staryu is very lost. it's been abandoned by a trainer, left in a pond to live the rest of its life. staryu lays there, hardening its outer shell once in a while in case another pokemon attacks. it drifts along the surface. life is so boring.
Wesley took in a deep breath as he made his way down Route 101 with his brand new Piplup trailing alongside him. The pokemon was far cuter than he would have picked, and he wasn’t entirely stoked about water types, but she was his, and that was all that really mattered. Wesley was sure that eventually Cailleach would grow up into a fierce battler. The professor wouldn’t give him a weak pokemon, right?
As the pair walked along the route, Wesley caught sight of a Staryu lazily floating on the surface of a nearby pond. At first his interest was low because it was another water-type, but then he figured it’d make a good first battle for him, and Cailleach. Plus, if it ended up being strong then he’d have the opportunity to add another pokemon to his roster.
“Cailleach. See that Staryu?” He asked, looking down at the Piplup. “We’re going to fight it.” The pokemon was a little conflicted about attacking an unsuspecting pokemon, but she also wanted to impress her new trainer. “Use growl, and then pound it.”
The piplup steeled herself before quickly running up to the edge of the pond as fast as her little feet would take her. As she approached, she let out the closest approximation to a growl that her beak could make, and it ended up being a lot less fierce than she intended. Unfazed by the fact that she’d missed her intended effect, she jumped towards the Staryu, and attempted to jump up, and pound it’s face with her feet.
staryu looks up at the sound of a growl. it jumps up from the water, but it could not stop the slap that sends it flying across the water. staryu hops up - how rude! it hardens its shell on its body before spinning towards the pokemon.
A warm sense of pride swelled in Wesley’s chest as he watched the battle unfold. It was impressive to see the unassuming little blue penguin launch itself at it’s opponent with determined fervor. It was an admittedly unimportant battle, but it was the first, and it excited Wesley. This was what his life was going to be like, and he couldn’t wait.
Of course, the battle at hand was more important than the future right now. Cailleach needed instructions as her attack landed, and the Staryu prepared for retaliation. “Great, Cailleach. Just keep pounding it for now!”
As the orders were shouted, the Piplup reacted. Their compatibility wasn’t perfect, and her reaction speed was a little slower. This, along with the fact that she was terribly inexperienced, led to her first attempt at attacking to be a resounding failure. Before she could even try to pound the other water pokemon, it landed it’s tackle.
Ignoring the pain, Cailleach launched herself at the Staryu to try and successfully pound it. This went as well as she or her trainer could hope for, but despite this she would retreat after attacking the first time. The effects of being tackled still lingering. She wasn’t necessarily scared, but she was more wary of the other pokemon. After retreating for a moment, she would once again turn to launch herself at the other pokemon to pound it into the water.
another pound sends the staryu reeling back into the water. it was nearly over, the staryu was on it's last leg. it stands on the grass, and witht he last of its strength sends a water gun at the piplup.
With the latest attack, it was obvious that the battle was nearing its end, and in favor of Wesley and his piplup. However, despite the fact that it was obviously not going to last much longer, the staryu didn’t seem like it was about to give up fighting. It was impossible for Wesley to not be impressed by the spectacle, and he debated whether or not to try and catch the water pokemon.
As Wesley debated, Cailleach awaited orders. When they didn’t come, she wasn’t sure what to do. It was obvious, first and foremost, that she needed to dodge the water gun’s torrent, but this revelation came too little too late. She managed to move, but in the process she just made it easier for the water to blast her square in the chest. The force launched her back a couple feet, and she landed on her back.
“Just take a nap, Cailleach!” The trainer called out, before pulling a pokeball out of his pocket to throw at the injured staryu. “We’re gonna get a new teammate.”
the staryu is sucked into the pokeball. it's too weak to fight. it's surprised that the trainer doesn't attaack it again. it doesn't struggle. the pokeball only jiggles for a moment before stilling.
staryu is captured ! there can be no more pokemon. you may continue to post.
As the pokeball jiggled, Wesley watched it intensely, almost as if trying to will the staryu to stay by the power of his gaze. With the amount of bravado the pokemon showed in it’s last attack, he was worried that it might try to escape the pokeball. After a couple moments, his fears would be proven misplaced. The pokeball remained still, and made the characteristic click that signified the pokemon was caught.
Once the ball stopped moving, he grabbed it off the grass, and shoved it into his pocket. Welsey also took this opportunity to take out Cailleach’s pokeball. “You did a good job today, Cailleach. We’ve got a long way to go, but this was a good start.” He smiled, activating the ball to call Cailleach into it.
It felt good to have a new pokemon under his belt, and to have won his first battle. As he continued his way to Oldale Town, he had a spring in his step as a result. If things continued being this good, he’d be able to heal up his companions in town without any complications.
As he made his way along the road, his mind drifted to the pokemon egg tucked safely away in his pack. Wesley still didn’t know what pokemon it was, let alone the typing. It was orange, so he was hoping for a fire-type, but for the luck he was having it’d probably be a magikarp or something to that effect. Still, he was just starting out. For all he knew, his pillup and staryu would end up being the only water types he got.
