In all truths, Sylvester was not able to do much other than take it easy on Seth. That was, being that Sylvester changed out his pokemon first, allowing Seth's wits of pokemon and their typing to come into play. He was cheerful that the lack of confidence could be rewarded now that he was able to display his knowledge about pokemon. Losing now would not be a let down, but instead Sylvester could feel good about it—about himself. He watched Shinx closely...
'Good, Seth knows how to help his Shinx hit harder.' As the Shinx charged itself up, the move that followed soon after zapped his Swablu quite mightily. "Swabluuu!" His pokemon fell to the grassy floor beneath it, proving unable to fly effectively as one of it's wings conducted the shock before the other, proving troublesome for it to move that wing, let alone move it. 'Didn't see that one...'
"Gunther, use astonish twice on that Shinx." Hobbling over in pain, yet still wanting to battle as it had yet to do much against the Shinx besides fail to protect itself, Gunther managed to jump in the pokemon's face and let out a frightening yelp before bashing into it, not just once, but two times over...

[ SETH ] The Swablu fell to the ground pretty hard. Either Sylvester wasn't trying as hard as he'd promised, or Sparks was stronger than Seth realized. Of course, the flying Pokemon would be weak to the electric attack (if Seth remembered correctly) but it already looked seriously weakened by the battle. Sylvester was taking this battle seriously, wasn't he? In any case, Seth felt bad for how hurt the Swablu seemed to be already.
Sparks seemed rather startled by the attack. "You got this, Sparks! Ice Fang! Seth remembered how clearly the move had felled a Swablu in the past. That had, however, been a completely different situation: it hadn't been a battle, and the opposing Swablu had been considerably weaker. Seth's Shinx took a second to get going, but charged at the Swablu mere seconds later, jumping into the air with ice-coated teeth.

Observing Seth and his pokemon further, Sylvester was quite surprised to know that his pokemon had an ice type attack. While it certainly wasn't good for him and his Swablu's chances of winning, he seemed relieved irregardless. The Shinx flinched, but ultimately his attack landed, as Gunther was not very capable of dodging at this current moment in time. "Swablu..." The pokemon let out a fading wail, before entering an unconscious state. 'Hmm...'
"You were a lot better off than I expected." A subtle frown formed on his face, though on the inside Sylvester did not truly feel displeased with the results of their battle. Allowing Gunthe back inside his pookeball, it was about time they wrapped up. After all, his pokemon were in need of medical attention. He didn't want to keep them waiting very long. "And your Shinx seems to be doing very well as your first pokemon, I'm impressed." Usually are pokemon were better, but in Seth's case he seemed to do just fine without one...
"Don't let that get to your head, though." He certainly wouldn't want to rapidly inflate Seth's ego, only to have it beat back down by some other trainer, or something of the sort. "I am in no way the strongest trainer in the region, after all..." Sylvester smiled towards the promising youth.

[ SETH ] Sylvester had always made sure any success didn't get to Seth's head. Always warning him of future dangers or harder roads. It was a curious thing. Seth appreciated the down-to-earth attitude, he supposed. It certainly wouldn't help him if someone were to lie to him and pretend that life would continue to be this easy. Was Sylvester simply trying to prepare him? ... Was Sylvester his mentor? The role seemed to fit--Sylvester throwing a match with his Ponyta, Sylvester showing up for a battle when Seth needed to train and toughen himself up as well. Even if that wasn't Sylvester's intent, Seth would now see him as such. That didn't mean, however, that they were done with the battle.
"Do you think I'm good enough to challenge the gym yet?" That was the whole issue at hand here, wasn't it? Seth didn't feel confident enough to challenge even the first Pokemon gym; he didn't feel his Pokemon were strong enough. Sylvester was a stronger trainer with more experience, so of course Seth would trust in his judgment. He had already gotten this gym badge, hadn't he? Before Sylvester would be given a chance to reply, though, something going on with Seth's Pokemon would more than likely distract them both.
Through the battle, Sparks had become stronger. Strong enough, it appears, to evolve! The process had started while the trainers spoke, and within moments a totally new Pokemon (new to Seth at least) would appear before them. In the initial shock, Seth's hands went to his mouth in a cute show of emotion. He hadn't expected his Shinx to evolve this soon, and it was wonderful! Seth rushed up to Sparks, scanning her quickly before petting her all over and ruffling her fur while making excited sounds. It was clear he was going to need to be reminded of the battle were it to continue.

