It had been a relatively peaceful day with the clouds littering the pale blue skies. The sun snuggled behind the puffs of white the surrounded it. It had been a nice day for travel, that's for sure. Thus that was exactly what Syndra was planning to do. She had made it to slateport somewhat early and she had wanted to scout the route ahead towards Mauville before the event. The route was infamous being a cycling route and even looking up at the overhead road was both intimidating and awe inspiring. That said the female knew she was likely never going to be going on that path so she tried not to think on it too much.
Getting to Slateport was easy enough. Mr. Briney's ferry service saved Basil the grief of getting to Slateport on foot, but now it was back to trudging through route after route. This particular route was different though; it was the famous Cycling Road, one of the many scattered throughout the region. While he had no bike, there were lanes available for people who wanted to walk. "Mmm." It wasn't long until he spotted someone familiar. A flash of green and a feminine physique was all Basil needed to see before he immediately made the connection. Calmly, he strolled over, not wanting to get too hyped about running into a friend.
"Hey, Syndra," he greeted, tone calm and composed. "Nice seeing you again. Have you been well?" Scar was nowhere in sight. Odd. "I stopped by Rustboro for a little bit, but I didn't see you there. It doesn't matter too much though. At least we've ran into each other now."
The familiar voice calling her name made the female turn heel relatively quickly to see the source. On sight Syndra's lips curved into a friendly smile as she raised her hand to wave to him. "Basil! Nice to see you again too," she called out with her normal upbeat tone. For now the lack of sight on Scar with the man evaded her as she walked over to him. "I've been well. Sorry we didn't get to meet in Rustboro but better late than never," she chimed as she held her hands behind her back placidly. The last time the two had met the female had battled with Basil's scary gliscor and it didn't particularly end well. She also left her Sandile in his care as he showed interest in the ground type. "What about you? You look well." Maybe that was because he didn't have a scary ass Gliscor creeping on his back.
He waved a hand dismissively. "Like I said, it's fine. There wasn't too much for me to do in Rustboro anyways. I haven't gotten around to challenging any of the gyms yet," Basil explained. "I don't have enough Pokemon yet. I only have two: Scar and that Sandile you gave me. That makes me wonder where Scar is at now?" Confused, Basil looked around in an attempt to spot his starter. Finding an eight foot tall Gliscor wasn't too hard of a task. "Huh. I don't know where he went. He probably wanted to stretch his wings or — ... whatever flying Pokemon do." Yeah, he wasn't too certain about that.
"But other than that, I'm doing well. What have you been up to lately?" he asked before suddenly realizing something. "Oh, and that Sandile you gave me is doing well. I'm still working with him, well, trying to work with him at least."
At Basil's words the female was skeptical of what he said. It wasn't hard to lose sight of such a large pokemon. There was a bit of nervous laughter but all in all Syndra kept her composure. "I'm sure he'll turn up eventually," she offered hopefully. Otherwise the threatening beast would likely have eaten a whole village by then. Sighing at the thought she redirected herself to Basil's question. Thinking on it momentarily she gave a small shrug. "Traveling mostly. Some training and the like here and there."
At the mention of the ground type pokemon she smiled. She would have kept the pokemon since both the sandile and the sandshrew got along so well but the Sandile wasn't fitting into the rest of her group well. If Sandile was happy with a new trainer then Syndra wouldn't regret her choice of allowing Basil to raise him instead. "I'm glad Sandile is doing well and has a good home. Actually if you want we can battle for a bit as practice."
"I sure hope so. You know what happened the last time Scar went missing for a long while." Then again, the Gliscor had to eat somehow, and the Pokemon hunting for his own food meant that Basil didn't have to worry spending countless sums of money trying to feed the giant beast. Yeah, people thought it was messed up and cruel, but how did they think Pokemon survived in the wild? The concept was exactly the same.
Syndra had spent most of her time traveling and training, the routine amongst trainers. Her next request made Basil arch a brow. "A battle with Sandile? Uh. Sure?" He really had no reason to decline. Holding up a finger, he dug through his backpack before he pulled out a specific Pokeball. After that, he tossed it gently to the ground; it cracked open and released the quadruped reptile. Immediately, the feisty little thing started snapping his jaws all over the place, beady black eyes darting between the two humans. He wanted to start some shit and now!
