porygon was the first step into the world of artificial organisms. castform marks the second. silph co has managed to bring another creature alive but they're no longer satisfied with just sentience. no-- they have to be useful, to have purpose.
for young anastasia, she couldn't care less about her father's utilitarian views on quanitfying life. pokemon are our friends, she would insist, gloating at dear fernie-chan with a faux grin and her bright, wonderous eyes. daddy's little princess certain knows her way around the king. that type of manipulation is what brings her to hoenn, where she'll join the company of castform's observer. this "darby-chan" will observe castform's ability, behavior, and health in accordance to various enviroments the continent has to offer. certain a better alternative than letting those scientist get their hands on cloudy-kun.
hope and aspiration paints the perpetual expression of glee that colors her with a warm smile. the overly sized backpack nestled on her pack makes it seem as if she's proper for a camping trip rather than the journey set in front of her. what lies inside aren't supplies but rather a precious egg from ranne-chan. all that awaits is their destined rendezvous.
It had been awhile since Gwen invested time in her public studies. For years she'd frequently done research with the explicit intent of publishing papers and increasing her renown, but once Magma adopted her and made her brain their own she'd lost that desire to rise. By the time she'd gone nomadic the urge was gone entirely, replaced by a desire to further Magma's cause with her research. Research which, for obvious reasons, couldn't be published.
But this trip to see Birch had opened her eyes. This sudden drop in published papers, lectures, and public appearances seemed out of place. The professor himself had called it "odd", with a perplexed look on his face. She needed a new topic. Thankfully, a company overseas was perfectly happy to supply it -- alongside a sizable grant. And all she had to do was observe a little Castform and keep an eye on the trainer toting it about. It even tied into her recent studies on climate thanks to its odd abilities. She was about as close to excited as she'd been in years.
"Are you. . . Anastasia Silph?" She called out to a form in the distant, carrying what she considered to be a vastly over sized backpack. She herself was the owner of a much more modest shoulder bag, equipped with papers, pens, pokeballs, and any other this and that's she needed. From this bag she'd pulled out a letter, the contents of which caused the pause in her reading. The girl seemed to fit the description on the page, and she certainly looked every bit a highborn child. What with her wide, almost round eyes and the excessive packing.

"that's me!~"
anastasia blinks blankly at her would be retainer. the youth of her chirping response is lost upon a stern crow. gwen doesn't seem remotely close enough to being the vibrant pet set to appease anna's beck and call. of course the proposition hadn't entailed serving a more subservant role to the haughty heiress but anna was sure that daddy would've found someone fun for his darling little princess.
"and this is cloudy-kun."
a single wisp protrudes from over her right shoulder. the castform cannot be anymore timid, set to settle in the safe haven that is anna's hair. "he's a little shy," she giggles. a teasing readjustment of her backpack is enough to unsettle cloudy-kun enough to let out a small yelp. anna's amusement is apparent.
That chirruping voice was enough to make Gwen want to walk away right then and there. She'd never cared for Anastasia's type, young or old. Privileged, excessively cheery, and all together a guaranteed handful down the road. And that was when they had a bit of experience under their belts. Judging by her appearance and attitude Gwen couldn't help but assume this was one of her first times travelling alone. And of course it was up to Gwen to guide her, protect her, and somehow study the pokemon in her care. Already she could feel her head pounding.
Speaking of which, the Castform didn't look promising. The shy way it recoiled from the world -- whether that was natural or a result of Anastasia's pestering -- meant it likely wouldn't be doing too much interacting with, well, anything. This was no good. If it was scared of every bump and shadow how would they get it out into the environments it was supposed to be observed in? It seemed one thing after another was piling up, threatening her grant, her study, and questioning her decision to take a break from her work for Magma. At least that she was allowed to do alone.
"Dr. Darby, Darby, or Gwen." Her introduction was terse and to the point before she turned her attention to the Castform. After digging a bit in one of her bag's pockets her hand came out holding one, solitary cube. A PokeBlock, one of many made specially when she passed through Lilycove. She held it out to her subject, hoping to make it at least a bit more comfortable so that they could progress smoothly.
"And try to leave the subject, cloudy-kun, alone. I don't want your pestering to harm his ability to go through with any experiments I design," and then her eyes turned back to the girl, "And I want you staying close to me, especially since the subject is in your possession, not mine."

