"C'mon, hurry up Usa!" Today they were going to make the trek to Mauville, though they weren't quite certain how to go about such a feat. Dmitri heard tales of a cycling road, but that there were other ways. Today they would find out.
"Which way should we go?" He seemed to wait up at a crossroads, where one way led to a cycling road and another through a narrow ravine-like passage that took you to Mauville. He wondered what Usa would look like dressed in full cyclist gear. The thought made him want to find out, but rentals were expensive.
"Probably the lower passage? I don't have a proper bike, and that sign says no pedestrians." I'll have to save that thought for another time. He started down the path ahead of Usa; he felt rude making him keep up, but things started to feel a little awkward around Usa. They'd danced and it was wonderful, but... that was it.
There was still so much more to the situation, waiting to develop. Dmitri shook his head of the thoughts clouding his focus. Later.
"I don't know if I feel like fooling around with any wild pokemon we find. I've already got quite a handful already. What about you?" Perhaps if Usa wanted to, it would change his mind on the matter. But he had a certain alternative in mind for them to discuss later.
Usa moved as quickly as his average length legs could carry him. A trip to Mauville sounded like a good idea at the time, but clearly he should have put more thought into it. No bike, no running shoes...the day was going to be a long one. Usa took refuge in the thought that this little trip was his travel partner's idea and not his own. Only then was he able to make sense of not having the day completely planned out.
"Coming", he yelled as he leaned against a pole to catch his breath. Man, seems like we've been walking forever. As soon as his heart beat had tamed, he ran towards Dmitri. Moving passed him, he yelled playfully and with a smile: "Let's go this way". After a few feet however, he had to stop again to catch his breath. Man, I am out of shape today...must be from all the danci...ng. A memory of him dancing with Dmitri suddenly popped into his. He quickly dismissed the thought, by slapping his cheeks. Turning toward Dmitri, he said in response: "Mmm, my party is almost full. But, a ranger can never have too much Pokemon. You never know when one might come in handy".

"Oi! I get first dibs on anything cool." There was some tall grass in the way, but nothing they couldn't dart through before a wild pokemon appeared. Their movements were much easier to detect in the day, and there was nothing to indicate they were about to be attacked.
"What the heck is that?" Dmitri pointed at some odd, blue salamander looking creature just on the side of a nearby stream. Is it saying Whooper? It seemed like a funny creature, but he refused to laugh at it... until it tripped over.
"Haha! What a-uaahhh...!" Of all the rotten luck... Just as he turned away his shoe tucked underneath a knot of grass and tripped him. It was abrupt and unexpected, bringing him face first into the dirt in an instant.
"What a mess..." He spat out a chunk of dirt and grass, spitting until the grainy substance seemed to finally rid itself from his mouth. It took him a moment to consider the situation. I-in front of Usa, aww man, I look like such a dork right now...
Usa burst into laughter. "You're such a dork", he said teasingly as he walked over to Dmitri with a hand extended, "Good thing you're not bad to look at or nobody would want to hang out with you".
The atmosphere seemed relaxed enough, and this was the kind of exchange he was used when hanging out with his brother. This is exactly how it should be. Who cares that I was a weirdo on the dance floor. He chuckled as he slowly leaned over to give Dmitri a hand. Now, what would I say to my brother in a situation like this? Ah, right, maybe something like... "Serves you right for laughing. Be more careful next time". He winked and stuck his tongue out to show that his comment was more meant in fun that scolding.

