Benji didn't have much tips for fighting the paparazzi. "A mask and shades are more than enough, really. Wearing sunglasses at night would be stupid, though." He warily kept his eyes towards the bushes, as though they really would burst out from hiding from the bushes. "Pokemon don't usually attack unless provoked, though." As long as they stayed out of the tall grass, stuck to the beaten path formed from humans constantly walking along the same route, Pokemon were only really likely to jump from the bushes. Benji tried to keep his distance from both sides.
Nincada sang through the night and Benji found himself enjoying the cool night air. It wasn't as cold as from the treetops, but in a tropical region like Hoenn, you took whatever cold you could get. He stayed silent. He had never been good at conversation, so it was up to Mel to carry most of it.
"Hmm," he let out a contemplative hum as he considered the large variety. With migration and trading, Hoenn was even more diverse than before. "Maybe Swablu. They had quite a few in the gym. Good temperament and they take good care of themselves. They sing beautifully, too." He was feeling oddly chatty again. Talking about Flying-types was always welcomed topics of conversation. He had asked for a flying-type from Birch - a Hoothoot was alright, though. He had yet to have a real opinion about his in the short time they had been acquainted.
"And you?" he asked, "Murkrow?" His eyes fell on Jas as he gave her a knowing look.

She gave a small snort, rolling her eyes. "Well that's quite boring, I suppose. Was hoping there's some special, paparazzi-avoiding technique you've done before." She then hummed in thought, her lips pulled in an amused smile. "True. Well, we'd probably be blind either way, because camera flashes in the dark... not fun."
Ah. Well he wasn't wrong about pokemon and having to be provoke... but a fair share seem to have their own sort of mischievousness. "Beg to differ still. Maybe they aren't aggressive... but man, they can be jerks sometimes." Despite saying this, there wasn't an ounce of bitterness in her voice but more so a thoughtful expression played and a slightly funny memory. "I have the worse luck with Ghost types. They seem to enjoy picking on me... especially haunters." She crossed her arms, shaking her head before a small laugh tumbled past her lips, "I remember this one time, me and my dad was exploring this creepy forest for some photograph. And there was this haunter who wouldn't leave me be- pull my hair, try to trip me, spooking my father's hunkrow a couple times." She shrugged, "A total jerk... but my dad told me it must've been lonely. Could have done it a little nicer but yeah."
She grinned eagerly-- well she suppose swablu would always be a popular choice in terms of flying types but...
Maybe a bit childish, Mel leaned a little closer and with a hush voice, she said "Don't tell Jas, but I'm a big fan of Swablu. Altarias always been an old favorite." She gave a small giggled, leaning away once she finished. "They do, don't they? All graceful and sweet. My father use to have one but he ended up giving it away to my mother since she didn't travel with us..." A tinge of annoyance at the end, she was giddy nonetheless. "Anyways I'll make note to go to Fortree and see the ones they got there."
Wiggling a brow, she mused: "This is cool-- we both have good taste in favorite pokemon, haha. What your opinions of Hawluchas? Or Chatot? In Kalos, I use to see them here and there... always wanted one, to be honest."
He dismissed her eyeroll. It wasn't as though he was here to impress her or anything. As far as Benji was concerned, she was a fan. Or, well, her sister was a fan. He made a cringing face - just thinking about being assaulted by the camera's flash was bad enough for him. They were something you became numb to after you stood around for hours while people took your picture, but when you weren't expecting it, they were god awful. An absolute terror to deal with. Benji hated it. As if he needed more pictures of himself in circulation for people to pick out his flaws.
"Fair point," he admitted. He mostly dealt with domesticated show Pokemon around work, where they were tame and properly taken care of, only acting out if you held them funny and angered them. The gym Pokemon were docile, but Benji liked to think it was the gym leader's natural charisma, which had drawn him to them in the first place. He appeared sympathetic to Carmella's story. "I'd say. I guess they don't practise the whole 'be nice' thing to get a lady's attention." An attempt of well meant humour.
He looked apprehensively at her when she suddenly leaned in, not quite sure how to react. He gave her an incredulous look, eyes narrowed at her with a brow quirked. He pursed his lips and looked down at her Murkrow, wondering what would happen if he shared the news with Jas. He shook his head, still very much amused. Talk of Fortree got him talking again, though. "Well, if you're in the area, you should let me know. Give you the grand tour and all." Why he was going out of the way to help one bubblegum haired girl, he didn't know. Maybe he was feeling particularly nice today.
