There was a single tree positioned outside the door that exited Professor Birches' lab. A young trainer by the name of Harmin Undor was positioned in the tree, eagerly waiting for another new trainer to exit the lab with their first pokemon.
Harmin had wanted to flex the capabilities of the Staryu that he had just received from Professor Birch. The old professor had told him that Staryu was quite a powerful pokemon, and that one day it would evolve into Starmie and become even stronger.
Excited by that fact, Harmin patiently remained positioned in the tree that overlooked the lab door. As time ticked on, the red door finally opened and out popped a new trainer much like himself.
Immediately, Harmin leaped off from the tree branch and landed on the floor outside the pokemon lab. "I hope you got a good pokemon because now we're going to battle! Staryu, let's go."
Once the Staryu appeared at his front, Harmin finally got up from his crouched position to take a closer look at the trainer that stood in front of him. He remained eager as to what the outcome of the battle would be, and whether or not he would win.
Oops, he'd nearly forgotten his own Pokedex! Couldn't start a journey without those. So he'd made his way back to the lab, taken the items and decided to exit from the door. Since the last time he had tried to get out through the windows, some guys had called him out as a thief, so maybe he'd have better luck through the door this time.
"WOAH! CALM DOWN, ARCEUS YOU ALMOST GAVE ME A HEART ATTACK!!" He exclaimed, clutching his chest as he stared at Harmin like he was a maniac. Who jumps out of trees and asks for a battle, jeez. He shrugs all the same, once his heart calmed down. A battle didn't sound too bad, and maybe he could get back at the damn jump scarer for getting him good. "Battle, yeah, OKAY! YOU'RE ON." He says, getting himself pumped for the battle. He only really had one pokemon, but that was fine.
"Go Mint! Show em what ya got."
A Larvitar pops out, fresh from a nap, looking around until the pokemon finally spots the Staryu. Mint grins, as he seizes up his opponent. "Alrighty, dust it up and go for a chomp!" The Larvitar summons up a sandstorm, small and confined, considering Mint wasn't really strong enough for a larger sandstorm but this would serve for now. Mint then charges in for a bite.
Harmin laughed briefly as the man was taken rather aback from his extravagant entrance. The man's gasps were soon conquered by his enthusiasm to respond to Harmin's request for a battle. Perfect, he thought, this was the perfect chance to flex his muscles.
Out from the opponent's pokeball came a young green dinosaur-looking pokemon. It was a Larvitar and in all circumstances other than this one, Staryu would have the leading edge. The water-type pokemon could use moves that would knock this Larvitar out in one go. Unfortunately for both Harmin and his Staryu however the little star was yet to have learned a water-type move.
As such, Harmin would continue on in his crusade to level up his young pokemon. Sand began to kick up around the terrain, generated by the little dinosaur. As Harmin attempted to squint through the sand, he noticed the little green thing edging directly toward his Staryu.
"Staryu, use harden," he said quickly as the bite connected with his pokemon. Shaking off the hit, the young star pokemon's red gem began to glow along with its outer shell. Its defences began to rise, lowering the chance that the next bite from the Larvitar would be as effective as the last.
The thing was obviously a water type, but Azel couldn't be too sure about it. "That's a water type, right?" He asks over the storm, grinning over to Harmin. There wasn't anything bad about asking, right?
The sandstorm would do it's thing, providing a little bit of back up for Mint as he could move much more freely than the other pokemon in this condition. Azel could hear the orders. Harden, huh? Hehe, naughty. The brunette grins, before covering his mouth as the sand kicked up. "G'job Mint! You got him good." He praises, watching the Larvitar's back through the storm.
"Alright, go go go! Give em another good chomping!" Azel hoots, raising his fist in the air. Mint goes fumbling over again, tiny legs only doing so much, which is fine, his eyes a lot more used to the hostile sand than the Staryu was. Already the ground was getting a lot grimier with all the dust flying around. Mint does a little leap, before attempting to latch himself onto Staryu again to deliver even more bites.
Harmin's right eye winced at the comment regarding his pokemon's elemental affinity. Of course Staryu was a water-type pokemon. "It's a bloody starfish for heaven's sake," the blonde trainer mocked as the little dinosaur began to make another move.
"You should be able to handle this one Staryu," Harmin mumbled confidently to his star-shaped pokemon. The hardened shell of Staryu would allow for it to easily take the bite attacks from the opposing Larvitar.
However, Harmin noted something rather peculiar as the battle began to tick on. The sand terrain that the young dinosaur had created was affecting Staryu as each second passed. He could tell that the storm was inflicting minor damage and that Staryu was feeling rather uncomfortable. As the green dinosaur edged closer once again, Harmin began to call out orders in response.
"Use Harden once more. Follow that up with Pain Split," he announced rather loudly to the brown star. Upon taking the hit from the Larvitar, Staryu spun its body around momentarily as it began to harden its outer shell once again. After that, the red gem in the centre of the Staryu's body began to glow as it began to inflict the effects of Pain Split on the opponent.
"Well someone's mad. Is it because you're gonna lose?~" He teases, laughing at the man's tone. This was suppose to be a friendly battle, Harmin was taking it waaay too seriously.
