As she promised, it didn't take long for Syndra to make it back to route 102. In fact it hadn't been for the tag along then she might have actually loitered a bit. Aside from the brief visit to the Oldale store to stock up on simple supplies there had been no detours. It had been quiet for awhile however so Syndra decided to spur along a conversation. The girl would glance back over her shoulder to Sylvester as she spoke, "So what are your plans?" she would ask curiously. She'd slowly turn around and begin walking backwards, being careful not to walk into anything as she did. "Are you trying to reach the champion or become famous maybe?" Now maybe she was wrong but Sylvester didn't seem like the type that wanted to get famous but he did have an Eevee, a fact that still made the girl jealous, so the possibility was there.
"I definitely don't want to become famous, that's for sure." Perhaps she could tell by now, but all the way from Route 101, Sylvester had been relatively quiet. If it weren't for Marley, the Eevee currently sitting atop his head, Syndra probably wouldn't have noticed Sylvester tagging along behind her. The crying out and yawning was the evident reminder she had a traveling companion along with her for the journey.
"You could say I am trying to reach the champion." After all, it was every trainer's dream to one day face Hoenn's one true champion. "Though, I have other plans. Have you heard of Team Aqua and Team Magma?" It was a pretty straightforward question, and provided she knew something about them Sylvester could divulge further what exactly these future plans of his were.
At the swift denial of wanting to be famous she laughed lightly. Indeed she had noticed that Sylvester had been quiet but mostly chalked it up to being a quiet guy. Though he did give some interest in saying he was aiming to reach the champion, he added he had other plans. Intrigued, Syndra gave a small "oh-ho?" sound as she paid attention to his next few choice of words. The names of the two groups, Team Aqua and Team Magma, were fairly familiar to anyone that lived in the Hoenn region. While Syndra herself was not really a native, she studied the region enough to know their names. She also knew enough to know that she didn't want to join either group. Nevertheless the names made her cock a brow in half interest half bewilderment, "I've heard of them. They aren't in great standing with each other as their beliefs clash." That was at least the basics. She neglected to add that she had a nasty run in with a team magma member when she first started her journey and she only recognized it as such due to the symbol on the uniform. But why would Sylvester care about those teams she would wonder. "Why? What about them?"
"They're pretty notorious for their criminal activities..." Sylvester began to feel a faint wave of emotion coming over him, as he felt very personal about the issue. Down to his very core, the trainer inside him wanted to bring them to their knees, to beg for mercy—his mercy. "I want to put an end to those activities." His voice stern and unrelenting, he resumed following Syndra, doing his best not to let her see the expression on his face—complete disgust.
"Unfortunately, the acts of one will never sum up to that of many. Before I can take a step towards my plans, I need to become a better trainer. Someone who gets along well with others." Sylvester spoke as if his influence now meant little to nothing. And truthfully, he wondered about that. Just as much as he wondered about Syndra—specifically what she thought about his goal. "I aspire as much because I believe pokemon deserve better than being treated like creatures whom fight for our own benefit." Sylvester lured Marley into his arms once more with another of his treats, as to comfort his nerves.
"What about you, Syndra? What are your plans as a trainer?" His eyes stared at the back of her head, anticipating her response anxiously.
Instantly the mood became tense as the man spoke on the two controversial teams. Syndra felt it as if passing her hand through pudding but said nothing on it as she kept her pace while watching her company. Obviously the subjest was a major one so the girl didn't take what he said lightly. Still it was hard to watch. He did say he wanted to end their existence which was a powerful statement one way or another. Now Syndra didn't have much of an opinion one way or another but for now delving into Sylvester's past didn't seem like the best course of action. Even though he tried to hide his expression from her, Syndra noticed it enough. Her brothers used to do the same thing and as the older sister it was her job to read and look between the lines. Before anything else could be said however Sylvester wrapped up his thoughts on the matter with becoming a better trainer. Getting along with people. While the green haired girl understood that, the passion in which he held didn't transfer over to her.
