In truth he doesn't know too much about the gym challenge itself, everything he knows comes from primary school, gym leaders and champions change over time, and so his information may be outdated, for the most part at least, still he continues to answer the queries. "I know that after you beat the gym leader you fight a gauntlet of the regions most elite powerful trainers. They're leagues more powerful than the gym leaders, but also all specialize in a single type. They're icons of those who wish to master one type of pokemon, It's not even the fights that are daunting, it's the fact that you have to fight them all back to back, no pokemon center in between. If you're strong enough to make it past that, then you're allowed a shot at the title." He stretches attempting to retrieve any more information about the Elite 4 that he's stored away since his youth. "I couldn't tell you who the Elite 4 is currently, I don't even know who the current champ is to be honest, but who knows maybe even guys like us can make it there if we travel enough, who knows."
He reaches in his bag for a bottle of water while walking offering the man a swig before downing it himself. "As for gyms that are close it's all relative friend. Technically Petalburg's is closest, and Dewford's isn't too far off, but most people start their challenge in my hometown. Rustboro city." Thoughts of Rusboro bring more anguish than happiness, in truth he'd just done everything to leave knowing he'd return sooner rather than later. Bad memories clouded him mentally and physically, but still he continues walking. 'One step at a time.' he reminds himself, the big picture overwhelmed him so he'd just do what he could right now, and that hopefully would be enough. He watches the gligar, and Larvesta as well who seem interested in this information, the former more so.
"Anyways apparently there's something interesting going down in Petalburg soon, I'm actually on my way there now, but I don't know if I'll make it in time, no point in stressing it though." He moves in silence for a minute or two listening to Basil's job description and really what made it worth it for the man. In truth when he worked at the mart all he felt was jealousy every one who came in looked free, or rather more free than he was, finally he gets to experience that same freedom that he's dreamt of for so long.
"Isn't much in Oldale town to be entirely honest, lots of guys like us... Maybe younger. It's a hub for starting trainers, only thing I know worthwhile is a decent Cafe." He just hopes the spot wont be crowded when he arrives. "I plan on stopping there and moving on, I can hit Petalburg by nightfall if I keep moving." The idea of asking Basil to travel with him has come up a number of times now, but he thinks asking the man would be too sudden, still he plans to ask if only out of whim, perhaps when they reach Oldale he'll drop the question.
"Care to have a drink when we reach the town? It'll be on me."

"Jeez. I hope I'm not getting too over my head with this. You mean I have to defeat all of the gyms and then I have to beat the four strongest trainers in the region before I can even get a shot at the Champion?" Basil placed a hand on his head wearily, unsure of what to make of all of this complicated Pokemon League business. Gligar lowered his eyelids, annoyed by his trainer's moaning and groaning. "And I have to fight these "Elite Four" back to back? No breaks in between? Mm, maybe I shouldn't go for the Champion title-- OW!"
Without warning, Gligar jabbed a claw into Basil's ribs, causing the dark-skinned human to flinch awkwardly. "What was that for?!" Basil whined, massaging his side. Gligar only growled and shook his head, eyes narrowing in distaste. "What? You think I can become Champion?" The Johto Pokemon lowered his eyelids before nodding once firmly. He then crossed his arms over his chest and continued staring at Basil, silently scolding him. "Well, if he thinks we can do it, then I guess it doesn't hurt to try ..." Basil muttered, politely declining the offer of water. "Wait, what's happening in Petalburg? I haven't heard any news from there if there is any." The twenty-three year old ran a hand through his hair. "You know what? Maybe it will be a good idea to hit Petalburg. I'll stop in Oldale with you though ... as long as it's cool with you." A pause. "I don't drink though."

"Seems like you two are made for each other." He chuckles as the trainer and pokemon continue their antics. "And I told you he likes you." Those two would make a good team down the line, or at least that what he thinks. They balanced each other out in a sense, Basil seemed wishy washy but he felt like a thoughtful guy, someone who didn't go over his head, while Gligar seemed to be just the opposite, Adamant, and rash alike it was a pokemon that knew what it wanted and wouldn't dream of backing down. The two would play to each other's strengths and protect each others weaknesses. Or at least that's what he thinks. He says nothing at the two but smiles looking ahead wondering about the future. But that didn't mean he and Larvesta didn't have something special of their own.
"I heard about it from a passerby, around this time of year they gather the trainers in the area and have them explore the caves around Petalburg beach. For what I don't know entirely, but there's bound to be something interesting there, and I can always use a little more cash, so why not. It seems like a fun summer activity you know. A good way to start a summer journey, but I'm cutting it a bit close signups close tomorrow evening if I'm not mistaken."
He sniggers before speaking, "Well then we share something in common I don't drink liquor first thing in the morning either, but typically they sell coffee at cafes, not booze man. Sorry for the miscommunication."His eyes lose focus for a moment, "Or do you not drink coffee either?" NOTES: u right she broke af. maybe i'll take bonni's she has a job. TAGGED: Basil Sarvis

