Today was the day. Striding towards the Petalburg City gym with a plethora of confidence about him, Sylvester had all of his gear and pokeballs on his person. His backpack was fastened neatly to his back, his grey trench coat fluttering in the wind as Sylvester continued his brisk pace towards the gym.
'This is it...'
Heading inside, it was a lot less ornate than what he had initially expected. Proceeding into the large room, there were two stands...they read off the names of the trainers who had already defeated Norman, Petalburg City's gym leader. 'So Syndra beat me to it, huh? Figures...' While Sylvester looked up to her, he was beginning to have second guesses about that gesture, mostly due to the acts on her behalf at the summer gala in Slateport City.
"Come on out. I'm here to issue my challenge." The Combusken he had hatched and raised from a Torchic stood next to him, emanating confidence...
norman walks out into the gym. someone has entered. he's excited to see the prospective trainers earn their first badges. they are always either cocky, scared to death, or somewhere in between. sometimes both.
he grins at the person across the stage. "alright, welcome challenger." he throws out a pokeball. sentret rises from it's place, ready for a battle.

*Inhale* Sylvester eyed the gym leader as he entered the room, an aura of calm around Norman. He chose his first pokemon, a Sentret, and allowed Sylvester to have the first move in their battle. *Exhale*
'Alright.' His hands curled up into fists from the tension. "Flint?" His pokemon looked towards him and firmly nodded. "Open up with Double-Kick." No sooner than he spoke, and no later, the Combusken took off towards the opposition.
Once within optimal range, it pivoted on it's feet and made a rotation, lifting it's hind leg and performing a butterfly kick. Not a moment later, Sylvester called out once more. "Give it another one!" This time, the Combusken simply leaped forward and attempted a drop kick into the Sentret of Norman's.
norman blinked in surprise as the Combusken came forward, Combusken being a pretty strong pokemon compared to the actual gym pokemon.
"Dodge it!" Norman called out as Combusken came in for the first set of Double Kicks, Sentret barely able to duck out of the way. Only for the second Double Kick flurry to nail Sentret head on, sending the poor little pokemon flying backwards until it viciously slammed into the wall behind Norman.
Completely in shock at how far Sentret flew Norman would simply stand around for a moment before quietly returning Sentret, sending his next pokemon out already. That pokemon being a Litleo.
"Headbutt, go!" Norman bluntly blurted out to the Litleo, the pokemon responding with a nod. Only to then charge at the Combusken head first, planning to go for two headbutt attacks.

Sylvester was genuinely surprised the way Norman's Sentret was sent flying violently into the wall from his Combusken's attack. Watching as the gym leader swapped out towards his next pokemon, Sylvester did not show enough sympathy to allow them to land hits easily on his pokemon. "Dodge that first headbutt!" Dashing to the side, Flint escaped the first attack from the Litleo, only to be caught by the one that followed soon after.
However, Combusken did not wince. In fact, he seemed to take it well, grinning devilishly down towards the little cub who dared to hurt him. "Double-Kick, again!" Sylvester wasn't sure whether to hope for another easy victory, or for the Litleo to give a valiant effort towards defeating his Combusken. He simply watched and waited...
Blaze - Lv.19 - Mildy Injured Flint dodges Headbutt! (1/2 dodges left) Flint is hurt by Headbutt! (No flinch, rolled an 84 of 100, 1-30 being 30%) Flint uses Double-Kick! Flint uses Double-Kick!
Just like with the Sentret, Litleo went down, super easy. Even easier then the Sentret due to Combusken getting a bit stronger after defeating said Sentret. Litleo only being able to dodge the first Double Kicks, getting caught with the second just like Senret.
Litleo also flying backwards, crashing into the wall violently. It was no match at all for the much stronger Combusken, the Combusken even having a type advantage over Litleo on top of that. It seemed like most of Norman's pokemon were clearly out matched. Once she hit the wall Norman would turn around, returning Litleo to her pokeball.
With a grunt Norman would reach for his final pokeball, throwing it out, before his slakoth appeared in a flash of white light. Not bothering to waste any time the gym leader would call out "Slakoth, use Yawn, follow it up with Feint Attack!" Which the Slakoth did, letting out a nice big yawn to try to coerce Combusken into falling asleep. Only to then shoot forward at a surprisingly quick speed, going in for a Feint Attack!

