hello calamity! we're nearing the two months mark in a few weeks. how time flies! right now we have two things going on that need your participation. the first is an activity check! it is impotant that you check in so you don't lose your face claim. the second is the otm nomiations! we're doing it a bit different than last time. so please submit your nominations in. a vote thread will be up in the next few days. there will also be a formal event coming very soon, so keep your eye out for that. keep being cool!
we're currently about to host calamity's first contest in slatepor. trainers are flocking to the city to see, the city's been trying to get good pr since the gala, and it seems to be working! they're asking for both coordinators and volunteer judges to sign up.

After a long journey through route 104, Usa found himself dodging people on the bustling streets of Rustboro. His eyes had a hint of wonderment as he observed every building, every Pokemon and every passing stranger. Though he was exhausted from the travel to the city, he still managed to have a pep in his step and a smile on his face. Never mind that his hair was plastered down by sweat and his shirt had little sweat stains speckled all over, he was happy to be in the city and nothing would change that fact.
He strutted down the street merrily with his Absol by his side. First on the agenda was finding a place to take a shower. The Pokemon Centre perhaps? Next was meeting Andrea, Dmitri's friend. Dmitri had mentioned that Andrea also had an Absol, and that her Absol knew some powerful moves. Of course, being an Absol trainer, this sparked Usa's curiousity. He wanted to meet her. He wanted his Absol to learn from her.
First, though, he needed to take a shower. Meeting someone for the first time, especially one of Dmitri's friends, meant that he couldn't afford to look sweaty and tired. He quickly weaved through the crowd, on his way to the Pokemon Centre.
andrea had taken full advantage of this moment. resting upon the comfy cushions of a couch made available to visitors, the girl decided that a nap would be appropriate. after all, she still had a few hours until dmitri's friend was scheduled to arrive. beerus was settled at her feet, appearing immensely satisfied by the cool and smooth tiles of the pokecenter's floor.
"this - ah - guy we're suppose ta meet," the coordinator started. "he's gotta absol, too."
"ab?"
the pokemon raised his head to look at his mistress, eyes gleaming with interest. andrea quickly took notice to this and grinned.
"yeah. yer 'bout ta meet another one of ya, boy. i know absols aren't too common 'round these parts. so it'll be a treat."
"absol..."
beerus's gaze shifted toward the door.
"he won't be comin' in fer a while. so i suggest ya get comfy."
she fell asleep, but the absol remained aware for a while longer - eager to encounter one of his own. the minutes passed. and then the hours. the soft breathing of his mistress coupled by the occasional snore or snort began to lull beerus asleep - and, eventually, it did. his eyes fluttered shut and he surrendered to blissful unconsciousness.
The Pokemon Centre, finally... Usa scurried through the doors of the Pokemon Centre. His eyes searched the place for anyone familiar, but soon focused on the nurse standing at the centre of the room. As he made his way towards her, he combed his damp hair back with his fingers. Leonidas walked proudly beside him, subtly growling to announce his presence.
After a brief exchange of introductions, he was ushered by the nurse to a room in the back that had a shower and a small changing area. Usa was relieved. Had he ran into someone he knew or Dmitri's friend, it would have been a travesty.
Now all clean and well put together, he made his way to the Pokemon Centre's lounge. This was where he would meet Andrea. Sensing the presence of another just like him, Leonidas quickly rushed over to one of the couches in the room. There, a women slept. Beside her, an Absol aslo slept comfortably. Was this person Andrea?
Usa contemplated whether he should wake the woman. He decided against it, however, just incase she was one of those angry sleepers. He'd certainly had his fill of angry sleepers growing up with his brother who was not too fond of being woken up in the mornings.
Guess I'll wait for her to wake up... He threw himself into one of the chairs that was on the opposite side of the room, and pulled a book from his backpack. Making himself comfortable, he slumped into the chair and began reading. Leo followed suit by making himself comfortable by Usa's feet. Thought the dark-type appeared relaxed, he vigilantly stared at his Absol brethren, with a glimmer of distrust in his eyes.
beerus was the first to stir, eyelids lifting to reveal the blurred shape of a human and a pokemon. shifting slightly, the young male yawned and shook his head, attempting to regain some semblance of focus.
"absol?"
once he identified the distracted male and his absol whom peered in his direction, the dark-type slowly stood. his head remained slightly bowed, making himself appear somewhat submissive and nonthreatening. some pokemon were rather protective of their masters and mistresses - so he remained patient as he approached at a sluggish pace.
"ab..."
his noise twitched and he inhaled leo's scent, familiarizing himself with the younger male.
"huh? mmm...."
andrea had awoken moments later, mouth open to release a yawn and lips smacking.
"holy shit how long was i out?"
she glanced at the clock, squinted her eyes, and eventually peered in her pokemon's direction.
"huh? beerus? there's two of ya."
the coordinator snorted, finding what she had just said positively amusing. after standing and stretching, the female approached the ranger's absol, a grin on her face as she eyed it.
"now, aren't ya a handsome fella?"
the girl peered up at usa.
"yer usa, right? dmitri's 'friend'?"
a playful gleam entered her eye.

