The beach festival had finally begun. People from all over Hoenn flocked to Petalburg City to join in on the fun. Trainers, Coordinators and Breeders came in droves, eager to prove themselves and reap in the benefits and rewards of the various tournaments and competitions springing up. After visiting the beach area for a little while, Basil moved towards the battling area. It was a large space reserved near the beach for the purpose of serving as an area for Pokemon battles. Getting into more battles was something that he wanted to do, especially considering how new he was to Pokemon training, and battles were one surefire way to gain more experience.
He wasn’t the only one who would benefit it. Scar had been bugging him for more battles ever since their first battle on Route 102. Growling, the eight foot tall, scarred Gliscor continuously nudged Basil with a giant pincer, urging him to find a battle so that the two could get to it. “Okay, okay!” Basil said, waving the Gliscor’s appendage off. “I’ll try to find a battle. Just -- … wait. How do you even find one?” The Gliscor shrugged his broad shoulders and began looking around for clues. Beachgoers stopped and stared as the massive purple bat lumbered along the beach.
Today was the day that Syndra had promised herself that she would get some training done. Despite all the festivities and the perfect weather for a lazy beach day, the female trainer had forced herself to mentally concentrate on her goal for the day: get stronger. So far in theory it had been going well. Her starting pokemon was by her side the entire day and which so far amounted to taking a long run around the entire city of Petalburg. Tiring as it was the girl figured that the exercise would help down the road somehow. Actually was rather impressed with her turtwig being able to keep pace with her. Yet Syndra could not keep herself away from the beach the entire day, much less forever, so decided to take a break and relax a bit by the beachside with her pokemon.
Without changing from her athletic attire to prevent herself from going into full fun in the sun mode, the girl walked at a moderate pace near the sands of the beach. Her eyes looked over the populated beach as she sipped her sports drink from her water bottle. No part of her was envious but more looking forward enjoying herself as well. That was when from the corner of her peripheral vision did she spot a giant hulking Gliscor and instantly her mind jumped to one person. "Basil?" she'd call out purposefully knowing after spotting the large pokemon that she was not wrong. Casually walking over with a friendly wave, she looked over the area in which he stood. "Ohhh the battle area. Who are you waiting on?"
As Scar continued to wade through the crowds of beachgoers, Basil remained where he was, watching it all unfold. He wasn’t absolutely savage; he knew not to attack people and Pokemon without a good reason. Despite popular belief, his reasons for openly attacking someone were morally sound … for a Pokemon. The whole Pidove incident back on Route 102 was simply because he was hungry; a Gliscor had to eat too! Still, the fact that humans were so appalled by his hunting habits confused the eight foot tall bat. How did they think wild carnivorous Pokemon sustained themselves?
Once Syndra spoke, Basil lazily looked over his shoulder. “Hey, Syndra,” he greeted, grinning. “I’m not waiting on anyone in particular. I heard that there was a battle area here so I decided to check it out.” He pointed towards the giant Gliscor a few meters away. “Scar’s been wanting to battle badly lately so … here we are.” Hopefully, he wouldn’t cause too much trouble; the Gliscor tended to get a little bit too into battles sometimes. “What about you? Were you planning on doing some battling?” Basil asked, curious. “If you were, perhaps we could battle.” It was a fair offer, was it not? “I’m not good though.” Yes, that would make the offer more enticing.
The girl had known about the battle area that the festival had set up but after all the battles that she had to fight on route 101, she didn't feel confident that she would win any of those battles. Battling strangers wasn't a big deal to the female but she would have wanted to get stronger a bit before entering any fights. Still when Basil explained that his Gliscor wanted to battle she nodded in understanding. "Oh really?" she'd say as her gaze moved to the large purple pokemon. "I'm not surprised that your Gliscor is in the mood to fight. It is a nice day." Thinking on her own pokemon, her's had not shown any strong desire or impulse to fight from what she noticed aside from first meeting a few. Not a true complaint by a long shot but it showed her the differences between ideals of pokemon.