Yet again, Flint the Combusken dealt with the problem pokemon in a more than swift manner. Sylvester began to feel bad for Norman, though the gym leader was adamant on proceeding onward with the battle. The discipline he portrayed with mere actions was inspiring for the up-and-coming trainer. As Norman switched pokemon, Sylvester and his Combusken readied themselves for what was soon to follow.
'Yawn, huh?' Sylvester did not like that sort of thing. "Dodge his yawn!" Flint did well to get out of the way, though was struck by the Slakoth when he thought he was doing oh so well. "Give this guy a taste of your Double-Kick too!" Flint would resume the battle, proceeding to strike with his legs out towards the Slakoth until he provided a victory.
Just like with the Litleo and with the Sentret before that Slakoth was able to avoid the first set of Double Kicks. Only to get hit with the second attack and sent flying. Slakoth however almost hit the wall, hitting the ground a few inches in front of it. Before managing to struggle back up to his feet.
Slakoth wouldn't go down that easy, this was Norman's strongest pokemon after all! Not that it was that much stronger, the Double Kick's still took a huge amount of health away from the Slakoth. It could almost be classified as a miracle!
After recovering and getting back up Slakoth would...flop onto the ground. Just being lazy and laying there, staring at the Combusken and it's trainer. Force to wait for the inevitable attack to finish it off thanks to its good old ability of Truant. Which stopped Slakoth from doing an action every other turn. He was just too lazy, couldn't be bothered with battling anymore. Why not just accept what was to come.

After Combusken made another bold display of his raw power, Sylvester was left speechless when the Slakoth had managed to survive...and yet did nothing to retaliate. 'Uhh...I guess he's just like that?' Even one of Sylvester's own pokemon was known to stay still during a battle, being Slowpoke. Though it was more out of the frustration of missing his attacks. 'Wouldn't be the first time it happened...'
"Flint...finish this one up." The Combusken looked back towards him, both pokemon and trainer giving one another a reassuring nod. The Combusken chased towards the Slakoth, and would unleash another series of powerful kicks until it knew there was no will to fight back left within the gym leader's pokemon. 'Come on, win this for me.'
Still too lazy. Slakoth wouldn't even bother to dodge this time, letting the double kick hit him head on, the first one already knocking him out. Only for the second set of double kick's to ad more insult to injury, sending the Slakoth flying back into the wall even more violently then the other pokemon. The already fainted pokemon hitting the wall and then flopping to the ground.
"Here, you clearly earned this.." Norman muttered out as he uncurled his fist, revealing a shining balance badge inside. Which he held out for Sylvester to come up to take. Planning to return the Slakoth and rush off to get his pokemon healed up once the challenger had left the gym.

Sylvester was surprised it had been this easy. Almost caught in disbelief, he was reluctant to step forward, though was too tempted by the sheen of the badge Norman presented to stay put. "Thanks...I didn't think I had come this far already." Perhaps Sylvester just had high expectations. That, or maybe Norman just didn't have a lot of time to train his pokemon. Whatever the case, he smiled at the gym leader before turning to his Combusken to show of the shiny badge.
"Looks like your hard work paid off, Flint." The Combusken let out a slight purr and smiled towards his trainer. He then proceeded to dance a little bit, before Sylvester decided to cut their celebration short. "Alright Flint, it's about time we got going." The bird stopped dancing and took on a more serious expression. "This is only the first badge from a total of eight...we still got a lot of work ahead of us."
With a subtle nod Flint seemed to understand, turning towards the exit as Sylvester followed just behind him. This was perhaps the greatest moment so far in Sylvester's trainer career, he just knew it. These were the days every trainer lived for. 'I feel as though now I can do anything I put my mind to...'
