The ranger explains her role, lowering his expectations ever so slightly. He's been under the impression they simply sent the groups into the caves by themselves to explore, and perhaps in times past the system followed his assumed system. He figures the amount of casualties piling up through the years most likely changed the way the event was run from then on, he doesn'y vocalize these thoughts however content with following behind the woman quietly. He's been moving with 3 of the trainers he's met consistently throughout their journey, and for that he's grateful, however there's an unexpected fourth player traveling with the group of four leaving him with far less trust than he had normally, not to say he even trusts the former companions entirely, not yet at least.
A forced lazy smile is plastered on his face as he follows the woman into the cavern hands hidden deep within his pockets, it feels odd losing the extra weight on his shoulder, or atop his head, Sola hidden deep within he pokeball. He's gotten too attached to the pokemon and that scares him, the less he cared about the less he lost, he knows this however the beginning of his journey signaled a severe loss of his personal defense a number of people entering his life, that he knows he cares about if only vaguely. Thoughts of loss plague the man as he moves forward continuing to force this fake smile all the while.
He glances at the newest addition to his party somewhat cordial, "Nice to meet you friend, I go by Miles. I've met the rest of these guys on my journey so we're all already acquainted, care to give your name stranger?" A solid effort to be at least a little polite, it'd be out of the character he's made for himself if he wasn't.
oh so they had a tour guide? thank arceus. evan didn't mind traveling through the caves with the groups but he wasn't sure if he wanted to end up getting lost down there with them. he was horrible with directions and he wasn't too confident that the others in the group knew how to traverse the inner caves by themselves. but luck was on their side and they ended up with a woman who would lead them safely through.
he didn't expect to run into miles anytime soon but knew eventually he would. it was nice to know that he was in a group with people he knew. it made it more fun right? evan listened as the tour guide introduced herself and nodded at the instructions. don't get lost-- that was easier said than done for him. he wasn't going to wander off... it's just that he always ended up getting lost even when he was walking in a straight line.
"thanks for leading us." he greeted towards the ranger before turning his attention to the other's in his group. he listened as miles introduced himself to one of the few people he did not know in the group and waved in greeting.
"name's deanna. nice to meet you guys!" she chirps. this looks like a capable group. there are a couple people missing, but that's not a problem. she tilts her head to inside the cave, beckoning them forward.
the cave is cool and dank. they stop at the split path. both look equally daring, dim lights lining the sides of the cave. but the right is labelled 'B' while the left is labelled 'S'. deanna has no idea what that means. she turns towards the people for a group vote.
"time for a vote! B or S?"
THE GROUP ENCOUNTERS A split path! right or left?

[attr="class","mv"]
[attr="class","mv1"]before the group could introduce themselves, the tour guide was ready to go. evan turned his attention to the others before following inside. he made sure that his pokemon were on his body before actually moving, considering they had no idea where the hell they were going in here. who knew...they could come across some angry pokemon that had their territory invaded. his swablu was not strong enough to take care of the stronger pokemon that might be lurking in the cave but he had faith. he would just have to trust the tour guide.
there was light in the cave but evan was a little unnerved by the darkness. he wasn't some kid that was afraid of the dark; far from it. but there was always that lingering sensation within him every time he was near dark and closed spaces. he blamed his adventures in the last region they had been to on his sudden uneasiness towards situations like this. his hand reached up and fidled with the cap on his head, finding something to distract him while they walked in the caverns.
deanna stopped in front of a split path and both of them didn't look safer than the other. evan could only stare at the labels on the cave walls and wondered if this was part of the tour. they had to choose where they wanted to go? turning to the others, he looked at them before going back to stare at the signs. wouldn't it just be easier if the guide decided which was better to go down? "ummm...i choose b." he said after a moment, looking down the path. "not that you should listen to me. i have a horrible sense of direction and i get lost when going in a straight line. but if i had to choose, i guess b then." the tour guide probably knew where she was going so even if he did choose, they wouldn't get lost.
Footsteps echo as they move through the cave Deanna leads the way as he follows behind Evan around the end of the line. The ranger provides an option at the cross roads left or right B or S. Evan says B just as he speaks up 'S' In truth he doesn't really care, but he gets a strange vibe from B. He glances at Evan once shrugging before, smiling lazily, "I'll concede this time around lets hit B then?" He concedes if only not to hold up the group, opinons led to indecision, and indecision was something he had little time for. And so he moves beside the man now, "I don't think it's wise following the guy who admittedly gets himself lost all the time, but what's an adventure without a few wrong turns, right friend?" Before patting the man on the back, all the while waiting for the ranger to continue on.
