Don't worry about me, I'm gonna make it alright Got my enemies crossed out in my sight I take a bad situation gonna make it right In the shadows of darkness I stand in the light You see it's our style to keep it true I've had a bad year, a lot to go through I've been knocked out, beat down, black and blue She's not the one coming back for you She's not the one coming back for you*
Like a child he practically ran at top speeds into the first route, his excitement overwhelming his inner fears of what could be lying in the tall grass that scattered the area. Lio only stood still when he took in a large breath of fresh air, the excitement and adrenaline he was feeling felt good. Freedom was the first thing that came to his mind, after all he had never gotten along that great with his father - so being able to start out on his journey gave him new life.
The young teen's Turtwig finally caught up with him, nudging itself against his trainer's leg and wagging its stump of a tail. A giant smile appeared across his face as he picked up the Turtle and began walking again. The pokemon was beyond adorable, to him at least, and he was really happy that this was what Birch had decided to present him with. He named the Turtwig Grotto, believing it fit. The pokemon itself was much like a dog in mannerism, which one would find funny if they saw it.
Putting Grotto on his shoulder, Lio took a deep - albeit shaky - breath and stepped further into the route's thick foliage. The excitement finally calmed town and was replaced with nervousness and anxiety, and part of him wished so much that he had his friend behind him. Lio shivered slightly, being kicked lightly by the Turtwig on his shoulder for reassurance. Shaking his head he called out as if trying to attract any form of attention, bad or not.
"Alright you lousy Pokemon! Show me what you've got!" His voice was loud and demanding, but he was forcing himself to shove back the feeling of dread he got in the back of his head. He couldn't be timid, if he did he wouldn't be able to stand up on the big stage with his turtwig.
He didn't want that.
❚ TAGS @wildmod ❚ NOTES This is a really great template I love it lots. Mostly rambling.
lousy? this seedot was far from it. he was the best seedot on this route. and he'll prove it. he dropped down from a tree and ran towards the trainer and his turtwig. time to attack.
Don't worry about me, I'm gonna make it alright Got my enemies crossed out in my sight I take a bad situation gonna make it right In the shadows of darkness I stand in the light You see it's our style to keep it true I've had a bad year, a lot to go through I've been knocked out, beat down, black and blue She's not the one coming back for you She's not the one coming back for you*
His ability to stand his ground seemed to falter instantly the moment he saw something leap down from the trees, it looked like a giant acorn but it didn't stop the trainer from shouting out a yell of surprise and leap back. The Turtwig positioned on his shoulder fell off, landing with a thud on the ground. As the Seedot ran at top speeds towards trainer and Pokemon, Grotto let out a small growl and ran to block the attack from hitting his trainer.
Lio had to force himself out of his stupor and back to what was at hand. He successfully managed to rile up a pokemon to fight, he can't back out now, that'd only prove that he was nothing but a coward if he did. So the young teen took a shaky breath and clenched his fists, gritting his teeth together. The turtwig had been propelled backwards from the attack that hit, though it only did a small chunk of damage, and he plopped back into its shell to try and stop any added impact.
"Hey no Grotto, don't do that! You can't hide on me!" Lio called out, somewhat distraught, but the Pokemon didn't come out. He tilted his head, realizing that it was probably using a move to protect itself. "OH, okay we can work with this. Use, uh, Tackle! Yeah that should work!" Lio found himself smiling, as if he accomplished a big feet... It was kind of obvious he was a newbie, huh?
It made him feel a million times better when Grotto called out with a "Twig!" from within the shell, and propped itself up right before spinning and hurdling itself like a bowling ball towards the Seedot; a very interesting combination between Withdraw and Tackle being utilized to make something more unique.
wow. turtles sure looked dumb. the turtwig retracted back into his shell for a brief moment. it made the seedot laugh. but then the attack came in and his laugh was gone.

Lio bit his lip and Grotto let out a small cry, coming out of its shell as it was batted with another Quick Attack. However, the attack did less damage than it did before and it made the young teen's muscles relax more. Grotto's feet huffed at the ground, breath coming out of it - not that it was exhaustion causing it, in fact it was adrenaline.
