| Foolishly, she had thought that today would be different. She didn't know what was in the water causing all the teenagers of Littleroot Town to decide, on a whim, that this was the week they would leave their homes and adventure out into the wild blue yonder. Maria didn't mind, per se, but the entire...process of leaving home was made that much longer because the local professor was always busy.
So busy, in fact, that there were people milling about in the waiting area of his lab or in front of the building, anticipating the call that would grant them their first pokemon. Sad enough to say that Maria was one of those people. Why she believed that a Saturday morning, at ten am exactly would be the perfect time to show up and get on with her mission in life was...questionable. Most people would be sleeping in, she assumed, or busy doing something that didn't involve Professor Birch.
Sweet Arceus she was so wrong.
Perched in one of the many folding chairs along the wall, Maria was waiting to be called into the back office. She hadn't a clue what her options would be and while her phone could only tell her so much (mostly she was on reddit reading through other people's processes), it would do little to help when the time actually came and the pokeballs were presented to her. Pulling the corner of her lip into her mouth, she nibbled on it fretfully, her green eyes arching up and away from the screen of her mobile device to the people milling around, also waiting.
Light chatter served as background noise and the receptionists were polite though mostly unhelpful. It wasn't their faults; they hadn't expected so many people to come today either.
Poor planning strikes again, the girl mumbled, though her tone didn't ring true with agitation or ire. She was excited, nervous, and a little apprehensive, and she hated waiting around, but it wasn't enough to make her outright pissed off. Well, not yet anyway.

Ventus didn't like crowds. Or people in general really. In all honestly he thought that the majority of humanity were disgusting, greedy, selfish beings who cared only for themselves. He learned to loathe humans to the point he stopped seeing himself as one. Sure there were a few humans in this messed up world that he respected- his grandparents for one- but what he truly cared for were pokemon.
Pokemon were amazing creatures that Ven had learned to truly respect and cherish. Their thoughts weren't as complex as a human's and that's is what's so lovely about them. They don't have any deeply profound emotions beyond the most basic ones. Sure it depended on the pokemon and their human interaction but Ven saw them all as pure, untainted beings- superior to humanity. Why they are caught and forced to fight he didn't know.
And he hated himself for doing the exact thing he despised. But, it was a lesser evil in the scheme of things if the young Trainer wanted to become Champion. To be the new Champion he had to play by their rules, sadly. So this is why he found himself in a crowded 'waiting room' amongst other antsy and nervous would-be-Trainers who were waiting for their chance to get their very own pokemon.
Some people sat in the fold up chairs lined neatly against the one wall- while others took to pacing or standing awkwardly while glancing around. Ventus however felt more comfortable in the far corner near the entrance to the waiting room, his cold gaze surveying those around him. None of the people stood out to him but the sight of a blond haired, green eyed woman caused the young man to stare intently.
She seemed less nervous and more anxious compared to the rest of throng of humans. He couldn't explain it but he found the woman intriguing if only slightly. However, his own social awkwardness refused to let him move from his position- so the young human hating blond just settled with staring at the woman fiddling with her device. WORDS 000 TAGS @maria NOTES Yay for creepy guy in the corner! xD Hope you don't mind me plopping Ven in here! |

| It didn't feel like the line was moving. Of course, this was line in the metaphorical sense, not an actual queue that was wrapping around the building in an orderly fashion. It might've been a better idea instead of come in, sign in, wait to be called and dick around until said calling happened. Maria hoped that it was a list they were using and they were going down said list instead of picking and choosing whoever had the coolest names. The receptionists wouldn't be that douchey...would they?
Maria shifted in her seat, the tiny hairs on the back of her neck standing on end. She glanced up, her viridian eyes peeking around the room, glancing from face to face. She felt like someone was watching her and it was unnerving. It made her tense, her shoulders hiking up toward her earlobes, a frown making her brow wrinkle. Maybe she was just imagining things. There were enough people in here that it could've just been an off-color glance from somewhere. No need to get tense.
A rush of movement suffused the area. People were suddenly standing and milling about and the volume in the room increased considerably. Wanting to know what all the commotion was about, Maria too stood, arching up onto her tiptoes even to see past shoulders and between arms. It seemed as if the previous group had come out with their starters and they were the ones making the noise, slapping their friends on the back, passing the red and white ball between their hands. Well, the line was moving after all.
'Carlos Vaeh. Kristine Jones. Malcolm Stone. Brandon Greyjoy. Denise Gallagher. Ventus Graceheart. Maria Nobel. Thomas White. Please report to the lab for your starter pokemon choice.'
The megaphone that the receptionist lifted to her lips cracked after she was done, but Maria wasn't paying attention to that. She was already weaving through people, smiling and muttering every 'excuse me' in the book to get to the door quicker. And along with the others, she passed into the cool laboratory and gasped at the many pokeballs that she saw. She couldn't believe this was actually happening.
Barely managing to stifle a girlish squeal of excitement, she rushed forward, not paying attention to what she was doing or where she was going, and plonked directly into Ventus's back.
Shit, sorry! she chorused, her hands reaching out to steady him. She had almost knocked the poor kid over. Excitement got the better of me. I swear I don't intentionally try to run down my fellow aspiring Pokemon comrades. | | | | | BY EDWARD OF GS |
