"Come on out" Usa yelled as he tossed the Pokeball he recieved from the Professor, into the air. From it emerged a white figure. An absol.
"So cool!" Usa thought as his body began to tremble with excitement. The glee on his face was like no other. He had a grin as wide as the moon. It took him a few seconds to come to himself. The self he portrayed to others, at least. This type of emotional response, he reserved for when he was alone. And, in the middle of a route anyone could just appear at any given time. He looked at the Pokemon that stood before him and smiled. It (He) had been watching its trainer intently...perhaps confused by the sudden shifts in facial expression Usa was making. "Absooo?" the pokemon purred as it waited patiently for its trainer to say something. Usa just continued to smile. He was awed by how majestic his first Pokemon was. After a few seconds, he proudly declared: "Leonidas...that's what I'll call you!"

Dmitri came strutting through Route 101 with his Swinub curled up in his arms, ready to be violently thrown at any wild pokemon that might appear. Otherwise it kept him quite warm, and he stroked the fuzzy fur gently and Broski became quite relaxed. His eager pink nose sniffed at the air and suddenly it gave a squeak. Swinub-nub!Yeah, yeah; it all sounds same to me. Swinub's eyes darted towards the trainer ahead with a devilish looking canine companion.
"That thing looks like wannabe poodle, and you name it Leonidas?" Rather than await a response, he rudely presented a PokeDex and scanned without permission. Absol, huh? Asbolutely a rare Pokemon, am glad I got the scan. Kid looks like wuss, maybe we battle. He pointed at the stranger.
"Me Dmitri, we battle now. Your Pokemon looks like crap I once took back home after holiday dinner with too much drink. Broski make short work of it." Broski flew throw the air and landed some few feet away from Leonidas, neither quite understanding the situation quite yet. Perhaps Dmitri's broken english was the problem, but assuredly they would battle.
I hate to say such rude things, but I want a battle. And the broken english likely makes me seem very dumb if not just silly. It was a subtle trick to pressure the upcoming trainer into a battle, but perhaps it wasn't necessary to nudge him so fiercely with his words. Still, Dmitri wasn't known for being too clever, mostly just blunt.

Usa's right eyebrow began to twitch. This was a sure signal that the trainer's words had hit a nerve. Forget the wannabe poodle line, the hell did he mean Leonidas looked like crap? No one could be that rude, right? No one would be that cruel as to insult a Pokemon, right?
Usa turned to face the trainer and his swinub. His face was now stone cold. "I'm sure I could think of a few mean things to say about you AND your Pokemon, but I won't stoop to your disgusting level..." His words were equally cold and unforgiving. By now, Leonidas had made its way to its trainer's side. It stood with its feet planted firmly and head tilted backward, simply glaring at the swinub that stood a few steps before it. "Well you wanted to battle...come at me" Usa yelled while making a gesture that beckoned the stranger to attack.

Dmitri's pose shifted suddenly and his feet were spread far apart, an index finger point at the Absol as words came oozing from his mouth to command Broski. I wonder if he'll just shout dodge the whole time... Only time would reveal the tactics of this stranger.
"Broski, attack with Freeze-Dry!" The Swinub took a sharp intake of breath before loosing it through its orifice, spewing a rushing gale of freezing coolant towards the enemy's Absol. If the stranger wasn't careful the attack might end up striking them by mistake. Wouldn't be the first time I've seen that kind of collateral damage. Broski's breath abruptly ended as it quickly struggled to catch its breath in the midst of combat.
Going to need some more lung power on this guy.
"Freeze-Dry once more!" Broski eyed Leonidas carefully, attempting to trace the target's movements before loosing another howling blast in its wake. Dmitri could feel the ambient humidity fade away and the chilling atmosphere that overtook the vicinity, prompting him to shiver lightly. Such great power; colder than a winter's morn back home.
Broski was making him proud right about now, not to mention incredibly nostalgic.
Broski used Freeze-Dry! Broski used Freeze-Dry!