Basil rolled his eyes as Miles continued to tease him. "I didn't know taking a claw to the ribs meant that a Pokemon likes you," he grumbled, eyeing the Gligar. The scarred-up Pokemon snickered, tucking at the tattered black scarf wrapped around his neck. There were a few red spots on the piece of cloth but it didn't look like it had been dyed that way. Was that ... blood?
Miles spoke more about the event. Apparently, Petalburg hosted events that involved traversing through the caves. It sounded like some kind of tourist attraction mixed with an excavation excursion. It sounded interesting at the very least though Basil wasn't too sure about how safe the whole idea was. He wasn't the type to willingly go into potentially dangerous places. "I don't know, man; that doesn't really sound too safe. Is it safe at least? Do I have to worry about wild Pokemon trying to eat us or something?" Gligar groaned and rolled his eyes at his trainer's inquiries. "Well, I'm not really into booze at all ... and I don't drink coffee either." What a party-killer. "But I'll find something to drink there, don't worry about me. Plus, if sign-ups close tomorrow, then I'm going to have to leave Oldale Town too to get to Petalburg on time. Did you want to travel there together?" Basil scratched his cheek. "I think it'd be a good idea; we can ... watch each other's backs and ... yeah."
"I'm sure they'll have something for you, Milk juice whatever it is I'll cover it this time around." It's odd meeting a young man around his age who didn't drink coffee in some version honestly, then again was Basil actually around his age? He doesn't care to ask.
"I doubt Petalburg would allow trainers to explore the caves if they were that dangerous, and I don't know of many Wild pokemon who eat humans if any." Larvesta continues to scuttle beside them making a noise that can only be perceived as a laugh of sorts as the men continued talking. "How are you gonna become the champion if you can't navigate through a couple of caverns." He jabbed at the man once again, despite it not being quite as literal as his pokemon did it served its purpose. As the conversation continued it seemed Basil was interested in the exploration after all. "Oh so you wanna do it now?" He smirks as they continue Oldale town in the distance now.
He's beaten to the punch as Basil offers to travel together, he slides his hands into his pockets grasping at lent and empty pokeballs all the while. "Sure, I could use a friend and your interesting Basil, I don't see why not." Having someone to watching his back will be good in the long run, he knows this already, he also believes traveling with Basil will bring some excitement down the line. "Well, it's good to know that they'll have something that I'll drink. You don't have to worry about spotting me unless ... you really want to." Resting at a cafe was a good idea, especially since the two had been traveling for quite some time now. It was true that traveling by vehicle or train was much quicker, but Basil wanted to get the experience of seeing and going through the routes the old fashioned way. Besides, it would help toughen up him, get him used to going against the wilderness, the elements, and all sorts of crazy ass Pokemon who would want to eat him.
"Huh. I guess you have a point. You can never be too careful when it comes to stuff like this. I've heard a lot of trainers doing all sorts of dangerous things," Basil said, briefly glancing over at Gligar. Gligar stared at him immediately; with his scarred visage along with his sheer size, the Johto Pokemon was undeniably intimidating. Miles asked Basil if he was still going to go through with the goal of becoming the Hoenn Champion. "..." Basil looked at his starter Pokemon. "Is being part of a Champion's team something you want?" The Gligar thought for a moment. Then, he growled softly and nodded his head in affirmation. A meaty pincer was raised into the air. At first, the Gligar rested the pincer against his chest whilst growling out his species' name; he was talking but in complete Pokespeak. Then, he pointed at Basil, still saying his name over and over again in a deep, guttural tone. "Uh ..." Basil really didn't know what to make of all that, but the nod was enough for him. "I suppose that's a "yes" then," he deduced. Gligar said his species' name once in solid affirmation.
"I'm going to try for the title then. What could go wrong?" Secretly, Basil hated himself for saying that. "Well, since we're traveling together, I feel better since ... you know, I'm a complete newbie at training and this entire region."
"Well then let's make a way a friend. I don't know too much about pokemon battling or training either, but I do know the region pretty well seeing as I've wanted to travel for...a long time now, over the years I've done e a little bit of reading about the region itself." His new friend is passive and unsure of himself , while he is closed off, selfish, and not quite trustworthy. He wonders if by the end of this journey how they'll have changed or if they'd change at all. They say, 'only time will tell' and he has no choice but to accept that.
It's apparent the Gligar wants to fight the champion, Larvesta's a little more energetic now as well he wonders if that's what the fire type pokemon wants as well, but he says nothing on the matter simply petting the larva pokemon before moving onward. Maybe he'd take the gym challenge too, it couldn't hurt right?
"Two newbie trainers decide to travel together and take on the world." He reiterates their general goal right now as they walk, "How cliched." His tone is sarcastic, and maybe even a little sardonic but he isn't disappointed by the turn of events as they move ever closer to Oldale. "Seeing as we're traveling together we're not gonna be in Oldale for long friend we grab a bite and keep it moving that sound good?"