"I agree that pokemon should be treated like equals. They aren't some puppets that we control," her eyes would glance back to her Turtwig who was following by Syndra closely to make sure she didn't trip or anything. When she first received turtwig it was such a great feeling to have a partner and start her adventure. She didn't know that others thought of pokemon like tools at all. The concept baffled her. "Back where I came from, pokemon were scarcely seen. So while I want to be a great trainer and all, I understand your sentiment entirely." Soon enough her question was reflected back to her to which she tried to lighten the mood with a laugh. Comparatively her plans were but lofty ideals which fit for the whimsical girl. "Sorry to say that my dreams aren't as great as yours. My plans as a trainer is just to see new sights and enjoy my journey with my pokemon. It's my first one and I want to see everything I can with what Hoenn has to offer."
"No, you're wrong. Your goal is not determined as great by anyone other than yourself." He patiently continued walking along the route with Syndra, looking at the forest and vegetation around them that had been inhabited by wild pokemon. Fortunately, none of them sought to pay the two trainers much attention. "Personally, I wish I had a goal like your's." The added strain in his voice was even more obvious than before. "It's not like I want to bring them harm for no reason."
Sylvester played with the ears of his Eevee, acknowledging just how much joy was produced from the minor sign of affection he displayed. "But I have seen abused pokemon, and it sickens me. Perhaps they are not exactly like us, but they have families—feelings, just like us." Sylvester looked over to Syndra, delving deeper into what he had meant to imply.
"If they are willing to do that to pokemon for their benefit, I can't help but think of how much further they'd be willing to go if one day they found out it wasn't enough. Would they enslave their own kind? Could they damn the likes of themselves for such a small payout?" Letting go of Marley, the pokemon hopped onto the ground with excitement as the outline of what appeared to be a large town broke over the treeline.
"Maybe it's 'cause I grew up rich, and they feel they have it so hard they need to take such drastic action. I can't help but shake the feeling their existence is wrong on so many levels. But that doesn't matter. It looks like we're here, if this is where we are supposed to be anyway?"
Again did Syndra give a lighthearted laugh. This was more talking than Sylvester made the entire trip to Petalburg. His passion for the topic of his goals were obvious, revealing reason upon reason for his apparent hate towards the other groups. It was something that she was going to keep in mind for the future but not something she was going to take to heart until she saw it. "You seem to have your mind set and yourself unwavering," she commented to the side. She noticed the eevee jump to the ground and her own Turtwig cried out to signal that the female trainer should stop walking backwards and turn back around. It seemed like her temporary travel companion realized it also as in the midst of his speech he pointed the place out. There was a nod and a smile as more buildings came into view from the dirt road they traveled upon. "Yeah this is the place. I told you it didn't take very long," she said as she stretched out her arms.
Part of her was happy that they made it so fast as Syndra wasn't sure how to respond to Sylvester's passion about taking out the two solidified teams of the region. It was not as if she had any intention of joining either so it didn't matter to her much one way or the other what happened to them. "As I said I understand your reason but be careful you don't get into too much trouble that you can't handle." While Syndra did say she had needed to come back here, it was more out of necessity to try to leave the area and make her way to Rustboro soon. The festival was coming to an end and at the thought of it, she lifted her right hand and cast it in the direction of route 104. "I know you might be tired but I think you should make a dash to the beach to see if you can catch a bit of luck and the end of the festival."
"No need to worry about that." A soft smile etched itself across his face as he stoody by Syndra, getting ready to part ways. "I know how to lay low. I won't be taking any action against them anytime soon. You can count on it." His Eevee turned around, looking up to Sylvester and then to Syndra. Marley could probably tell it was around the time they went their separate ways.
"Well, thanks a lot for all of your help. Maybe some day we'll meet again. Until then..." As he began walking in the direction she had pointed, Sylvester gently placed his off-hand on her shoulder as a friendly gesture. "Take care of you and your pokemon. See you around, Syndra." With that he let go, keeping his back to the girl as he wasn't one to show much affection or anything like it. Inside though, if one were able to peer within Sylvester, they could tell his excitement and hope in the world of trainers had been re-instilled. Making way towards the festival, Sylvester held out his pokeball and retrieved his Eevee Marley. There were likely to be crowds of people, and the trainer did not want his only precious pokemon to get lost.
