[ SETH ] The gyms were a thing every trainer had to do if they wanted any form of respect at all. Really, what was the point of being a trainer if you didn't challenge the gyms? Seth was standing in front of the first gym in Petalburg looking nervous. Pokeball in hand, he was just there. Blocking the door. He was having a mild anxiety attack, one he knew would get much worse upon entering the gym. Most of his apprehension came from the fact that he didn't now if his Pokemon would be able to make the cut. He hadn't even been in a sincere battle yet, so how could he know what to expect from a gym?
Seth had even caught a couple new Pokemon. Only just, though. The new ones he had were fresh catches, completely untrained. His Shinx might be able to get somewhere, but his other two were substantially weaker. No. Seth couldn't challenge the gym yet; he wasn't strong enough. Making his decision, Seth turned around quickly with the intention of going to train on the routes. He felt pretty discouraged right now, and starkly alone. Of course he wasn't ready to challenge a gym leader yet, what a preposterous idea.

As Seth turned around, there was a tall figure looming just behind him. Sylvester could see something was troubling the boy as he stared at the large doors of the gym, turning away from them and towards Sylvester with a mixed expression. "Long time no see." He made sure to speak with a rigid voice, so Seth would make sure to give him attention. "Turning away from the challenge? I take it that means you don't think you're ready yet?"
A soft chuckle escaped his lips. "I felt the same not long ago, don't worry about it. There is always a feeling of unease and uncertainty when facing the unknown. But...you'll never figure out until you give it a try, right?" He made a curious smile. "How would you like to battle me again?" Looking as though he had ill intent, Sylvester retrieved one of his pokeballs and rolled the small orb in-between his fingers. "I've been wanting a rematch ever since my Ponyta lost to your Shinx." A subtle grin now on his face.
[ SETH ] Seth gave a little jump of surprise when he turned around and almost ran right into someone. He was already anxious and did not need surprises. When he looked up, he found mild relief that it was only Sylvester, someone he knew. Well, someone he had recently met. To be fair, they barely knew each other. They had only met the previous day, so not very 'long time, no see'.
In regards to the challenge... Seth had definitely given up--at least for now. He needed to go and train and get stronger alongside his Pokemon. What he didn't need was to feel worse about putting it off. Having it acknowledged by someone he considered his friend made him more uncomfortable at best. What Seth wanted to do was go somewhere (maybe over there by that pond) and relax for a while. Getting over his anxiety right now would be best, but it looked like he wouldn't be allowed that luxury.
With the prospect of battle, Seth's anxiety was rocketing up again. "I-I-I guess s-so, yeah..." It didn't look like Seth was getting much of a choice in the matter if he went by the expression on Sylvester's face. Seth glanced between the man and the pokeball in his own hand. What else could he do? Timidly and with shaking hands, Seth sent out a new Pokemon he had caught, Marill.

Suddenly, Sylvester began to lose his desire to battle with Seth. His grin became a flat pair of lips, and his eyes staring down at Seth with a dull look. "Hmm..." Looking over him and his pokemon, Sylvester began to decided against challenging Seth just yet. "You know..." He wasn't quite yet sure what he wanted to do. Normally Sylvester went all in, but now? Well, the way Seth was behaving made him feel like battling was the wrong choice to make.
"We don't have to battle, especially if you don't want to...?" He eyed Seth up and down, looking for his body language to suggest something. His lips would likely lie, or shy away from the complete truth. 'Is he afraid to battle me? He won last time...' Though, Sylvester knew that one's confidence as a trainer was not decided on the sum of but one batle.

[ SETH ] Oh, no. No, no, no. You don't get to offer a battle and then chicken out. Of course, Seth understood what was going on here: Sylvester had seen him hesitate and then softened. But Seth had agreed to battle, and he was going to. It wasn't really fair to cause an anxiety attack with someone and then twist the situation around. Seth's own reluctance came from a number of factors. He was already anxious about the gym battle, Sylvester had taken him by surprise, Sylvester's own body language had been uncomfortably menacing from Seth's point of view, and Seth was generally inexperienced. He had participated in one battle, one that he knew was more or less fixed in his favor. A genuine battle was enough to make him nervous like this.
In spite of his head telling him to accept Sylvester's suggestion against battling and his heart hammering with his anxiety, Seth took a more commanding stance. It was shaky, but it definitely looked more determined than his previously closed and afraid posture. "No! I want to battle!" He needed to. He needed the experience, in more ways than one. Hopefully Sylvester wouldn't notice (or at least not comment) that his voice had cracked.
Post by Sylvester Blackburne on Jul 14, 2015 2:52:54 GMT
"Are you sure?" With the way Seth's voice cracked, it was obvious he was under a lot of self-induced pressure. While Sylvester initially wanted to battle, it really didn't seem like the greatest of ideas now with Seth's current demeanor. "Well, I suppose that I do have a new pokemon I need to test in battle." Allowing the contents of his pokeball to escape its confines, a pink hairless pokemon stood before Sylvester and Seth. It's face blank, seemingly staring at everything and nothing.
'He never seems to look very focused...' While it may not have been the greatest of trades, Syvlester felt relieved to have a pokemon native to Kanto on his team. It was one of his favorite regions to hear and read about, including it's many fine pokemon. "Well, you can have the first move." He took note of the Marill, having utilized his pokedex to compare the pokemon's typing.

