She supposed that she should be happy. It wasn't every day that people left Birch's lab with both their starter Pokemon and egg in tow. Granted, the whole egg business had been, well, exceedingly random and she would have two Pokemon to take care of instead before the end of the month, but this was an adventure, right? And adventures were fun!
Besides, how else was she going to learn how to be a breeder? Better now than never, right? And it was a Zorua egg which were exceedingly rare to begin with. If the baby was amazing, and Maria was sure that it'd be at least partly amazing, then she would be able to sell it for a good price.
The entire situation wasn't as bad as it might've seemed when Birch handed her her starting equipment. Actually, things had turned over in her favor, really.
So this will be your younger sibling when it hatches and you'll have to be a good big brother, okay Dante? Maria's voice was clear as a bell as she issued instructions to her Teddiursa whom was toddling along beside her. He had lagged behind a bit and was two to three steps behind her instead, one paw pressed against his lips which were wrapped around his thumb.
I don't know how many others got a Teddiursa to start with, but I think I'm quite lucky. You look to be in good health and I've heard that your species is very protective of their young. Is that true? The blond girl stopped and turned around, her sea green eyes landing on the bear who, in response, stopped and looked up at her.
He blinked, slightly confused, and shrugged his shoulders. Teddi. Ursa ursa.
Pursing her lips, the girl chuckled and shook her head. I'm going to take that reply as a yes. Good! I can't wait for you to help me with the other eggs that I'll get. She turned and started moving again, the egg held against her chest in both hands, her gym shoes kicking up tiny clouds of dirt as she moved.
The rattata was scurrying along the road, kicking up enough dust to practically hide its entire body with just its little paws. It was running at top speed for a rattata, which would have been hard to spot if not for the dust that practically announced her presence. She was scurrying home because she heard that mommy had got the pack some yummy cheese, and she hadn't eaten all day. Unfortunately her scurrying led her to run straight into a human, and then jump back in awe. The impact had forced her eyes closed, and she was too scared to open them! What if she saw the human again? Mommy said if you looked into a human's eyes, you would be cursed with bad luck and not find food for a week. So she ended up scurrying blindly in circles in front of the human, unable to do much about her situation.
She was unable to hide the surprise from her face as the Rattata slammed into her shins. Maria even let out a small gasp and gripped the egg in her arms tighter to her chest. She thought she was about to enter her first pokemon battle ever, but the poor little thing starting doing donuts in front of her instead. Uh, was that how pokemon battles went? She was pretty sure it wasn't.
Glancing at Dante didn't help things. He was peeking from behind Maria's calf, one hand touching his mouth and sucking on his finger. A tiny sigh escaped her control and she gently shook her head back and forth, trying not to be too displeased at him. He was a baby, after all, and hadn't seen anything outside of Birch's lab much like Maria hadn't seen much outside of Littleroot town. This was a big step for both of them.
Do you think you can calm her down? Maria asked, causing the teddibear pokemon to turn his brown eyes up toward her face. His head tilted questioningly to the side and Maria's look immediately became somewhat sour.
It shouldn't be that hard, she murmured, moving a step backwards and sliding her foot against his back before pushing him lightly forward. She hefted the egg within her arms up to get a more comfortable grip on it.
Tell it that we won't hurt her. That we're just on the way to the next town. I don't have any food, or I'd give her some, but we don't have to battle if she doesn't want to. She paused, pursing her lips at her starter pokemon. Am I going too fast?
Dante smacked his lips, shook his head, and toddled forward to deliver the message.
The rat did not believe the teddy bear, not a single bit. But that didn't mean it wasn't curious. And her mother had always told her about how "curiosity killed the rat" but she wasn't a rat, she was a rattata. Whatever did a rat mean, anyway. The rattata yipped at the pokemon, asking it many things in hyper paced pokemon. Where do you come from, where are you going, what kind of food is there, how can you trust that human!?She deamnded to know the answers, because her mother would never give her any.
Poor Dante was quickly overwhelmed by the screeching questions coming from the wild Rattata. The message that his trained had wanted him to deliver, he had, but he wasn't expecting there to be more questions after those ones. His brown eyes wrinkled at the corners and he winced openly. He wasn't one made for questions and answers. Still, he wasn't rude and all questions needed answers...he supposed.