Not wishing to imply to Seth that he would undoubtedly win his first gym challenge, Sylvester decided to remain modest, even after the Shinx of his evolved after their battle. "I don't think you're far from it, but one electric pokemon may not be enough. We'll see just how well they do against my strongest pokemon." Sylvester's tone grew a little more rigid, having returned his other pokemon and now proceeding to choose his third. Sylvester knew that this next match-up would be nigh impossible for Seth to beat, and that was the point of this. Keep the youth humble, yet give him reason to strive for his personal greatness. Whether it was capturing all the pokemon for the pokedex, or defeating the pokemon league. Either of those goals were great.
"You can have the first move again this time." Sylvester stood there waiting, Combusken dancing between his two feet, unable to stand still. As soon as he heard the most subtle hint towards a battle, Flint began getting pumped. Hopefully Seth knew how to fight strong pokemon, as their pokemon's type would be crucial in the moments to come...

[ SETH ] The excited sounds eventually stopped and Seth looked up at Sylvester, his expression growing serious again. Seth nodded and guided his Luxio away from the battle--the rules dictated he needed to change Pokemon, but he wasn't willing to recall his Luxio quite yet. Back on his side of where they were battling, Seth sized up the competition. It was a Pokemon he hadn't seen before, and it looked tough. He really only had one good Pokemon left to try out, though he doubted he would win this third round.
"Alright, L-Litwick, let's see what you can do!" Seth sent out a little candle Pokemon that seemed quite eager to get this battle started. The difference between even just the size of their Pokemon was intimidating. "Confuse it and then use Astonish, Lit!" The Litwick quickly floated toward the Combusken, going around it in circles a couple times, sending Confuse Ray toward it before suddenly appearing right in its face in an effort to surprise it.

The battle was still on, and Sylvester couldn't waste any time with small talk. With Seth's Litwick taking action, he commanded a dodge to his pokemon. "Flint, avoid those rays and counter their astonish with your flame charge."
As the pokemon barreled towards him, Flint would recuperate from the damage swiftly and tackle the Litwick while fire manifested around his body. "Again, keep beating them down." Another charge would be made, Flint intent on pursuing the Litwick until it knew who was boss around here. Even Sylvester knew he was a rather arrogant and cocky pokemon. 'I wonder if they will have something up their sleeve.' Though for now it seemed the battle was in Flint an Sylvester's favor.

[ SETH ] There was no way Litwick would be able to stand up to such a strong Pokemon for very long. Still, Seth would try his hardest to guide it to doing as much as it could. "Litwick, get out of the way! The most important thing to do would be to avoid as many attacks as possible; if the Combusken couldn't hit him, the Litwick would be able to get on longer. Continuing to float around in circles, the Litwick managed to avoid the first fiery hit, but the second collided before he could get out of the way.
A ghostly cry sounded and Litwick's floating faltered for a moment. It wasn't going to take many more of those hits to take him down, was it? "Try again, Litwick! Confuse it! Litwick did not seem happy about being hit and made some sputtering and hissing sounds at the Combusken as it tried to confuse it again. If that didn't work again, he would just keep going.

"Avoid those rays once more." Though, after calling for the dodge Sylvester realized how futile their efforts would be. Going for a second confusion, Flint was soon disoriented an bobbling his head a bit. "You okay Flint?!" The bird seemed to snap out of it, chiming loudly back at his trainer. "Ken!" Feeling as though it were safe to do so, Sylvester gave the order to attack. "Use flame charge again!" Chasing forward, it seemed that Flint was for the most part unfazed. Though after a moment of inspection, he realized the Combusken was running towards Seth. He leaped forward, though missed anyway and tumbled as he fell into the dirt. "Not him, Flint, the other one! Snap out of it!"
Swiftly getting up, Flint looked towards the other figure, being Litwick, and chased them down until he could unleash another powerful flaming charge. Sylvester could only hold his hand over his face, displeased by the fact his pokemon was now confused. At the very least, though, he didn't hurt Seth with his last attack. That would have been an unpleasant situation to be in...especially for the kid.

[ SETH ] Yes! It had worked! Seth stood a chance. A small chance, but a chance. If Litwick could keep whittling the Combusken's health down, he might just win. The biggest issue was still avoiding those attacks, though. Litwick wouldn't be able to do it forever. "Dodge it, Litwick!" With the Combusken confused, dodging it once was enough to save Litwick for this round. Seth knew it wouldn't be able to avoid another attack by the way its floating faltered.
"Come on, Litwick, you can do this! Use Astonish!" The little candle Pokemon taunted the Combusken by floating near its face. He seemed to be a having a grand time, laughing at the confused Pokemon and everything. It took a few seconds for it to get back on track, but it tried its best to startle the larger fire Pokemon.

