■ what doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Fidel looked back at Oldale Town with a sigh.[break][break]
She should have known that so many people would feel badly for her, especially after being told of the implications of starting with a Magikarp. No damaging moves unless she did the unthinkable, no supporting moves unless she did the unthinkable. Still, though the empathy from all these people was sweet at first, it was starting to get annoying when people told her she should just get another Pokemon and turn back. Every time she told somebody "I just have a Magikarp", they looked at her with pity, and, rarely, amusement.[break][break]
Amusement, she understood. Yeah, okay, start with the worst, whatever. That just meant she'd prove them wrong one day, and she'd work hard to prove them wrong. But pity just made her mad, because it didn't come from a bad place, and yet she needed to prove them wrong too! She knows about how terrible her situation is; she's got literal scars to prove it. But... no matter how stupid she was, she wasn't going to give up on Magikarp like they said she should![break][break]
So when she left Oldale Town, she saw it as a chance to breathe freely, have a moment for herself. Train Magikarp. She knew Pokemon dodged and moved around and used the environment, or, at least, she suspected based on what she'd do if she were a Pokemon. She'd just train Magikarp that way, and make him better in battle that way. Who needs moves, anyways?[break][break]
With a convicted heart, she went on the path to Petalburg, looking for anyone resembling a Trainer. She'd rather not practice with wild Pokemon, who knows what they'll do with her once they're done with Magikarp. At least trainers knew how to hold back. Humans preferred to attack with their words, and not with their fists... She knew this from experience. As terrible as it might make her feel at first, it was the better option.[break][break]
Sighting somebody, she approached him with a stern expression on her face. "Hey, excuse me. Could you battle me with your weakest Pokemon?" Despite her initial steeling of her courage, her eyes wandered to the side, and she grew a ghost of a blush due to her embarrassment. "I only have a Magikarp, but I really want to train it, so..."

"Fuck these towns man, seriously one boring place after another, when the hell am I gonna find somewhere I can actually fuckin' enjoy myself." Darius muttered under his breath quite angrily. Darius had just waltz right through Oldale town, not a single person talked to him, hell the Nurse Joy didn't even, she just took his fucking Pokémon, didn't even fucking ask him, healed them up and quickly handed them back moving onto the next person. "Some rude ass people, then again who am I to talk?" He added, taking out a cigarette, lighting it and then placed it in between his lips. "Tch. . . I don't like this one bit so far."
Darius stood idle in the middle of the route, he didn't really have any motivation whatsoever to move on at all. He just smoked to relieve all his anger and stress. "I need something to do, this route is lame and probably has stupid looking Pokémon like the one before it." He sighed looking around for any rustling grass. "Like that stupid fucking bird that came out of the sky. What the fuck was that all about. That was random as hell." Darius paused exhaling the smoke from his cigarette. "And that god damn Ghost that tried to scare me, that wasn't scary at all. Good thing Gible put these mofos in there place."
Suddenly Darius heard a voice, it sounded as if it was coming from a mouse. "The fuck is that squeaking?" He said and looked around, before turning around to see the tiniest little girl he'd ever seen. "Holy shit you're a munchkin." He added cutting her off completely and exhaled the smoke from his cigarette again. He then grabbed her by the shoulders and picked her up to make eye contact with her.
"The hell did you say? I couldn't hear you from down there."

Huh? Was he lost in his own thoughts? She looked up at the tall man, trying to gain his attention by raising her voice a little. He was a little vulgar, and he smoked... maybe she shouldn't have messed with this guy. She took a step back, hoping she could react in time if he tried anything other than battle her, but before she noticed, her feet were dangling two feet off the ground and she was eye-to-eye with the man.[break][break]
Woah. WOAH. This guy was picking her up! Bad touch, bad touch! "Hey, I just want a battle with your weakest Pokemon! Why'd you pick me up?" She tried to wiggle her way out of there, and her face reflected all but alarm and panic. If a six foot something guy just picks you up, it was just a bad time! She tried to push the guy's arms away, but her burnt-up arms didn't have enough power.[break][break]
Man, was this guy a hulking mass of muscle and dying liver? Who even has the time to get this type of build before they were forty, anyways?! Fidel struggled a bit more, saying little grunts and phrases to herself. "I'm just a girl with a Magikarp," and "I've already gotten beat up once," and "Why does everyone like hitting little girls?!" were amongst them.[break][break] "After this, I gotta learn a fighting move to protect myself. Like the ones on wrestling, those are cool..." She mumbled under her breath, giving a single push of all her might to get out of his arms. Close, but no dice. She finally stopped struggling and just resigned to her fate, looking at the big man with a defeated glow in her eyes. [break][break]

