The Pokemon Center bed was everything promised and more. It was always nice to curl up on a nice soft mattress after a day of walking and talking. The previous day had been a hassle, between touching base with Birch while giving nothing away and meeting that rowdy trick of an heir she'd been thoroughly exhausted, and so when they checked into their rooms she'd gone straight to bed. She'd intended to sleep nice and long, but then somehow woke up before sunrise. And then for the life of herself couldn't get back to sleep. She muttered a curse before getting up and heading to the Pokemart.
"I'm going to pick up some cigarettes," She announced to the quiet room, not expecting her companion to hear her from the neighboring room or to respond if she had. So far Anastasia had shown very little interest in her, so she figured it wouldn't matter if she just up and left her alone for a little bit. Hell, she expected to be back before the girl woke up. How early could a young girl really wake up? Especially after a day out.
Not even bothering to change she walked out into the crisp morning air wearing the shorts and tank top she'd worn to bed, with the only addition being a great zip-up hoodie she'd fished from the bottom of her bag and thrown on absentmindedly. When she reached the Pokemart they were just opening and popped in before they'd flipped the sign, they still hadn't when she left, pack in one hand while the other fished in her shorts for the lighter she'd left in them after her smoke the night prior.
"There we go," She murmured to herself when she finally got her fingers around it and a cigarette to her lips. Soon the lighter followed, and then she was blowing smoke as she strolled back to the Pokemon Center. Or at least she would have strolled back to the Pokemon Center if not for a rustle from close behind her. She saw a form dart into the trees, and suddenly curiosity had grabbed her. She found herself walking north, into the dead end route beyond the town, she'd intended to investigate the little channel here anyway. Might as well take advantage of the spare time.
"jigglypuff!!" a small, squeaky voice calls out. she jumps out of the bush and stops right on the road of the route. it's so early, most people would be asleep by then -- but apperently, not this girl! jigglypuff takes the discarded marker on her hand and like a mic, starts singing into it.
It didn't take Gwen long to find what she thought was the form that darted away from her earlier. A Jigglypuff -- the Balloon Pokemon. All at once she summoned up everything she knew about the Fairy type. Notorious for its lulling melody that it sings at every opportunity, sturdy but not a necessarily hard hitting opponent. Not that it would have to if she and her pokemon fell asleep.
The Sing set her to wobbling for a second. The Jigglypuff's soft voice seemed to take hold of her lingering sleepiness and wrench it to the surface. A yawn pulled its way up her throat and out from between her lips. Her legs felt weak, and for a moment her eyelids felt heavy. But not for long. With a stomp of her foot she righted herself, and another drag from the cigarette between her fingers refocused her mind.
"Enough of that," her voice was firm as she pulled a pokeball from her pocket and threw it forward. From within a Litleo sprung forth, an intimidating Leer in his eyes. Close didn't appreciate being up so early, and he'd make sure the opponent he was facing understood that. After issuing a low growl from his throat he lunged forward, throwing his whole body into a Tackle.
"Let's show it what you're made of."

the girl nearly falls asleep, but she's strangely persistent. no matter, then! jigglypuff is always up for a battle. litleo pins her with a glare. she flinches and lets the pokemon barrel into her before smacking the pokemon away and curling into herself.
At such close range it was impossible to respond to the attack from Jigglypuff. Close was smacked across the face and sent reeling, a hit that wounded his pride enough to earn another growl, twisted into a snarl towards the end. Again his eyes narrowed in anger, Leering at his big pink puff of an opponent again. Gwen was quick to respond.
"Keep some distance, show it where you shine!" It had been a long time since she'd last been part of a battle. In school there had been classes for it, simulations where she'd either pick up some random pokemon or go through a computer program and chart out a strategy on the fly. But that had been years ago. She hadn't battled in what felt like ages, yet she remembered the fundamentals of her partners.
"Stay on your toes, don't let it shove you around!" The Litleo responded well enough, having already taken a few hops back he proceeded to fire a volley of Embers at the Jigglypuff, a determined expression on his face.

jigglypuff feels litleo's strong gaze again and flinches. the fire that it spews from its jaws makes her body charred and burned. she feels an unusual type of intensity from it. fine then! they'll attack from a distance, so she will too! she sings again and aims her voice at the litleo.
Gwen smiled to herself as the battle proceeded. She was a bit rusty, no doubt, but she hadn't lost it. Already she could feel a heat rushing through her, inspiring one feeling. Excitement. She felt excited! Her posture changed slightly, legs spreading and body bracing down as if she herself were part of the fight. When the sing started she saw an opening.
"Quick! Rush it! Don't waste the running time either, make sure you're doing something! She shouted to the Litleo, calling out over the sound of the Sing. Close responded quickly, running forward while bringing fire to kindle in his mouth. Crackling fire and the wind in his ears made the Sing all but nonexistent as he approached. Then the Embers came flying, one after another out of his mouth until he was within diving distance.
"Go! Tackle!" Gwen's shout was accompanied by the Litleo's attack as it threw its whole body into a Tackle. If it landed there was no doubt it was going to sting.