Usa smirked. Freeze-dry huh? He had read about that in a text book. Ice type; known to freeze Pokemon on occasion. Dangerous. His eyes grew more intense as he curled his fists and bellowed a command: "Go fourth Leonidas...use DETECT to get around that attack!" The Pokemon let out a shrieking battle cry as a quick lunge to the left caused him to dance around the ice attack like a figure skater. As the cold wind blew passed, the snow white fur on his body shook like trees on a windy day.
Usa's face eased into a proud expression. His Pokemon did as he asked, and looked beautiful doing it. So much for Leonidas being crap! The moment soon passed. The cold gust of wind from the attack Leonidas had dodged now enveloped Usa. It didn't hit him directly, but the temperature around him had suddenly dropped. The frosty trails of his breath was an indicator of that fact. What more, his opponent had already ordered his Pokemon to attack again. How unoriginal...as he thought it, the words escaped his mouth: "Not very original!" Usa raised his hand t point in the direction of the stranger "This is how you battle...Leonidas, use ME FIRST!" Leonidas quickly jumped into formation - hopping a few steps backward and then firmly planting his feet in the soil. The Pokemon growled as his horn began to glow. Soon after, a swirl of icy wind began to form around it. In seconds, it was launching an attack that seemed equal in power to that of the opponent's. The two attacks collided.

"Broski, strafe to the left and rush for a Tackle!" The Swinub barely dodged the oncoming rush of Freeze-Dry it had managed to mimic. What a cheap trick, and Absol is definitely much faster too. It seemed almost impossible for Broski, but Dmitri refused to give up so easily. Eventually the Absol would make itself vulnerable.
"Now, use Freeze-Dry once more!" Broski could hardly be expected to use anything more to impact the Absol, it was one of his strongest moves to begin with. Yet the Absol had a skill set that proved far beyond a beginner pokemon. Great, looks like I might eat my words. But it's not like I really meant it, I hope the kid doesn't have any hard feelings. His eyes bore down on the Absol, as if Dmitri himself was trying to use leer in return.
Can't give in; I won't accept this as defeat yet.

"Chance..." Usa muttered. Tackle...one of the weaker normal type attack; doesn't get type advantage; not very dangerous.
His eyes lit up as the rush from the battle began to build inside him. He tightened his fists and pulled his elbows closer to his side. "Dig your claws into the ground and brace yourself for impact, Leonidas" Usa yelled. Leonidas quickly complied. "Use RAZOR WIND!" As the Pokemon lowered his body in anticipation of the impending tackle, a gentle breeze began to circle around his horn. The fur on his back stood tall.
The swinub was swiftly approaching. Usa began to grit his teeth as if he too were about to take a tackle to the face. Tackle hit. The sound of the impact echoed down the bushy path. The impact pushed Leonidas few steps back. His sunken claws left a long scratch pattern in the ground. Leonidas let out a subtle whimper as he tried to maintain his composure.
"Now use freeze-dry once more"... Usa smirked when he heard the stranger give the command for another freeze-dry. That again? This stranger is making himself too predictable. By now, the wind that had been forming around Leonidas' horn had begun to pick up speed. The Pokemon's horn started to glow.
An icy gush of wind was en route towards Leonidas. Even worst, the Pokemon was in the midst of launching an attack of his own, and only a few steps away from the opposing Pokemon. But, being that close to the swinub was the exact situation that Usa needed. That was his reason for making Leonidas take the hit in the first place. He figured, Leonidas' longer legs could allow him to potentially dodge a close range attack while swinub's shorter legs would make it harder for it to do the same.
"DODGE that freeze-dry" he yelled as he pointed in the direction of the Pokemon. "Now let the RAZOR WIND blast!" No sooner said, Leonidas with his horn brightly glowing and a strong wind now swirling around him, quickly lunged out of the way and then fired a violent gust of razor like wind in the direction of the opposing Pokemon.

