With little energy left, the little Zubat fluttered towards Usa and landed in his arms. For a moment, before the battle continued, Usa held her tightly. This was a first for her and for him. For her, she had never felt his warm embrace. Up until now, it was always her who showed him affection. For him, this was the first time he willingly came close to a flying type Pokemon since the incident that occurred so long ago.
From his warmth and closeness, Zubat finally felt what she was hoping to feel -- that Usa had love and admiration for her. In this moment, she felt a calm rush of adrenalin that gave her the drive to continue. She pulled herself from his embrace and flashed a smile. In her usual way of entering a battle, she blew him a kiss and then returned to the battle field. This time, she would face a Bulbasaur.
Usa's eyes widened with excitement at the sight of Bulbasaur. This was amazing -- he had the chance to battle two Pokemon he had only seen pictures of. But, he knew that even thought Zubat had the type advantage, she was not far from fainting. The Bulbasaur, fresh and full of vitality, lunged at Zubat as it attempted to use tackle. At the sound of Usa's command, "dodge", the tiny bat swerved and dodged. Her trainer commanded her to use astonish, and that she did. Twice. But, her energy soon faded and she was no longer able to dodge the small grass type's assault. After the last tackle hit, she fell to the ground. Though she lost this round, the victory of the previous one kept her smiling. Her awareness of the battlefield slowly faded as memory of Usa's embrace lulled her into bliss.
Usa recalled his Zubat. A smile plastered on his face, Good job Dani, he said softly, you deserve a long rest. As he looked outward at the opposing side, he slowly brought his hand to his pocket. That was an awe inspiring battle, he yelled out at Kris. He pulled out the Pokeball of a Pokemon he had never used before. Let's see how you do in battle. Go, Mozart, he yelled as a bright light flashed and revealed a Mankey. Go forward and use leer! The little monkey complied with leer. Then follow up with covet! Mankey playfully moved towards the opposing Bulbasaur, and when it got closer, it raised its arms and brought it down in a flirtatious manner, like a hammer.

Luckily for them, they were able to get their attacks in before the zubat had time to retaliate. Kris released a relieved sigh on seeing her go down before she could get a hit on Detlev who, being much younger, would've taken quite a bit of damage. The bulbasaur felt a surge of energy and strength course his tiny body when his opponent fainted, his first taste of victory being sweet and filling him with even more enthusiasm for this battle. Detlev cantered around to his trainer, sliding out his vines and wiggling them about in excitement, while Usa chose his next pokémon.
"Yeah, you're not too bad at this," Kris told the other blonde honestly as he gave the bulbasaur's ears another affectionate rub. "Good job, Dettie, good boy. Time to get back out there now with a leech seed."
Detlev, however, faltered a little when he met the mankey's leer. His confidence flagged a small bit on seeing those piercing eyes glaring at him. The attack that followed up hurt him enough to release a little cry but the young bulbasaur managed to recover well after it. From the bulb planted on his back, he spat out some parasitic seeds towards the mankey. "Good, and now try whipping him with your vines, Detlev," encouraged his trainer after he threw the leeching seeds. Detlev crouched down a little lower, bracing himself, and sent his vines after the fighting pokémon.
Round two began with a bang. Mankey had managed to land both of his attacks, the combination of which seemed to do decent damage to Kris' Bulbasaur. It became all too clear, however, that the round would not be won easily. The feel of this matchup was much different from the one before. Usa was cautious of Seviper because of its raw power. But, Bulbasaur? Bulbasaur Usa feared because of its typing. It was no secret that grass types had a tendency to be more technical fighters. With all their support oriented grass moves, they were tough to take down. Add the poison typing of Bulbasaur and, well, you have yourself a deadly combination.
His fears were brought to life when Kris announced a move that Usa recognized. Leech Seed was definitely one of the more tricky grass support moves. Out of instinct, he yelled for Mankey to dodge it. Easy enough. The tiny monkey's natural quickness and agility allowed it to move out of the way of the leech seed, with little effort.
But, its quick movements were perhaps the Pokemon's downfall. The many flips and turns it did in an effort to dodge Bulbasaur's leech seed, led it straight into Bulbasaur's vine whip. The whip smacked the tiny monkey square in the face, sending him hurdling towards Usa's feet.
Perhaps that was Kris' plan the entire time. Usa didn't put it past him. After the first round, it was obvious that he wasn't dealing with an amateur battler.
Shake it off, he yelled, Retaliate with more Covet attacks. Mankey quickly picked himself up, shook off the pain that made almost his entire body go numb, and then lunged at the Bulbasaur in an attempt to unleash a fury of Covets.