“Wait for us!” Footsteps started to echo throughout the cave. Then, after a few moments, a dark-skinned male and a massive Gliscor arrived upon the scene. Basil skid to a halt, immediately taking a quick moment to catch his breath. While he did that, the eight foot tall Sinnoh Pokemon flared his wings and landed next to his trainer with a heavy thud. “Sorry for being late …” he muttered, hand rising to move the hair out of his face. He could’ve sworn that he had a few more minutes to get to the rendezvous point before the expedition started. Apparently, he was late. Great.
The good news was that he managed to arrive quickly enough to catch the ranger’s question. The bad news was that, judging from that inquiry alone, the tour guide had no idea where she was going. “Wait. B or S? What do you mean “B or S”?!” Basil sputtered, quickly looking to the other two males. “I think it is BS that she doesn’t know where she’s going!” Amused, Scar snickered, his laugh deep and strangely terrifying. Sighing, he looked towards Noah and Miles. “I guess I’ll go with whatever you two said.” That meant that was another vote for Path B. “Sorry for being late. I -- … Yeah. I’m Basil, in case we haven’t met and this is Scar.” With a hand, he loosely gestured towards the Gliscor for specificity; the introduction was for Evan since he and Basil hadn’t met before. “Well, hopefully this expedition will run smoothly without any issues.”
[attr="class","zv4"]O how he loves you, darling boy. O how, like always, he invents the monsters underneath the bed to get you to sleep next to him, chest to chest or chest to back, the covers drawn around you in an act of faith against the night.
he didn’t get why they were going into a cave; didn’t understand the appeal of going through some damp hole in the wall with a bunch of people. what were they even going to find in here? honestly the only thing noah could imagine were, at best some, pokemon. however the likelihood of that was slim and what he was expecting were rocks. so many fucking rocks. he says nothing when they arrived, following the crowd when their guide beckons them to approach the mouth -- and as they continue he just stares at the decreasing light of the sun. summer beach festival his ass. this isn’t his idea of fun -- nor does he believe this will amount to anything amazing -- however he follows, goes with what evan suggests because no matter how hard he tries he can’t say no.
“you didn’t miss shit, don’t worry.” he says, turning to look at their latest arrival and sidestepping a little further out of the way when his pokemon lands. his eyes narrow at the sight of the gliscor again, grimaces when it laughs at basils comments, before settling to look ahead at the choices laid out for them rather than the eight foot tall monster at their side. if basil was right and the guide had no idea where she was going then this would just confirm everything he thought about hoenn. “i could honestly care less where we go, so whichever is fine.” and he knows his comment isn’t necessary, that even if he were to choose the other option it’d be three against one.
“um. just so we’re clear -- you do know where you're taking us right?” he asks, eyeing the girl from where he stands. “i just want to be prepared if we get lost and end up having to eat each other to survive… or whatever.” he glances to the side, eyeing the gliscor again -- knowing that if that situation were to play out that thing would more then likely slaughter them in an instant.
[attr="class","zv3"]lvl 5 poochyena, dark (run away) tackle -- howl -- play rough nothing yet so everything is all good
deanna leads them deeper into the cave. evan is admittedly endearing, the way he suddenly takes back his choices. deanna laughs, waving it off with a flimsy hand. "don't worr--"
she's suddenly cut off at the sound of more steps. two more people come in. she grimaces at the joke that the new person makes, wearing a thin smile.
"of course, rangers swept through the cave beforehand to make sure." she says, "but you never know what we'll encounter." it's not as dangerous as say -- victory road."she says.
she leads them down path b. it's not long before they hear a distance roar. deanna curses as the lairon comes into view, splashing mud all over the group. she takes out a pokeball and a stylus just in case.
"take out your pokemon!"

[attr="class","sv3"] This is a candied world, and it spreads like fire. When it devours me I call the burning 'fun', but I never really was the purist one. Though I try to cleanse my soul with every sun. And I just get deeper in the same shit but doesn't everyone? Close my eyes and play along.
The group is making quick progress in the cave coming to a decision rather quickly going on Evan's hunch down path 'B'. The group walks for a couple of minutes small talk taking over having nothing really important to say he decides to stay silent enjoying the cave atmosphere, a number of other important thoughts and decisions taking focus. In truth he's a little disappointed Syndra wasn't in his group, but he couldn't really be clingy about it. What's done was done. There's also the matter of Elijah to worry about the calling card in his wallet, burning a hole in his pocket now. When the Lairon appears he isn't as much startled as he is annoyed mud getting all over his jeans.
