it. He looked towards Gwen, then back towards the Magikarp, and then back towards Gwen again.
He watched fish it out again and toss it into the ocean where it would struggle once more and than relax again. "Well. . . That was an interesting experiment." Dylan said, he couldn't help to keep it in this time around. He smiled, Gwen seemed more like the good kind of Magma, one who didn't care for the crime and stealing. "Heheh. . ." He chuckled, but stopped as soon as Gwen began talking.
He braced himself of a long lecture, it was something they had often when they were around each other. As he listened to Gwen's speech it seemed that Dylan had chosen the wrong words, and Gwen had misunderstood. As she got up Dylan got up as well. "Wait! I think you misunderstood, what I said in a poor way." He said and dusted the sand off him.
"I do not want to change the goal of Team Magma, the goal in my eyes is a good one. We're a team that wants what's best for humanity and Pokemon, but there are leeches in our group. Leeches that feast on what Magma has to offer, they don't care about the goal, they don't care about what Magma is about at all, they care about the free housing, the free food, the free Pokemon, the free clothes. That's all that matters to them. I'm going to get rid off the leeches, and continue to make Magma a more efficient team."
He paused to take a breath. "I also want to search for a way too bring change as harmlessly as possible, what you did here with this Magikarp that was close, with hardworking researchers like you Doc, we can bare fruit to a better world for humans and Pokemon alike. It's just the criminals, thieves, and murderers that abuse our team's kindness that bothers me. I only slightly want to change the group, I just want to weed out the people who have no reason to be in this group."
"And if there is no way to make a better world without the criminals, so be it. I just don't want the ones who aren't trying to help us with our goals." He finished with a slight sigh, he felt as if he angered Gwen. Slowly he began to recall all his Pokemon till only Lucario was left out. "I'm not giving up the red though, it's too late to stop now." He added slipping on a normal T-shirt. He then bowed towards Gwen feet close and foward, arms at his side. "I'm sorry if I showed any form of disrespect and if I have angered you today." His Lucario mimicked the action.
Gwen couldn't help the grin Dylan inspired. The boy had heart, a lot of heart. Personally she doubted anyone could change Team Magma and take it from where it was. Corruption was in its bone, the blood that kept its heart pumping and the gears that kept the machine moving. But she guessed, if anyone had the tiniest chance to make a difference, if she was being as optimistic as she could manage, that maybe Dylan had a chance.
"Well then Sergeant, I'll look forward to what you can do," she spoke simply, adjusting the bag on her shoulder before turning to look at the remnants of her test. She picked up her shovel and put it in her bag, grabbed the fishing rod with one hand, and turned to look at the water filled hole.
"It sounds like you're waging war on a concept, a battle rarely won, but I'll give you my vote of confidence," she continued, pulling the wet wrap from within the hole and kicking in its walls. The sand turned into mud as it soaked in the water, and then to clay as the sun warmed it. She wondered if the seafloor would do the same if they had their way.
"But if you mess up and get the big dogs on you don't come running expecting me to bail you out," while she grinned saying the words her eyes were a bit sharper than one would expect, "You know I'm a researcher, but you don't know where I got my start." She held the expression for a few seconds before the facade broke and a short spiel of laughter escaped.
"Just kidding," and she turned to go, just like that, waving over her shoulder as if an afterthought as she began walking away. While she did she wondered. What would she really do if that boy got on her bad side?

Dylan straightened himself out, Lucario following. He caught a small glimpse of Gwen's grin and that made him smile widely. "Heheh. . ." He chuckled quietly looking towards his fist extended out towards it, Lucario would then take its paw and hit it against Dylan's fist doing a 'brofist'. Together the two would begin packing up there towel, umbrella, and cooler preparing to leave.
"Just watch me Doc, I'll be at the top and calling shots you know it." He replied as he picked up his towel and threw it over his shoulder. He opened his cooler and pulled out another Oreo ice cream Popsicle, stuck it into his mouth and looked over to the fresh water pit Gwen had made earlier. He took a look into it and smiled faintly seeing his reflection.
"I appreciate it Doctor, I won't give up easily though, I'm sure there are others that feel like me somewhere in Magma." Dylan responded helping her kick in the hole with his Lucario. He watched it heat up and change state with fascinated eyes, the world was filled with fascinating thing in Dylan's eyes. No matter how common or trivial some stuff was it was always interesting.
"Don't worry about me, I won't drag you down with me, I'll handle it all by myself till I find others like me." Dylan said with a twinkle in his eye again. He then tilted his at what Gwen said next not fully understanding what she meant, but he laughed with her anyway.
"Alright, see you around Gwen-I mean Doctor." He said as boat pulled up to the beach. "My rides, here. . . third gym badge here I come." Dylan muttered as he moved closer to the boat.