Huh... Detlev's vine whip packed more of a punch than what his trainer had been expecting. He was mildly - and pleasantly - surprised. There'd be no need to use leech seed if he was able to get one or two more of those in. A proud smile began to stretch Kris' lips as the bulbasaur gave this battle his best shot, even managing to circumvent one of the mankey's incoming attacks before getting pummelled by the second.
"Alright, growl at him!" Kris called out to the small grass type who was hurriedly skittering out of the way of further damage. The young pokémon crouched down a little and gave a cutesy growl, one that'd hopefully endear his opponent enough that it'd take the edge off his attacks at least.
"Bulba!" Detlev continued to growl, eyeing his trainer with slight nervousness in his gaze as he awaited another move. "Saur!"
Kristmar gave it a moment before giving further instruction.
"Now follow it up with another vine whip; he's a quick one though so watch out." The mankey had already demonstrated the nimbleness in his movements when he'd evaded the parasitic seeds thrown his way. Kris could only watch, and hope, that that'd been a one-off. If he'd managed to avoid something as small as a shower of seeds, perhaps vines would be no harder than jumping rope. He resisted the temptation to give the small bulbasaur more encouragement and interrupt his concentration, so for now he watched - in tense silence - as Detlev lunged for the agile monkey with his grassy appendages once again.
Mankey staggered as he tried to shake off the after effects of Bulbasaur's vine whip. It was a heavy blow that had caused even his agile movements to slow down. The pig monkey scuffed and stomped in anger as he glared at his opponent, all the while thinking of how he could possibly get the Bulbasaur back for hitting him so hard. This too was what plagued Usa's thoughts. The damage from vine whip was obviously extensive. Mankey's swaying back and forth was proof of this. So, how could he possibly deal an equal amount of damage? More leer? No, this would give Bulbasaur the chance to fire off more vine whips...I have to keep on the offensive...Mankey's resilience is just not high enough. But, perhaps... He had an idea. If Mankey couldn't outright take the hits, then perhaps he could deflect them.
Usa braced himself for another round of attacks from Kris' Pokemon. But, with a strategy now in mind, he was far less stressed about how to appropriately respond. It wasn't long before Kris called for Bulbasaur to attack again. This time, the coordinator chose to use a different tactic. Growl. A move that Usa didn't see coming. Perhaps this was Kris' way of counteracting the leer used earlier. It was definitely a good strategy. One that caused Usa to smile in admiration of the coordinators choice of tactic.
The loud sound emanating from the tiny Bulbasaur caused even Usa to wince. The attack, caused Mankey to grab his ears, obviously taking effect. Good job covering your ears Mankey! Try to shake it off and brace yourself for the next attack. The pig monkey didn't have much time to brace himself. however. As soon as the growl ended, Bulbasaur launched another vine whip.
Usa's eyes lit up with anticipation. He leaned forward and yelled out for the Mankey to use an attack. But, this time, he ordered that the attack target the opponent's vine whip. Use your scratch attack to defend yourself, he yelled. Mankey complied, sending out a fury of scratches at the Bulbasaur's incoming vines.
One after another, Mankey's claws collided with the Bulbasaur's vines. At the end of the tiny grass-types attack, Mankey stood almost unmoved from where he was before the attack was launched. Use Covet once more, Mankey, Usa called out. The Pokemon quickly responded by dashing towards his opponent.

