Strolling down Route 101 towards Littleroot town, Sylvester found himself literally going back to his roots once more. It wasn't for the fact he wanted to catch wild pokemon here, nor was it the fact that it appealed in the sense of nostalgia. No. He always came back here because this was the place where Sylvester met many new aspiring trainers and pokemon enthusiasts alike. The amount of friends he had made was unexpected, and when he had the free time Sylvester did not hesitate to come walking back towards the place where everything started for him as a pokemon trainer.
Fortunately enough for him, he was nearing the entrance to Route 101 from Littleroot, and in the distance he could see the silhouette of another human making their way towards him and up the route. Grabbing the straps of his backpack and hoisting it up further as it had begun to slouch, he hastened his pace towards the figure, coming closer and hoping they would initiate conversation before he had to. As Sylvester got closer, however, that began to seem unlikely. The enclosing stranger was in fact a girl. 'Play it cool, make her talk first...'
Erica wasn't certain what she expected to feel as she set foot onto Route 101 for the first time as a Trainer; a real, actual Trainer with her own Pokémon and everything. Fred walked beside her, his whole body trembling with contained excitement as he struggled with the simultaneous desire to stay right beside his Trainer and protect her to the end of his strength and his overwhelming desire to run and sniff All The Flowers at once.
Fred was very much a puppy of a Growlithe and it showed. Oh, how it showed.
He noticed the other figure walking towards Littleroot before Erica did, and his contained energy spiked in the form of excitedly nudging Erica's hand, whining slightly to get her attention, which it did, eventually. She looked up and saw the figure and nodded to him, chewing slightly on her lower lip in nervousness.

"Hey there. Looks like you got a pokemon...do you happen to be a trainer as well?" As Sylvester asked the question, a sudden overwhelming feeling of stupidity came over him. 'I forgot to introduce myself, great.' Though he interjected to say more before the girl could do the same. "Oh, right. My name is Sylvester. I'm a trainer myself, is why I ask." With as much as that clear, he waited patiently while reaching for his pokedex in one of the side holsters of his backpack.
Giving her pokemon a thorough analysis, he finally knew what kind of pokemon it was—a Growlithe, native to Kanto region. 'Wow, hard to believe she has one of those." Though he didn't know much about it, every moment near the puppy made him like it more. Though, he wondered how experienced it was, as she wasn't very assertive. Perhaps it would not be the best of ideas to challenge her to a battle. There could always be a next time.

Erica flushed very red when she was asked if she was a Trainer. "Y-yes... uhm... as of today, in fact. At least, I think that's what's happened. It's not like it's Fred's fault..." She abruptly closed her mouth for a moment and took a deep breath. "I forgot to introduce myself... I'm Erica Anne Redwood. This is Fred," she indicated the Growlithe, who was looking inordinately pleased with himself. "It's good to make your acquaintance, Sylvester."
She took a deep breath. "I'm afraid that I don't know what I'm doing yet. It's a condition that will pass in time, I'm sure, but if you are seeking a battle I'm certain that there are toddlers in town who are more challenging than I can possibly imagine being at the moment."
For one very sharp moment, Erica wished the discomfort of gastrointestinal distress upon her father for putting her in this position.

"Likewise, I feel the same." He offered another gentle smile her way, a soft laugh escaping him as she mentioned it wasn't Fred's fault. "Nobody is at fault here. We've only just met." He wondered if she was worried, nervous or otherwise not comfortable at the moment. That appeared to be the case.
"I don't mean to battle you, sorry if I made it seem that way." He slipped his hand into his coat, retrieving a pokeball with his own starter pokemon inside. "I just like to come around here to see what the new trainers are up to. I've met a lot of people this way, so it's a proven method I don't mind reverting to when I grow bored with my spare time." He lobbed the pokeball to the ground before him, watching it rebound in the air and back into his hand as the contents were left exposed before them—Sylvester's first ever pokemon.
"Since I met your first pokemon, you can meet mine. This is Marley, he is a Sylveon." Allowing the soft white and pink coat of fur to roam around, it seemed he was interested in the girl and the other pokemon, going to them and using it's ribbons to reach out towards them in a welcoming gesture, akin to a handshake.
Post by Erica Redwood on Jul 10, 2015 22:56:50 GMT
Fred sniffed curiously at the Sylveon, tilting his head first to one side and then to the other before whuffing in greeting to the other Pokémon. Since it looked to him like he wasn't going to be called upon to defend his trainer's life or honor, he was pleased enough to make friends.
For her part, Erica nodded at Sylvester's explanation. "I'm afraid that I was caught unprepared for becoming a Trainer. I never expected it. Unfortunately, that choice was taken from me by the choices of others. I'm still... adjusting. I apologize if I sound rude or abrupt." She looked, then, at the Pokémon and had to smile, a genuine smile of greeting. "Oh, he's beautiful, isn't he?" She accepted the "handshake" from the Sylveon and her smile widened. "It's good to meet you, Marley. I'm sure you make your Trainer very proud of you indeed."
When she looked back at Sylvester, her smile was still gentle and genuine, and the stiff formality slowly fading. "Yeah, I can see how it would be helpful to visit a place like this, given the fact that every Trainer has to come her to start their own journeys. It's the destinations that are so different even when the starting point is the same."

