It had become a sort of trend for them to meet spontaneously as though transcending the fact that Hoenn was a huge region and they both had obviously diverging goals. They'd always see each other somewhere or somehow and recognize each other instantly either from the little patch of red hair or from the easily distinguishable hipster glasses, and then they'd proceed to handshake or fist bump or whatever, and then they'd undoubtedly start talking.
For those reasons, Julius wasn't even surprised when it happened again, and some moments later he was sitting on a delicate little white chair that belonged to the many that were a part of the collection of furniture at the Rustboro Central Park's rooftop garden. Across from is was Andrea, and they both had menus in front of them, again quite not sure how that had happened but it had.
Either way, Julius was looking over boredly at the items, wondering what kind of ridiculously outrageous conversation Andrea would bring up. Surprisingly enough, she seemed better at it than him. Although he didn't mind, the only thing he regretted was that he'd end up getting that terrible accent rubbed off on him again.
andrea was scanning the menu, carefully eyeing the prices and appreciating that the meals were offered at a cheap price. her pocket was still lacking, but, ever since she took up training, the cash was slowly trickling in. andrea had enough to casually spend on rare occasions. but she was obviously far away from being rich. the coordinator would climb her way up, eventually.
"so, um."
she had been avoiding this topic for a while now. the girl was stumped - unsure of how to reveal the events that had occurred only a week ago. it was an awkward subject - but she wasn't embarrassed, no. she was just unsure of how julius would react to behavior.
"so..."
whelp. there was no real point in making this anymore complicated. she was sure by now that the man just wanted her to open her mouth and say whatever the fuck she had to say.
"i got drunk and fucked the guy who hit ya."
she said this in an absurdly casual tone, her gaze still traveling across the menu's contents.
that wasn't too hard.
"oh, man, they have some pretty wicked salads here. ya gonna get one?"

In the deepest pits of his mind he wondered if he shouldn't have wondered what kind of topic the coordinator would bring up. While she hesitated, Julius eyed her carefully, eyebrows arching up and moving around once in while, silently telling her he was interested. Not so much what it was but why it would make Andrea hesitate. She didn't seem like the kind to hesitate.
Julius decided to get himself comfortable and reached out for the glass of water laid in front of him. He nearly choked when she did tell him what it was, sputtering and coughing until he finally managed to breathe normal again. "You what?" He asked, half confused and half making sure he hear her right. He stared at her incredulously with how she proceeded with casual talk, and shook his head slightly.
"Good to know," he said, sarcasm evident in his tone. He said the words before deciding what to think- it was easier to speak first and let the truth sink in so it didn't seem like it mattered much. But did it? Julius wasn't sure. The words she said didn't make him annoyed, or sad, but he couldn't deny the uncomfort that came with them.
It felt like a rapist had screwed around with his kid sister, and the thought of it made him shift the weight of one thigh to the other and blink a little, trying to fall back into the net of small talk Andrea had provided.
"Ahh, maybe. Definitely cheaper, that's for sure." He nodded absently minded, trying to look at the menu, but found himself looking at Andrea every other second. "Yeah I'll go with salad."
their salads were ordered - their menus returned to their waiter - and the uncomfortable silence that followed interrupted by the frowning andrea.
"julius, bro," she breathed. "i didn't mean ta. it just happened. ya know?"
she managed a small shrug, unsure of how to prevent a conflict between the two. julius was her bro, and he deserved to know the truth. the coordinator was sure he appreciated the knowledge, but she still kept a few more details under wraps. like the part about having liam's contact information, or that their sexual encounter had occurred more than once. what made this more difficult was due to her proclaiming herself homosexual - which she was 100% sure she had been before they even met. but somethin' about liam, and even julius, riled a primal need within her that she could not resist.
"yer not mad at me, right?"
something rare entered her tone. a softness. a rare show of worry as she felt guilt gnaw at the corners of her mind. andrea's cerulean gaze reflected her concern.
"yer - ah - yer not gonna do nothin' 'bout him, right? ya know he's dangerous."
she didn't want julius getting hurt. not like that. not again. that shit had upset her the last time. thankfully, he hadn't witnessed her stress about the whole thing.