So rather than try dodging the move, the mankey ended up using a move of his own to deflect the majority of the damage Detlev's vines would deal. Kris huffed softly, mildly impressed, as he watched the two spar for a few moments; Detlev tried in earnest to make his blows land but found most of them blocked by the mankey's claws. He kept it up until he had to leap back and take a breather, unable to keep up the demanding speed the exchange forced out of him. He was made to retreat even further when Usa's pokémon just continued after the tiring bulbasaur but, this time, on the offensive.
Despite being not quite evenly levelled, the mankey was putting up a decent fight, which was something to appreciate.
"Get close with a tackle, Dettie," he called to the grass type who was beginning to show visible signs of weariness. "Get close and then use another vine whip!"
Detlev gave a quiet snarling growl, trying to hide his hesitance to get close enough to receive damage as well, but he obliged his trainer. After the blonde's order, he set off on his stubby legs and began charging towards the mankey. He aimed to slam into him, knock him off balance, at least, and give himself a window of opportunity to at least catch him even slightly with his vines in the case he tried to deflect them once more.
A jolt of energy surged through the little pig monkey after he successfully struck Bulbasaur with Covet. He began to prance around while beating his chest and using his tail to knock up dirt. The praises spouted from Usa in light of the Pokemon's performance only served to inflate his ego even more.
But, the round was far from won, and Kris wasted no time in responding to Mankey's attacks. Bulbasaur came rushing towards Mankey in a brilliant display of power. Usa's body tensed momentarily as he watched the tiny grass Pokemon make its way over. What now? Dodge? No. Monkey seemed happier when he faced the incoming attack head on. And, the scratch trick worked, so if it ain't broke...
Usa dug his heels into the ground and called out to Mankey: Meet Bulbasaur's attack with one of your own, Mankey! Use Covet! The little pig Pokemon lunged forward into a Covet attack with almost as much vigor as he had at the beginning of the round. He's amazing... Usa thought, as he watched battle with widened eyes that showed how excited he was. Zubat is tenacious, but you're gutsy!
Mankey collided with Bulbasaur. A loud boom echoed about as clouds of dust erupted around the two Pokemon. For a split second, it seemed as if the two were bound for a stalemate. But, Mankey quickly found himself being pushed back by the force of Bulbasaur's tackle. The effects of growl really came back to bite the little pig monkey in the butt.
As Mankey slid to a stop a few steps away from Bulbasaur, the Pokemon found himself the target of another round of the opponent's vine whip. Usa thought of using the same tactic from before. But, Mankey's attempt to counter the Bulbasaur's tackle seemed to have caused more damage than anticipated. Usa took the fact that Mankey remained still in his tracks as proof that he wouldn't last another round with the Bulbasaur's vine whip.
Get out of the way, Mankey! Dodge it, Usa yelled. With what little strength the Pokemon had left, he complied with his trainer's order. He jumped out of the way with not a second to spare. With one knee on the ground and the other used as a place for his elbow to rest, Mankey waited patiently while panting uncontrollably for Usa's next command.
Mankey, Use Covet... Usa's voice sounded every bit of his desperation.

the shadows are getting longer and we know no envy
What was this mankey made out of? This little guy was really turning out to be a considerable challenge for his bulbasaur. Maybe he should've tried to use leech seed again back at the start of this round because, man, it was dragging out longer than he'd honestly expected.
"C'mon, dodge that, Det," Kris instructed his young pokémon, warning him of the attack that was coming his way. Kris gritted his teeth together slightly, eyeing the tiring appearance his bulbasaur had. They had to finish this soon, surely. He waited for the grass type to outmaneuver the mankey's covet attack before giving him his next command. "Use vine whip! Get him and keep it up!" Don't give him an inch, Kris wanted to insist, don't give him a chance to escape.
The panting pokémon took a second to get some of his breath back to fill his dully burning lungs with some cool air. Growling quietly to himself, the bulbasaur's vines slid out once more from where they were mostly concealed under the bulb and leaves on his back. The dextrous creepers lunged for the mankey, trying to smack, whip and flick at him repeatedly, determined to make this opponent finally fall and not get back up.
With no more strength to dodge, the Bulasaur's vine whip was more than enough to knock the tiny monkey out of commission. You were truly fantastic, Mo... Usa said softly as he returned the Pokemon to his pokeball. He pressed the pokeball against his chest and then placed it in his jacket pocket.
A gentle smile grew on his face. He was proud of Mozart's performance. His gutsy nature truly shined bright. Usa's smile was quickly replaced by a sudden look of determination. I won't let the hard work of my Pokemon be in vein... He looked down at Leonidas, who had been patiently sitting by Usa's side for the entirety of the battle. You're up Leo. Give it your all... The dark-type gave a quick nod before jumping to his feet and on to the battlefield. Letting out a proud roar, he was ready for Usa's commands.
Use quick attack... Usa yelled. A fire in his eyes, and his fists tightly clenched, he watched as Absol launched himself like a rocket towards the Bulbasaur.