It was a weird feeling, nonetheless. Benji thought for a moment. "Hawlucha are interesting creatures, although I suppose their uniqueness is partially owed to their Fighting typing. With Chatot, I always found their ability for human speech interesting. Makes you wonder if you could teach other bird Pokemon to speak like they do, or if it's a trait inherited from Chatot..." He found himself speaking a lot. Benji watched his Hoothoot bouncing on his arm, finding it growing sore. "I suppose they would make good contest Pokemon," he reasoned, "Although, it's interesting there aren't any pure Flying-type Pokemon. It's always a secondary sort of thing."

"Pffft," She gave another unladylike snort, chuckling at the comment, "Yeah, I think you can put it that way." It... it was a joke, right? Honestly, Mel coudln't really tell; she caught wind of some sort of humor to it. Benji seemed to really have one setting and that's taking everything in coolly and calm.
She wondered. A mischievousness thought crossed her mind, I wonder if celeb boy flirts. He probably did but she come across her fair share of cool looking yet in actuality, dorky people when it came to such things. Flustered cheeks, babbling, the whole nine yards-- she doubt Benji did that but...
Carmella bit her bottom lip, sneaking a side glance. Well not every day you see a model, have a conversation, him offering for her to take his picture (when they get the chance, of course)... "Aww, that's pretty sweet of you to offer." She quirked a brow, nudging the guy with her elbow playfully, "Though almost sounds like a date, Benji. Either way, I accept it with a yes~" Mel chimed happily."You don't look too far off from my type, if I had to be honest." She pressed her lips together, to prevent the giggle that wanted to slip out again-- part of her was playing around but... Mel wouldn't say no either.
She let that sink in, gauging his reaction. She'll spring the "I'm kidding" if he looked more Oh hell no than she liked.
Well... okay maybe she found what the other did like to geek about. Letting Benji talk, she had a small smile as she nodded along. "Y'know, never thought about there being no pure flying." She stroked her chin in thought, "But Chatots are amazing contest pokemon in my eyes. Actually any pokemon could be a contest one if you try hard enough; I think they're the only kind of pokemon beside psychic types that can communicate. Not to mention, adorable." Which reminds me-- I need to go catching some pokemon."Hawlucha are enigma, though. I never understood how they could fly... you wouldn't think they could. The fighting is nice too-- a lot of cool moves and powerful. Then there's fletchling and talonflame-- interesting combo as well... and pretty cute as well." She laughed, "A little shallow but you gotta admit Talonflames look pretty graceful. So cool. Kinda like hunchrow or staraptor, yknow?"
Niceness was one thing, but when Carmella started referencing the possibility of it ending as a date, Benji's mind paused to take it all in. A... date, right. He couldn't remember the last time he had been on one of those. There was usually a boatload of drama thrown into the mix, whether or not Benji liked it. It had been a while, that was for sure. He wasn't sure if he really did like Carmella. She was a decent looking woman, although her energy was something that could potentially wear him down.
He cracked a wry smile. "Most people would call it a tour guide," he spoke pointedly, a light shrug. Sure, he could be a sensitive sweetheart kind, but Benji liked to think he wielded some degree of power when it came to people's hearts. "But whatever floats your boat." He carried an aloof grin on his face. Who he dated was of no one's concern but his. He wasn't entirely opposed to the idea, that was for sure.
Listening to Carmella talk was nice, though. He was kind of glad he going through Route 101 with someone that had an appreciation for the feathered creatures. "Mm, well, Hawlucha have more of a gliding motion, like an Emolga would." He gave her a quizzical stare. "Graceful wouldn't really be the word I'd use for them... majestic, in a way." Impressive birds as well. Not massive in size, but they commanded attention with a certain ferocity that Benji could admire. There was no stopping him with bird talk. If anything, it made the walk to Oldale a lot shorter.

Oh? The answer sounded like a promising one, to say the least.
A little surprise to see the smirk but she very much returned it with one of her own. A soft laugh, hooking her thumbs to the straps of her pack as she replied. "Mhm, sounds just a friendly tour guide." She shook her head, continuing with an airy and joking tone, "Sure know how to get a girl's hopes up, bud."
...Funny, she originally thought this walk would've been more of a one-sided conversation couple with long moments of silence; not she minded, talking was something she could do forever if you let her. This was nicer though-- hearing someone enthuse excitedly and knew what they were talking about. Probably even more, considering she still looked at pokemon with a rosey-glasses and bias meter being quite high. "Gliding... oh yeah. I forgot that emogla did the same." Tapping her chin, the thought still amused her-- when do they even discover that they could glide? Their mothers just kick them out of the nest and BAM? You're falling at a graceful rate. "I don't think I ever really seen one of those, to be honest. Only in my father's dex or pictures. They seem so tiny... but pretty cute."
Mel shrugged at the look she got, grinning all the more. "I'll give you that-- majestic. Really fucking awesome. Either way, I'd kill to get a fletchling. Or a dusk stone down the road for this baby back here."