After that was done, after he was done with the speaking and the reacting, he could finally think a bit about this. What really hurt was that Andrea had proclaimed herself totally gay and had more than happily showed that fact off several times along the way. He didn't know, was he jealous? The waiter left and the awkward silence had no reason to exist any more, but it persisted until Andrea broke it.
He looked up from the food at her, and then she started getting a softer, apologetic tone that just didn't seem right. It wasn't supposed to work like this and he'd be damned if he let something awkward ruin what they had going together. For the first time in a long time he felt the need to protect a relationship, a person.
He was determined to tell her it was okay, that he didn't really care, maybe crack a joke about it all or tease her or something. But then what she said at the end of it all made a flicker of anger cross his eyes and his face as he moved his arms to the table.
"That's what I'm supposed to be saying," he said, trying not to speak loudly for fear that people would look towards their table, but his tone coming out louder anyway. "Andrea, look, he...His name's Rory, first of all. And from what I know, he's in team aqua. And I know he's freaking dangerous. You need to stay away ah--I mean," He pauses and then the serious wall finally breaks as he lets out a laugh, unable to help himself. Andrea and Rory together! It was, shortest to say, hilarious to imagine.
"I mean, are you sure it wasn't an underage-rape case or something?" The little jeering twinkle in his eyes had suddenly returned, as he fully expected to be hit in kind by Andrea who probably would not be amused. Or maybe she would be. He never knew with her, and that was some of the magic, he supposed.

"fucker."
andrea's face went red, her cheeks puffing up as she glared at the older male. of course julius would allow that kinda shit to come out of his mouth. she tore into her salad after proceeding to drown it in her favorite dressing.
"i'm fuckin' eighteen, i can do what i want."
she muttered this more to herself than to him. she'd be nineteen... in a couple of months. but that shit didn't matter. her age had nothin' to do with it, anyway. biting down onto the solid material of her fork, the girl eyed the male curiously.
"how's yer team? that rotom of yers still kickin' ass and takin' names?"
andrea grinned at the memory of her defeat. that little electric-type packed a punch. perhaps one day she could combat that. nah, she could. no doubt.
"oh, yeah," she murmured. "that egg ya traded fer - how is it doin'? it hatch yet? mine has. she's a real champion in the makin', ya know?"
her sneasel was a mischievous little thing, and often sought out her mistress's attention. she was still a baby, after all.

His smile went wider as Andrea reddened up, enjoying seeing her annoyed and flustered. But then she said she was eighteen and he had to giggle at how school-girly her defensiveness was. He shook his head happily, glad they got over the worst of Andrea's revelation. He was chewing at the same time as Andrea, and found himself wiping his mouth politely before speaking. It was strange how old habits persisted, and his mom had been immensely strict with table manners.
"Of course," he said. "And your froakie as tough as nails still?" He was grinning too, except for him it was the memory of victory. He wondered though, how would they fare against each other now? It would be interesting to test out, no doubt.
"Huh, oh, Hachi isn't hatched yet," Julius mumbled, a little sheepishly. Yeah, maybe he had gotten attached to something that wasn't even fully alive yet, but hey. "Eh, really? Sounds good, getting stronger is always important..."
His voice suddenly trailed off. For what, though? Julius always felt good after a good training session or some hours spent in tall grass. But he wasn't sure why. He wasn't eighteen and could hardly dream of being a champion. But there was something else he was seeking...

"yeah, java's doin' pretty good. can't wait 'till he evolves."
she paused briefly to stuff pieces of lettuce, onion, ham and carrot into her mouth. a bit of dressing clung to her lips, but she merely swiped it away with the back of her hand. gesturing with her fork, andrea continued to speak.
"i got about a dozen pokemon now. it's gonna be expensive as fuck to train 'em all. and - "
the coordinator placed another clump of delicious veggies into her mouth and chewed, her words coming out garbled.
"imma be a bit slower than some other fuckers who only have a team of six - but, what-the fuck-ever, am i right? they'll get there eventually."
andrea swallowed.
"and, 'course it's important ta get stronger. how else are we gonna fuck with team magma and aqua?"
a brief pause followed as the girl mulled over the subject.
"we gotta figure this shit out, julius. ya hate aqua and magma. i hate aqua and magma, too. we can hate all day and night long but that ain't gonna do shit. so, let's figure it out. how would ya taken 'em out?"