Movement from across the room alerted Usa to the waking of the woman and her Pokemon. He peered over at the two from behind his book, watching their every movement. Whereas her Pokemon seemed more cautious, she was a little more direct and forceful in her actions. Her manner of speaking seemed very blunt, as well. This made Usa nervous. Even though he too was often direct and blunt, he had little experience dealing with someone who was the same.
As she made her way towards him, Leo stood upright. The dark-type grinned and pushed out his chest in response to Andrea's compliment. Meanwhile, Usa dropped his book to his lap and flashed her a smile.
I am Usa. And, you must be Andrea, right? As he stood up to greet the woman and her Pokemon, he stretched his hand out for a handshake. I've heard so much about you. It's nice to finally meet you.
Usa had a nervous smile on his face. He hoped that he would give Dmitri's friend a good impression of him. This was not the case for Leo. The mention of Dmitri's name caused him to wince and take on a rather agitated demeanor.
andrea responded with a firm handshake of her own, her response rather enthusiastic as she shook the male's appendage roughly.
"it's nice ta meet ya, too! and, yeah, i'm andrea alright. the coordinator type."
she flashed her teeth.
"yer usa... the ranger type."
there was something odd about her tone.
"whelp! i heard ya wanted ta teach yer absol some sweet moves!"
beerus glanced toward the male and female, curious about what they were about to discuss. his mistress appeared quite eager, her mannerisms conveying her motivated state as she spoke.
"everythin' comes at a price, though," she drawled.
she gestured toward beerus who cocked his head in confusion.
"one battle between our absols. win or lose and i'll teach yer pal ice beam and dark pulse in exchange. deal?"

A battle? Win or lose, Leo learns a powerful move? Sold!
Usa's eyes eyes widened with excitement. Gripping Andrea's hand more firmly, he shook it in a manner that showed just how excited he was. Sounds like a good deal to me, he responded with a huge grin on his face. He then turned to Leo a smiled at him. You hear that, Leo? You're gonna learn another powerful move! Leo responded with a strong sounding roar. "Ab-SOL", the Pokemon let out, signalling his agreement to the proposition of learning a new move.
Leo's attention then turned to the other Absol. With a faint but confident smile, he gave the Absol a quick nod.
Shall we go outside then? Usa asked, as he raised a hand to point to some glass doors that seemed to lead to a backyard. I'm sure the nurse would be upset if we messed up her nice lounge area...