The walk was coming to an end quicker than she wanted, to... be honest. She didn't like that. But sooner they were out the route and she could claim one of those comfy beds in the pokemon center, the better. Yet... her bright green eyes gave an inquisitive look.
"You're pretty fun to talk to..." She said. Cupping her chin, a lop-sided smile that looked a little impish coming from her. "Are you on your way to Petalburg? Because that's my current goal... wanna reach there before this festival is over. Maybe catch a contest if they're hosting." Or hang at the beach-- note to self, buy a swimsuit and soon.

let's go 12+ posts but ye end soon!! gible egg + hoothoot in thread holla Carmella Webbs
Had it been rude? He had meant it jokingly, but either way, it wasn't like he was entirely opposed to it. Normal dates were arranged with the exchange of numbers and whatnot first, though. This one had gone a little ahead of itself, but Benji wasn't too fussed about it. The cycle repeated itself in a manner he was familiar with. He wouldn't classify any of them as romances, though. The feeling rarely extended beyond physical attraction and lustful heat of the moments. He wasn't expecting that to change much with this pink haired indirect fan.
Instead, he stayed silent, letting her decide for herself. He didn't want it to be as though he was throwing around his weight like an entitled celebrity. He did, however, answer her musings about Emolga. "I've never trained one myself." They weren't exactly feathered, so were never really in his interests. He didn't know what other avians he wanted, to be honest. Maybe a Swablu, like he mentioned before. Anything that was good for this research project tasked by Birch was probably going to be useful.
He could make out Oldale's streetlamps in the distance. He tried to hasten his pace a little, and his Hoothoot was feeling it. The bird flapped his wings, hooting noisily through the night. Benji jerked his arm to have him keep his volume down. "Shh," he muttered, "Some people sleep in the night." The Hoothoot returned to impatiently fidgeting on Benji's arm. He raised his brow at Carmella's comment. Being good at conversation wasn't his forte, and to be complimented on it? "Hmm," he mumbled. His cheeks felt hot, but in the darkness, a blush of any sort wouldn't be visible.
"I am..." he answered, trying to think ahead on his plans. "I don't think I'll be making straight for it, though. I'll probably stay along in Oldale for the night... maybe the rest of the day." He didn't want to give any guarantees. Besides, there was Route 103 which he was considering travelling up to see if he could catch any good Pokemon there. "I do want to take a look at the gym," he declared, "Maybe get a badge." He hoped they didn't remember him. Things could get awkward if he had to engage in small talk. Absolute bane of his existence.

"If I ever come across one, might consider it..." Mel shrugged. though very slight, careful with not disturbing her rest passenger. The murkrow must've really been tired, sleeping through this chatter. But then again, shying away from being returned to his pokeball, as she asked before and again a while back, the bird did need his rest. Like me. She mused, Wish I could hitch a ride with someone. Jeez.
Well the playful thought that briefly passed her mind, asking Benji if he could but she wasn't that shameless yet and she could already see the lights of Oldale. This 'walking-to-places' business was as much of an exercise she'll get and while she wished in some reality, piggy-back riding was considered some form of it, she's probably just stick to what she can. Sigh.
She perked, hearing the other's pokemon stirring... er, well, flapping. Mel took a step closer, once the bird calmed down in his arms a little and reached over to pat the pokemon's head. Fidgety little thing. "Y'know, I wouldn't mind getting a picture of lil' guy either." She giggled the hoothoot's feathers feeling so soft under her finger tips. "My dad would probably love to see this silly guy."
Missing the blush, Mel dropped her hand away from the bird distraction; she kept close, not really stepping too far away once she stopped petting the hoothoot. Instead, she glanced up with interest. "... well, if you want the company, I wouldn't mind coming with you." She paused, digging in her pocket for her cell phone, "Though I understand if you say no. You could give your number if, um, you want?" Wait asking for his number... too soon? I mean, it's just a number. Part of her kinda expected the rejection-- from an celebrity, that type of thing wouldn't be given out so easily. But... Benji, on the other hand, didn't act like he hated her presence, so maybe she had a chance.
"The gym? Actually... taking on the gym challenge, not a bad plan." She grinned, nodding to herself as she stroked her chin in thought, "I never taken on a gym but I might consider taking it on if I get the chance." She hummed in thought, before poking Benji, "If you win and get a badge, I definitely want to battle you and Mr. Hoothoot there."
Carmella might have found it good to know that there was ever a need for Benji to give her a piggyback, the man would shoot it down. He was fit, thanks to exercise regimes that had been implemented to make sure he looked good for shoots, but Benji was not particularly well equipped with true physical strength. He kept his body toned, but there was no substantial muscle on him that could lift a grown woman for more than a few minutes. If anything, Carmella would just end up carrying him instead.
