jackson doesn't remember the last time he's seen his best friend; aries left him back in johto to study in rustboro city a few years ago. so naturally, after jackson turned seventeen, he decided to move to hoenn and start a new pokemon journey. it meant starting over, but it was well worth it. aries was worth it.
littleroot was unfamiliar, but at the same time, he felt like it wasn't all that different. or maybe, it was the feeling of starting a whole new adventure that made his heart race just a little too fast. or it was the idea of seeing his friend for the first time in years, but he'd archived that thought for later, almost as if he was afraid of it. he wasn't.
he tapped his foot, waiting at the "littleroot town" sign, right where he'd messaged aries and told him he'd be waiting. but, of course, the other boy had to be late. new adventure or not, this was getting ridiculous. aries was always late. but then, jackson guessed, he wouldn't be the same old aries if he changed too much.

aries walks out of professor birch's lab with a frown. this isn't at all what he wanted. he wanted a cute pokemon, not this thing. the first time he released it, all it had done was zoom around his face - probably with some shit-eating grin, even though aries couldn't even tell. he just knew. this was supposed to be a fun adventure, and aries was already down about it...
at least there was one thing that was sure to cheer him up. and it - or rather, he - was currently waiting for aries in the center of littleroot. aries instantly cheered up as he flung himself in jackson's direction, "jax!" he cried, tackling the other male, "i can't believe you came all the way to hoenn!" even ecstatic was an understatement compared to how aries was feeling right now. he leaned closer to jackson in excitement. aries had always been horrible with the concept of 'personal space' especially now with how excited he was, "what pokemon did you get from the professor?"

jackson had no idea what he was expecting when he saw aries for the first time in several years, but he's 99% sure this wasn't it. since when was aries this tall? jackson pulls himself away from his friend and stares aries down, head to toe. he's so different, now. taller, sure, and more mature... his frame is wider, too. he's not that pre-pubescent kid anymore, that's for sure, and jackson isn't sure how he feels about it.
"stop calling me that," he mumbles, annoyed by the shortened version of his name that aries is oh-so fond of. he's never liked it, and nobody dares use it after jackson's laid into them. nobody but aries. the boy is one-of-a-kind. "i told you i would. didn't you believe me?"
jackson reaches for the pokeball at his side. it's so crisp and new - nothing like the pokeballs of his pokemon back home - and jackson is sure that'll change all too quickly. still, like a pair of brand new shoes, he promises himself he'll take extra good care of the ball so it doesn't get scratched up or dirty. "i got a growlithe," he said. jackson releases his pokemon proudly, showing her off to his best friend, "you?" he raises his eyebrow at aries in question.

aries was all smiles for his best friend. it was like their relationship just picked up right where it left off, and it felt amazing. "well... i..." he stumbles over his words almost too quietly, "i thought maybe you would have forgotten," he mumbles. he can't look jackson in the eye, so he buries his head in the other boy's shoulder until he can look up again.
he does when he hears the familiar click of a pokeball, and realizes that jackson is showing him his very own, brand new pokemon. aries' expression slips for a second, but he covers it up with a big smile (not too big, can't let jackson find out anything's wrong). "wow, she's adorable, jax," he says cheerfully, "i got a lame porygon," aries' laugh is perhaps a little too forced; he awkwardly bends down to pet jackson's pokemon.
"soo... what'dja name her?" aries looks back up at jackson expectedly, smile perfect once again.

"well i didn't," jackson retorts angrily. his eyes were closed, hand pinching the bridge of his nose. annoyed would be the first word to come to mind. but aries is always like this, and jackson has always been easily annoyed. yet, it never changed their friendship at all, "whatever. i'm here now, okay." he certainly didn't come to hoenn to fight with his best friend.
jackson watches aries' expression slip momentarily. he'd known the other far too long to miss a hint like that - even if it's been a few years. they grew up together, and jackson was far from stupid. but he was also aware that aries was going out of his way to hide whatever it was, which meant bringing it up was out of the question. "i don't know why you'd be upset over a porygon," he immediately regrets the words the second they leave his mouth. god knows aries can be a little shit when he's upset, and jackson doesn't want to deal with that so soon. but then, aries changed the subject hastily, and jackson breathed a sigh of relief that he hadn't realized he'd been holding. "why would i name her?" he asked with one eyebrow raised. he never named his pokemon. it was such a hassle.
Post by aries bellflower on May 22, 2015 6:42:10 GMT
aries blinked a few times, like he was trying to comprehend jackson's words. "i'm not upset," he denied. of course his best friend would notice he was a little upset. not that he wasn't going to continue to deny it for as long as he could... "its just not... cute, y'know?" he whined. growlithe was so fluffy and adorable, and porygon was, well, the complete opposite. sure, he had gible once it hatched, but that would take forever, and he'd be stuck with nothing but stupid porygon until then.
"what do you mean? you have to name her!" he exclaimed, jumping back up into his friend's face, "she's your new partner!" he leaned in towards jackson and poked his chest, as if doing anything would prove his point, "besides, i even named my porygon - you can clearly name your growlithe!"
Post by jackson rothstein on May 22, 2015 9:25:56 GMT
"don't tell me you're not - i know you better than that," jackson growled. no matter how much time passed, aries was his best friend. that wasn't changing any time soon. "not cute enough? that's what you're upset about?" jackson asked incredulously, rolling his eyes. of all the things... he almost wants to laugh at how stupid it sounds, but he knows better than to do that. at least, in front of aries. he'll definitely have to have a good chuckle over it later, though.
jackson sighed in frustration. if aries is expecting him to come up with names for every pokemon he catches... what a pain. but it's not the worst thing aries has made him do... "fine," he'll at least have to come up with a name theme. jackson turns and looks at the town around him. it's leafy and green, tons of flowers everywhere. "iris. her name is iris," he narrows his eyes at aries before he realizes that they're way too close. jackson pushes aries away gently, hoping aries takes the hint and backs off, because jackson really isn't good at dealing with his best friend in such close proximity. "you happy now?"
Post by aries bellflower on May 23, 2015 3:57:37 GMT
aries sighs in defeat, "i'm stupid, i know," he mumbles, almost too quiet to hear, but he's so close to jackson, that he knows his friend can hear him. he leans his shoulder against jackson's and sighs again, "i guess i just... pictured things going a little differently in my head... and now everything kindof sucks," he admits. he takes in a shaky breath and crosses his arms, as if holding in his feelings - not that it matters, of course, because like jackson said, he knows aries far too well.
aries' cheers up a bit when jackson agrees to nickname his pokemon without a fight. whether jackson is doing it because he actually wants to, or he's just going along with aries' antics, the chestnut-haired male doesn't care. "wow, im impressed - how'd you come up with that?" he teases. honestly, aries was expecting something more generic, or maybe a response along the lines of 'you name her' but he's glad jackson seems to be taking this seriously, "i like it, jax. it fits her well,"