Julius fond himself internally laughing at the thought of how radically different the two were, and yet how they shared the same love for anarchy and of course, women. He gaped a little at the revelation.
"A dozen?" He shook his head and said, "Yeah, if they all take after their mistress, gonna be hella 'explosive', expensive aside." He couldn't help be a little taken aback when a piece of stray salad flew from her yapping mouth to his cheek, and wiped it off, still smiling. He held up his hands. "A dozen at a time, seriously, that would drive normal people insane. Hands up, Andrea." He held up his palms as a show of surrender.
But his eyes lit up at the mention of Magma and Aqua, and his hands fell to the table as he leaned in, thinking. He didn't respond right away, but he wondered actually. So many times before, either casually or not, this conversation had cropped up before. They were always talking about it and were perfectly aware about the other's belief. They were perfectly aware what they were getting stronger for.
"In the end, though," he said, tone a little more quiet and soft. "It's not just Aqua and Magma. The whole world is messed up. We could fight them however we want, society won't change."
His own cynicism caught him off guard, and he found his hand resting his head and his other hand tapping impatiently on the table. Suddenly, after a long pause, his hand's tapping stopped and he stopped looking at the floor and looked at Andrea.
"Say, Andrea. It's been what, at least some months in Hoenn for the both of us, yeah? What do you think the odds are that everyone here thinks like us? That maybe the whole of Hoenn is sick to death of these two teams, and despises their beloved rangers for not doing anything..."
it took her a moment to process what julius was gettin' at. but, once she did, she was truly intrigued. there were likely folk out there who were less than content with the region's justice system. it was flimsy, and allowed for criminals to naturally thrive if they kept their business under wraps. andrea licked her lips, polishing off the remainder of her salad as she mulled over this in silence.
"i think ya got the right idea, pal. i think ya really do."
she tapped at her temple.
"ya see, julius, ya got the brains. yer smart as fuck. book smart, yeah. me? i can barely do fuckin' math. but i can talk, and i'm strong - i ain't 'fraid of much, either. my team may not be the best 'round town. but, i got the right kinda 'umph' ta get the job done and work my way up from the bottom to the top."
andrea wiggled her fork between two fingers, eyeing the silver tips that were covered in a thin layer of flavored sauce.
"the odds are good. team aqua and magma - criminals in general - have been 'round fer years. and they fucked with the wrong people."
she smiled.
"they can fuck with us, right? so why not fuck with them?"
the girl chuckled, a fire within beginning to burn bright as an idea took root.

Julius began eating at his salad, meticulousl finishing off everything on his plate as he allowed the information to sink in, and watched Andrea's reaction carefully. She slowly understood, and immediately agreed. Julius would have expected anyone else to throw their salad at him and call him crazy, maybe roll their eyes and laugh at the impossibility of it all.
But Andrea got it in a second, and she looked even fiercer than before. She wasn't afraid at all, he suddenly realized. What she actually said went from one ear to the outside of the next and Julius couldn't help silently admire something about the eighteen year old girl. She thought they could really do it. Bring the world order down, fuck around with the most dangerous organizations in the world. And the way she said it, he thought so too. He forgot all about his fight with Rory, how his heart had skipped a whole verse and not just one beat, and forgot about how badly he was injured.
At her words he was suddenly pumped up as well, for what, though, he didn't know. For a crazy cause with an even crazier chick beside him? Probably.
"Hell yeah. Just don't take that too literally," he added with a smile, hoping to tease her again about Rory-slash-Liam.
"We'll need to take the initiative, obviously. You and I." He thought about it, quietly removing a cigarette and a lighter and swiftly lighting the death stick. "The people here, in Hoenn. They're all just waiting for a spark. And we'll light it, alright."
He took a long swing and blew out, watching the clouds form.
"An anti-criminal syndicate...something that encompasses all..."
"huh. i'm likin' the sound of that. yeah," andrea drawled. "yah got one hell of a plan in the works, julius. keep with it."
after that bit of encouragement, the girl reach out to sip at her preferred choice of drink - strawberry soda. the delectable liquid splashed against her tongue, the chilled drink leaving her immensely satisfied. especially in this heat. she eyed the man's cigarette, quirking a sculpted brow as he exhaled a plume of wispy smoke.
"it's too hot fer that shit, man," she criticized. "check!"
she called out to their waiter, who merely nodded in response before hurrying away.
"ya know i got yer back, right, julius?"
an honest smile formed, one that signified that she didn't mind taking on the dangers or challenges they would have to face in the future. this wasn't just a fairy tail. this was something that the man intended to make real. the woman had easily identified that gleam in his eye, and it left her excited.
"ain't gonna be easy. but with yer brains, i bet we could get this shit started."
after a brief pause, she hummed.
"wanna have a re-match? my chances aren't too good, i know. but, i'm itchin' fer some action."