"Take path B he says, it'll be fun he says." As the man walks forward covered in mud He looks at the Lairon casually sliding his pokedex out reading its level. Around the same level as his own pokemon it'd make for a good fight, but he doubted he'd be able to take it on alone. "Yo Basil help me out with this." He calls the other trainer forward as the Lairon roars at the group. "Remember the thing you did to Sola last battle. I need you do 'the thing'." As he gives Basil the affirmative the trainer calls out his own pokemon The flaming larva pokemon more than ready for a good fight. "I'll keep it still for you. If you two wanna help distract it by all means I wouldn't mind." He doesn't need their help entirely, but it would make it a little easier on the group if everyone were to join in. "Sola Hold it down, put all your focus into a double string shot." He's truly not too annoyed by the situation, but he gives the kinder red head a glance, "I think we can all agree you've lost your direction priledges for the rest of the cave man, sorry."
He turns to the rest of the group as Sola prepares her attack, sparing a look at Noah in particular. "That fair everyone? He shakes some of the mud off his clothes before turning back. The bug pokemon releasing a torrent of sticky white string at the pokemon in an attempt to keep it still.

[attr="class","nv3"] @errbody too late to switch to S?
[attr="class","mv"]
[attr="class","mv1"]when they had all decided on b, he wasn't expecting this. they had walked down the cavern and evan was less confident that their tour guide knew where she was going. she mentioned how the rangers had explored the caves beforehand so he wasn't all that worried. still, choosing a random path and not knowing what they were walking into was a little unnerving. evan glanced at the others in their party, noting the new arrival that had shown up late with a giant gliscor. evan's eyes widened at the sight of the pokemon. he was pretty sure they didn't grow that large but there were the exceptions of course.
"glad you guys caught up. you can call me evan." he waved towards the newcomers before turning his attention back to the path. he heard the others joke about how they had to choose a path and he glanced at the ceiling now unsure about the whole thing. "i call dibs on the arms." he laughed nervously. it had seemed like a fun thing to take part in but getting lost and attacked by wild pokemon wasn't that great. hopefully something would make up for it.
that something appeared in the form of an angry lairon who managed to throw mud all over them before getting ready to attack. evan quickly raised his arms to shield his face from the onslaught before lowering them to see what they were up against. the mud dripped down from his hair and onto his already dirty clothing. "well this is just great." deanna hurriedly told them to take out their pokemon. "wait what?" didn't rangers have some special pokemon or anything on them to take care of this?
evan glanced at the pokemon on his hand and knew they wouldn't be able to stand a chance against the lairon. evan glared over at miles at the mention of his horrible direction skills and turned to look at him. "well i didn't hear path s coming from anyone. its one against four right? you could have easily outvoted me." he told them from the beginning that he was bad with directions. it's not his fault they all agreed. opening the pokeball with a red light, his swablu snow flew out. "provide a distraction so the others can hit it. be careful alright?" swablu nodded and turned to her opponent, weaving around in a circle. she began with a growl at the lairon before going in to peck at it. it wouldn't do much but hopefully it would be long enough for anyone to come in.
[attr="class","zv4"]O how he loves you, darling boy. O how, like always, he invents the monsters underneath the bed to get you to sleep next to him, chest to chest or chest to back, the covers drawn around you in an act of faith against the night.
there’s something about all of this that doesn’t sit right with him. it’s upsetting really, in a way that twists his attitude and nerves until he’s glaring at everyone and everything around him. he can list a number of things they all could be doing besides walking head first into a cave, lead by some woman who will more than likely hear the brunt of his exhaustion. yet he keeps going, and when the mouth of the cave vanishes behind him he’s more upset at himself for getting talked into this mess again. these type of festivities just weren’t the same, neither were adventuring into dank caverns for fun -- especially not after what happened the last time he went out. getting trapped in see through mazes, nearly killed in snow and (lets not forget) the incident in the clocktower; they all happened because he had went out looking for trouble when he should have stayed back and minded his own business.
still, here he was, walking alongside an eight foot tall ticking time bomb of mass murder and its trainer; his best friend yet not exactly just that; some other little redhaired who got all deep looking at stars and lastly, the so called ranger guiding them to their death.
her words aren’t reassuring as they head down the path and when the mild silence is broken by a roar noah only glares at the womans direction. he’s about to speak, pauses only when the pokemon responsible for the noise comes into view, and shuts up entirely when the mud splashes against his clothing. obviously the rangers responsible for sweeping the cave did a horrible job. the woman calls for them to take out their pokemon, miles seems to already have some sort of plan -- and evan abides soon after. “this…. this fucking sucks.” he says, ignoring the situation at hand to look down at the mud dripping from him. “don’t you have something for this type of situation? or-- you know what, whatever. it doesn’t matter.”
when he looks back up he notices miles sparing him a glance, and he glares, muttering the words “don’t talk to me” under his breath before digging through his pocket. he tosses the device on the ground once he finds it, watches as the poochyena comes to view with more excitement than he can take to see. there’s not a second after she’s released that the canine takes off, running towards the lairon before pouncing at its side -- biting, clawing, doing everything it can -- despite it doing nothing. “i hate you.” he says, glaring at the dog ahead of them; and he means half of what he says. she doesn’t wait for anything, didn’t wait to be told to use howl rather than play rough.