It might have broken him on the inside, hearing Usagi call him a dork so casually. It was one of those words that carried more weight than it should as far as Dmitri was concerned.
Good thing you're not bad to look at or nobody would want to hang out with you. These words redeemed Dmitri, and gave him faith in Usa. Did he just say I was handsome? He reached at Usa's hand, using it to leverage himself back onto two feet.
"I was careful!" Glancing at where he'd fallen, he noticed a patch of grass spun into a dome, perhaps to nestle some wild pokemon inside for the night. They were long gone now, whatever it was, but its mark had been left behind to spoil Dmitri's mood.
"Let's keep going..." He tugged on Usa's hand, forgetting to let go by now. He looked back... Usa's face was just as flushed, perhaps more flushed than his by now. Maybe this isn't so bad. Dmitri was having more fun than one might think possible after falling on one's face in the dirt.
"Usa, I..." He looked away, struggling to find the words. His hand tightened around Usa's, but his arm was shaking at how anxious he felt. Just a few, simple words. He bit his lip, straining to make the sounds come out.
"I... I think we should have a battle to celebrate, when we get to Mauville I mean."
There it was again. That weird feeling that Usa couldn't explain. Well, guess it wasn't the food after all. Was this what they meant by Butterfrees being in the stomach? Love? Nah, couldn't be. He shook his head to shake the thought out of his mind. Didn't quite work. Perhaps it was the fact that Dmitri still held on to his as they ran. Usa squeezed Dmitri's hand slightly, hoping to draw the fact that they were still holding hands, to his attention.
Usa I...? Usa, what? Something about what Dmitri said didn't seem right. If it was a battle he was after, why would he not declare it like he did when they first met? Usa gripped Dmitri's hand tightly and then slowed his running until they both came to a stop. "Why not have one right now", he asked in a slightly annoyed tone. His annoyance wasn't exactly Dmitri's fault. Usa was more annoyed at himself. He felt pathetic for not know what was going on. And, his suspicion that Dmitri was hiding what he really wanted to say was not helping. Was spending most of our time together at the Gala, dancing with each other, and holding hands right now, making Dmitri feel weird? The thought of him forcing friendship -- or whatever this was -- on Dmitri caused him to suddenly pull his hand away. He was visibly lost in thought, but the words fell from his lips before he even realized it. Coiling his hands into a fist, he boldly declared: "I think I might be falling for you, man". As soon as the words escaped his mouth, his knees became weak and he stumbled back a few steps. He dropped his gaze to the ground as he brought his hand up to massage the bridge of his nose. "I don't know what that even means for our friendship, or whether I actually am falling for you...I don't even know what falling for someone really means...but all the signs point to it...all the signs are similar to the heroine in this one book I read anyways..." He continues to ramble on awkwardly as he slowly struggled to make sense of the bomb he just dropped.

Wha-what...? Apparently this was it; end of the line. Whatever Dmitri had been holding back, needed to be freed and thrust upon Usagi. Whether it was to end poorly or well, neither youth could have known.
He's shaking so much... Dmitri felt at fault; please, oh please, don't have Usa break down into tears. It wasn't the ending he wanted, rather Dmitri wanted Usa to smile. It was all he wanted to do for Usa, to make him smile. It reminded him of sunflowers, for some odd reason.
He lunged at Usagi, quickly grasping at his hand once more, refusing to give up the hunt. He didn't look into Usa's eyes either, not yet; but clasped against him so intimately, he felt an understanding between them. Neither were confident about the situation.
"I know... Just promise me as a bottom line, you'll always be my buddy." Bringing a hand up to Usagi's cheek, he tugged at his jaw to get a good look at his eyes. Dmitri's were already glimmering with stifled tears trying to find their way out. But he refused to cry when he felt so overjoyed. He could barely see Usagi past the welling water in his eyes.
Usagi's look were the bottom line; a single tear darted down his cheek, dripping onto their interlocked hands. I could never get tired of a face like that. He leaned back in, nuzzling Usagi back into his chest. Just like then...
Usa's lips slowly curled into a smile. His cheeks slowly turning a soft red hue, he said softly: "Of course we'll always be buddies, budd. You're my Dmitri". He pressed his forehead against Dmitri's chest as he reached around to rub his back.
The warmth of Dmitri's embrace confirmed two things: First, he wasn't just imagining things. Dmitri also had feelings for him. Second, there was definitely something there for Dmitri. He slowly moved his hands down to Dmitri's hips, and then used them to push himself out of the embrace. "Alright, alright...too much mushy stuff", he said teasingly, "you weren't this sappy when we first met, were you?" He flashed a smile as he brought his hand up to wipe Dmitri's tear. Yup, just like my brother... He recalled a moment when he had to wipe the tears from his brother's eyes after he fell from a tree.
After slowly sliding his hand down Dmitri's arm, he slid his fingers through Dmitri's and locked their hands together. Putting his other hand in his pocket, he started to move forward, pulling Dimitri along. "It's okay, you take your time", he hummed, "I'll take the lead for now and get us to Mauville..."