[ SETH ] When Sylvester's own water Pokemon was let out, Seth didn't know how to feel. Initially, his mind blanked; Sylvester had agreed to battle, though reluctantly, and now Seth needed to think of what to do next. After a pause that got more embarrassing every second, the fact that they both had water Pokemon out sunk in. It usually wasn't effective to battle a Pokemon of the same type, was it? He also knew his Marill wasn't that strong, but that's why he had brought it out for battle, it needed to become stronger.
Once he had processed the situation, Seth got into action. "Give it all you've got, Marill! Use Water Gun, then use it again!" Any apprehension from before translated into an appearance of discomfort in the battle. Seth distractedly pulled out his pokedex, attention split between the battling Pokemon and mechanical speech about Slowpoke. Meanwhile, the Marill obeyed right away, sending bouts of water at her opponent. It was her first battle, and Seth was trying not to dwell on that fact. He knew Sylvester had been ahead of him, had trained his Pokemon more, had had the time to do that kind of thing. Most of Seth's Pokemon were fresh catches. Even with Sylvester using a weaker Pokemon, Seth was worried. What would happen when he sent out something stronger?

At least Seth wasn't still standing there in a puddle of indecision. No, instead Seth was now ordering his pokemon to attack Sylvester's own with what must have been one of the few attacks his pokemon knew. Even his own pokemon was weak, knowing only one attack to his knowledge. "Brolaf, dodge and follow up the maneuver with a quick tackle!" Of course, it was surprising now the graceful movement Sylvester's pokemon made. 'Wow, so he can move when he wants to. And he does respond to that name... Though, the speed was short-lived, disappearing right after the Slowpoke's charge.
Likewise, Sylvester just had to see it again. "Use another tackle, Brolaf!" The imminent vigor of the pokemon was incoming, as the Slowpoke made another attempted on fainting Seth's own pokemon. Sylvester really wanted to win this battle to feel better about the trade. 'He is a Kanto pokemon, though...' For him, that was enough to put up with it.

[ SETH ] It looked like Sylvester was taking this battle seriously. Good. That's what Seth wanted, wasn't it? He didn't want a win handed to him, right? The gym battle certainly wouldn't work like that, so Seth needed to get all the real experience he could. Even though they were such weak Pokemon, Seth was getting stressed out. He knew he was over-reacting and it wasn't that serious a situation. Just a healthy competition between friends, right? Nonetheless, Seth needed to give it his all, needed to see what his Pokemon were capable of.
"Avoid its attacks, Marill! And keep up with the Water Gun!" When the Slowpoke moved to attack, it was completely different from its normal, dazed looking state. Seth's Marill, however, could move fast, too. She hopped around, dodging one Tackle. When the second Tackle came, the Marill successfully dodge it as well, but stumbled quite a bit. Seth doubted it would be able to dodge any more attacks. After each dodge, the Marill had also sent more spouts of water at the Slowpoke. Seth knew it didn't have any other attacks, and they were trying their best.

"Oh come on, Brolaf..." The darn pokemon must have decided to throw a fit after he missed twice thanks to the agile maneuvers of Seth's pokemon. "Just get a move on already, use Tackle again." Apparently it was going to starting listening after being hit, seeking out revenge on the enemy Marill without a second thought or response.
"Follow that up and hit'em again after that." Sylvester had to keep the attacks coming if he wanted to win the battle, and Seth's pokemon showed a lot of zeal in its valiant efforts. 'Not a bad pokemon.' With what his pokedex told him, it was also a Fairy type pokemon. Something Sylvester was fortunate to be familiar with as a trainer. 'Seth seems to be doing well on his own. That's good.' He was going to make for a great trainer at this rate.

[ SETH ] The Marill continued to dance around and send water bursts at the Slowpoke. It seemed to be getting clumsier, though, and when the attacks came, it was completely unable to get out of the way. Both Tackles hit and the Marill fell down, looking injured. Seth suppressed a whine at seeing his Pokemon harmed as well as the urge to go help it. They were in the middle of a battle, and even Seth knew it was poor etiquette to end it so abruptly. He needed to get over his fears of harming Pokemon; it was just a fact of life that Pokemon got hurt.
There was no room to grow if they didn't work on it, right. Gotta get through some battles to toughen them both up, no matter the outcome. "Come on, Marill, we can do this! Keep at it!" Getting up off the ground, the little blue ball of a Pokemon charged right back at the Slowpoke, sending more Water Guns its way. It looked tired and spiteful, but kept going, just as Seth asked.