Still wanting to be creative, Lio had to think on his next move. There wasn't an audience to entice, but that didn't mean he couldn't get practice in while he was fighting wild pokemon. The pokemon he owned jumped back and forth, and an idea hit him. While the logical sense would be to go with the strongest hitting move, or at least that's what his brain told him, Lio ignored that and threw it out the window. Instead, he swipped his hand forward to try and get his turtwig to look at the grassy terrain.
"Use Grass Knot, then hit it with another Tackle attack." He voiced a bit more clearer this time, taking deep breaths in-between commands to try and keep himself even and focused. The idea got through to the turtle at least, and with an excited jump the pokemon stomped at the ground - sending small waves up and causing grass around the pokemon to grow and snap. However, that wasn't the only thing, shortly after that Grotto came charging in with a tackle to try and catch the Seedot off guard.

The teen huffed in frustration, Seedot avoided his attack! That was hardly fair! He didn't care if he was being childish about this, he thought his plan had been full proof. Then to add salt to the wound, his own Pokemon was hit by Seedot; there was clearly a huge difference between agility between both Pokemon. He needed to adapt, but the answer was trying to figure out how.
Lio's fingers twitched around the area of his bag his spare pokeballs were in, but he hesitated. Instead he took adeep, albeit shaky, breath. "Screw mind games." he whispered, shaking his head to try and keep whatever confidence he managed to scrounge up from falling.
"It doesn't matter if its faster... Just charge it, keep going with force and knock it." His logic was probably very flawed, but his Pokemon was loyal enough to follow the newbie coordinator's fake hotheadedness. Grotto barked and ducked his head, rushing forward as fast as he could for a turtle to land as hard a tackle as he could muster. After all it was his strongest attack against this Pokemon.
"We can do this... maybe." The brunette spoke softly to himself, hand still twitching around the pockets of his bag. He wished he would stop doubting himself so much. It only made him feel drained.
The Seedot toppled onto the ground knocked out; or he thought it was knocked out. The teen waited a few minutes to double check, and when he was sure it definetely was down he let out a sigh of relief. He didn't even know he was worried until the battle had ended, and that was evident by his pounding heart.
"G-good work, Grotto." He squeaked out and hesitantly stepped further into the grass, fumbling with the sack attached to his shoulder for the empty pokeballs he was given. Should he catch it? Lio pursed his lips, looking around oddly for a decision before landing on the seedot again, an then finally the pokeball in his hand.
He couldn't leave it here passed out either. Lio shook his head, earning a confused look from his Turtwig, before calling the fainted pokemon inside it and waiting for the ball to stop moving. With a shaky breath he looked around again, as if eyeballing for anything else that may have heard him or the battle going on.
A bark-like noise caused him to squeak again, but it was only his Turtwig. "You want to continue?" The Turtwig wagged its stubby turtle tail and nodded, running around pretty energetically for a slow pokemon. "O-okay fine. You're right I shouldn't back out now I just started- I caught a pokemon! I should feel proud!" He beamed, and as a result so did the pokemon.
"Alright Grotto, onward to more challenges!" He thrust the fainted seedot's pokemon in the air before widening his eyes and blushing, putting the pokeball around his belt having somehow forgotten all about it despite it being in his hands.
she was perched upon a single branch, her gaze shifted occasionally as she took in the sun-bathed area. when the human had passed by, she eyed him curiously. his shoulder looked awfully comfortable in comparison to the rough layer of bark she rested upon. with a quiet hoot, she flapped her tiny wings and proceeded to fly toward the human male. allowing both of her feet to settle upon the surface of the narrow shoulder, she blinked owlishly as she settled comfortably onto him.
a wild hoothoot has appeared! the wild hoothoot perches on lionel's shoulder!
The hoothoot landing on his shoulder came completely unexpected. He didn’t notice it until he felt a heavy weight come perch itself onto the area, and his eyes went wide. Normally he would have screamed on instinct, but he caught himself and he tried to take a good look at what the foreign object was. He calmed down significantly when it was only an owl, or well a Hoothoot to be exact but it’s the same thing anyways.
It dawned on him that it could probably feel him tense up under it, and so he forced himself to release that tension. Lio figured that since birds seemed to be just as skiddish, he the wrong move might either scare it off or make it become hostile. As not to make too much noise, he whispered to the Hoothoot in a soft voice. “Hello?” It sounded a bit more like a question than he would have liked it to be. He had to be honest with himself. This was an awkward position to be in.