But Azel startles as the two pokemon glow for a bit, and then Mint visibly flinches from the attack. Azel's not sure what just happened, even with the yell of Pain Split from Harmin. "You okay Minty?" He calls out, worried for his newly attained Pokemon. The rock type nods, gritting his teeth and leering at the Staryu's gem. The thing was getting tougher and tougher, soon he wouldn't be able to do much to the Staryu's hard surface.
"What do you think Mint, since our opponents playing coward, I don't even know if we should fight him anymore." Azel obviously mocks. "Finish that starfish off, don't let em get any harder." HAHAHA, GOOD JOKE, SUPER MATURE. Azel grins as he watches Mint scurry over again, the sandstorm was no doubt chipping the Staryu's health little by little, but the hardens would take a chunk off the damage that Mint was putting out. Still, the Larvitar dutifully goes in for another bite.
Harmin was toying with his opponent. It was unlikely that he was going to win this fight without his Staryu knowing any water-type moves. The only thing he could do was wear the opponent down with Pain Split but even that was somewhat a waste of time. After all, Pain Split could not render a pokemon faint.
He could tell that the sandstorm that surrounded the battlefield as well as the continuous bites from the Larvitar were wearing his Staryu down continuously. There was not much more that his pokemon could take before it would fall against the little green dinosaur.
Coward? Harmin was simply playing the game of pokemon battling. It was not his fault that he could not do much against this Larvitar.
After the man finished manically talking to himself, Harmin began to speak out once again. "You seem to have a few screws loose mane," he said jokingly before instructing his Staryu once more.
"Staryu use Tackle!"
He knew the move was not effective against the Larvitar but there was nothing more that he could do. He hoped that he and Staryu would learn from this experience, progressing in skill and strategy in regard to battling.
In response, the tired Staryu edged foward attempting to lay a few hits into Larvitar before it met its ultimate demise.
"FINALLY HE ATTACKS!! Alright Mint! Don't let that starfish get loose, unleash the fuuuryy" He yells with enthusiasm. The sandstorm would die out soon, but it was doing it's job, preventing sight, being a general distraction until Mint could move himself into a better position. He was definitely slower than the Staryu, but for how that was possible was beyond Azel. The tackle would force the Staryu to draw in close, to hit Mint with its body of course. Azel knew that his little buddy was made of stone, and could take a beating better than most but even he knew that Mint could only take so much.
He was still wary that the earlier attack would go through again. Pain Split? What the heck was that? But there wasn't much point in thinking about it. No, it was better to just keep attacking, out damage the starfish the best way Mint could. With brute force!
Mint moved with the Staryu, allowing the first tackle to hit, before side-stepping the second. He then lunges to take ahold of the Staryu, but even without hooking the Staryu into place he launched himself into another frenzy of bites.
Harmin could easily tell that his attacks were of little use in attempting to render the Larvitar unconscious. He just had nothing in his arsenal that could strike the green dinosaur on a super-effective level. Anything he attempted to do now was hopeless, but he knew that he and his Staryu would grow from this experience.
The blonde pokemon trainer watched intently as the Larvitar drew close to deliver its final strike. It could easily move through the sand stream that continued to float around them, surpassing the manoeuvrability of Harmin's Staryu that struggled in the storm.
The Larvitar moved in, delivering two final bites to the wounded Staryu. It was the last hit that it could take, falling back into the sand after the bites connected.
Harmin could not help but laugh at the situation. "Damn," he cursed out aloud rather joyfully, raising the pokeball that contained his Staryu to return it to its place of slumber. "Nice one."
He slipped the pokeball into his bag, walking over to the other trainer as the sandstorm began to finally die down. "I'm Harmin by the way. Also, I'm sorry for scaring you like that before. No one was keen to battle me so I thought that was the second best option."
Harmin stood there in silence with his right-hand out, attempting to the shake the man's hand in order to congratulate him on his win and become acquainted with him.
Azel wasn't too sure about what the Staryu could do, but certainly it could have done more than use its only effective move once and then try to his Mint like that. Of course, part of the advantage has already been slated towards him, a rock type was difficult to deal with without the proper attacks. He would have wanted to taunt the man more for his battle style, but frankly, he was a little afraid of the man, the earlier fright still on his mind.
The battle ends and the sandstorm dies, his clothes dirty from the dirt but he meets Harmin in the middle of the field all the same, grinning as he slaps his hand over the man's in a hazardous handshake. "Azel." He introduces himself, laughing nervously at Harmin's words. "Yeah well, I didn't think there were any ninjas around, mighta really gotten a heart attack though. It's alright though, I just think you've shaved off a couple years of my life is all."
Mint hustles over, only for Azel to return him into his pokeball. "So uhm, that really was a water type right?"
The guy seemed rather nice. It was good that he didn't gloat over his victory, otherwise Harmin had his left hand formed in the shape of a fist and was ready to go.
Releasing the tension in his right hand, and left hand, he stepped back from the man and held out the pokeball containing his Staryu. "Yeah, it is a water type and normally it would have easily defeated a rock type pokemon like your Larvitar." The blonde haired trainer paused momentarily before continuing. "Unfortunately, the young Staryu hasn't learned any water-type moves just yet haha."
Harmin returned the pokeball to his backpack, laughing off the battle that the pair had just experienced.
"Thanks for that," he finished before turning his heel to the man and strolling off toward route 101. Before he was out of the man's sight, he called back a quick statement whilst waving his right hand.
"Hopefully I'll see you again and we can try this out once more. Maybe my Staryu will learn some water moves by then."