"Don't give up now, Brolaf." His pokemon appeared to be winning this little bout, though as Seth's Marill rose and began spewing out water once again, his Slowpoke rolled over a few times from the force of the water pushing upon him. Once finished, his pokemon seemed to stand up as if ready to fight, though it's movements were sloppy and sluggish.
"Alright, hit that Marill with another two tackles." The moment he spoke, his pokemon took off. However, it did not seem very much ready for the clash. Though the first attempt at a tackle was admirable enough to be considered an offensive strike, the second one did not go so well. As he neared the Marill for a second blow, Slowpoke's front legs gave out, and he skidded forward, likely bumping into the Marill ever so subtly. "Get up, Brolaf! You got a battle to win!" The pokemon's tail propped against the ground, trying to provide extra leverage as it struggled to stand back up...
All the while, Seth and his Marill were free to attack.

[ SETH ] It's a good thing that second Tackle appeared to have failed. Otherwise, Seth was certain his Marill would have fainted. As it was, however, the Marill fell to the ground with the force of the attack and got back to its feet. The effort seemed to be all the little Pokemon could manage; it looked like it could take one more hit from this battle. Seth would just have to finish it up this turn.
"You can do it, Marill! Keep it going!" Seth was already shaken from the battle. He was putting his Marill through a lot and it was stressing him out. Such was made visible by his knitted brows and shaky hands. He was going to finish this battle, though. How could he give up or cut it short when his Marill had made such valiant effort in it? He would have to name the poor thing just for this. No matter what, it was certainly a bonding experience: the Marill fighting its first battle under Seth's command. With any luck, they would win, too!
Sylvester's Slowpoke was getting clumsy and didn't seem to have much more fight left in it either. Maybe if Seth's Marill could just hit it enough times, it would go down. The blue puff-ball of a Pokemon, though clearly exhausted, shot two more bursts of water directly at the Slowpoke. Seth could only hope it would be over in a few seconds and they could change Pokemon. The others he owned could use battle experience as well.

Well, that was about all he could expect from a pokemon he had just traded for. At least Sylvester knew Brolaf would listen to him, and wasn't a disobedient piece of trash. Not that he had expected him to be. Kanto region pokemon were the best in his eyes, and even if he lost, the battle was still well worth it.
"Alright, I won't go so easy this time. Gunther, come on out!" With Brolaf returned to his pokeball, the Swablu came out in the following moments, flying around his trainer. "So, are you gonna switch out your Marill?" He wondered curiously if Seth was going to force his pokemon to fight until it would faint. Sylvester had done that on many an occasion, though he did not take Seth for someone like himself. In the mean time...
"Gunther, use Mist and follow it up with Safeguard." Sylvester would not delay the battle, instead preemptively making sure his Swablu would be safe. That is, from all the pesky nuisances were known to inflict upon their foes. Burns, confusions, poison...Sylvester hated that sort of thing.

[ SETH ] Marill did it. The Marill had beaten Sylvester's Slowpoke. Seth had been fighting with his best effort, of course, but hadn't necessarily expected to win. The Slowpoke had even seemed stronger than his Marill! Seth knelt down and beckoned his Pokemon over as Sylvester sent out another one. He gave the water Pokemon some head pats as congratulation and returned her to her pokeball. Standing back up, Seth took in the next Pokemon he was to battle. He had already seen this kind before: a Swablu. The memory made Seth wince, but he remembered the 'battle' hadn't lasted long at all.
If Sylvester wasn't taking it easy--really? That was supposed to have been "taking it easy"? That Slowpoke had not been an easy one to take down--anymore, Seth would have to do likewise. Of course, he had already been putting in plenty of effort with his Marill, but that wasn't his strongest Pokemon. "Sparks! Come on out!" Seth threw a pokeball into the air, bringing out his Shinx. The little thing looked excited to be here, and just as happy to be participating in a battle.
"Let's keep this going, then." As the pair of trainers had already gotten through one Pokemon each, Seth seemed more sure of himself. At the very least he was getting used to the situation. He still seemed on-edge, but perhaps managing better than earlier. The appearance of his first Pokemon had calmed him down some, as well. He was closest to this Shinx, had put in the most effort with it. She had been his first friend in this region. Use Charge and then Spark, Sparks, let's try out these new moves!" Seth's Pokemon were always growing and learning new things. Sparks being his most powerful, this was a good opportunity to test out some of the things she'd learned on a familiar enough Pokemon.
