This heat is draining the life out of me, I swear to Arceus.
Maya raised her water bottle over her shoulder, and offered Bartleby a sip. The Ralts had taken refuge in her backpack, but his subdued complaints continued to punctuate her progress along Route 101. Honest, Barty, this is nothing. I remember summers back in Pacifidlog, it felt like the air itself was baking and it'd get so bad you could hardly sleep at night.
Yes, but you could always just take a dip off the raft and cool down, Bartleby replied, in the psychic equivalent of a groan. Do you see any me-sized bodies of water in the vicinity? No? It's all right for you, you're used to it. I have delicate skin. I'll just burn right up.
Maya let him carry on, figuring that he'd tire himself out eventually. In the meantime, she didn't mind that much. If complaining helped Bartleby feel a little better, that was all right by her. However, there was something she needed to address. Barty, you know we're likely to run into wild Pokemon out here, right?
Silence, at first. Naturally.
Maya bit her lip. We may have to fight. Especially if we try and make a capture. And we're gonna have to, eventually. We can't go the distance with just the two of us. I know you've never been a battler, but...
It had turned out to be a pretty boring day for Barboach so far. all he did was lounge around in his pond the entire day. No trainers had walked by, no wild pokemon for him to fight. It was awful he hated it, Barboach wanted to fight something, anything, but yet nothing ever came around. Barboach would jump up out of the water for a moment in excitement as he saw Maya walk by, before coming back down and hitting the water with a loud splash. He had finally found an opponent! Wasting little time at all Barboach would swim over near the edge of his pond and start to smack up mud with his tail. Sending mud hopefully in front of the girl's path, trying to get her attention!

Maya managed to hop back just in time, narrowly avoiding the sudden jet of mud that had just erupted in the direction of her feet. Blinking curiously, she scanned her immediate surroundings, wondering where the mud had come from all of a sudden. Eventually, she spotted the little pool by the side of the path, with its tiny aquatic occupant bobbing insistantly near the edge. A smile illuminated her features at the site of the adorable creature. "Awww! It's so cute! What is it?"
Check that Pokedex thing the Professor gave us, suggested Bartleby.
"Oh. Right." Maya fished out the compact device and carefully activated it. The Pokedex uttered a few thoughtful beeps before finally delivering a short, digitized audio message:
Barboach, the Whiskers Pokemon. It probes muddy riverbeds with its two long whiskers. A slimy film protects its body.
"Gosh, this thing is useful," Maya remarked, slipping it back into her pocket. Walking to the edge of the pool, she knelt closer to the wild Pokemon, heedless of the risk of more mud getting flung at her. "Hiya, little Barboach! You wanna play?"
I believe her intention is to fight, Maya, Bartleby commented dryly. He barely had to exert his telepathic abilities to figure out what the Barboach wholeheartedly wanted right now.
"Ah." Maya looked troubled. Are you up for it?
When Bartleby eventually replied, the tone of his thoughtstream was firm and businesslike. She does not seem very intelligent. I'm sure I can handle her in a battle of wits. Bartleby wriggled free of Maya's backpack and clambered down to the ground, taking position by the edge of the pool. Maya thought that the Ralts looked uncharacteristically determined.
"Okay then." More than a little nervous, Maya retreated a few steps to give the two would-be combatants space. She hesitated for a moment. She'd never fielded Bartleby in a battle situation before, and she wasn't quite sure what he would be able to do, even against a young Pokemon like this. A quick consultation of the Pokedex, however, provided her with all the information she needed.
"Er... Bartleby, start by using Growl. Then try Confusion."
As you wish. Bartleby proceed to let out an endearingly cute growl, before hurling a weak pulse of telekinetic force at the Barboach. Maya watched on, wondering if the Barboach had more tricks up its... fins, other than mud attacks.
Once the growl attack happened Barboach would start flipping around in the water. Gloating to herself because all the Ralts did was growl, growl wouldn't do much Mud-Slap wasn't a physical attack. Unfortunately for the Barboach she would be a bit wrong on growl being the only thing Ralts did, getting hit head on with the Confusion attack while she was flip flopping about. Causing her to tumble under the water for a bit, so they wanted to fight back after all! Barboach would then hurry up and resurface, only to then smack up some more mud at the Ralts, two Mud-Slap attacks in total!