[attr="class","zv3"]lvl 5 poochyena, dark (run away) tackle -- howl -- play rough poochyena used play rough!
deanna could easily use her stylus to calm the lairon, but the tour guides were told to refrain from action unless absolutely necessary. she doesn't want to disobey orders, and even though she has a batch of pokeballs in her belt it's obvious that it's not needed.
the group throws out pokemon of their own. lairon roars again, shaking itself off of the attacks. she swipes metal claws at the poochyena and headbutts the swablu.
she turns towards the trainers. "i'm only a guide, not a babysitter." she snaps, her patience wearing thin for the group that always seems to be heckling her.
tough crowd.

[attr="class","nv3"] @errbody gonna go ahead and post just in case...
[attr="class","mv"]
[attr="class","mv1"]evan watched the pokemon go at it, unsure whether this was the best plan they had. the lairon definitely looked stronger than their current pokemon...well maybe not the 8ft tall gliscor... he knew that his pokemon had to be careful because a hard hit from the lairon would hurt a lot. he heard the others start to complain about their current situation and sighed in response. even their tour guide was getting pissy with them. it was understandable since they were all currently covered in mud and taking jabs at each other like no tomorrow. on top of that, fighting an angry pokemon in a dark cave.
the swablu flapped her wings and tried to peck at steel type again, watching as it shook off their attacks and swooped in for a headbutt. trying to fly up into the air, she barely missed taking the attack full on but still managed to get sideswiped by the headbutt. she immediately flew to the side and caught herself before she hit the cave wall. she was hurt and she knew one more attack from the lairon would knock her out. weakly flying to the air again, she kept her distance this time and let out a loud growl in order to keep up her distraction.
knowing that his pokemon would not last much longer, evan turned to the others in the group to see what they planned to do next. "hey we're distracting but if you want us to keep distracting, we're going to need a heavy hit to take this thing out." evan then turned his attention specifically to noah, narrowing his eyes and giving him a knowing look. the look clearly said 'shut the hell up' and he knew noah would know what he was trying to say. the brunette was probably going to say something rude to the others and he did not want to deal with the aftermath of it. god forbid their tour guide decides to up and leave them.
He can't help but chuckle at the ranger's reaction, but it'd be bad if this continued on. Lest the ranger get angry enough and strand them in the cave because the team of theirs wouldn't stop mouthing off. The 'team' in this case being Noah for the most part.
Miles wasn't exactly raised in the kindest part of town, his household hadn't a lot of money and as such their living conditions reflected that. Having grown up in one of the slummier parts of Rustboro in what he'd not so affectionately term 'the hood'. In truth he isn't ungrateful for his upbringing he's actually quite the opposite. The hood taught him things he'd never learn anywhere else. Lessons including: how to blend and survive when the struggle was a bit too real for anyone else were very useful in the long term. However he'd also picked up some negative tendencies that only came to light on very rare occasions, and under very tense circumstances. A Lairon cutting through them like paper was more than tense enough to bring a certain side of himself to the table, A side that he typically tries to keep hidden under the proverbial floorboard.
A floorboard that was about to be overturned. He orders his pokemon on the offensive since Basil, was too in shock to really react at the moment. It happens he can't fault the man for that, or rather he couldn't right now. "Ember twice over!" Hopefully that would at least reel the steel pokemon back a bit giving them time to regroup. While the larva pokemon began it's attacks Miles finds himself halfway turning to Noah caught up in the moment entirely. "EY YO! Chill before the bitch decide to dip and this thing decides to wreck us." His arm motions at the ranger, I.E the 'bitch' in question, his hood tendencies coming to light at the worst possible time. He realizes what he's said just after the sentence leaves his mouth floored at his own stupidity, "I uh, didn't mean it. Sorry. You're cool it's just uh...Fuck." he swears again still more than disappointed in himself. He didn't really have the time to worry about it though seeing as the Lairon was still up and angry.
They were quite the team these four, quite the team indeed.