As the battle went on, Sylvester could not help but feel an overwhelming amount of anxiety. He didn't want to lose to Seth, not with his best pokemon. That would be a horrid embarrassment, one he didn't feel he could live down. After Seth's pokemon got it's attacks in, Flint seemed to have his senses knocked back into him. "You alright, buddy?" The pokemon replied with a confident "Ken!", allowing Sylvester to resume their part of the battle.
"Alright then, hit the Litwick with another two servings of your flame charge." However, as Flint chased down the pokemon he over-calculated the lunge range, jumping into the air and tumbling down to the ground over the pokemon and even Seth. "Damn it." The battle wasn't going in their favor. Flint's own strength was being used against him, and it made Sylvester belligerent to think that he would lose to Seth when he was trying to take the battle much more seriously this time around.
After missing a second time and falling face-first before his own trainer, Sylvester's face simply drew a blank. This kind of battle wasn't what Sylvester favored. Burns, confusion, infatuation, paralysis and poison were all things he looked down upon in battle. Perhaps it was just his subtle way of being a sore loser, but Sylvester knew it was just his luck.
Standing back up, Flint turned around and faced his opponent admirably, though seemed thoroughly fatigued as he was barely able to stand upright.

[ SETH ] All Seth could do was stare on in bewilderment. He had no reason to be able to beat this Combusken: it was more experience than his Litwick and was owned by a more experienced trainer. Seth was aware that Sylvester might still be throwing matches with him, but his effort had seemed to be more genuine with this one. The suspicion was confirmed when Seth looked over at the other trainer and saw the frustration on his countenance. The confusion seemed to have been a good decision as it kept the fire Pokemon from hurting his Litwick--instead it was hurting itself!
Litwick was equally taken aback, but his reaction was still quite different. When the Combusken missed him so bad as to damage itself, Litwick looked at it with an air of superiority. What an arrogant little thing. "Come on, Litwick, let's finish this off." Seth seemed apprehensive to beat Sylvester this way--or at least he wasn't as quick to end the battle. It didn't quite feel right to continue hitting a Pokemon weakened by a status condition, but Seth and his Pokemon were the ones who had inflicted it, weren't they? Why shouldn't he do this and get his Litwick the experience? They had earned it.
The command was obeyed, and Litwick went with the oh-so-handy Astonish again. It's attempts to startle Sylvester's Combusken were sure to hit with how clumsy it was being in its confusion--at least, that's how Seth saw it playing out. It was hard to believe he was about to win! Whatever happened next, Seth doubted his mentor would be going easy on him in the future if he was able to beat one of his strongest Pokemon.

This battle was frustrating to say the very least. With Flint confused, he simply readied his pokebal. Once Seth's Litwick knocked him over unconscious, Sylvester swiftly retrieved the Combusken so that the pokemon could not be embarrassed for very long. "You did good." This was both to Seth, as well as Flint as he tucked the pokeball back inside the confines of his denim trench coat.
"I'm not a fan of such a strategy, but it certainly gets the job done." His own sort or prideful nature discouraged such a thing, but at least Seth wasn't going to be completely helpless—he knew his way around his pokemon in a battle. "But just so you know, this means we will be having a rematch sometime." He couldn't very well say when, but Sylvester was certain of it. "I'll be training harder 'til then, so you got your work cut out for you if you aspire to win next time." Waiting for a response, Sylvester began to contemplate when might be a good time to leave. Now that their battle was out of the way, it would be best to get moving. Sylvester would make sure he did everything he could so that the next time they battled, Seth wouldn't have a chance against him...

[ SETH ] As the end of the battle processed with Seth, every step of it was visible on his face. He had beaten a powerful Pokemon. Sylvester's Pokemon. He had beaten three of Sylvester's Pokemon. He had beaten Sylvester and won his first official Pokemon battle! It was clear how much stronger Seth's Pokemon had gotten from just this battle.
When Sylvester spoke to him, Seth's attention snapped back to his friend. "Looking forward to it. And, uh, thanks. For the help. And stuff." The battle had alleviated any worries Seth had about challenging the gym, and he felt ready to do it now. Their friendship was invaluable to Seth. Sylvester appeared every time Seth seemed to need him to, and he always came out stronger from their interactions. He was seriously looking forward to their next battle, however far into the future it would be. He was sure he would need something like this again at some point, what with how many gyms there were in Hoenn.
Seth returned his Luxio and Litwick to their pokeballs. He would need to run to the Pokecenter to heal them, but then he would be going straight to the gym! It seemed appropriate to name his Litwick, too, with how valiantly it had performed. How does "Spook" sound? Seth found it fitting.
