Just like most mornings, Calvin had got up early and snuck out the house to go to his usual spot at the forest near route 101. He had to get out of that house, it was always messy and noisy with his sister running around chasing their Mum's pokemon - Gothita. He breathed in the cold crisp air and knelt down, touching the grass. Wet. The little green blades of grass were completely covered in dew, this also meant that there would be more pokemon at the pond he visited. He couldn't wait to see what would be there today. He swerved round the corner of his house and went to go to the great oak tree. Not this morning however, he walked over to the entrance to route 101 and a boy was standing there with a pokemon (he was unsure what). He looked younger than Calvin, but had a look Calvin disliked... He was bound to be a snob.
Keeping his head down and his black hood up, Calvin quickly walked over to the grassy route and started to pass the boy. Unfortunately, he got stopped by him. It was always unusual to see a non-trainer head out into a dangerous area, but nobody seemed to understand that Calvin was quick and quiet. He had done this countless times and it just so happened that today would be the day someone found out. Upon being stopped by the boy, he tilted his head back, not even turning to face him completely, he scowled and shot a menacing look with his ghostly grey eyes before saying,"What's your problem kid?"
No problem at all... Usa's voice was stern and his glare was sharp. The stranger calling him a kid, immediately irritated him.
You know you can't venture out too far from the town without a Pokemon, right? Despite the age difference between himself and the stranger -- the stranger being obviously older -- Usa carried himself with an air of authority that only a senpai or boss would have. He gave the stranger a quick look over and then crossed his arms. Noticing no signs of a pokeball, he flashed the man a condescending smirk and then continued his lecture.
Do you even have a Pokemon, bro? He shifted the weight of his stance to his other leg to draw the stranger's attention to the Absol sitting beside him.
No Pokemon? Turn right back around... He made a spinning motion with his finger to emphasize that the stranger needed to go back the way he came.
Oh. And, for the record, I'm a ranger... He instinctively pushed his chest out as he spoke.
I'll let that 'kid' comment fly this time, but just remember that I'm no ordinary "kid"...
Calvin gave the kid a blank stare before swivelling around and putting his hand on his hip. He looked him up and down with disgust and didn't give him much attention at all. He held up his hand and started inspecting his fingernails, without even looking at Usa, he started talking to him, "Listen kiddo; first of all, you're like, what? Five? Second, don't call me bro." Calvin gave him a sincere sort of look and a patronising smile.
Calvin then started to pull out a cigarette and light it, watching it burn slightly before bringing it to his lips. He inhaled quickly and blew a puff of smoke in Usa's face. He looked at Usa as if he were a rock, nothing more, "Now, Mr.Ranger boy, I'm going to go through here OK? You're not going to stop me. Kapeesh?"
Calvin then stretched his arm out to ruffle the boy's blonde hair. Whether he succeeded or not, he did not care. He would then turn to face route 101 and attempt to walk away.
Five...? The very suggestion made Usa chuckle in a nonchalant manner. Sure. Let's go with me being five. But, I still don't see how that changes the fact that you're going back through whatever whole in the wall you came from...
Oh! Now he's just trying to piss me off on purpose...
It wasn't enough for the stranger that he blatantly disregard Usa's warning. No. He had to take things to another level by blowing his cigarette smoke in Usa's face. Complete and utter disrespect, the worst kind of offence in Usa's eyes.
Usa's glare intensified as the puff of smoke dissipated. His lips quivered out of anger as he mustered up a response. His hands tightly curled into fists, he retorted with an obviously fake smile: Cute. That was cute. You're childish attempt to piss me off is adorable... He relaxed his fist as he continued to speak: But, as a five year old, with a Pokemon, who just so happen to also be a ranger, I can't let you pass, good sir. He added extra emphases on the "good sir" to allude to his being sarcastic.
So, um...Are you going to turn around willingly? Or, should my Absol give you a hand?
Calvin raised an eyebrow at the boy, twirling his cigarette in his fingers and looking him up and down. He couldn't help but crack a smile when he noticed the boys lips quivering, "Awww, someone getting a bit stroppy hm? Maybe if you ask politely, I can take you back to your Mummy."He laughed again, tilting his head back.
After the boys little remark about him being 'good', Calvin held both his hands to his chest and gave him a sincere smile, "How touching, I'm truly flattered." He then pretended to wipe a tear from his eye, then went back to a harsh cold stare, no doubt to unnerve him at least a little bit.
He then tapped his chin and pouted slightly, over exaggerating his 'thinking face', "Lemme see... I can either go home, or just go to the place I go pretty much every day. Hmmm...."
Calvin shot another sharp stare at the boy before turning back around to walk to route 101. With his back turned and his coat flapping in the wind, he stuck his middle finger up at the boy as he walked, not even turning to look at him.
