Petalburg City had a lot to offer. It was temperate, seemed to always have some kind of cooling breeze, and boasted various pools of water to doze around, but most of all it had the gym. For years gyms had been nothing to her. She was a researcher and proud member of Team Magma, there were bigger fish to fry than the Pokemon League. But recently she'd found herself reconsidering.
On Route 103 she'd done what she hadn't in years -- battled. And it hadn't been some chore like many things were lately, and it wasn't something she could do without feeling anything. It was exciting. She'd been thrilled, even when just facing the wild pokemon who'd cropped up on the route. For a little while she'd entertained a fantasy she'd all but forgotten about. An image in her mind of her facing the best of the best in battle. Little daydreams that accompanied math equations and scientific theory while she sat alone in the living room, doing homework and gazing out the window.
That was a bit much. The idea of facing off against the champion, of even having a chance to become the league's champion, but this? A gym battle? It didn't seem so foreign. So far away. That's why she stood in front of those doors, staring at her reflection in the glass. What if she just battled this one? Got the urge out of her system? No, she couldn't.
"I'm not ready," Gwen wasn't a little naive girl, she was a grown woman with a head on her shoulders. A couple wild pokemon were hardly a gym battle, and her team wasn't built with a battle in mind. Hell, she hadn't had a team until just the other day. The only one who'd tasted combat was Close, and he was likely too weak to face a whole team from a leader.
"Wishful thinking," she sounded almost bitter turning from the gym, pulling a cigarette from her pocket and placing it to her lips. A spark from her lighter and her lungs were full of the smoke. The urge seemed to fade, replaced by the nicotine in her system.

As he walked into Petalburg City and neared the gym, Sylvester cracked a wry smile as he noticed a familiar figure standing outside of the building. Approaching from their hind, Sylvester spoke loud enough to be openly heard by just about anyone when he neared five feet of their position. Just as their own, his reflection was mirroring back at them from upon the glass. "I don't really blame you..."
While Sylvester was looking quite smug, deep down he knew that there was a point in his life where he could relate to this very moment. Yet upon overcoming his doubt, Sylvester also discovered just how strong his pokemon really were. If Gwen were persistent, one of these days she would realize what more there was to her and her pokemon besides theories about fossils and the correlations of different pokemon species within the same types. Though that stuff was fairly interesting.
When she turned to leave the gym she hadn't expected to be stopped by anyone. The streets had been fairly quiet on her way to the building, and no one had approached her as she stood outside contemplating a mistake-to-be. Usually the intrusion would have been irritating. No hello, no introduction, just words. But then again, that was this man's style.
"I don't blame me either," she said frankly, blowing smoke in a direction away from the younger man's face, "My pokemon aren't well trained and I don't have a fighting type. I'd lose before I got my first order out." Usually she'd explain her theories neutrally, with her voice inflecting as little as possible and her tone more or less flat, but this time that bitterness still lingered on her tongue. Despite her dismissal of the idea she still found herself struggling with it, the little girl that still lived inside of her refusing to give up the dream.
"It's been," the word was full of implication, "Some good, mostly bad. How many times has Venipede bit you since we last talked? Any scars?" She was teasing him, grinning like she had when they'd last parted.

"Good to know you've been fine, and no. Venipede actually seems a lot better now that I fed him some rare candies...you'd be surprised of the results." Yet Sylvester would hold that back for another time on a different day. For now, he pondered on why exactly she felt so inclined to have a fighting type pokemon. "I won't lie, obviously I used a fire type pokemon to beat him...but that doesn't necessarily mean you have to have one to win." Sylvester allowed his own playful smile to bout with the one she gave him.
"You could always just train several pokemon just as well and defeat him with persistence. It doesn't take long for pokemon to acquire some discipline. If what you said is true, his first pokemon don't have much of that, or anything going for them. Shouldn't be too much to handle for someone with a doctorate, right?" He taunted a little bit at her capabilities as a trainer. Sure, Gwen knew plenty about pokemon and that was worth something in it's own right. Yet, Sylvester felt as though she was going to make the wait longer if she thought like that. Maybe it would be best, though. An amateur trainer like himself couldn't really be the judge of that, now could he?
"Funny," her response to Sylvester's comment of "fine" was short, but not without its own grin. She listened to his testimony on his own gym battle while puffing from her cigarette. She hadn't necessarily meant she needed a fighting type, but that it would have supplemented her pokemon's lack of training. Still, she let him go, commenting only when he finished talking about his idea for her.
"I don't know champ in the making," the title was one he figured he'd find entertaining, "I have a doctorate, but I've never trained a pokemon. Don't get me wrong, I get the idea. I've had my fair share of battle classes in school and college and know how a pokemon grows but it's not my strong suit. Not a whole lot of reason for me to get the badges either. No champion aspirations here." With a sigh she snuffed out her cigarette early, dropping it mostly unfinished before stomping it out with her shoe.
"I used to really like those classes," it was more a statement to herself than to Sylvester, "So, why are you here in Petalburg?" She switched topics without missing a beat, raising an eyebrow at the man.