When Basil offered to battle, she paused momentarily to think the offer over. A friendly battle would only help not hurt and while she still had ill memories of Basil's Gliscor eating that Pidove from route 102, she nodded. "I thought about battling later today but I'll fight you now if you want." She paused once again and quickly picked up her sentence. "As long as Scar doesn't try to kill my pokemon of course," she'd say just as insurance. She wasn't going to fight if her pokemon were going to be in danger from it. While Basil tried to assure that he was 'not good' she was skeptical of that considering the hulking Gliscor he owned. He had admitted he was new to training and stuff when they first met but even it was all true it would only make her feel worse if she lost this. Still she already agreed and had to swallow whatever competitive pride she currently as she looked down to her Turtwig. The grass type did not look too concerned and walked over to the center of the battle area as if to take his place there. Syndra found her way to where she was supposed to stand as well but soon a puzzled looked crossed her face. "Sooo who starts?"
Basil had avoided getting into trainer battles himself for the most part. The only one that he had was with Miles and even then, things got out of control quickly. Whenever battling was involved, Scar got excited, too excited. He always went in for the absolute knockout and to him, it didn't matter whether the Pokemon was wild or belonged to a trainer. If they challenged him, then they were obviously willing to accept the possible consequences. Had he killed Pokemon in the past? Yes, and he wasn't going to stop.
"Yeah, he's been bugging me all day to bring him here. So far, we haven't found anyone who wanted to battle yet," Basil said. "And Scar won't kill your Pokemon! I promise. That Pidove was ... different." Right, different. Scar had to eat too and Basil just let the dual-type hunt for his food. It definitely saved on food expenses; that was for sure. As soon as Basil waved to get Scar's attention, the giant, eight foot tall bat sprang up into the air, zipped through the air before landing with a loud, solid thud next to his trainer. "Well, we've got a battle for you. It's —" That's all Scar needed to hear. Without hesitation, he took his place on the battlefield, large yellow eyes staring down menacingly at the grass turtle. "I guess you can start—" Too late again. Scar swept a massive pincer forward with such force that a black, cackling shockwave erupted forward. It was a Knock Off, a move that tested to see if the Turtwig's reflexes were permitting. Blinking, Basil put a hand over his face in slight dismay.
The sudden attack caught the turtle off guard as he was flung backwards by the hit. Even if he had realized it was coming the slower pokemon wouldn't have been able to do anything about it anyway. The grass type got back to his feet quickly however and waited for instruction. "Don't let him have his way. Use absorb to regain whatever health you lost then use withdraw to brace for the next attack." Turtwig understood and the leaves on his head twitched a bit, trying to drain energy from the eight foot tall Gliscor. At the same time the grass type tried to hide any vulnerabilities it had by scrunching up its body in preparation for another surprise hit.
While Syndra wanted to believe Basil wouldn't allow his pokemon to kill her own, the fact that Scar didn't exactly seem to listen to him left her worried for Turtwig's sake. If there was any threat to her pokemon's life she'd recall the pokemon in a heartbeat.
Turtwig, grass-type (overgrow) Level 10
Just gonna go look back at the moves Turtwig has at level 10 real quick... Also as I said I'm gonna do short posts
A wide, shark-toothed grin grew on the Gliscor's face as his attack was a surefire hit. The Turtwig was slower than he was, even though the size difference between the two was utterly massive. Scar's strategy was to basically pressure the Turtwig constantly, enough to where the grass-type wouldn't have any opportunity or chance to recuperate or retaliate. As soon as Turtwig got hit by the attack, Scar was already pursuing him. His wings spread and he took to the air; he started to descend on the turtle, his massive shadow swallowing the Sinnoh starter up. That was when the Absorb came.
The force hit him and just like that, Scar felt energy leaving his body at an alarming rate. He snarled, gnashed his fangs and tried to shake the attack off. Turtwig would be able to get a respectable amount of health back from the attack, enough to repair some of his injuries. Enraged, Scar dive-bombed at the tortoise. Fire flashed within his fanged maw. Once he got close, he'd aim to grab and lift the Turtwig up before sinking his fire-covered, triangular teeth into him with a vicious Fire Fang.