Is this person serious? Usa had done a pretty good job of keeping his cool. Sure, his facial expressions might have betrayed his genuine intent to protect the stranger from potential harm; and, sure he might have been a little harsh in the way he communicated; but, that was no excuse for the stranger to belittle his position as a ranger. It was no excuse for the stranger to show such blatant disrespect.
I followed procedure by explaining what the situation was. I told him it was dangerous to venture onto route 101 without a Pokemon. And, I explained that he had to turn back, as a result. All he needed to do was go back and get a Pokemon to accompany him. That's not so difficult, right?
This was, in fact, Usa's first attempt at reprimanding someone as an official ranger cadet. Though he was nervous, he mustered the courage to stop the stranger because he knew that it might keep the man safe.
Protect people and Pokemon, and uphold truth and justice. That is my ranger way...
Usa flashed his Absol a look. We can't let this person go any further. Dark pulse now please! His voice was cold, but direct. This prompted the Absol to act almost immediately. Jumping to his feet, the Absol howled as he let out an eerie storm of black waves from his mouth. The Pokemon knew that his trainer meant for no harm to come to the stranger, so he targeted a spot just before the man to prevent him from getting hurt, and also make sure that he could go no further, at least for the time being.
It's not gonna be that easy, buddy... Usa quickly walked to catch up to the man with his Absol following behind.
He was almost at the entrance until something stopped him. Turns out that snotty little brat had got his Absol to 'attack'. A dark wave of energy tore whizzed past him, hitting the ground in front of him and knocking him down on the ground. He had hit his head in the fall and the world started spinning, even the exposure to the dark pulse made his head feel a little dizzy. The attack had hit his legs, numbing them and causing light bruises - causing a moderate amount of pain up his leg. After a lot of cursing and shouting, he slowly got up to his feet, almost toppling over from the dizziness. The minute he tried to walk back into route 101, a sharp pain went shooting up his left leg, causing him to swear and flinch.
"Are you kidding me?! What kind of ranger are you?" he spat as he started to limp over to the boy, "I would have been fine without your 'help'! Loser."
He barged passed him, knocking him with his shoulder and walking back to his crappy little house. "You have no idea, you're absolutely clueless." mumbled Calvin, "you're gonna regret that kiddo. Man, you're gonna regret that."
Usa watched with a cold stare as the stranger picked himself up. The man being knocked to the ground was far from what he intended to happen. But it happened, and there was no point in him showing any remorse. No. Remorse, at this point, would probably be taken as a sign of weakness.
Casualties of war... That was what he told himself. That was how he justified his actions in his mind.
Had the stranger listened from the start, surely the situation wouldn't have escalated to this point, right? Perhaps his method was too harsh. But, it was for the man's own good.
Say what you must. I did my job by protecting you from yourself. That makes me an excellent ranger... As the man barged passed him, he turned to watch him leave.
Yeah, sure I might regret it, but I'll sleep well tonight knowing that I saved some big idiot from doing something reckless... After a small distance grew between them, Usa began following the man back into town. Saving him from himself was a ranger's duty. But, making sure that his wounds were looked after were ranger's duty as well.
Calvin scowled at the boys naive comment, "You caused unnecessary harm to a citizen, good job you 'excellent' ranger'."
He continued to walk to his house just a few blocks away, and realised the kid was following him. Without drawing attention, he tried to walk a bit faster (which was hard with the injured leg), he was almost home and the boy was catching up. He rolled his eyes and swerved around, face to face with him. "Seriously?! You've already attacked me and now you have the nerve to follow me? Go away! I dont need your 'help'."
He had his arms folded and his eyes narrowed down to intimidate the boy, this kid was so clingy! Why couldn't he just accept the fact Calvin didn't need help and leave him alone?! His nostrils flared as he waited for an answer, the morning was soon starting to run out and people were now leaving there homes. It wouldn't be long before his Mum would be wondering where he was.
Nonchalantly, Usa responded to the stranger's claim: Just for the record, I didn't attack you. I attack the ground in front of you...You were just too stupid to move out of the way...
Regardless of whether you want my help or not, it's my duty to give it without discrimination... He looked around to get a grasp of where they were. No Pokemon Centres in this area, if I remember correctly. I guess that means he's going home...
I suppose this is far enough... He gave a sarcastic smirk. I would ask for feedback on how my service was, but I'm sure you would give me no less that a 10/10. He gave the stranger a salute and then ran off in the direction of route 101. But, before disappearing into the distance, he stopped and yelled: By the way, in case you were wondering why it's so dangerous to go out on routes without Pokemon, it's because of Team Aqua and Team Magma. Don't know who they are? Look it up noob...
Without waiting for a response, he ran off into the distance with his Absol by his side.