“You um…” He thought of what to say, trying to be strategic so that maybe he could get the pokemon to come with him without a fight. That’d put a huge stroke to his pride “Want to come with me little one?” He smiled down softly at the pokemon. He hoped that was the right thing to say, he really did.
the hoothoot turned her eyes toward the male once he addressed her. he spoke softly, and she merely released a noise in response.
"hoot?"
his tone was kindly, and he appeared to have taking a quick liking to the female bird. the hoothoot found this surprisingly cute, and released another chirp.
"hoothoot."
why not? she wasn't doing anything in particular out here. most days were quiet and bland, anyway.
A grin plastered across the teen’s face when the hoothoot gave response. While as a human he couldn’t entirely understand what the Pokémon was saying, he had a rough idea and it made him excited. The Turtwig on the ground, who could understand her, also gave a positive reaction with a wag of a tail and a skip. “Twig turtwig!” He called up excitedly, clearly happy it was able to make a friend instead of having to fight against the bird.
Lio picked up a pokeball from the bag at his side and offered it to her. “I’m going to have to catch you though, so that you won’t get lost or anything.” The brunette gave a kind smile, and tapped it against the Hoothoot’s head and then, while shaking, placed it on the ground. From what he heard, since it wasn’t fainted there wasn’t a 100% catchrate. So if the ball popped open in his hands, it’d hurt her in the process. He didn’t want that to happen, she seemed like such a nice little owl.
So he stood back and watched it protectively, making sure nothing came along and went after the ball in the meantime. His Turtwig was running around excitedly, occasionally looking at the ball and giving an excited yip before going back to running. “Calm down Grotto! You’re going to hurt yourself!” He said with a sigh, wondering how on earth a turtle of all things could have this much bound up energy in the first place.
After a few shakes, the ball finally came to a stop. The feeling that he was able to catch a pokemon without fainting it made him feel giddy inside, and the grin on his face grew wider. His turtwig was jumping around in glee, or well it should have been. Grotto had stopped silent as soon as Lio picked up the ball.
This was not something Lio was expecting, clearly. In concern, he looked towards the turtle pokemon only to find it frozen and staring off in a random direction. The teen tilted his head to the side, gigantic grin that was plastered on his face only a moment ago faded into a flat line of confusion. There was a moment of blinking, and he broke the eerily silence. “…Are you okay Grotto?”
The turtwig responded by moving closer to him so that it was tucked underneath his legs. Sighing, Lio moved to pick the turtle up only to stop dead again. He looked in the direction Turtwig was facing in, and it landed on a gray cat-like pokemon with an expressionless face. He couldn’t stop the shiver that involuntarily went down his spine, and while staring picked the turtle up and held him close.
Grotto retreated into his shell.
“Dear lord, Grotto stop pretending to be a porcupine.” He growled, “Its only an espurr relax-…” His sentence trailed off when he saw what was matted around the pokemon’s fur. His mouth formed into an “o” shape and he tried to blink off the oncoming primal panic that was trying to tell him to move away. “What reason have you got to be covered in that?” He tilted his head, cringing when his voice came out meek and squeaky instead of curious like he wanted it to.
Sighing again, he picked out a pokeball and recalled his shaken up turtwig. In his place he picked out the pokeball he just put away and sent Hoothoot out again, the owl pokemon giving a hoot in curiosity as to why it was brought out immediately so soon, the human’s accomplice being nowhere in sight.
“I’m sorry to make you fight this soon, Hoothoot.” He hadn’t given the bird a name currently, he’d have to fix that when he had the time and ability to think clearly. “Use hypnosis on the espurr please. Put it to sleep.” He shook off the shiver that tried to creep its way into his voice and swallowed it. It’s just a cat for crying out loud, they were a frequent pet in Kalos.
…Was this one sick?
“Use tackle on it too... I’m sure it doesn’t have any psychic moves but just to make sure.” The hoothoot was already making notice however, and its eyes shawn brightly as it looked directly at the Espurr. The bird then swooped in at a fast pace to make room for tackle.