That much should have been expected. Just as the grass type felt better the Gliscor swept down and took a flaming bite out of the turtle's body. He cried out in pain and just another of those attacks would cause the grass type to faint if nothing was done about it. The withdraw helped Turtwig withstand the fire attack but not for long. Unfortunately at this moment there was nothing Syndra could possibly do about this aside from fight back. "Use Absorb consecutively to try to recover that health you lost." Again the turtwig drained the gliscor of its energy. This time longer than before to recover twice as much. It seemed effective before enough to rile the creature. Just in case the female trainer had Turtwig's pokeball in her hand, ready and waiting to recall in case of danger.
Holy shit, that Fire Fang looked painful. Basil winced visibly, face twisting. "Scar. Scar!" He called out to get the Gliscor's attention. The bat's, red striated ears twitched; the partial flying-type was able to hear his trainer clearly, despite the Turtwig's cries of agony. "Don't overdo it. Please." The desperation in Basil's voice was obvious; he didn't want Turtwig to die or get mutilated or anything like that.
Surprisingly, Scar acted within Basil's wishes. Pincers still wrapped around the Turtwig, the Gliscor's fanged mouth was clamped around the grass-type like a beartrap. That made avoiding the Absorb next to impossible. Growling in clear pain, the Gliscor felt the Turtwig robbing his energy, his vitality, his life; it infuriated him. Changing gears, the flames within the Gliscor's mouth changed to blistering-cold ice. It was an Ice Fang, one that aimed to snuff out the absorbing energies and replace the scalding heat with burning cold. Thankfully, Scar wasn't trying to kill Turtwig; that much in itself was a massive improvement.
It was too much to take. The grass type felt the icy hot pain and rather than making him feel better it made him feel worse. Not wanting to watch him suffer anymore Syndra pointed her pokeball to her Turtwig. "Return," she called out as a stream of light engulfed the poor grass type. With that the girl crossed her arms in front of her in an X formation to show that she was out. It pained her and her pride but it was about what she expected to come out of this. With that in mind she gave a smile over to Basil, "You win this time but I'll pay you back for this defeat in full." She meant that but the way she said it almost sounded as if it was said jokingly. "That said Scar is rather impressive... hopefully he'll keep trying not to kill pokemon." She paused "Or at least my pokemon."
The Gliscor's white, shark-like teeth gnashed together with an audible snap. Blinking, Scar looked down at his now empty pincers, confused. Where did the Turtwig go? His large, topaz-colored eyes flickered towards Syndra; the girl was recalling her beloved starter back into his Pokeball. Ah, so that explained it. Huffing, the eight foot tall, purple bat lumbered back towards his trainer, eyes wide with excitement. "Um. Good job, Scar?" Basil said, rubbing the back of his neck. The Gliscor smiled extremely wide, displaying his shiny, pointy chompers. He actually made Basil proud for once! This was truly an amazing accomplishment, one that Scar would remember for years to come.
"I'm sure you'll beat me very soon," the twenty-three year old admitted, running a hand through his shaggy mess of hair. He was surprised to hear Syndra compliment Scar. Most thought he was just a psychotic, murderous beast, the textbook definition of a monster. "You think so? Thanks, your — ... um—" Shit, what was her Pokemon called again? "... Your Turtwig is really nice too. That's what it's called, right?" He still hadn't gotten used to identifying Pokemon correctly. "He — ... Okay, Scar just hunts from time to time. It's much easier to let him do that than worry about buying Pokemon food for him." With that, Basil looked at the Gliscor. Scar immediately gave a large, sharp-toothed smile, eyes narrowed mischievously. Basil frowned. "See, what I mean? He's not bad, honest." As if on cue, Scar gave the most cutesy, innocent look his terrifying and intimidating self could pull off. Basil couldn't help but crack a smile. "At least he has a good sense of humor."