"Broski, JUST DO IT!" Have to believe in him, cannot give up on my own Pokemon... Dmitri was having mixed feelings right now, but he knew better than to lay the presure on his Swinub. It was hardly to blame for the bad matchup and Dmitri had brazenly sought to pick a fight he shouldn't have in retrospect. But he would see it through.
Taking the hit, Swinub was blown back off its feet and tumbled after crashing onto its back, but recovered swiftly with obvious signs of discomfort. It's okay if you lose, buddy. You're trying your best. Dmitri wished someone was there to console him with those same words. Broski needed to land something, but Leonidas was prepared to evade nearly everything he threw at it.
"Just keep trying Freeze-Dry!" If I could just land it once, I'm sure it would pack a punch. But Absol is incredible, why is it so powerful without any experience? This and more troubled him, and Dmitri almost blanked out of the battle before realizing what Broski was up to. Struggling to keep his edge, loosing frigid jets of air upon his enemy. At least he's got spirit. More than anything, this is what Dmitri wanted in his pokemon.
A battling spirit born of their own desire to triumph.

Success! Usa was ecstatic. Twice, his strategy had gone off without a hitch. Could he do it a third time? He lost all his composure from before. His body now more relaxed and his face plastered with a huge grin, he had little doubt that he could win the match. Still think my Pokemon is crap now, stranger? His eyes shimmered with excitement. He couldn't help but yell: "Leonidas, you're amazing!" He gave the Pokemon two thumbs up to further show his approval of the Pokemon's performance.
His attention then turned to the stranger. Must be feeling the pressure now... His grin morphed into a smug grin. "You alright over there?" The words rolled off his tongue in a rather condescending tone. "My intention was totally not to crush that oversized ego you displayed earlier...I just thought it needed to be deflated a bit".
But, now what? Up until now, he had allowed the other trainer to make the first move. Usa's real strategy was just to implement proper counter measures. A pretty textbook strategy. Now what? If he used the same attacks again, he would run the risk of becoming predictable... A dilemma the other trainer didn't seem to be affected by. Perhaps I should go on the offensive? A surge of excitement rushed all over him. Why not? My instincts have been right so far... His smug grin remained.
Feint. It's weak, but it's the best option right now. By now, the swinub had managed to gather itself and was already on the move to deliver the attack its trainer commanded. Another freeze-dry, hmph. "Use DETECT Leonidas". Oh look, another freeze-dry. "Use DETECT again!" Then I can follow up with Feint. The first time, Leonidas was able to dance around the attack with little effort, just like before. The second time, however, was quite different.
An oversight! In his moment of confidence -- overconfidence -- Usa had forgotten what he had read about moves like detect. They fail when used successively. Crap, not good! The icy blast connected full force with Leonidas, not only sending him flying backward, but also leaving little frost traces about his body. This was trouble. It meant his maneuverability was reduced. What now? Leonidas can't use his body advantage like before. If not for the fact that the area was now icy cold, sweat brought on by these recent developments would probably be dripping down his face. Crap. I guess offensive tactics is not my strong suite just yet...I need to work on how I set up those kinds of attacks.

"Do not count your eggs before they've hatched, this is still anybody's game!" Swinub seemed relieved to hear hor confident Dmitri was in him, and was invigorated by the demonstration. Hampered by his previous injuries, it was difficult for it to make any headway but those stubby little paws scampered him eagerly forward through sheer resolve.
"Thatta boy, Broski! Freeze-Dry that sucker!" Swinub the Broski let loose a meager battle cry before rushing towards the Absol in a moment of bold defiance, almost rejecting his commands in favor of his own. What's this about...? Clearly Broski wasn't in his right mind as the Swinub boldly defied the orders of Dmitri so casually.
It slammed itself at the overencumbered Absol, struggling to inflict harm on its vitality. Evidently the energy had left him and Freeze-Dry along with most of his other moves were ineffective. "Broski...? Hey Broski, you alright?!" It seemed to push itself towards the Absol with a vengeance, but ultimately its frustrated assault depleted any reserved energy it had left.
It hadn't fainted, but any desire to move seemed lost to it. Conserving what vitality Broski remained, it meekly drifted into a deep slumber. You earned it, buddy. Good work. A resonance beam deposited Broski the Swinub into the pokeball gently as Dmitri dropped it into his bag. He waved the other trainer over expectantly.
"That was a great fight, despite being the second time I've lost this week. Absol has exeeded my expectations, and so have you. Good job!" Closing the distance between him and his opponent, right hand slapping across the shoulder of his newfound friend. "I am Dmitri, what should I call you friend?" If I want to dream big, I have to start small. Pulling them towards the Pokemon Center casually, he hoped to learn more from the successful trainer.