"Sure. I think he would love the attention." The Hoothoot in question seemed to understand that he was the topic of conversation now. He brightened up and leaned into Carmella's touch, very much enjoying the pets he was receiving. The taller man glanced down at her - when had she gotten so close to him? He didn't want to answer that question - and shrugged lightly. He was really taking things at his own pace. He wasn't entirely opposed to her company, although he feared it would end up taking a chunk out of that contest she had been talking about. "I'd be more worried about me putting you behind schedule," he noted, but made no attempt to clarify if it was alright or not.
He was too busy contemplating whether or not to hand his number over. Celebrityhood was tricky business, especially when it came to stuff like this. He paused. "...Alright. But if it gets out somehow, I'll get my agent to sue." He had to think about the potential consequences. Giving around his number was touchy, and the last thing he wanted was getting lewd pictures sent to him by fans or otherwise. He tapped the number onto the keypad and hit call, just so that he had a record of her number and knew who was trying to ring.
Oldale slowly came into view. Benji had never been more relieved, to be honest. "I thought you were 'coordinator extraordinaire'," he commented, "Switching to being a trainer now?" Talk about fickle-mindedness, though. He gave her a dirty look when she prodded him, trying to mask the fact that he was ticklish. "Alright, if we can beat the gym." He narrowed his eyes. "The first official gym in Rustboro is a Rock-type. Hardly advantageous for us." That would be a hurdle he would have to cross in time... until then, the Pokemon Center beckoned for them with bright lights, suitable for selfies and other silly behaviour.

Mel shrugged, obviously please by how receptive the bird pokemon was to her touch-- there wasn't a better feeling than being liked by a pokemon, especially one as lively as this hoothoot. "I don't really hear a no~" She chimed, smiling sweetly as she could. "I'm as late as it is-- at least I think so. And it's nicer to travel with someone than being alone, y'know." And she really meant it. She... was kinda hopeless when it came to this traveling business-- despite doing the whole camping and outdoors shebang, she was definitely spoiled in the sense her father always handled all that junk.
Plus the perk of him having flying pokemon was a nice touch and it being rare that she needed to sleep in her sleeping bag.
Chuckling, she rolled her eyes. "Don't worry-- as tempting as money sounds, rather keep this to myself. Not really the sharing sort." Mel winked, as she took back her phone; glancing at the contact name, with a couple of taps, she edited "BENJI" to "BIRD NERD". Satisfied with the change, she snickered to herself before pocketing the phone.
"Well there's no rules against coordinators taking on the gym challenge." She replied, giving a shrug. "Beside, accomplishing both the gym challenge and kicking ass in contests? Nothing more extraordinaire than that." She wriggle eyebrow, not phased by the dirty look given; huh? Did he not like that?
Feeling playful, she poked his side again with a small giggle. "True, it isn't. But if we could get ours hands on some wingull... or maybe fletchling before then, I'd imagine our luck would be alright?" Or I could temporary catch something beside flying... haha, nah. Wingull or bust.
"But we could save that talk for tomorrow, I guess. Right now," rubbing her hands, she quicken her pace as the sight of the pokemon center was before them, "Picture time!"
She didn't hear a no, and that sounded just about right. Benji saw no reason to turn down Carmella, not yet anyway. He had rarely travelled beyond the comforts of Lilycove and Fortree, so Benji could hardly empathise. "Perhaps," he shrugged. He dismissed her winking and watched her tapping at her phone and snickering to herself. He couldn't help but to wonder what was so funny - but it looked like Carmella wasn't intending to show him any of it. Besides, he expected people to respect his privacy, so he would do the same to them and din't probe further. Maybe he'd ask her another time.
"True," he repeated. "I wonder what hardcore trainers or coordinators feel about that, though." You know, those purists and stuff that vehemently subscribed to following the path they had chosen. He was rambling in his thougths when he felt another sharp jab to his side, caught off guard. A small squeak escaped his lips and Benji looked at Carmella grumpily, threatening to slap her fingers away. "Stop that."
Wingull wouldn't be too hard, Benji figured, but a Fletchling seemed like a death wish. Those were twice as weak to Rock-type moves. Benji wasn't sure how they'd go around handling it. Carmella didn't give him any more time to think about it either. She motioned towards the Center and Benji walked as well, wanting to get himself tucked under the sheets as soon as possible. He was lucky that no one else seemed to pick up on his stardom.
He waved towards the Nurse Joy and offered his phone. "Could I trouble you to take a photo of us?" he asked politely. He was always unsure how to pose in such photos. He shuffled beside Carmella and raised his hands in a 'V' shape, one corner of his mouth quirked in an awkward smile. Shots like these were always hard on him. He scrutinised it, deeming it decent enough for sending, before dropping it into Carmella's phone in a message. "There."
