The urge to round out her team brought Gwen to the woods. She had five pokemon, all decent enough on their own, but before challenging a gym she figured it would be a good idea to figure out a last member, and the woods were full of pokemon. Just the types she needed too.
"You should have an easy time here too," she spoke simply, looking to the Natu perched on her shoulder. A psychic type, she knew Hops could understand her, but the bird was a nervous type. She sent a couple images quick in a row, Close during their battle. Gwen couldn't help but grin at that. She shook her head. No, Close had earned a break after all the battling on Route 103. Especially since she needed him on top of his game come the gym.
"Today we're here to look for a sixth pokemon and get you trained up. The third gym -- Brawly's -- specializes in fighting types. You'll be important there," the previous night she'd done some research to make sure all the gym leaders were what they were a few years ago, and with the exception of a few changes it was the case, "Sure, maybe I should train Smiles, but she wouldn't do so well here."
All of this chatter was irrelevant though. The Natu had got the point awhile ago, and while she was shaky on Gwen's shoulder she was definitely ready for whatever popped out. After all, she was the natural predator for a lot of the pokemon in the woods. Bugs and Grass-types, nothing to a bird. Hopefully.

Casually on a morning crawl Wurmple appeared, having what he would assume to be the time of his life, he was nibbling on a leaf happy as a bug could be, but he stopped dead in his tracks when he spotted Natu resting on some trainer girls. All he could think of was being devoured by such a beast! He quickly crawled back a bit, and then used String Shot on a tree pulling itself towards Gwen and Natu.
The sudden appearance of the Wurmple caught both Gwen and Natu off guard. Still they were quick to respond. Hops narrowed her eyes, a heated Leer in response to the Wurmple's gutsy approach before she followed her namesake and hopped from Gwen's shoulder.
Leaping over the Wurmple's advance, she then attempted to dive bomb it as it fell, weak wings fluttering in a way meant to reduce the pain of impact with the ground. Her beak facing down, she wanted Peck the opposing bug type as she fell.
"Get ready!" Gwen called when the Natu landed, unsure of whether she had really hit the opponent or not. Already the battle had begun to get to the both of them, with Hops shuddering slightly and Gwen feeling the heat rise to her face as excitement mounted.
"Damn it! They saw the attack coming!" The Wurmple thought to himself as he fell to the ground and was pecked, he glared towards the Natu, no matter what, he was going to stand his ground, for all his fallen bretheren, for his family, for his kind, he will kill all birds. "Wuuuuuurm!" The Pokemon shouted charging towards Natu tacking it, and then tackling it again. "I must kill all birds!"
"On your toes Hops!" Gwen shouted to the Natu as the Wurmple approached. The bug was aggressive, that was for sure, but Hops was quick on her feet. The first tackle was dodged with ease, but the second one came so suddenly that she was unable to hop out of the way again. For a moment she stumbled, footing disrupted, but she was quick to dive forward at the red bug.
Two Peck attacks came in rapid succession, both aimed at the bug-types mid body. They were quick jabs, bruising blows that would hopefully leave the Wurmple too weak to resist capture. For the Natu had no intention of killing the Wurmple. After all it was fed perfectly fine, so any hunting of other pokemon would simply be a waste.
Pain, so much pain, these pecks were truly painful to Wurmple, he felt as if he was going to fall unconscious at any moment. He had to continue though, he had to continue fighting for those who can not fight for themselves! He lunged toward Natu twice more in hope to take the Pokemon down. "For bugmanity!"
Wurmple dodged one peck! Wurmple Tackle! Wurmple used Tackle!
The abuse from the Wurmple shook Hops, but she would not be defeated. Rather it filled her with a rare drive. What was this feeling? Bravery? Passion? Whatever it was it pushed her to face the Wurmple with something new. Darkness swelled around her as ghostly images swam across the ground. When Hops looked up to face the bug again her eyes were filled with ghastly wisdom and Night Shade reached out to incapacitate the Wurmple.
"There we go Hops, make sure it's still alive when you're done!" Gwen's voice rang in Hops's ears, reminding her to hold back and filling her with an even stronger desire to win. Gwen herself was proud of the Natu, she'd assumed it would be too scared to do much of anything, but instead it had persisted through the thick and thin of this fight against a stronger opponent.