Usa watched with widened eyes as the swinub made its way towards Leonidas. As it did, he took stock of the situation and tried to devise strategies to ensure that his Pokemon didn't take any more damage. Detect? Maybe...Maybe this was the perfect time for him to launch another full scaled attack. Another Razor Wind?...that would take too long. Fient?...not strong enough...Maybe dodge?...that seems like the best option right now...Not fast enough. Before he realized it, the swinub was already launching attacks. Leonidas had no other defence than to dig his claws into the cold soil and drop his body closer to the ground.
Hit after hit, Leonidas firmly held its position. With each hit, he let out a subtle whimper. But, what was going on? Usa watched in amazement. Each hit seemed to be doing more damage to the swinub. What was happening? Usa had no idea. He had never read about something like this before. Even more curious, the tiny Pokemon seemed to be pushing through the pain. Gutsy...the little thing looks like it can barely move. The tiny Pokemon slammed itself into Leonidas a few times, before going down.
Usa stood still for a moment. He wasn't sure whether he had won the battle out of luck - Leonidas was in a tough situation towards the end, after all - or by strategy. His gaze still fixed on the battlefield, he reached for the pokeball in his pocket. When he found it, he slowly raised his hand to recall his Pokemon. "Good job Leo..." he let fall out of his mouth with little emotion.
The Pokemon swung its head upward and let out a loud howl. As it did, a bright red light surrounded him, returning him to his pokeball. The howl snapped Usa out of his shock. He recomposed himself - putting the pokeball back in his pocket and then straightening his clothes. By now, the stranger had made his way over to where Usa was standing.
"That was a great fight, despite being the second time I've lost this week. Absol has exeeded my expectations, and so have you. Good job... I am Dmitri, what should I call you friend?"
Usa retained his cold facial expression. "Of course it would exceed your expectations...anything would when you refer to it as crap right from the start..." Usa's voice was firm and mildly aggressive. Though the trainer seemed a bit more friendly now, Usa was not letting him off the hook for insulting his Leonidas without an apology. "Perhaps you could apologize about being so rude earlier...then we can get the pleasantries". In truth, Usa was also impressed by the trainer and swinub's performance. And, no Pokemon would fight that hard for a trainer that was a complete dirtbag, right? Still, Usa felt obligated to call the trainer out on his behaviour at the start of the match.

"Oh, come now; I just wanted to egg you on and milk you for your worth. Pokemon and trainers fight best with a goal, and I gave you one in showing me up. I'm sorry if it helps, but I come up with those sorts of remarks all the time. I think it's good for the Pokemon and their trainer to learn a little humility." Smiling, Dmitri knew better than to try and rely solely on an apology. He felt comfortable explaining the cause for his verbal abuse of Leonidas and the stranger. I guess he doesn't like name calling. I thought it was funny... must be a really good guy to be so sensitive. He pushed the discussion further.
"So I've told you my name, why don't you go ahead and tell me yours?" By now they had reached the outskirts of Oldale Town and Dmitri rushed towards the Pokemon Center. Broski is best bro, cannot wait to see how much he's grown. Stepping into the building, he placed Swinub into a nurse's hands and patiently awaited its return. Until then he would have to occupy his free time elsehow. Maybe a nap...? He stretched himself and yawned. Nap sounds good, but first thing's first...
"Maybe you should drop off Absol too. He could use something for the Freeze-Dry. Maybe we could go do friend stuff... Hehe, sorry: I'm foreign and don't have many friends in Hoenn. I was hoping you might be my first." He started to grow nervous and distracted himself by pushing their party's course towards a park outside. Wish there was something I could get for Broski, he's been working so hard. Dmitri pondered on where he might find a reward for his Swinub's endeavors.
WITH ALL MY STRENGTH, I WILL FIGHT FOR WHAT IS RIGHT!
Usa examined the stranger's face as he spoke. Dmitri was it? First, he watched the stranger's eyes and then his gaze slowly dropped to the stranger's mouth. He wasn't talking like he was before. Was his manner of speech from before all an act? This warranted caution. Then again, the stranger - Dmitri - did admit to trying to egg Usa on. Still, Usa was cautious. He knitted his brows and tightened his fists. His chest pushed up high, he declared: "My name is Usa...and I don't agree with your methods". He paused for a bit and relaxed his posture. "But, you seem to care about your Pokemon, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you're not an utter dirtbag". He took a deep breath before continuing: "Thank you for the apology...I will accept it for now". He slowly reached into his pocket and pulled out the pokeball that housed his Absol. Taking Dmitri's suggestion, he made his way over to the nurse and handed the pokeball over. "Please take good care of him" he uttered and then took a bow. As he did, the nurse smiled. Soon after, she disappeared behind a door that said "Staff Only". Usa smiled as he watched her leave.
With Leonidas now taken care of, all that was left was Dmitri. New to the region...friends...friend stuff. Usa quickly went over the bits of information he had just been given by the trainer. "I see..." he replied as he made his way over to a park bench and sat down. "What kind of 'friend stuff' did you have in ming?" With a smug grin, he continued: "assuming that I consider you a friend..."