I, uh, well, I came from the lab. It was the simplest answer, really. He didn't know his mother or father and his earliest memories included being cuddled within the arms of some woman and being bottle fed. This woman didn't look or smell like him so instinct alone said she wasn't his actual mother...or even part of his species, really.
The lab is that way. He turned around and pointed down the road he and Maria had been walking. The girl, interested, pivoted and looked behind her before turning back around and arching a slender brow. There was nothing behind them. Just what in the world was her starter telling the rattata.
We, he gestured to himself and Maria and the egg, are going that way. He gestured behind the Rattata. He didn't actually know what was at the end of 'that way' only that it was the way in which they were walking. Good food is there, I guess, because there are humans there and they always have good food. And she seems nice enough. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with her, at least. And she wants to hatch eggs, so that means she's good, right?
Lab? Oh so like a lab rattata! She knew it! THese human were-- wait, they were headed towards food? Good food did always seem to follow its human maker wherever it went, so the wild pokemon could not deny the truth of that statement. To be truthful the rattata was already sold. But it wanted to seem like it wasn't. So it quickly ran forward towards the human and sniffed furiously at her feet, and then quickly squeaked very loudly, demanding that she was to be picked up.
Maria was very factual with her words, her brow creasing a bit as she made this information known. She didn't know what the young Rattata wanted with her, but from the sniffing and the sudden squeak, she could only hope that it was something good. At least it wasn't attacking yet, right?
Seagreen eyes flickered to Dante who, upon sensing his Mistress's gaze, blinked up at her and removed his finger from his mouth. He stretched his arms up to her like a toddler asking an adult to pick them up and cuddle them. To this, the girl frowned and gently shook her head, her gaze wavering from him to the rat and back again.
Just how, exactly, am I to carry you, Dante, and the egg?
He pointed to the Rat and extended his arms again, still pantomiming.
Understanding, Maria turned her attention to the smallest creature in her vicinity.
I apologize little one, but I do not think it safe for me to carry both you and the Egg when I have barely enough arm length for just the egg. However, if you would like, I could place you within a pokeball and you can ride with me that way. Does that sound agreeable?
She wouldn't be picked up? No, no, no. Not fair at all. The rattata squeaked in annoyance, and then instead of agreeing with the girl to go in a pokeball (who needed those?) it jumped up and began crawling across her leg. Rattata were pretty light so it would be alright, she supposed. She scaled the large human until she was at her shoulder, and then she squeaked into her ear with joy. It was amazing. Seeing the world from a humans shoulder! The rattata hopped off yet again, landing on the ground in front od Maria. It nodded her head. Sh'ed go with the trainer, towards good food and even better adventures!
The young breeder couldn't help but arch an eyebrow at the Rattata antics. It was pretty smart, if a little painful, scrambling up Maria's leg and taking perch upon her shoulder. Perhaps she was too tall or the Rattata didn't like the view for she quickly jumped down. Still, when she glanced at Dante for confirmation or not, he nodded and gave her a thumbs up.
Well, she had her second, er, third, pokemon!
Welcome to the team Rattata. Forgive me if I don't bestow a nickname on you right away. I would like to find something that speaks to your character. A tender smile crossed her lips, her gaze lifting from the small purple mouse to the road ahead of her. She didn't know how far she was from the next town or city, but she figured it was still quite some time before she would reach it.
Maybe if she swiftly walked, she could reach it by night? Doubtful, but it was a possibility.
Hefting the egg up so that it was more comfortable in the crook of her arms, she started forward. Come now you two, she murmured, a small smile crossing her lips. We do have places to be, you know.
So what if he was a baby? Everyone called him that. Stupid, stupid people. He hated them all. They'd never understand. He was so sick of it. He was brave right? Super brave! In his dreams he definitely was. He was strong and smart and bold. Whismur kept smiling at his fantasies until a sudden shadow came over him, and he saw a human nearly step on him by mistake. Immediately, he started wailing, making quite the uproar and screaming and throwing his hands about. So much for bravery.
whismurr used uproar! (1/3) random pokemon hit: rattata! (rolled 2)