"dwhharbbbby-chan!~"
her enthusiasm is matched only by the twinkle in her eye. a new person meant another toy for her to lug around until she became brittle with wear and tear. papa may prefer a more straight forward approach in wrangling underlings into line but anastasia is just a girl. she's not in it for the thrill of the hunt. no, she prefers her own method of madness-- in the name of fun.
the presented pokeblock becomes the new fixation of her blank curiousity. admittedly, the kanto native isn't familiar with the unappeasing treat-- poffin being the more gourmet alternative. but anna isn't the only one to wait with bated breathe. cloudy-kun refuses to entertain the thought, remaining tuckered between loose strands until anna pushes her out with a roll of her shoulders.
reluctantly, it snatches the cube up inbetween its impossibly small lips. darby-chan is given only a modest look at the creature before it retreats again. instead, she'll have to settle for the growing pout fermenting on anna's face.
"what do you mean pester?!" a red rosiness flusters onto her cheeks as her brows furrow at the accusation. "cloudy-kun is my friend!!"
It had been Gwen's hope that the PokeBlock would function as a means to warm the pokemon up to her. She'd made it with care, blending sweet Pecha Berries with just a bit of bite on the part of a couple Aspear Berries. Still, it earned her only the most cursory of glances before the pokemon retreated again. It was her desperate hope that that this wouldn't become habit, this little thing constantly hiding behind Anastasia whenever the slightest threat presented itself. Especially when the girl seemed enough of one herself.
"There aren't many definitions of pester, so I guess I mean bug, annoy, upset," Gwen brushed her hands on her clothes as she straightened herself back to full height, wrinkling her brown sweater and cargo shorts as she did so, ""I mean this," at "this" she moved her shoulders, pantomiming the way Anastasia had spooked the pokemon earlier.
"That thing is already on the borderline of being too skittish to properly observe, I don't need you exacerbating the situation," as always Gwen was blunt when she spoke. She didn't believe in beating around the bush, of sparing feelings, and certainly not of obscuring the message she wanted to get across. If this was going to succeed in any small part Gwen was sure it would have to be at the hands of her leadership and guidance. Especially since, as things stood, the red-faced girl in front of her would be no asset.
"Enough talking, we should keep moving towards Olddale Town, it's not a far walk, but it's already afternoon and I'd rather not be out after dark tonight," her sentence was over for but a second before she moved onward, taking a step over a short rise in the ground and trudging forward towards the grass.

if anyone's doing the pestering it's darby. the exponential growth of anna's eyes are cheeks become a physical manifestation of her annoyance. anymore and darby will have a new research topic-- the supposed evolutionary link between pachirisu and man. "I DON'T ANNOY CLOUDY-KUN. HE'S MY FRIEND!" her tone proves detrimental to her cause. even she can feel the sprite cowering on her back. there's only one way to redeem herself.
"cloudy-kun," she whispers.
"show her the power of our FRIENDSHIP!" suddenly, ultimately, anna throws out an outstretched victory sign-- truly a symbol of peace. one that even brings the castform out and onto atop her arm. cheesy, yes, but it gets the point across. all that built up pettiness turns into a smug grin. at least cloudy-kun can remember basic tricks.
The little display was a surprise. Gwen was just trying to move things along, she hadn't expected the young woman to get so heated about her comments. Not that she shouldn't have expected it considering the girl had been pink in the face before she'd continued speaking the first time. Still, the little show that followed made for some hope. If the Castform could bring itself out when Anastasia called perhaps the extended observation wouldn't be so bad. Still, they were on a schedule.
"As adorable as that trick may be, like I said, the sun is setting," After her pause to watch Anastasia's little show she'd continued walking and didn't stop again, even as she gestured towards the orange tinted sky, "If it gets dark we could run into trouble out here, human or pokemon, and even if the night is peaceful as an Abra's nap we'll still be spending a night outside. Hard earth floor and all. I'd rather spend it in a Pokemon Center bed." Still she trudged on through the grass, looking behind her as she spoke.
"So again. Less talking, more walking." She even gestured with her fingers when she did it, bringing her left hand up so that its index and middle finger could take a couple steps across her upturned right palm.

"not adorable," anna mutters. "cute." there's a big difference after all. regardless, cloudy-kun finds himself regressing up his trainer's arm and back into his natural habitat: her hair. their combined efforts aren't enough to unturn their hapless caretaker. instead, they'll have to settle for a gradual change. eventually, darby will fall like the rest, succumbing to the power that is cuteness.
"and so, that marks the end of day one."
anastasia's self narration is kept to her self, audible to only the castform which wriggle behind her. a heavy heave brings her forward and onward they march. it doesn't take much for the princess to regret moving onward without her steed. darby makes up the first of many, but her other doggy should be here by now.