In spite of her misgivings, Maya couldn't restrain a cheer when Bartleby's attack landed successfuly on the staggered Barboach. "Good shot, Barty! You're a natural!"
The Ralts preened. See, I told you I could ha-- But he'd decided to gloat too early. The Barboach was on the offensive now, and its Mud-Slap hit Bartleby square in the face, knocking him back a pace or so and leaving him quite winded.
Maya gasped, and clapped both hands to her mouth. "Barty! Are you hurt?"
Bartleby groaned audibly, but managed to haul himself upright, blinking mud out of his eyes. Hardly. I'll be fine.
But Maya wasn't convinced. Urgently, she sent a thought in his direction. We can stop if you --
But Bartleby was having none of it. I can do this, Maya. Have faith in me. You need to stay focused on giving me instructions. You're part of this fight too.
...I can't say no, when you put it like that. Maya bit her lip, but did as her friend said, focusing her attention on the Barboach. The loach-like Pokemon was on the move again, preparing her a second assault. She's readying for another attack!
I know. Bartleby tensed, and managed to dodge to the side at the very last second. It was a clumsy sort of movement, hampered by the fact his vision was still clouded by mud, but it managed to keep him out of harm's way -- for the moment.
Maya pumped her fist in the air. "Good job! Now do another Confusion!"
On it. Though my aim may be off... Bartleby focused his mental powers once more, and sent another wave of force against the Barboach. He could only hope that she wouldn't have figured out how to avoid it yet.
Ouch! The next Confusion attack would hit head on once again, sending Barboach tumbling under the water this time as well. This time however Barboach would stay under the water for even longer, before jumping up and out of the pond! Landing on the ground near the Ralts. There really was no reason for her to do this, except for a bit of flair for her attack! As soon as she hit the ground Barboach would slam her tail into the ground, sending another mud-slap at Ralts, the force of her tail hitting the ground catapulting her back into the pond.

Luckily, Bartleby's reduced accuracy didn't prevent the psychic blow from landing a solid hit. This time, the force was strong enough to send the Barboach tumbling underwater. Maya let out a cheer. "Oh my gosh. Even I felt that one! Barty, you're amazing!"
But Barty wasn't as quick to celebrate this time. This is far from over.
Maya's expression came to reflect the serious tone of her partner's thought. She sure is taking her time down there. Her eyes widened when she spotted movement in the pool. Here she comes!
The Barboach launched herself clean out of the pool, right next to Bartleby, where with a single thrash of her tail she sent a second Mud-Slap smacking into his face. In spite of Maya's warning, the Ralts was unable to dodge this attack, and was knocked onto his back. Bruised and even more thoroughly crusted with mud, Bartleby nevertheless picked himself up again. Ugh... She's quite brave.
Are you --
I'm dealing with it. Just give me my instructions.
Maya nodded. As anxious as she felt watching her partner get hurt right on front of her, Bartleby's determination was starting to infect her. "She's weakened. One final push should do it." She took a deep breath. "Bartleby. Rapid-fire two Confusions!"
Bartleby obeyed without comment. The move was fast becoming repetitive, but what could he do? His feeble body was a liability in close quarters, and the power of his mind was the only effective weapon he possessed. Hopefully at least one of the attacks would land, and decide the outcome of this battle.
Just when it was actually important to dodge Barboach would go through with it! Managing to swim out of the way of the first confusion attack, only to still get hit with the second Confusion. Once again tumbling underneath the water from the impact. This time Barboach would stay under for even longer, before barely managing to drag herself up to the surface. She could barely keep going, but she had to! She wanted to win! With that in mind she'd fire off two consecutive Mud-Slap attacks.

Maya flinched as if she'd been struck herself when the first Mud-Slap crashed into Bartleby. The Ralts reeled on the spot, plainly feeling the weight of his bruises now. But when the Barboach launched the second part of its chain attack, Bartleby managed to dodge just in time, ducking down as the jet of mud soared clean over his helmeted head.
Maya found herself at a loss for words. For the third time, she began to ask if Bartleby was all right, but the question did in her throat. Anyone could see he was badly hurt. But there was something, something she couldn't entirely understand, burning in the air between the Ralts and the Barboach. Not quite enmity, not quite rivalry, but a bond of sorts, hammered out of the sheer determination of both combatants. Neither of them was willing to back down, and as much as Maya wanted to call an end to it all and minister to her poor brave companion, she had a feeling Bartleby would be deeply disappointed in her if she did.
Bartleby braced his knees, his thin chest heaving as he panted for breath. I'm still in this! Call it, Maya!
She gritted her teeth. "Bartleby... Finish this! Confusion!"
The last confusion was all it took to do Barboach in. The impact of the attack knocking Barboach right out, causing the fish pokemon to go 'belly up' in the water. Of course she wasn't dead or anything, just simply fainted and ready to be caught.
barboach fainted! barboach is available for capture!
Ralts gained two levels!
zubat♂ - level 004 - inner focus moveset: leech life
Zubat was a mischievous little pokemon. Well this one was at least. She loved nothing more then sneaking up on pokemon and scaring the crap out of them, or sneaking up on them to sap a bit of health out of them. Either one worked for him, and he had found a target this time. After Barboach had fainted Zubat would start to slowly fly down towards Ralts, moving very, very slowly to try to sneak up behind the psychic type.