He was thrown out of his thoughts by Andrea shouting for the check, which made him look up like he was suddenly reminded that the world existed. He watched the waiter scurry off and had just enough time to recollect himself before Andrea smiled at him, her cerulean eyes twinkling with a determined sparkle, like she'd refuse to let it go despite the odds. And he could believe her, because that was just the kind of person she was.
"Yeah, and I got yours. Us together, we could take on the world." Maybe any other time the sentence would have been said with an eye roll and some lazy sarcasm, but right now he was serious. Andrea hummed and Julius listened, smile growing wider at the idea of a match against her.
"I'll go easy, no worries--" the waiter came back, and Julius immediately changed to the oddly cultured person he was, and easily slipped the cash onto the table with a small yet existent tip, all before Andrea could complain or even notice.
He stood up, ready to leave and enjoy the spacious roof top garden created for pokemon battling. "Anyway, the rematch, yeah?" He offered, gesturing with a quick move of his chin to the spot he had scouted out. He headed towards it, not doubting for a second that she wouldn't follow.
she followed him with an eager grin on her face after pulling out a few crumpled bills and coins from her pocket and slapping them against the counter. satisfied that he had accepted her offer, andrea moved to trot at his side, her gaze occasionally wandering. she would point out a few items of interest here and there as they passed them by, enjoying this moment of shared tranquility.
it was weird.
she felt comfortable.
and safe.
andrea's gaze lingered upon julius only when he was temporarily distracted, a curious look forming upon her face. something within her, at that very moment. clicked.
she liked julius. she liked him a lot. he was loyal. and funny. and cool to hang around. her adventure wouldn't have been this exciting if it wasn't for him. looking away, a small smile formed, a pink flush settling upon her cheeks as a warm feeling tickled at her gut.
"so, this is it, huh?"
the girl burst into a run as she moved to examine the garden, white lines neatly printed to indicate where they would battle.
"wicked view," she commented. "ready ta get this shit started?"
andrea had already settled on her side, standing ready but gesturing for the male to go first.

The thought of Andrea in that way, a way that was more than a friend or a sister, had occurred to him, but only a long long time ago, when their first meeting was going on. Now it was hard to say, and Julius cared for her more like a sister than anything else. So he really wasn't thinking about anything as he walked to the battle zone.
He turned back to hear Andrea's voice, and reveled slightly in the familiarity of her look. Those blue eyes that seemed pumped for just about anything, for just about everything. She was already ready, Julius could tell, but it seemed like it would fall on him to get the real party started. Fair enough.
He smiled and removed from seemingly nowhere a pokeball, and tapped on it lightly to maximize it. When that was done he opened it, letting loose a flash of white light that took the shape of a strange quadruped. The shape didn't make sense until the light faded, but soon after you could see the brilliant yellow fur of a pikachu with its four legs on the ground.
Zwei was a hyper active rascal that loved trouble as much as Andrea. Julius felt like it would be a fitting match up. The pikachu looked at his opponent, infectious grin clear on his face. It had been a while since he had seen all of Andrea's team- he remembered a bagon and a pooch, and of course her iconic froakie. But obviously she had some new toys in her arsenal, and he wondered what they could be.