"Just enjoying the nostalgia. Petalburg is a key point in any trainers journey, especially because of Mr. Briney out in the next route." He wondered then if Gwen ever shared any interest in pokemon contests, since the topic of her enjoying her pokemon battle classes was on the table already.
"How about contests? You care about those?" Sylvester then followed up with more about the question before Gwen could interject. "There is going to be a contest in Slateport soon, or so I heard. You'll need to talk to Mr. Briney to get there." He supposed it may have been obvious already, but it felt better to kill the time talking than in awkward silence. Even if Sylvester preferred his peace and quiet. I know I will be in attendance. Seems like a nice distraction from my training, and acts as a vacation of sorts. Arceus knows I need one." Andrea's lingo was rubbing off on him.
Gwen knew of Petalburg well enough from a trainer's eyes. Many got their first pokemon from Birch, and from there battled Norman as their first gym leader. Though some waited to fight him as their third or fourth instead. Not that the order mattered. Every badge was momentous for a trainer whose goal revolved around them. So though she didn't tend to get nostalgic over things, she understood the desire to revisit a victory.
"Contests? No, I don't have an interest in them," they'd always seemed frivolous to her, "They're so gaudy and flashy. They lack the necessity of a battle and the practicality as well. They just seem like a huge waste of time." She spoke directly on the matter. Contests had honestly never agreed with her, and she'd only ever met one Coordinator worth seeing again.
"Mr. Briney's a good man, and quite a character to spend a boat ride with," Gwen remembered the man well, he'd taken her many places for her research, "But a distraction is the last thing I need right now. This," she gestured to the gym, "Is about as much as I can justify."

It was surprising Gwen didn't seem to care much at all about pokemon contests. She must have been a very practical-minded person with a low amount of tolerance for wasting time for the sake of entertainment. Tending to her studies must have been her own personal fantasy to fulfill, which was hard for Sylvester to keep in mind or relate to. "Oh well. I guess you won't be bothered by anyone like me since you won't be there." He let go of a playful smile towards the doctor, before looking at the gym.
"So I guess you'll just be training and looking for powerful pokemon to catch while I'm gone?" It was plausibly weird how Sylvester appeared so concerned with what Gwen was doing, though it humored him to get his mind inside the life of a professional scholar. While his parents did exceptionally well with business, Sylvester had not actually been exposed to a lot of work in his life. Most of his time was spent learning academics, and being tutored by a retired pokemon trainer who was hired by his parents to help him learn the basics.
"Do you have any favorable pokemon in mind, or do you really just care about their typing?" He asked in hopes of learning a little more about Gwen's personal side when it came to pokemon.
"Heaven on Earth, I'll only have one annoyance to deal with for awhile," Gwen spoke teasingly, she found it oddly easy to be playful towards Sylvester. Still she wasn't lying. If she could get away only being annoyed by Anastasia for a couple days it would truly be like heaven for her. The prospect almost made her giddy. All the process she could make!
While she was more comfortable talking with Sylvester now, the amount of probing set her a bit on edge. She wasn't so sure she wanted to let this man know her every move. Having others know too much about her team could lead to problems down the road. Especially considering her concerns from their first meeting.
"My team has gotten larger recently, I figured I'd try and round it before I challenge the gym," she gave enough details to answer the question, but avoided specifics "Types mean a fair bit to my team building, though if I find any impressive pokemon type of course stops mattering."