Sylvester could not help but recognize what Erica had said, something of her becoming a trainer not being her own choice. "What, really? Who forced your hand in becoming a trainer? ...Was it, your parents or something?"'That would be a bummer.' Thinking about it, Sylvester did not know of anyone who had been in a similar situation to Erica. Even Sylvester became a trainer on his own agenda, both parents of his being rather well off and wealthy financially. If that were the case, her parents probably had good reason for it. That, or it was because it would be of benefit to them, one way or another.
Yet, Sylvester was glad she had been coerced into the lifestyle by means other than her own. If it weren't for that, nobody would have been coming up the trail as of yet, and Sylvester would still be exceptionally bored with nothing to do. "Yeah, Marley likes to use it to get all of the attention." Which was what he was trying now, growing bored of being inside his lonesome pokeball so much.

Erica sighed deeply. "Yeah... you could say that. It was my father's idea. I don't..." she paused and took another deep breath before continuing, "I honestly have no idea what that man is thinking at any given point of time, but he got the wild idea to interrupt my life by getting someone he used to work with to pass on an inhabited Pokeball and a Trainer's license to me without any warning whatsoever. Just like when I was a kid, it was all about HIM, about what HE wanted, what HE was studying, learning, fascinated about. I wanted storybooks and fairies and all he could talk about were... freakin' FOSSILS!"
Fred had started playing with Marley, or at least making the initial overtures that would have possibly led to some friendly tussling, but the very real upset in Erica's voice drew him back over to her with a worried whine, nosing her clenched fists and butting her gently on the leg.
Erica quickly knelt down and hugged the Puppy Pokemon. "It's okay, Fred. It's not your fault. You're not to blame because my father's an ego-centric bunghole. You're amazing and sweet. I'm not upset at you, Fred. Don't ever think that even for a moment I would be upset at you because of my infernal father."
Post by Sylvester Blackburne on Jul 11, 2015 21:41:57 GMT
'She certainly seems to have a lot of love for her pokemon...' Which was with no doubt a good thing, though her not wanting to be a trainer showed fervently. "Yeah, I don't think he should have gone about it that way." Sylvester noticed Marley pouting lightly at the lack of attention, moving over to Sylvester and nudging him, holding out his arms for the pokemon to jump up into them. Gently petting back his ears, Sylvester ushered with a 'sh' for the pokemon to be quiet for the time being.
"Though I am glad it was someone like you who got pushed into it. Anyone else, and maybe your Growlithe wouldn't be in such good hands." He flashed a sincere smile before shifting on his feet, turning in the direction of the route headed towards Oldale Town. "So, where were you looking to go? I've been all the way to Rustboro, I wouldn't mind helping you get to where you need to be." The Sylveon smiled and gave out a loud crying "Syl!", seemingly glad that Sylvester optioned to have company on the walk back. That, or perhaps it was glad it was being carried instead of walking. Who could really say?
Erica quickly brushed what looked suspiciously like tears off her face as she stood after a moment. Fred still watched her closely, though he seemed consoled by his Trainer's statements of devotion. "Yeah, there is that. It could be ever so much worse for him and I'll do my very best to be the sort of Trainer that Fred deserves, though he certainly deserves a Trainer who knows more about what they're doing than I do."
She flushed in embarrassment. "I'm afraid that I don't know the first thing about actually being a Trainer. I know that Trainers battle each other, that the Pokémon are the ones who actually do the fighting. I know that there's some sort of circuit that Trainers follow, going from one Arena to another. But I'm afraid that my studies were more focused on literature than battling. I don't quite know where I'm going, either, so any advice and assistance would be wonderful."
Post by Sylvester Blackburne on Jul 13, 2015 6:52:36 GMT
A grimace flashed over Sylvester's face as he caught notice of tears under the girl's eyes. 'Wow, she really must not want to be doing any of this. I feel bad for her...' Fortunately, if it was help Erica was looking for, Sylvester would be glad to give it. Especially if it would cheer her up, even if only slightly, so long as she didn't cry more.