jigglypuff faints from all the attacks, hoping dearly that she's not going to get eaten or anything, because that'd be rather bad. she bounces away from the litleo and ends up on the ground, bruised and charred.
natu hops by. she's completely oblivious to the battle before her, at least until she spots gwen and freezes. natu stares at her and her pokemon. if gwen moves, she'll start fleeing.
The Jigglypuff going down with Close only lightly damaged was good validation for Gwen. She'd maneuvered that expertly. Sure, it was just a wild pokemon fighting on instinct, but she knew trainers who would have struggled in that kind of fight. Almost instantly she started moving her hand to her pocket to pull out an empty pokeball, but froze when she saw another pokemon appear.
A Natu. They weren't fliers, but they could hop awfully fast. As if that wasn't enough they were skittish. She gave Litleo a quick look before locking eyes with the Flying Type, knowing if she moved or broke eye contact it would hop off.
Close, on the other hand, understood her look perfectly. Moving on instinct itself, the Lion Cub pokemon lowered himself to his belly and began to slowly crawl around the Natu. Suddenly he wasn't the passionate fighter he'd been earlier. Now he was a silent hunter, setting himself up for a surprise attack. Once he maneuvered around the Natu he pounced, using one Tackle in an attempt to knock the bird off its feet and another to try and pin it under his body.

natu's pinned by the litleo's huge paws. it leaves her flapping desperately to dislodge herself. she pecks at her feet and tries to even fire a ghostly beam at the pokemon, but unfortunately it's unaware of the pokemon's typing.
With the Natu now pinned Gwen allowed herself to move freely. Finally she pulled the empty pokeball from her pocket so that she could drop it onto the fainted Jigglypuff. One capture. From there she then observed Close, having thoroughly subdued the Natu. Its Pecks connected but seemed to do little to the Lion pokemon, earning only growls in response.
"Knock it out, but be gentle. No permanent damage," it still felt like fire was running through her veins, but Gwen managed to center herself again. She had to be calm. If she let her excitement get the best of her or let herself get reckless there was no telling what mistakes she'd stumble into. Even though right now the situation seemed subdued, who knew what would come next?
Still, right now there was no danger, and so Close had his fun subduing the Natu. He let it go before re-pinning it, snapped a bit in its face, and then, only then, gave it another smack with the intent of knocking it out cold.

Again Gwen crossed the field, moving to the unconscious body of the Natu. Another empty pokeball fell, and another pokemon was captured. That was two. Her team was already looking stronger. But Close was looking weathered. He was obviously tired after back to back battles, and she didn't feel comfortable using Smiles in combat quite yet. She'd have to finish up here soon.
"Hang in there," She murmured to the Litleo, noticing the rustle in a nearby bush and spotting the Cacnea as it stepped out onto the field. This would be a quick fight, Gwen was sure of it. Especially since, even with exhaustion beginning to set in, Close looked more than ready to tangle with the opponent in front of him. He knew that after this they'd leave, and he wanted nothing more than a good rest.
"Burst it down," Her words were simple, but followed up by another phrase, "Make sure you leave it breathing." Close snarled in response before charging forward, taking the Poison Sting directly and feeling their venom course through him. Still he pushed on through the pain, ignoring the sting in his shoulders and chest to fire off a volley of Ember, and even managed to throw himself against yet another opponent, hoping the Tackle would subdue it.
lv9 | male | rivalry | moderately injured ember, pound, leer CLOSE was POISONED!
ember serves to burn up cacnea's plant body, and with the final tackle, sends it hard into the ground. the pain is too much, and cacnea quickly loses consciousness.
cacnea fainted! capture? litleo gains 2 levels!
there can be no more pokemon you may claim the thread or continue posting GWEN DARBY
Soon after the tackle Close couldn't help but collapse, not fainted but unable to go on. The poison in his body hurt too much, and the wounds had piled up to an extent where it was painful even to stand. Gwen couldn't have been more proud of him. Grinning affectionately she came to him before the Cacnea, spraying him first with a Full Heal and then with a Potion.
"You did such a good job, thank you Close," She spoke gently patting his head as he pushed himself shakily to his feet, "That should hold you over until we get to the Pokemon Center, just hold on friend." With that she returned the Litleo to his pokeball before standing to face the Cacnea. The poor thing had never had a chance.
"You fought well enough too I guess, but we'll have to work on that headstrong nature," she murmured to the pokemon as she walked to its fainted form. A pokeball was dropped on it and, after a selection of clicks, it was hers. These three would make for good additions to her party, she was sure of it. And for the first time in years she cared. She'd forgotten how fun a battle was, how invigorating the real time planning was and how stressful it was to watch your pokemon fight through pain and exhaustion.
"We'll have to do this again, and soon," she murmured again, placing the now occupied pokeball in her pocket before pulling out another cigarette and lighting it. Somewhere, somehow her last one had fallen out of her mouth.