"Care to elaborate some more?" Sylvester began to suspect she may have been lying. When he asked about her interests, Gwen simply answered as vaguely as possible. Did she not really know enough pokemon to have a favorite? Remembering that she knew something about Venipede, his suspicions began to simmer down. "Or maybe tell me what you're looking for? Who knows if I may stumble across one in my travels and capture it for a friend?" Sylvester tried to give Gwen incentive to tell him what she was looking for.
"I get around a lot, so I am sure we'll see more of each other. Besides, soon enough here we're gonna have to battle anyway." Another smirk, though this was more subtle with arrogance. While Gwen was confident in her studies, Sylvester felt the same with his pokemon. Whether it be a mystery match or not, he wanted some closure on which of the two was the better trainer. "Right?" He waited for the doctor to concur with him on that.
"No, not really. I've got a love for many pokemon since I've studied all sorts. It just kind of comes with the territory," Gwen spoke simply, not even thinking before she opened her mouth, "and if we have to cross paths down the road isn't it better for me to keep things quiet on my end?"
What Sylvester had to say next only assured her that she was making the right move. If the man would cross paths with her several times in the future it was more than a little likely that he'd make some kinds of discoveries. He'd stumble by at an inopportune time or with unfavorable company and they'd have to battle for real. And even if they just intended to battle for sport it was better to keep her hand to herself.
"That is of course assuming you're not just all talk," again she was back to teasing the younger man, "You'll get to see what pokemon I favor soon enough if you really want a battle." She grinned as she spoke before adjusting her clothes. She lifted her shirt, a simple short sleeve, to expose the belt holding her pair of shorts in place.
"For now you can just see how many I have, and know there'll be one more by the time we next meet," Gwen rotated her hip to expose the five pokeballs currently clasped there. They caught the sun and shone, each one polished and carefully maintained.

Sylvester acknowledged the count of pokeballs residing at Gwen's waist, taking into note she would have one more pokemon than that. "I guess you'll just have to surprise me then?" Another smile flashed towards Gwen with a subtle laugh to follow. Judging by the way she didn't want to tell him, he wagered that was probably her own sort of strategy, or she genuinely was trying to surprise him. "I look forward to it, actually. Battling someone new is always exciting." Sylvester knew it would be fun, though it still bothered him Gwen couldn't talk about her pokemon with him yet.
"Do you think you'll have a badge by then?" Sylvester teased with his question, giving Doctor Gwen an amused look as he awaited the answer.
"That's exactly what I'll have to do," she replied with a genuine smile this time, "I mean, I figure it's fair. I know you have a Venipede, you know I have a Litleo, seems a decent trade for now. Imagine how nice it'll be to just actively adjust to a blind team." Gwen was excited by the prospect. She hadn't battled another trainer many times in her life, and she forgot how thrilling it was to imagine. The active mind games, the strategy, the on the fly reactions. The high of victory and the crash of defeat. And then she looked at the Gym and remembered she'd feel it there first.
"I don't think I'll have a badge," she said with a sigh, looking from the gym to Sylvester, her smile turned mischievous, "I know I'll have a badge." Then she couldn't help but laugh. It was such a cliche, and it felt so foreign coming out of her mouth. She'd always hated people who talked like that, but it felt right when she said it now.
"On that note, how many badges do you have champ in the making?"
Post by Sylvester Blackburne on Aug 11, 2015 22:16:14 GMT
I suppose so." Even though Sylvester had divulged a little more about his team, it quite simply made things interesting. He would be glad to find out Gwen's pokemon team soon enough, wondering just what kind of potential it possessed when she flared confidence that she would undoubtedly have a badge by the time they battled. "And I only have one badge at the moment, working on my second from Roxanne in Rustboro. It won't be long at all, I wager. I've got my Slowpoke, Brolaf, to help me out." He mostly made mention of it due to it being one of his favorite pokemon ever. Primarily because it was a water type that didn't necessarily have to be anywhere near the water.
"So you'll be challenging Norman here first? Is that right?" He heard of it from her that trainers could challenge different gyms in a varying order than normal, though Gwen seemed keen on it being this one. 'Maybe I should expect he to have a fighting type? That would be a good match-up for my Sylveon...'
"One badge, hmm," in her head Gwen mapped out the region. There were three badges fairly close to where she stood. Obviously Norman was available, but Roxanne -- as Sylvester mentioned -- wasn't far, and Brawly was just across the sea. Rock and Fighting, easy fights for her team thanks to Smiles, Sandy, and Hops.
"If this proves interesting I might take the gym challenge, everyone needs a distraction," again she spoke more to herself than the young man beside her, turning to him with a grin, "And if I do I figure we'll be meeting more than once or twice down the road. Plenty of chances to cross swords," again she was smiling, enjoying the idea. Though in her mind she wondered if it would bite her later. If she battled him so many times wouldn't he learn to recognize her team? What if they had to fight under different pretenses down the road, how would she keep it hidden who she was? It was a bridge to cross when she reached it she figured.
"Of course this is the first hurdle to get over before I think about anything else. Who knows, maybe the gym battle will be boring and I'll decide it's a waste of time like contests," she noted, answering Sylvester's question without actively addressing it. At this point she figured they'd been talking long enough. If she wanted to challenge Norman any time soon she figured she'd want to head to the woods nearby and quickly finish her team.
"So, see you elsewhere?" Gwen asked, raising an eyebrow and offering a hand, "And next time I get to test my team against a real trainer's. Exciting." she stretched her fingers as she waited for a parting handshake, looking the man in the eye as she did.