Darius tilted his head and shook her up and down lightly. "Whoa. . . You're really tiny. . ." He muttered and then let out a puff a smoke to the side. How could some be this tiny? And how could someone so tiny be wandering on their own? Was she even old enough to be out here by herself? Suddenly Darius snapped back to his senses. "What was I doing again? Who the hell are you?" He asked extremely confused, he probably should lay off the weed for a while. . . nah let's not do that.
The Girl then began talking to Darius. "Hey, I just want a battle with your weakest Pokemon! Why'd you pick me up?"
"Oh, shit sorry kid. Sure we can battle." Darius replied, though he wasn't really sorry, he really didn't care in all honesty. Slowly he placed down the little girl after she mumbled a few things to herself and tried to escape herself with much struggle, but there's no way she could do that Darius was amazingly strong, and had a really nice death grip. He then knelt down to the girls eye level and began talking to her again.
"Are you allowed to be out here all alone? You could get attacked by a Pokémon or someone creepy." He said and thought about his past for a brief moment. "Whatever, let's just battle I guess." He added standing up and taking a few steps backwards, till there was a decent amount of space between them.
"One Pokémon each side, no items? Seem good to you kid?"
She never really pondered that question for long. The legal age for being a Trainer and traveling was ten years old, and it always was ten years old. Unless they changed it, in which case, she never heard it. Though... why did they let ten year olds out into the world? Whatever, she wasn't gonna question it. Her adventure wasn't ending because of a legal amendment today![break][break]
"Expect to win, guy. I just want to teach Magikarp how to dodge." She gave the man fair warning, but this almost seemed like a mental preparation for herself. Her objective here was to teach Magikarp how to do non-attacks well, not to win. She never intended to win this fight; she knows she'll lose. She just wants to get better in whatever way possible, even if it meant beating herself and Magikarp into the ground on purpose.[break][break]
She's just gotta have faith that Magikarp can take hits and learn from them. That's what that nice lady said! That's the lesson she had to learn through her scars, and she isn't gonna forget that lesson within the same month that she learned it. That'd just be ignorant, and as amateur as Fidel knew she was, she wasn't gonna be an idiot about it.[break][break] "Right, okay. Magikarp, do your best!" She said, bringing out the orange fish Pokemon. Sadly, again, there was no large body of water, so Magikarp went flopping about on the land. "We're just... gonna see how long we last, okay, Magikarp? We just gotta do our best to survive." She said, trying to swallow a lump in her throat.[break][break]
It still stung, knowing Magikarp couldn't do anything to protect itself. But as she said what their plan was, Magikarp seemed to flop more energetically, almost as if enthusiastic to do it's best. Yeah... yeah, that'd work. She felt a little better about herself now, and tried to tune out the world around her. Any hurtful words the man said, she tuned out. All that mattered was that she and Magikarp did her best. "...Ready when you are."

Darius sighed, he wasn't going to enjoy beating up a little girl. It just wasn't his thing, but whatever he was going to make this as short and painful as possible, he reached deep inside his maroon pea coat's pocket and pulled a bright and shiny red Pokéball. "Alrightly let's get this over with now." He said as he let out some smoke from his cigarette. "Go Gible!" He said lobbing the Pokéball high into the air, it popped opened midair releasing the red lightning-like light that would materialize into the Land Shark Pokémon. "Looking good as usual." He commented on his Pokémon's appearance.
He glanced over to his opponent's side of the field with a raised eyebrow. "The fuck are you doing? Aren't fish suppose to be in the water." He said and sighed again, can't give kids Pokémon these days. "Doesn't matter me to me, just matters if my Gible wins." Darius added and exhaled smoke from his mouth again. "Gible used Dragon Rage twice!" He barked and his Gible nodded stomping its foot vigorously onto the ground. Suddenly it would shoot out a purple flamed fire ball at the Magikarp, followed up by another one. "That should be it, unless the lack of water kills that thing first."
Sand Veil - Lv.12 - Healthy Gible used Dragon Rage! Gible used Dragon Rage again!
"Magikarp, try to avoid those attacks!" She commanded. Her initial vigor and vibe from the beginning of her adventure was gone. She was still as youthful as ever, but not as obnoxious about it. More... concentrated. More focused. Maybe it's her trying to ignore the oncoming reality that Magikarp was going to faint again, and she was going to lose again. It was better than her wallowing in sadness, that's for damn sure.[break][break]
Magikarp simply had one eye to the sky and the other eye to the ground under it, flopping about as per usual. It seemed almost inevitable that the Dragon Rage would hit it. Fidel winced. She really hated fire, she absolutely hated any move that looked like fire. Well, not hate, but it made her cringe heavily. Subconsciously, she rubbed her hand on the crevasses of dying skin on her burned arm. Hopefully, she won't be so sensitive about it in the future.[break][break]
However, Magikarp looked forward in those last moments before the first fireball hit, and it jumped. The Dragon Rage barely whiffed it's skin, and the angle it had when flopping off the ground made it spin. For the tiniest moment, it looked at Fidel, and Fidel looked at Magikarp, and she knew that Magikarp was somehow saying "it's okay if I get hurt". And this made her feel just that tiny bit better about doing this.[break][break]
The second fireball hit straight on, and Magikarp fell to the dirt lifelessly. Still alive, but it's scales were thoroughly burnt. Fidel had a solemn look on her face; not quite a frown, not quite anger, but an understanding of what had to be done. Taking her Poke Ball out of her pocket, she returned Magikarp to safety, nothing but the most minimal of emotions on her face.[break][break]
"Thank you for your time." Fidel said, and it almost sounded like a grown woman saying it. So much solidarity in her voice, and yet there was that echo of weariness that struck in any who would have heard it. She gave a deep bow to the man, her eyes not coming up once to peek at him from her subservient gesture. If he had any last words, he should say them now. Otherwise, she would be walking to the nearest Pokemon Center as quickly as possible.