"glad yer eager fer it!"
andrea nodded in agreement to his statement regarding where the battle should take place. but, she had another location in mind.
"the weather's good. i know this great place where we can tussle."
after casting her absol an excited look and gesturing for him to follow, she turned away and began to lead the other pair outside and into the streets. she navigated the populated city, relishing the memories that it brought her. when she was a kid, she use to run amok in places such as these - claiming certain streets as her territory and building up a reputation because of it.
"ain't it grand, boy?"
"absol!"
beerus appeared to enjoy the bustling environment as well. plus, his mistress's positive attitude was truly infectious, the dark-type delighting in her good mood as she whistled a simple tune. eventually, they arrived at their pre-determined destination.
"here we go!"
white paint indicated that this particular area was dedicated to battle. it was settled in-between two towering buildings, and was available for use.
"beerus, over here."
andrea settled onto her side, prepped to get started.
"yer free ta go first, usa."
"ab!"

Usa more than welcomed Andrea's short tour of the city. It was nice to see the bustling streets without the added pressure of finding a shower. Even better, Andrea's familiarity with place added a different perspective than what his touristy eyes would ever be able to muster.
The four soon arrived at a secluded battlefield. Usa's eyes widened as he took in the various details of the environment. His lips slowly curled into a smile as his focus bounced from place to place. Who would have guest that amidst all the hustle and bustle, the city would have hidden within it such a serene place? Only the subtle words "wow", escaped his lips.
He had little time to be fascinated, however. Andrea had already taken her place on one end of the battlefield. He took note of the fact that she seemed like a no-time-to-waste kinda person. This made him smile because he was the same. He and Leo quickly took their places on the opposite side of the field from Andrea and her Pokemon. Upon her offer to let him go first, he called out for Leonidas to attack. Leo, let's start things off with fire blast... He figured starting big would set the tone for the rest of match. Though he knew this was only a superstitious thought, he felt that it was needed to get Leo more pumped up for the battle. As soon as the dark-type let out a hurricane of flames, Usa ordered for Absol to follow up with a quick attack.

"try a dodge!"
the absol wielded his natural grace, bounding toward the beautiful manifestation of flame before executing a well-timed leap. he slipped through the roar fires, and met the absol headlong. the male allowed for their bodies to come into contact as the quick attack struck. and despite the pain that caused his body to ache, beerus stood his ground - betraying nothing. lips curling to form a snarl, his baser instincts decided to take the reigns for a short while. intending to assert his dominance over leo, andrea's dark-type released a low growl, boldly putting his pride at stake as he issued the male a challenge.
"ice beam!"
leaping away from his foe, beerus's maw opened wide. he revealed pointed teeth as he inhaled, his furry chest expanding as the chilled beam took shape. a bolt of ice formed before it was thrust toward leo at high velocity.
"follow it up with a fire blast!"
allowing for his mistress's excited tone to motivate him, the pokemon exuded a fire blast of his own. the kanji-shaped power was soon speeding toward the other.

Given the distance at which Leo fired his fire blast, it was only natural that the opposing Absol was able to evade it. This confirmed at least, that the match wasn't going to be easily won.
Usa smiled at the opposing Absol's display of speed. Absol's was a natural speed demon. And, Usa knew all too well how much of an advantage that speed gave Absol in battles.
But, there was a problem. Whereas Andrea's Absol was able to dodge fire blast because of distance, Leo had closed that distance with his quick attack, making him lose the same advantage of distance to dodge the opposing Absol's attacks.
One after another, Andrea's Absol fired powerful attacks. First an ice beam. Beautiful. Then a fire blast. Glorious. The ice beam blasted Leo, sending him backward a few steps. The fire blast, on the other hand, he was able to move out of the way of, just in time.
Counterattack with fire blasts of your own, Leo, Usa yelled. Leo quickly complied, sending blazes of fire in the direction of the opponent.
releasing a low hiss as the first fire blast connected rather harshly, andrea looked on - a displeased expression on her face as her pokemon's stance wavered. he appeared to have suffered from a hefty amount of damage. she realized, at that moment, that the battle was now out of her favor. but she was unwilling to give the boy an easy victory.
"dodge it! and then a fire blast!"
the air was already hot from the one that now sped toward him. and the girl felt sweat begin to collect on her brow in response to the dramatic increase of temperature.
"ab!"
preforming a dodge that lacked his usual grace, beerus struggled to maintain his proper posture as he faced leo.
"absol!"
he shot off one -
"again!"
- and then another.
"hang in there, beerus!" andrea called.
a smile slipped on her face despite it all. this was pretty wicked, in her honest opinion.