"All I saw was a trainer back then. This is different..." Dmitri hustled to keep pace, striding along the route hand-in-hand with Usagi. It would go down as one of his fondest memories of Hoenn region, if and when he returned home. But right now, returning seemed like the last thing he wanted to do.
"Are you sure we're heading the right way?" His vision was blurred, and Dmitri was disoriented from his natural sense of direction. Follow the cycling road overpass... Yep, it certainly seemed to be the right direction they were heading along.
Dmitri began to think about what they could do next, after they reached Mauville. Of course he'd prompted a battle, and he doubted Usa would refuse, but the thought of what came next appealed to him. I want to take him to dinner...
"Mhm, I'm sure", Usa hummed. But, he actually wasn't. He just needed to keep moving -- moving away from what had just happened. He was for sure happy that their little talk concluded positively. This fact was obvious from the smile that was plastered on his face. But, their little talk really did nothing to answer some of the initial questions he had. Even worst, it brought up new ones that weren't as easy to get answers for.
A rush of thoughts flooded his mind: Okay, so what do I know... I have weird feelings around Dmitri, and he seems to have the same feeling. But, is my feeling love? Is his? Are we just weird friends who don't know how to be friends and so we express our friendship in a weird way? What do we do now? How am I suppose to ac? His thoughts went on and on.
"Eat", he casually responded "Anything really, as long as it doesn't have a face".

"So are you, like a vegetarian, or something?" Dmitri couldn't think of a solution other than to avoid anything meat. I guess it's okay, if it's for him. He followed on after, chasing after the bounty ahead. They were just a few more narrow pathways away from the outskirts of Mauville City, but the obscuring scenery made that little note indiscernible.
"I'm tired of walking, aren't you?" Planting himself on the grass, he tried to catch his breath. Why am I so exhausted? His whole time in Hoenn had been one long stroll, from city to city, so it stood to reason he was just genuinely tired.
But he couldn't shake the feeling, he needed a moment to calm down. He felt unnaturally hot, and his clothes were starting to plaster against his skin. Perhaps this was the heat exhaustion his parents warned him about? ...Dmitri feared nothing.
"Uhm..." Wooziness, yeah, this was definitely something gone awry. He yanked a water bottle from a strap on the side of his backpack and began chugging, spilling water down his throat and soaking his collar.
"I think I'm getting heat exhaust." Is that even the right way to say it? There wasn't a point in asking, he relaxed and eased himself onto the ground for the time being. Hopefully Usa wouldn't have wandered off too far ahead without him.
"Hey, Usa... Can we take a break?~" It came off more like whining or begging, but Dmitri refused to budge regardless. Something was definitely wrong.
The further they walked, the more Usa's mind became preoccupied with other things, like; where were they? How far was the city? And, why the heck was it so hot? The path seemed endless, and the surge of energy that came after his little confession was slowly running dry.
He stopped for a moment to look back at Dimitri. Somewhere along the line, he had fallen behind. To Usa's surprise, the zeal Dmitri had earlier had faded. He sat on a patch of grass a few steps behind, exhausted and covered in his own sweat. Usa chuckled at the sight of him, not sensing anything out of the ordinary. He slowly made his way towards Dimitri. As he did, he retorted playfully: "No, I eat meat. I just don't want to see a head".
He squatted next to Dmitri as he replied: "I'm getting there. I was about to suggest we take a break". He gave Dmitri a quick look over. He wasn't looking so good. "Maybe we should move into the shade", he suggested, "and then you should take your shirt off, too cool down...here, have some more water". He reached for Dmitri's water bottle and gently brought it up to Dmitri's lips. He then maneuvered his hand under Dmitri's arm to help him stand up. He nodded in the direction of a tree. "Let's go over there". He positioned himself just incase Dmitri needed to lean on him.