"He's got a lot of energy ..." Basil commented absently, rubbing his cheek. "I haven't even given him a name yet. I ... don't know what to call him really."
Seeing the Sandile again was a nice sight and with how active it was upon being called out it was comforting. "Ah, I never really name my pokemon but I'm sure whatever you call him will be fine." Her tone was reassuring as she gave a small wave to her old pokemon. Knowing that her Sandslash would likely like to see her old friend again, Syndra took out the pokeball which contained the ground type and lobbed it forward to summon the pokemon forward. On appearance the female Sandslash stretched. Seeing the Sandile though the pokemon looked happier than it had before. "You can spar with this one. I'm sure she'll be happy to teach stuff, right Sandslash?" The words caused the pokemon to pause and look back at her trainer curiously. Almost as if asking if she was serious.
Calling the Sandile 'Sandile' was fine now, but Basil still wanted to give him an actual name. After all, what if there were multiple Sandile in the same place, and Basil needed to single his particular Sandile out? It wasn't too much of an issue now, but Basil wanted to avoid stress whenever possible; this trainer business was already mind-wracking enough.
Once Syndra sent out her Sandslash, Basil took a moment to appraise the ground-type Pokemon. She looked strong, much more powerful than the rookie Sandile. Basil's lips thinned; Sandile was going to get trashed. "Well, just go easy on —" Basil stopped, eyes widening as the little Sandile dashed forward, stubby little legs carrying him at a surprisingly swift pace. He opened his fang-filled mouth wide, aiming to bite his good buddy right on the arm. Basil looked from the sidelines, speechless.
He already had the Pokemon Center's number on speed-dial. Syndra Mawdrey
While the attack was done quickly without the prompting from Basil, Syndra expected it. This was the same treatment that the Sandile had before she had caught it and even when in her care. It was a handful. That said Sandslash did nothing to stop the attack. Allowing the crocodile pokemon to bite into her clawed arm, she used to other to pat the smaller pokemon on the back. Syndra's gave an awkward smile at that. She should have expected this.
"I don't think going easy will be a problem," she said with the tone of shame painting her words. Sandslash clearly wasn't going to be taking this seriously, going as far as to show off a bit. Taking the quills on her back the ground type began shooting off Fury Cutter but not at the Sandile but at the ground in such a way that it would look like a dart board from an aerial view. "You can keep attacking her if you want but I'm forfeiting this one. Sandslash needs to learn it's not okay to underestimate opponents." The sound of that made the Sandslash huff again to her chagrin.
This was embarrassing. The damn Sandile was so hyped to fight that he didn't realize that he didn't stand any sort of chance against the much more experienced Sandshrew. Still, that didn't stop the little ground-type from fighting with all that he got. Sandile bit the shrew's arm and kind of just sat there once the Pokemon gently patted him on the back. Wait, it didn't hurt her? It was strange; yeah, the two of them were buddies, but a battle was a battle! Frustrated, the Unova Pokemon released his grip and leaped backwards, beady little eyes narrowed in a glare.
So what did he do? Well, he did the only thing he could do: try and bite Sandshrew again.
It was somewhat comical watching the sand gator waddle around the fury cutters sent his way. Thankfully, they weren't aimed directly at him; otherwise, he would be in an immense amount of trouble and by that, it would be a miracle if he didn't just blow up as soon as the Fury Cutter hit him. "Syndra, I'm really sorry about this," Basil apologized, resting a hand over his face in dismay. Pokemon training could be extremely stressful, despite what peoples' opinions of it were.
As Sandslash kept taking the hits, slowly but surely the attacks would begin to affect her. That said she had her pride and she refused to attack the small crocodile even with the encroaching pain. It left her trainer with only embarrassment at the act. Basil apologized first to which she waved her hands in front of her as if to say there was no need. There actually really wasn't after all. "No, no it's completely okay." Looking over the two Sandile did look more happier when with Basil and more animated. With her he was more content. It made her wonder if her training style wasn't fit for the two ground types she had as she now stared at the ground type. "I'm not used to training or battling either. Plus Sandile used to be mine so I understand completely how it is."
