After a bit more training and with some half serious promise, Syndra now stood in front of the Petalburg gym mentally ready to begin her first challenge against the gym leader. She took a slow inhale to focus herself on the task at hand. For the most part she had reviewed the type that this gym leader used but she had no pokemon that could finish the battles quickly. So she felt she had to rely on the sheer strength of her own pokemon and she would trust them in this. The previous night was all strenuous training so her pokemon and her team all understood what the training was for. Now that they were all primed and ready the girl released her breath and stepped forward to enter the gym.
Sliding the door to the gym open, she looked around. The large battlefield was likely what they would be battling on and it was cleared of obstacles which was good. She cupped her right hand to the side of her lips to act as a booster to carry her voice as she spoke. "Oi! I'm here for a gym battle! Is anyone here that can indulge me?"
norman walks out into the gym. someone has entered. he's excited to see the prospective trainers earn their first badges. they are always either cocky, scared to death, or somewhere in between. sometimes both.
he grins at the person across the stage. "alright, welcome challenger." he throws out a pokeball. sentret rises from it's place, ready for a battle.
The gym leader finally made his appearance, showing himself on the battlefield. The young woman didn't know what to expect aside from seeing normal types so she steeled herself in preparation for this fight. She wasn't much scared but she was indeed more confident. Then again so did the gym leader but she chalked that up as him being used to all this. She bowed her head forward in appreciation, "thank you." Her head was now in the game as she looked forward to see the first pokemon she would be facing. A sentret wasn't very threatening but she didn't overlook its potential as she sent out her first pokemon. In a flash of light as she threw the pokeball her Sandshrew would appear with a battle cry. The battlefield was fancier than what the ground type was used to as lately she fought outside but that didn't matter as of now.
Given the offer to go first, the girl took it with pleasure as she knew exactly what she wanted to do. "Use Magnitude into rollout!" The ground type gave another cry as she stomped her feet into the floor to send a shockwave to attack the brown pokemon. After that the yellow pokemon leaned forward to roll into a ball, gaining a bit of momentum to roll forward to bowl into the Sentret. While none of these moves were particularly effective against normal types, magnitude would do decent damage and rollout would gain enough power the more she used it in succession. Plus there were many plays she could do with her Sandshrew in ball form.
sandslash stomps on the earth. a shockwave rushes towards sentret, knocking it into the ground. she squeals as she falls down and is hit with a rollout. ouch, that hurt a lot!
"use scratch!" norman orders. sentret nods and waits until the sandslash is close, and scratches it.
The attack hit its mark as the ground type could feel the Sentret clawing on her skin after hitting it. Still with it close by now Syndra wasn't going to let it get any rest. So far she would continue with her plan and see how far it got her. "Use rapid spin to get it off of you and gain momentum then keep using rollout!" As commanded the yellow pokemon wouldn't stop spinning in her ball state, quickly spinning her body to attack the Sentret to get it off to prevent it from stopping the rollout from occurring next. After that it bowled towards the normal type shockingly fast.
The small brown pokemon was recalled relatively swiftly. While elated at the win Syndra didn't expect the fight to go so well so quickly. With the next pokemon being called out the girl rose a brow questioningly. Litleo was a normal type but if the next pokemon was something that Sandshrew wasn't strong against she thought that it would have been sent out first. Being part fire type wouldn't help the gym leader in the slightest and Syndra was going to make it so that much was obvious. Still she didn't want the ground type to be taking all the glory so she figured that she should use a substitute here since her Spheal needed experience too.
"Return Sandshrew," she recalled the pokemon as she threw out the next pokeball. The round water type appeared in a flash of light with a cry of his name. The gym leader started this round this time and knowing that it wouldn't hurt that much Spheal took the ember attack. It singed his fur a bit but his ability thick fat made it so he barely felt anything more than a sting along with the heat. "Use Encore then Water Gun!" The chubby pokemon tried his best to clap his fins together in celebration and amusement of the Litleo's attack to encourage it to keep using the same move. Then he spat out a stream of water from his mouth towards the part fire type to do damage.
spheal does a little clap. that means litleo's stuck doing his attacks again and again. he puffs out his fur confidently, breathing in and shooting another flurry of embers towards the spheal. norman watches stoically, since there's nothing he can do.
litleo♀ - level 010 - keen eye moveset: tackle, leer, ember work up, headbutt
The plan worked like a charm and the Litleo was stuck using fire against her Spheal. Again the water type took the attack with a little more than a bit of heat on his skin which he didn't mind. Everything was working in Syndra's favor so far and none of her pokemon were too injured. Hopefully it would keep going this way until the end. "Keep spraying water gun," the female trainer ordered in an effort to end this quickly as possible. The plush like pokemon inhaled then spat out more water, spraying two different streams in succession of each other to hit the Litleo.