The effort that Basil made in an attempt to remember her pokemon's name was admirable but made Syndra release a mild laugh. She hid her laughter behind her raised hand. While she was still concerned about what she saw previously and Scar's proven behavior, it wasn't her place to tell someone else how to raise their own pokemon. "Yes, my pokemon was a Turtwig," she responded initially as she clipped her pokeball back onto the belt around her waist. When it came to Scar's eating habits Basil did try to defend them. She wasn't so sure it wasn't against the laws of pokemon but it wasn't her problem either. "As long as it is in reasonable doses and you don't get into trouble then who am I to complain?" she commented whimsically as the gliscor made the strangest expression she had ever seen. Mirroring Basil a smile appeared on Syndra's face despite what had just happened, a larger smile than the one that appeared naturally from all her laughing. "So what's the plan now Basil? Going to try to find more battles?"
"Oh, don't worry. I won't let him eat the entire Pokemon population of Hoenn or anything like that," Basil reassured. He was half joking and half serious; he was certain that if he had the opportunity, Scar would eat up a whole bunch of Pokemon without any hesitation. The Gliscor chuckled, amused by how the two humans viewed him. He wasn't that bad as a Pokemon! Hell, to him, there were plenty of Pokemon way worse than him! Those Pokemon went out of their way to attack humans and even eat them at times! "Wait. Scar, do you eat humans?" Basil abruptly asked his starter. Scar blinked before giving the most, evil bloodthirsty look and smile he could. The twenty-three year old frowned heavily before looking back at Syndra. "... There's no way he actually eats people, right?" It was a pitiful attempt at self-reassurance. Scar laughed hard in that deep ass voice of his; oh man, messing with Basil was too much fun.
"What's the plan? I'm not sure. I think that I'm going to try to catch a Pokemon or two. I haven't attempted any of that catching business yet," the newbie trainer explained. "Then, after that, I might challenge the Petalburg Gym or the Rustboro Gym. I'm not sure. The thing is that I'm not too informed about either of the gyms. What do you know about them? Are you planning to get badges yourself?"
The interaction between Basil and Scar were both entertaining and frightening to witness. It was always the most unexpected of things that sparked between the two so Syndra could only keep her warm smile even though they were talking about if Scar ate humans. It was a viable question but not one that was actually clearly answered. Maybe they would see down the line. When the darker toned man did answer her about his plans she gave an acknowledging nod. Aside from training and enjoying the event she gave no thought into what to do afterwards.
Catching sounded like a good idea. She had done some back on an early route on the way. It was surprising that the male hadn't caught anything yet. Then the subject of gyms came up and instantly the female was alert. "Oh the gyms," she said as if just remembering that the gyms existed. She had studied the gyms of hoenn before coming to the region but that was all on paper. Syndra herself had no interaction with any of them yet. She wasn't even sure if she should plan to except to keep up with all the other trainers to prove her worth. "To be honest I never really thought about it... but I know about them. The Petalburg gym leader uses normal types and the Rustboro one uses rock types. That's pretty much all I know."
Her jade green eyes drifted off into the sky and realized the time it was. Turning to Basil she gave an apologetic look. "Sorry but I'll have to go soon. I have plans and I still need to drop by the pokemon center to have Turtwig checked up on, but we can catch up later if you're up for it?"
Basil seriously hoped that Scar was lying, that he truly didn't eat humans. If the Gliscor did snack on people, then Basil would have another thing to worry about; he'd have to somehow keep track of how many times the Gliscor went hunting and to make sure that he wasn't out trying to gobble up the entire population of a nearby city or town.
"The Petalburg Gym's a Normal-Type gym while the Rustboro Gym specializes in Rock-Types? Hmm ..." Well, Scar was partially a ground-type meaning that he would have an advantage when it came to the Rustboro Gym. Normal-types weren't at an advantage or disadvantage when pitted against ground or flying-types. "I'm not sure which gym I'll challenge first. Maybe the Rustboro Gym?" He still hadn't made his decision but it wasn't like he had to make it right at this moment. "Oh! Right. Your Turtwig!" Basil had almost forgotten about the poor, injured Pokemon. "Alright, I won't hold you any longer. Thanks for the heads-up about the gyms. I'll be making my way to Rustboro if you wanted to meet up there." A pause. "... Oh, and ... sorry about your Turtwig..."