"Oh, you eat meat? Good..." He slouched against Usa, using him for support as they trudged slowly towards the tree's shade. Water came as a welcome relief, but soon his water bottle ran dry. I always did drink too fast. His mother always scolded him, for not savoring anything. It finally came back to bite him.
They finally made it to the tree, and Dmitri gladly threw off his shirt. A warm breeze kicked up, helping to dry the sweat off him and his clothes. He handed his clothes to Usa, pointing to a low hanging branch. He didn't want to put on wet clothes, they would need a chance to dry.
"Look, you're already taking care of me. We're like, mates." The heat had gone straight to his head; he was a bit out of it, delirious and mostly just having a good time. Taking off his shirt felt comfortable, it was much warmer out than he'd originally anticipated. The breeze felt amazing against his bare chest, relieving him of the dank moisture that clutched at his skin vehemently.
"If you don't take off yours, I'm going to feel all alone and weird!" Actually, no, I just want to see for myself... His head swayed with the wind, to and fro, eyes glued to Usagi's. He might have felt out of place, but then again, he wasn't quite himself. But he retaliated against his own inner desire; people could be watching. Dmitri was a selfish figure.
He clutched at Usa's wrist, just in case he meant to strip his shirt as well. His mouth curled into a smile, and he laughed. "Sorry, I was getting greedy.~" He was still clinging to Usa's arm. Was I kidding? Yeah, he most certainly was, at least while in public.
"I used to think of back home, but now... I don't think I want to leave Hoenn. Ever."
Usa's soft smile slowly morphed into an awkward chuckle as he took Dmitri's soaked shirt from him. I wouldn't do this for Risu...he thought, as he slowly turned to walk away. His face took on a disgusted expression as he pinched the edges of the shirt and held it away from himself. Usa took care, however, to not let Dmitri see that he was a little grossed out by the moistness of his shirt. It's soaked. My hands are all wet from the sweat... Mind you, he too was sweating. But, there was something about coming into contact with someone else's sweat, that didn't sit right with him. It was just too soon for him to be comfortable with it.
Dmitri's tug on his hip caused him snap around. His facial expression now one of curiosity, he listened as Dmitri expressed how he was feeling. Nope, not taking my shirt off... Usa's awkward smile expressed his thoughts perfectly. But, he laughed outright when Dmitri explained that he was being greedy. Was he joking? Was a laugh an appropriate response? It was still a funny thing to say. Wait...what exactly was he being greedy about? Usa soon shook the thoughts out of his head and walked over to the tree branch that Dmitri had pointed out earlier. With one quick through, he tossed the shirt over the branch. He then quickly leaned over to wipe the palms of his hands on his knees. Wet, wet, wet, wet, wet. Once he was satisfied, he turned around and walked over to Dmitri. After plopping himself down next to Dmitri, he leaned against the tree. He took a deep breath in as a cool breeze danced across his face. "Still thirsty", he asked in a gentle tone.

"No, well, maybe. But I feel better in the shade." Dmitri adjusted to the shade, and his body seemed to cool down because of it. He thought about how kind Usa was, to not have left him stranded there for slowing him down.
"... I never did thank you, did I." It wasn't a question; it was a statement, one that made Dmitri feel ungrateful. He grasped Usa's hands and held them firmly; and stared at him, hoping to shower Usagi in how serious he was.
"Thank you for being nice to me after I was rude. Thank you for dancing with me at the Gala. Thank you for not abandoning me for slowing you down. Thank you..." He felt tired and exacerbated from the sun beating on him. But Usagi made him feel better, somehow. Getting that off his chest was an even more fulfilling sensation.
"I've never told you about back home, have I? It's a beautiful place, if you want to hear about it..." He couldn't blame Usa for not wanting the story, they were busy after all. Yet Dmitri couldn't help but think of back home, now that he'd found another one in Hoenn.