Turtwig, grass-type (overgrow)
Sandile, ground-type (intimidate)
Sandshrew, ground-type (sand rush)
Spheal, water/ice-type (thick fat) Level 14
Vulpix, fire-type (flash fire)
Spheal took the ember attack and then used water gun 2x
with the last spurt of water gun litleo faints. it's a smart stragedy. norman silently appluads the challenger for the cleverness. he returns the pokemon and takes out another pokeball.
"go, slakoth!" he says. it's by far the strongest pokemon. and the laziest. he needs to utilize it's attack before its ability takes effect. he yawns at the pokemon before rushing forward to scratch at it.
The motion of applause from the opposite side of the field was spotted out and caused some heat to rise to the female trainer's face. She didn't expect for the gym leader to do such a thing and took it as praise which led to a bit of embarrassment. It didn't detract from her attention much but the female was thankful for it. When the next pokemon was called out it was one that Syndra recognized as the mascot pokemon of sorts based on what she read. Slakoth were known for their lackadaisical movements however so she knew that this fight had to end quickly. Instead of switching out she stuck with using her Spheal for this battle.
Norman took the lead again but more due to the pokemon's will as the gym leader gave no other vocal commands. The yawn attack should have been expected but it caught the Spheal off guard and the action was mirrored. "Spheal do not fall asleep!" Syndra called out to the pokemon who already looked drowsy from the attack. Then in a speed that Syndra did not believe that Slakoths could achieve the scratch hit the chubby pokemon who rolled backwards slightly. The attack helped prevent the pokemon from going into sleep with a sting of pain on his skin and so he tried to get the Slakoth to keep doing that to him. Using encore to achieve this the ice type clapped his fins together to cheer on the same attack before preparing for it with thicker skin produced with defense curl. Syndra noticed this and believed her pokemon made the correct call here so added nothing, staring intently at the fight for anything she could use to their advantage.
Spheal, water/ice-type (thick fat) Level 16
Spheal took both the yawn and scratch. Uses Encore and Defense Curl.
the spheal's encores were still relentless. slakoth is forced to yawn and scratch again and again, but then it's ability takes effect. the pokemon stills, be coming truant and still not listening to orders. norman stays silent through the ordeal, because there's nothing else that he could do to possily make the pokemon attack.
Truant! Finally the ability came into effect just as a second scratch hit the spheal who was growing ever tired by the yawn. Now was the chance to strike and Syndra saw it clearly. They had to crush the Slakoth quickly before its true nature wore off. "Use Ice ball in succession!" The water type fought the weariness again and inhaled to produce a large chunk of spherical ice before him. With defense curl used before it, not only was the scratch damage from before minimized but the ice ball should be twice as powerful. The chill from the ice filed through the room and the female could feel her skin tingling from the sensation. The crystal like ball was shot out at dramatic speeds towards the truant pokemon and immediately after another one formed. This time the ice ball was bigger than the previous one aiming to hit the lazy normal type with it so it wouldn't be able to fight back.
Still Syndra knew that the yawn would take its toll. Maybe one or two attacks more until the little spheal could no longer resist the temptation that sweet slumber brought. Hoping to win before then she clenched her fist with the faith that her pokemon would be able to last that long at least.
Spheal, water/ice-type (thick fat) Level 16
Spheal took both the yawn and scratch. Uses Ice ball 2x
litleo's positively smacked aside by the karate chop, and that attack's just enough to let it faint. poor thing. norman returns it and takes out another, slakoth taking form on the field.
the pokemon yawns before rushing forward and using a feint attack at the pancham, disappearing and swiping from behind the pokemon.
Syndra bit her bottom lip as the second attack failed to hit the mark. It was too late now and the ice type was out of energy to fight back the urge to fall asleep. The round pokemon tilted his body to the side and instantly began the nap that the yawn forced out of him. The female was hoping that the attack of the Slakoth would wake up the sleeping pokemon but instead it rolled the slumbering pokemon around on the field. It would not wake up and Syndra couldn't sit there and wait for the ice type to wake up. The injuries that it has sustained so far showed as well so the girl doubted it could hold out for much longer. A stray breeze would knock it out. Hell it might already be knocked out and she couldn't tell because it was too deep into sleep already. "Spheal return!" the girl called even though the ice type would be too far gone to respond to her.
As the pokemon was recalled she threw out her previous pokemon, the ground type reappearing onto the field with renewed vigor. Sandshrew gave a cry of her name as she prepared for the next battle before her. It looked to her that she had the leftovers of something and she wasn't sure how she felt about that. "Waste no time. Let's finish this with Poison Sting then Magnitude!" The first quill of the ground type shot the venom coated attack at the Slakoth as she stomped on the ground once again. The force caused the ground to shake and hopefully this would be enough.
Spheal, water/ice-type (thick fat) Level 16 - Sleeping and recalled
Sanshrew, ground-type (sand rush) Level 16
Spheal took the feint attack as it slept. Recalled and replaced with Sandshrew who used poison sting and magnitude.