"Still not enough? Well looks like this is the end of me." The Wurmple thought as it was hit with the Night Shade. "Goodbye cruel world. . ." The Pokemon whispered to itself as it flopped over onto its side, knocked out.
Wurmple fainted! Natu gained two levels! Capture and Continue?
Hops huffed and puffed as the Wurmple fell. A strange thrill filled the Natu, but she couldn't bask in the sensation -- instead forced to focus on the pain that racked her body. The fight had been rough, the tackles having left her bruised and seriously wounded by the end of it. A fact Gwen had picked up on and had just the fix for.
"You're such a good girl, that was a good fight!" She spoke kindly to the bird pokemon as she pulled a potion from her bag. Her last one. She sprayed Hops wounds with the bottle, fixing her up and then smoothing her feathers with delicate fingers. The Natu was grateful, affectionately pecking at her hands afterwards and flooding her mind with a variety of images indicating thanks. Alongside those images also came a great many letting her know just how proud she was of herself.
"Yes, you did a great job! Let's see what else we can find." She offered the Natu her shoulder again, and Hops climbed up and perched herself there once again. From there Gwen walked over to the fallen Wurmple. It had put up a good fight, and if she was lucky it would provide another strong member for her party. Pulling a pokeball from her belt, she then threw it onto the bug. The red capture light sucked it in before the ball itself wiggled in place. Soon it stopped moving and Gwen was able to place it on her belt. Nice.

Nearby watching the whole battle, a Paras crawled out of the shadows. It looked towards Gwen with hateful eyes, Who was this intruder? Why was she attacking his friends? Doesn't matter, she'll pay for what she did to Wurmple!
Paras appeared! Paras challenges Gwen to a battle!
The appearance of the Paras was immediately noticed by Hops. The Natu chirruped on Gwen's shoulder before locking eyes with the opponent. She was serious, ready to go toe to toe with this new opponent. Something about it seemed stronger than the last one, but she was confident that she could do it. So was Gwen. When Natu sent her a volley of thoughts Gwen just nodded. And then she had an idea.
You're a psychic type, how about we try something new, instead of speaking to Natu she thought towards her, and when Hops seemed interested Gwen simply grinned. This could be fun. Looking at the Paras, she mustered images of the last fight.
Gwen mustered images of the Peck attacks on the Wurmple, and Hops understood instantly. Jumping from her shoulder again, Natu once again tried to dive bomb this new opponent. Her beak shone in the light as she landed, swinging out with it twice.
Paras took the first hit like champ, then dodged the next one. It then started to shake the two mushrooms on it's back to release two different types of powders into the air. The first one would look like a purple mist slowly making it's way towards the Natu, the second one looked yellow bulbs that floated carelessly in the air.
Hops stayed up close and personal with the Paras, the pokemon hadn't done anything physically aggressive as of yet so she figured she had no reason to fear. This was of course false, as one wave of strange spores and then another was shaken off the Paras. Too close to avoid, it was time for a decision.
Go into the purple spores Hops, we'll fix you up later," and Hops did, she jumped even closer to the Paras, breathing in the purple spores and coughing for a moment as the poison started to take effect.
Shudders overtook Hops as pain surged in her chest. While it was unpleasant, Gwen was sure the poison was preferable over the paralyzing powder. At least when she was poisoned Hops could still fight.
Without missing a beat Hops hopped forward, now incredibly close to the Paras, and struck out with her beak once again. One, two, chirrup!
lv8 | female | synchronize | healthy peck, night shade, leer HOPS was POISONED STUN SPORE failed
Once again Paras took a peck and dodged the second one, it then took this chance to bring out its claws a slash at the bird. "For Bugmanity!" The Paras shrieked taking the first slash towards Natu, and then taking another one immediately afterwards.
Finally the Paras got aggressive. It brandished its claws and struck out at Hops, but the Natu was quick. Jump onto one foot and the first scratch missed, but then a hop into the air was too low, causing the second scratch to catch her on the legs. Confidence had made Hops more gutsy and quicker on her feet, but not that quick. Still she wouldn't falter, and went on the offensive.
Again the two Peck attacks came out, one after another, but this time they were followed by a wince. The poison burned in her chest and made her breath come short and fast. Gwen took note of it, she wasn't sure how long the Natu would want to fight with that running through her system. Already she was thumbing a Full Heal in her pocket.