Detlev's second victory was very short-lived. No sooner had Usa sent out his third and final pokémon - absol - and ordered him to attack, his bulbasaur was finally down. The difference in their strength was great and the young grass type had the last bit of his energy literally knocked straight out of him after the absol's swift attack.
"Well done, Det," Kris sighed to the fainted pokémon, a morose smile on his lips, honestly impressed with how well the small creature had fared in this battle. A little rest would do the little guy good. After returning Detlev to the comfortable shelter of his pokéball, Kris turned his attention to absol he recognized from yesterday. He'd been wondering when Usa was going to use this guy. Although he'd just taught him fire blast yesterday... grass types were out of the question, just in case he decided to use this battle to practice that frightfully powerful move. Hmm... it'd been a while since Adelaide had gotten some exercise.
Kristmar released his third pokémon - a female ralts - onto the field and let a smirk twist his lips. He was sorry for Usa but he wasn't going to make this easy for him.
"Ready, Adelaide?" He asked the psychic type, hoisting his satchel, still containing the same charmander egg from yesterday, further up his shoulder. "Disarming voice and magical leaf!"
Starting off strong, the youthful ralts opened her mouth to let a haunting and inescapable melody pass her lips. Ethereal and melancholic, it was unnaturally loud despite her small frame. As she sang, the ralts threw her arms out in wide arcs, conjuring up what appeared to be leaves except that they were coloured in a myriad of colours. They floated there innocently for a moment before, suddenly, their edges sharpened and they all pointed at their target. Adelaide let her eerie tune carry the magical leaves to the absol, conducting both them and her lilting song with her gently moving arms.

Mozart's efforts paid off. Absol was able to take down Kris' Bulbasaur in one shot. Usa was overwhelmed by a proud feeling that slowly built up inside him. It was a feeling that made it impossible for him to not have a beaming smile.
The next Pokemon Kris called out to battle, was a fairy/psychic-type. A tiny Ralts. The fact that the Pokemon was a fairy type made Usa nervous. He knew from battles with Dmitri, that a fairy-type attack did tremendous amounts of damage to Absol, so he figured he should avoid fairy-type attacks all together.
After hearing Kris call out for his Pokemon to use a fairy-type move, Usa opted for a strategy of caution. He called out for Leonidas to dodge the attack. But, something was wrong. Despite the Absol's moving out of what seemed to be the path of the attack, he still took damage. Why? How come he still got hit? It took Usa some time to realize that the sound based nature of the attack made it so that dodging was not enough to escape damage. The fact that the second attack used by the tiny Pokemon changed direction with its every whim, didn't help matters at all. Both magical leaf and disarming voice collided with the dark-type, causing it to cry out in pain.
Very tricky strategy to deal with Absol's speed... Usa and his Pokemon were in trouble. Speed and the ability to dodge attacks were Absol's strong suit. But, Kris and his tiny Pokemon seemed prepared to handle that. For Abol to emerge victorious, then, Usa had to change his tactics. Attack, attack, attack. Continuing the same momentum as with Bulbasaur, he called out for the dark-type to attack. Use pursuit... Absol lunged at the tiny psychic-fairy... And then another, Usa continued. One after the other, Leonidas attacked his opponent with fury in his eyes.