Leo's fire blast did more damage than Usa anticipated. The dark-type smirked as he tilted his head back and pushed out his chest -- a display of cockiness that prompted an exasperated stare from Usa. The battle isn't over, Leo. Get your head back in the game... Usa's tone was stern. He was sure to keep the dark-types cockiness in check, lest he get carried away and lose focus. Not that Usa was any better. He had his cocky moments as well, and this is perhaps where the Pokemon got it from.
The sizzling sound of an eruption of flames, coming in their direction, quickly snapped the trainer and his Pokemon out of their little moment. With little time to evade the incoming attack, Usa called out for the Absol to use detect. The Absol's body glowed as he miraculously swerved out of the way of the fire blast. Good job...Usa yelled, Now respond with a fire blast of your own!
Leo inhaled an enormous amount of air before unleashing a storm of... nothing. The Pokemon had a dumbfounded look on his face. He began to pant as he attempted to use the attack again. Still, nothing. It seemed he had overexerted himself in the battle.
Boom! Another fire-attack hit the unsuspecting dark-type, sending Usa into a panic. L-Leo, are you alright!? The Absol roared in pain, but quickly emerged from the flames in an attempt to calm his trainer's nerves. "Ab-Absol!" Leonidas cooed as he tried desperately to shake off the heavy hit that he just received.
Still panicking, Usa yelled: Quick attack. USE QUICK ATTACK! Without hesitation, the dark-type lunged at his opponent with thoughts of revenge littering his mind.

the quick attack slammed into the weakened absol's body. the harsh blow resulting in beerus blacking out before he had even collapsed onto the pavement. andrea watched on, startled that she had been defeated in short order by the lower leveled dark-type. but, she merely nodded after a moment. accepting that she had lost - fair and square - without complaint.
"ya did good, pal," andrea praised.
a small smile formed as she recalled her unconscious pokemon to his capsule. she glanced at usa, opened her mouth, and then appeared to be struck by an idea.
"ah..."
she carefully plucked a capsule with a psychic-type insignia etched onto its surface from her belt. tentatively, she summoned her small inkay who appeared at her side. the floating pokemon's gaze shifted around before she eyed the weakened absol that stood nearby.
"yo... usa? i gotta ask a favor from ya," andrea said, pausing briefly before continuing. "yer gonna get yer moves fer sure now. so don't be afraid ta deny or accept. ya get me? mileena here needs some serious help. and she could use the experience. would ya mind if she fought yer absol?"

Usa looked at Andrea curiously after hearing her request. He contemplated saying no, but figured the woman had done him a favour by promising to teach Leonidas a new attack for free. And, in the process, Leo was able to gain more battle experience.
He looked down at the rather exhausted Pokemon before him. The Absol looked like he would drop at any minute. Perhaps that's why she wants to battle him instead of one of my other Pokemon? The thought didn't sit right with him, but he smiled and nodded in response, signalling that he was okay with her request. I'll help you out, but only if Leo is up for it...
At the sound of his name, Leonidas shook his head in an attempt to shake his exhaustion away, and then quickly stood tall. His panting, however, was a clear indication that his attempt failed. Are you sure Leo? The Pokemon roared in response. His pride would not allow him to turn down the offer of a battle. Okay then, looks like Leo is okay with battling. I'll do it, but can you promise something? Could you teach one of my future Pokemon ice beam? I don't think I want Leo to learn it, but I also don't want to pass up the opportunity. After his little request, he extended a hand towards Andrea and said: I'll let you make the first move...