He breathed out a sigh of relief, glad that Miles's grasp on the region was a lot stronger and comprehensive than his. The last thing Basil wanted was to get lost in Hoenn, unsure where to go, where to visit, where to stop and rest and anything and everything related in between. Sure, the concept of them, being fresh, new trainers, embarking out on an exciting journey to see the world and discover themselves was an overused concept but ...
"It might be cliched but honestly it's the way that legends are born, right?" Basil proposed. He then blinked and rubbed his head. "Wow. That got really philosophical all of a sudden." He looked at Miles lazily. "Yeah, that plan sounds fine. I wasn't planning on staying in Oldale for long anyways." His attention drifted towards Gligar. "Do you have a name?" Basil asked, still curious. The scarred-up, pink bat stared at the dark-skinned human. Then, a single pincer pointed towards a single scar on his face, one that slashed over his right eye. "... Scar?" With a growl, the Johto Pokemon nodded. "Huh. Well, it's ... nice meeting you then!" Scar smirked; maybe this human wasn't so bad after all, even if he needed to whip him into shape.
Basil then glanced at Miles. "Are we almost to Oldale Town?"
The gligar introduces himself at Miles' request using its trainer himself as reference. He can't help but feel the pokemon's name matches his threatening appearance. All the while his own larva pokemon once again climbs up his body and now onto his. The pokemon's asleep in minutes.
"I hope so." A small smile rests easy on his already placid features as he gives another of his many already insouciant responses. He reaches for the pokegear buried deep in his pocket checking the time and any events in Oldale careful not to miss anything. "Yeah, you can kind of see it from here, but it's just over this hill." His stomach grumbles as they walk, now knowing he'll be stopping for more than just a latte, a waffle sounded beyond appetizing right now.
His thoughts wander to nicknames, Scar apparently came with his own so he couldn't help but think about the sleeping Larvesta on his head, perhaps he had his own nickname as well. When the pokemon awoke he'd ask, something he should have done at the start. He thinks about waking the pokemon, but he finds himself unable to do the deed. The little pokemon had an eventful day and a half, and so he'd let the pokemon rest easy now it was the least he could do.

"Really, we are that close?" He almost couldn't believe it. Due to his pessimistic nature, Basil always expected the worst of anything to happen. Then again, one couldn't blame him entirely; he had to put up with all sorts of ridiculous shit before. Narrowing his eyes, he peered towards the hill of interest, making an extra effort to quicken his pace so that they could finally reach civilization after how many hours of constant walking. "Come on, let's go. I'm getting sick of all of this walking." Little did Basil know that tons of walking was basically in the prerequisites of becoming a Champion. "You know, something to drink is sounding really good right now. Of course, nothing alcohol related; we have to remain sober so that we're "responsible trainers"," he joked, cracking a lazy grin.
"So we're responsible trainers now? bump that dude I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get a little faded when we get to Petalburg." It may be their first journey, but they aren't kids. this story wasn't one of twelve year olds just starting their journey and learning lessons on the way no, They were young men who were out to see and truly experience the world, not as children but as adults.
"I suppose if you're gonna be a champion it'd behoove you not to hit the bottle...too much at least." he pauses looking the man over for a moment, "Then again you'd be the perfect candidate don't drink, I'm gonna assume you don't smoke probably an honor student growing up." he nudges the man lightly a small laugh transforming into a cackle of sorts.
As he jokes he reaches the top of the hill he glances at the small town below he can see businesses open, and a number of people wander about the small town below. "It's known as the town, 'Where things start off scarce' or in other words a place of beginnings. He's eyes focus and he's serious for a moment. This is where it truly begun.
Miles's response earned a mellow grin from Basil. "Hey, at least you know what you want. That's half the battle right there." Images of Miles getting wasted popped up in his head; Basil proposed that he was most likely a "friendly" drunk. Then again, he tried to not avoid being around intoxicated people in the first place; they tested his patience. "Trust me, I don't plan on drinking anytime soon. That stuff is just not for me. Was I an honor student? ... I guess? I don't know. My grades were good enough." He shrugged his shoulders. After scaling the hill, Oldale came into view. It was a humble town, much smaller than the large cities that made up a majority of Unova.
"We're finally here," Basil sighed in relief. Scar strolled up next to him, peering down at the city; he had never been to Hoenn before either. The experience was just as new for him as it was for Basil. "Let's go. My feet are on fire." Miles Serran
As Miles moves onward he waits a bit longer overlooking the city. Almost as if fate called for it itself Larvesta wakes bathing in the suns rays. He remembers something he heard from the professor before leaving. 'Larvesta are said to be born from the sun...' as the bug pokemon sits up atop his head he picks it up with both hands. it's warm. like holding a small flame to his chest, a small flame that doesn't burn him almost as if his own sun is shining on him and him alone. He's decided on a name. "How about the name Sol. Do you like it?" The she shakes her head rapidly in the negative, and only now does he understand.
"How about Sol...a... Sola." he repeats it almost confirming it, only now does she nuzzle against her trainers chest. "Sola it is." The name is final as they both glance at the sun one final time before moving on. Truly the beginning of a journey.