"I don't really know what people do here. Could always just grab lunch, I'm sure our pokemon wouldn't mind something after that match." He tried to wrap his arm around Usa and bring him closer, struggling out a laugh. Man he's really trying to give me a ahrd time over that. Perhaps humor was lost on people over here.
"Excuse my sense of humor, most people where I'm from are used to the same and worse." Dmitri hoped it would placate Usa and allow them to overlook the circumstances of the challenge and continue along the path of comrades. Why is it everyone is so uptight? Maybe they all needed to get their panties out of a bunch; not that he would suggest this to someone as uptight as Usa Keji seemed to come off as.
"Do they eat Slowpoke Tails over here too? It's a delicacy back home." As if Dmitri hadn't already spoken enough to upset Usa, here he came out with another curve ball to baffle and push his not-so-much-a-friend away from him and his journey. Yet it piqued his interest to know if they thought so too over here. From how pink Usa looked, he wondered if the kid didn't regularly chow down on Slowpoke Tails daily. There goes my bad humor once again to ruin an otherwise normal conversation. He needed a book for making friends, at this point he was getting out of control.
WITH ALL MY STRENGTH, I WILL FIGHT FOR WHAT IS RIGHT!
Usa's smug expression quickly turned into an awkward glare. Dmitri had managed to wrap his arm around him, and this was not something he was use to. Maybe if it were his brother he would be fine. But, being so up close and personal with a trainer he had just met was definitely not his cup of tea. Too close, too close, too close... His heart began to race. Meanwhile, his cheeks slowly began to turn a bright pink hue. "Why is this guy hugging me" he muttered under his breath in a slightly annoyed tone. "I'm not sure how to feel about this...". His gaze shifted forward - not to look at anything in particular, but to avoid looking at the trainer's face that was now too close to his.
Usa took a deep breath to gather himself. As he did, his body started to relax a bit. Guess if I think of this like an interaction between my brother and I, It wouldn't be so awkward...maybe this is how teenagers interact normally. He had just managed to to catch the last bit of what Dimitri said before chiming in: "Hehe...unique sense of humour...where you're from, gotcha". He smiled in an attempt to seem more friendly, but it only made him appear more awkward. Realizing this, he swung his arm up and rested it on Dmitri's shoulder. He smiled again...it was still awkward in appearance. Luckily for him, though, the trainer interrupted the awkward moment by continuing his little spiel: "Do they eat Slowpoke Tails over here too? It's a delicacy back home." Usa's eyebrows flared up. He couldn't help but make a disgusted expression. Still, for whatever reason, he was bent on being friendly. "No.." he replied in an abrupt tone, "How does that taste?" He could feel his stomach turn as he pictured Dmitri stuffing a slowpoke's tail - poor slowpoke - in his mouth.