Look at that, Bartleby murmured dazedly in Maya's mind. I won.
"You did!" Maya exclaimed, rushing over to cradle him in her arms. Her poor courageous Ralts was a mud-splattered, bruised mess, but at least he was still conscious. His opponent, the Barboach, couldn't say as much. She appeared to be floating upside down in the water, cleanly knocked out by Bartleby's final psychic assault.
Oh, yes. There was something else she had to do. Maya weighed the Pokeball carefully in her hand, and tossed it at the unconscious Barboach. All going well, the aquatic Pokemon should be securely captured.
"I'm so proud of you, Barty," she sniffled, gently wiping mud off the Ralts's face. "But I'm not sure if I can watch you go through that again." Without further ado, Maya retrieved a Potion from her backpack and began to apply it to Bartleby's bruises. The solution quickly took effect, and it wasn't long before Bartleby was restored to the full bloom of his health. In fact, somehow he seemed just a little bit stronger. Something had changed in his stance.
Don't worry about it too much, Maya, she heard him think. If I'd grown up in the wild, my life would have been even tougher than this. It was just my good luck to be raised as a human's companion up until now. It's nothing I can't handle. Besides, you might not have a choice. The Ralts nodded towards the sky. I think someone's decided I would make a pleasant snack.
Maya glanced sharply upwards. The Zubat hadn't accounted for the Ralts's pyshic sensibilities, and it didn't take long for Maya to spot it too. Quickly, she consulted the Pokedex. Barty had a type advantage on the new arrival, but still...
We could always run, she suggested.
No. Barty shook his head firmly. No, I can take this fellow down too. Besides, I want to test out how much stronger I've gotten after that last battle.
Bartleby grew to lvl 7! Bartleby learned Double Team!
zubat♂ - level 004 - inner focus moveset: leech life
Uh oh they figured him out. Well not that Zubat knew that, he couldn't hear their thoughts. But none the less he had no intention's on backing out, it was way too late. After Ralts was sprayed with the potion Zubat would head on in! Going to use one of his leech life attacks on the little Ralts.

Once it realized it had been spotted, the Zubat didn't waste time hanging around. Instead it swooped in for the kill, fangs poised to bite into the Ralts' pale skin. Bartleby was too slow this time. The Zubat landed a solid chomp on his right shoulder, lapped briefly at the wound, and then flitted off, screeching keenly.
Maya bit back a cry, but Bartleby sent a thought speeding her way before she could make another sound. It's all right. He didn't sound too phased. He can't do much damage to me this way. I believe it must be down to the move's typing. But it appears he takes some of the vitality he drains from me and adds it to his own. That could quickly get annoying.
The Ralts knitted his brows. So I'll try this! And so, without much fanfare, Bartleby attempted his first Double Team, conjuring an afterimage that would hopefully make him harder for the flightly Zubat to land a hit on.
"That's awesome, Barty!" Maya cheered. "You picked up a new move!" Taking advantage of the lull in the battle, she quickly sprinted over to grab the Pokeball containing the capture Barboach. Shaking off the muddy pond-water, she turned her attention back to the brewing battle. "At the risk of sounding repetitive... Go for Confusion! That ought to pack a punch now."
On it. This time, his opponent was considerably more susceptible to his psychic abilities, and Bartleby felt an exhilarating surge of confidence as he hurled yet another telekinetic wave at the Zubat.
zubat♂ - level 004 - inner focus moveset: leech life
Zubat would simply flutter around in the air as Ralts used double team, not really thinking too much of it. Now there were just more victims for him..or something...maybe they were real. Zubat had no idea honestly but would try to take down both of them! As soon as Ralts let off the confusion attack Zubat would dart upward and out of the way of the wave, dodging the attack! Only to then fly back in at the two Ralt's using a leech life on the after image one first, then getting disappointing and going to use leech life on the real Ralts.

Even though its attacks were clearly doing minimal damage, the Zubat kept coming. If anything, it seemed content enough to whittle away at its opponent's stamina, gradually sating its hunger at the same time. But when it swooped in for the second time, its teeth champed at empty air as it attempted to bite at Bartleby's afterimage.
The Ralts allowed himself a smug smile. Hah. He fell for a very simple trick --
But before he could complete the thought, the Zubat was honing in on him again, and this time it managed to successfully land a second bite on Bartleby's shoulder before flitting off again. The Ralts winced. Ow. Ow. I spoke too soon.
Maya watched the bat-like Pokemon warily as it wheeled through the air above their heads. Bartleby might have the type advantage, but the Zubat was much more evasive than the Barboach she'd captured had been. Even with his accuracy restored along with his health, Bartleby's chances of landing a hit on his opponent while the Zubat was airborne were looking pretty slim.
"Barty, you know the drill by now. Wait until he approaches again. Then fire off a double Confusion!"
The Ralts did exactly as he was instructed. He didn't make a move while the Zubat circled closer and closer, biding his time until the last possible moment.