the first thing you should know about jackson rothstein is that he's hopelessly awful at cheering people up. its not that he doesn't know what to do... but he's awkward. he's not even great at basic 'friendship', and this is just one more step out of his comfort zone. great.
"i-it's not completely stupid," he bit out awkwardly. lowering his gaze to the dirt around his feet. "you've always been overly dramatic, i guess i'm used to it by now," yeah. that's the word. overdramatic. it was one of those things jackson knew aries wouldn't just grow out of over time. right along with being an insufferable brat when he wanted to get his way. it was something jackson was just used to after spending so much time with aries. he'd try to argue that anybody would feel the same, but he knows somewhere (not that he'll admit it aloud) that he's a special case when it comes to aries bellflower.
"are you doubting my ability to nickname my pokemon?" jackson accused, raising his eyebrow in question. he can definitely feel the heat of his cheeks when aries compliments him. he ducks his head to hide it, and grumbles, "yeah, thanks,"

aries gasps dramatically, "overly dramatic? never," before laughing at his best friend. he leans his forehead on jackson's shoulder as he laughs, clinging onto his arm just slightly. he enjoys how his mood is so much brighter whenever jackson is around. he's hardly even that upset over being stuck with this stupid pokemon anymore.
"are you doubting my ability to nickname my pokemon?" aries cackles at his best friend's words. jackson is always so serious in everything he does, aries had merely assumed he'd be the same when it came to 'stupid nicknames'. but then, here they were... "i'm not saying i'm not, but..." he trailed off with a smile, "yeah, no, i kinda am," he changes his mind with a shake of his head, brown waves of hair flying into his face, almost covering his eyes.
"jax, are you... embarrassed?" aries teases after a moment. he pokes jackson in the chest and bends down so he can get a better look at his best friend's face, "yeah you are ~ you're totally embarrassed because i complimented you," he cackles in amusement.

jackson is far too aware of how close aries is. the other male has his forehead resting against jackson's shoulder, and his hands almost wrapped around jackson's arm. aries's laugh rings in his ear like music. if he wasn't flustered before, he certainly is now. "get off," he growls. he has a mind to shake his arm out of aries's grasp, but he's fully aware of how easy and comfortable this is. he ends up shaking aries off of him anyway, too uncomfortable with just how familiar the touch is. after all, this is aries and jackson is ninety nine percent certain that if anybody were to have cooties, it would be aries.
"that doesn't even make sense," jackson points out, even though he's used to this kind of thing coming from aries. he doesn't make a point to understand, either. aries is like a foreign creature, there will forever be something about the other boy that jackson will never quite get, despite knowing the other boy like the back of his hand. "and im not embarrassed," he's lying. jackson turns his face away from his friend trying to tone down the red in his cheeks. it's far harder than he expected. "you're an idiot. you took me by surprise," he grumbles, trying to make up a believable excuse. not that it sounds believable at all to his ears.
he takes a deep breath and stares down at the egg in his bag. as much fun as it is talking to aries, they really need to start their journey. and jackson really needs a few moments away from the brunette if this is ever going to work out, "come on, lets go head towards route 101," jackson really hopes his voice sounds remotely even, "these eggs aren't going to hatch themselves, anyway,"

aries frowned when jackson shook him off. rude. he wanted to roll his eyes and cling onto jackson's shoulder again, like some lovesick girl, but he refrained. he was far too amused with jackson's denial over something so human. it's not like the rest of the world didn't get embarrassed sometimes - but big ole jackson had to be mr. perfect and refuse to admit that he had weakness. what an idiot.
still, aries couldn't help but smile at it. he mouthed jackson's words "you took me by surprise," to get a feel for them in his own mouth, because they sounded so weird coming from jackson. "so that's what the kids are calling it these days," aries joked, flicking his best friend in the side of the head. "whatever you say,"
the brunette looked at his egg with pride. the little thing would hatch soon, but jackson was right, they'd need to keep moving for that to happen. "yeah, you're right," he didn't really want to go off, he'd be just as content talking to jackson in littleroot for the rest of the day, but aries was sure jackson wanted to battle and capture new pokemon. and aries did want his gible to hatch soon. god knows he could use something other than this dumb porygon.