Normally Darius would gloat, or express extremely egocentrism when he won a battle, but this time he didn't feel anything at all, not happiness, not sorrow, no pity, nothing. He beckoned his Gible over to him to give in a nice rub on the head, though she'd much rather nip his fingers. She was a violent fella, but Darius was attached to the Pokémon, never raising his hand at it, or his voice unless it was an order in a battle. He sighed and returned the Pokémon back inside its Pokéball. "Nice job Gal."
He looked up towards Fidel, she didn't seem to show much emotion, in fact she probably felt the same way as Darius right now, pretty fucking callous. He took the cigarette out of his mouth threw it onto the floor and smashed it under his foot. Darius than slowly proceeded to walk over to the child, without making a noise.
"Thank you for your time." He heard her squeak, not in her tiny girl voice, but in the voice of a mature woman, before she started bowing towards him.
"No problem Kid." He said in response, something about this situation made him smile though. He bowed back to her and then stood up tall. "Do you mind if I walk you to the next town, no wild Pokémon or trainer will bother you with a guy like me around." Darius offered, he would never do this, but this time he'd make an exception for a personal reason.
She raised from her bow, pleasantly surprised at what the man offered. She didn't expect this. The last time her Magikarp was seared in flames, she ended up with pain and rather choice words from opposing trainer. Not really... this. She suspected he wasn't of the pleasant type, judging by how strange he was acting before the battle, but now, she was having a few doubts about that.[break][break]
She supposed that some people could find it in themselves to be nice for a bit, even if it was for a personal reason. She couldn't possibly think that this man offered to help her out of the blue; he didn't seem the type, and she wasn't inclined enough to believe that the ideal of 'don't judge a book by it's cover' would fit this situation. Not yet, at least. Still, it was help, it was very much appreciated, and she wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth.[break][break]
"I would appreciate it, sir. I'm just on my way to Petalburg." She said, giving a polite smile. They'd both know it was polite for the sake of being polite; the twelve-year old wasn't that amazing in social interaction. Still, it showed her appreciation. Or, she thought it would. She didn't know this man enough to know how he reacted to different things, only that he was a weird guy who picked up people when he couldn't see them.[break][break]
She paused before adding a bit more, just to be courteous. "I hope it's not too out of the way for you..." Fidel trailed off quietly, but it sounded right, in a way. Perhaps it was her recent encounters, or perhaps it was something else, but she didn't exactly act like a protagonist, did she? She's read a few books and comics, seen her Saturday cartoons, so she's a bit genry-savvy about these things. Or, she fancies herself genre-savvy, but really just likes to characterize herself as one of the fantasy characters in her imagination.[break][break]
Supposedly, she's supposed to be the spunky protagonist. Energetic, loud, a bit obnoxious, with a trusty cute Pokemon with hidden potential at her side. But... it's nothing like that. She's gotten hurt before the adventure even started, and her Pokemon is a Magikarp. She's determined, she guesses, but she doesn't yell it from the rooftops. Just goes to show that things don't turn out the way the stories make them out to be.[break][break]
Oh well. With that, she started her hike towards Petalburg, with a jaded six-foot-something smoker on her trails.

Darius simply waited for her response, she seemed to be really lost in thought currently and he didn't really want to make her lose her train of thought so he continued to wait till she replied. Darius crackled his knuckles as he waited patiently. He was thinking of the person he met before in Littleroot Town, how he hated those goody two shoe hero types, he hoped this girl wasn't one of those.
"I would appreciate it, sir. I'm just on my way to Petalburg." She finally answered and Darius nodded. "Alright, let's get a move on then I don't want to be out too late at night." He replied staring at the sun which was currently setting. He still didn't show much emotion, not even usually anger, he felt pretty dead. I hope it's not too out of the way for you..." Fidel added and Darius shook his head. "Nah, don't worry kid, I'm on my way there too. I hope it's better than those last two shitholes, Oldale Town and Littleroot town."
After that Darius and the little girl were on their way to the next town, which Darius hoped they'd get too soon. If Sylvester saw him out here being all nice to some random girl he'd never hear the end of it most likely. God he hated that bastard.