This was Kris' first time battling an actual absol since it hadn't been until recently that he'd even seen one in person. As such, the blonde was ignorant to the considerable power behind their attacks. Surprise flitted across his face on seeing how, with one single move, Usa's pokémon almost left Adelaide out for the count. She struggled to get back up to her feet and looked visibly weakened. Just as well she'd evaded one, or else this round would've already been over.
"Disarming voice again, Adelaide!" Kris instructed for what it was worth, knowing full well that one more of those attacks would mean the end. And, again, the little psychic fairy began to loudly sing her ineludible and baleful melody.

Watching Leo get hit by both of the Ralt's attacks made Usa nervous. If he couldn't depend on Leonidas' speed, what could he do?
He gently bit his bottom lip as he contemplated what to do next. Nothing. Nothing came to mind. He stood frozen momentarily as another disarming voice caused Leo to shriek in pain. This was not good. The type advantage clearly belonged to Kris' Pokemon. And, if Leonidas was hit by another one of those attacks, the match would be over.
He listed all the attacks Leonidas knew. Pursuit, Quick Attack, Detect, Me First, Taunt and Fire Blast. None screamed useful to him. He could call for Leonidas to attack again, but how would that protect the dark-type from the Ralts' fairy-type attacks? Detect? That was a possibility. But, would the outcome be different from when Leo tried to dodge the attacks before? He wasn't sure, and this made him uncomfortable. After all, uncertainty was not his strong suit.
While he pondered, Kris commanded his Pokemon use another disarming voice. Usa body's stiffened. He had no choice. He closed his eyes and yelled for Leonidas to use Detect. He stood silently with his eyes closed for a moment, waiting to hear the same loud shrieks of pain from his Pokemon again. But, nothing. Why?
He quickly opened his eyes to see Leonidas unaffected by the Ralts' attack. Was it a miracle? No. Using detect, the Absol was not only able to maneuver himself out of the path of the impending attack, the light that surrounded his body protected him from the resonating sound.
A grin now plastered on his face, Usa called out for Leonidas to follow up with a pursuit.

the shadows are getting longer and we know no envy
Detect? That was a sneaky move that Kris hadn't counted on, but that was still alright; the absol was steadily getting whittled down and Adelaide wasn't finished yet. He hastily motioned for her to get out of the way when her opponent went in for the attack and he watched as she quite literally threw herself out of the absol's path. By now, the ralts' eerie singing had quietened down and Kris hurriedly thought what they could bring out next. Perhaps they could try finishing this with a bang?
"Adelaide!" He called out to her, getting the young female's attention. "Use your dazzling gleam!"
The petite pokémon nodded vigorously and turned back to her daunting foe. A creature as strong as an absol made for a difficult opponent and to think Kris had even souped him up with a recklessly powerful move too! It made the blonde wonder how the two absols he'd taught Fire Blast would manage if they were ever to be pitted against one another; it'd certainly make for an interesting battle.
Adelaide's small body began to emanate a subtle illuminescence as she stored enough power to execute her attacks. Without a hint of warning, the ralts released the fairy energy in two rapid bursts, one straight after the other. She staggered the slightest but otherwise remained firm on her feet, watching as the two glittering pulses raced towards Usa's absol.

ADELAIDE DODGED PURSUIT! ADELAIDE HAS NO MORE DODGES. ADELAIDE USED DAZZLING GLEAM! ADELAIDE USED DAZZLING GLEAM!
Dazzling Gleam? An even more powerful fairy-type attack? Usa could think of no way to make Absol escape the incoming attacks. Perhaps if he knew how use Detect right, but he never seemed to know when to use the attack in battle. Still, giving up was not his style. With everything he had, he yelled out for Absol to use detect again -- out of fear that Dazzling gleam might be another one of those unavoidable attacks. With all he had, Leo moved out of the way with grace and style. Alas, the second Dazzling gleam slammed into him knocking him down for the count. The battle was lost.
Usa looked upon his fainted Pokemon with disappointment. But, there was nothing he really could have done in the situation, and his Pokemon really did give it their all. He used that as his logic to cheer himself up. As he called Leonidas back into his pokeball for a rest, he flashed Kris a smile. You were a tough opponent.
Even though he remained smiling, tears started to fall down his cheek. He never took losing well...