"Yeah, I know my way around here pretty well. Been back and forth between this place and three other cities. Still need to get to Dewford Town, though, when I get around to beating the first two gyms." Which, while he wouldn't brag or make note of as much—Sylvester was pretty confident about his chances. "You should look into catching some more pokemon and challenging the gyms as well. Battling is pretty fun, though I like being out in the wild more than I do challenging other trainers, myself." Giving a little insight, Sylvester gestured ahead, where the route would eventually take them to Oldale Town.
"If we keep going that way, we'll end up in Oldale Town. No gyms there, but from there we take Route 103 to Petalburg City. From there, you take the woods to Rustboro, or ask Mr. Briney just before them at the nearby docks for a ride to places like Slateport City, or Dewford Town." A mouthful, but likely anything said that sounded reassuring would comfort the girl at this point. She was determiend to give it an honest effort, though, which was touching. Sylvester hadn't quite met someone like Erica, she was a first for him.
There would probably be a lot more time spent between the two, as he would feel bad for leaving someone like her out on her own with not so much as a clue where to go from here or there. "I can help you train your pokemon sometime, when you feel more confident about your skills as a trainer." Giving a sincere smile, he motioned with his hand for them to get moving. "But until then, we can just get to know each other. Did you happen to have a favorite pokemon? Or did you not know that much about them up until now?" Trying to better gauge her knowledge about pokemon as well, he curiously wondered as to what Erica's answer may be.
Erica nodded as Sylvester explained the directions to the next few towns. "I do need to travel some, see the towns at the very least. I wanted to travel alot, when I was younger and stupid about such things. I thought that maybe then my father would pay more attention to me than to his Fossils. Needless to say, it didn't work. I just wasn't one for digging in the dirt." She took a deep breath. "I kinda grew up with Pokémon and Fossils in equal portion. My father was a Professor, he loved Fossil Pokémon most of all and the idea of reviving them from Fossils... well, yeah..."
She walked with Fred on one side and Sylvester on the other as she talked, traversing the Route slowly. "I don't know that I really have any one favorite Pokémon. I read about them, but stories, not battling. Not how battling is actually done. I love stories, the telling them, the crafting them, the way we remember things better as stories. I want to write stories, someday, that really stay with them, you know? Stories worth remembering."

"Yeah, I think I get what you mean." It was touching to hear the girl's dreams and aspirations to appeal to her father, even if in the end they were wasted. It still all brought Erica to where she was now, with Sylvester to help guide her on this new and exciting path waiting before her. "It's a shame your father didn't help you prepare more for this new way of life. Don't take it the wrong way, but I feel sorry for you." Which was actually a good thing for Erica. 'I have to help her no matter what.' She was going to be taken under his wing, and would find her journey much easier made with him there to help every step of the way. At least until she was more comfortable out on her own, which Sylvester had hopes she would be in due time. A pokemon trainer couldn't rely on someone all of the time.
"I'll teach you how to battle sometime, though. Not just by battling you, but through example." It would probably be best to show her how to go out and capture other pokemon, though that would start with the battling part anyway. It was good for him that such an activity wasn't going to be a complete waste of time. 'Even my pokemon still need to get better at battling...' Even Sylvester could admit that it was him who was part to blame for such a fact. Pokemon were usually only ever taking orders, which meant some of the fault rested in Sylvester as the trainer. That much was certain.
"What did you want to do until then? Not far from here is Oldale Town. We could rest up there, and then head to Petalburg City. I won't leave you until you're alright with traveling alone. Don't worry about it being a burden, or anything. I'm glad to help." Somewhere deep down, Sylvester genuinely was happy about all of this. While he was brought down by the thought of her father being so negligent, it relieved Sylvester to know that he could be of some assistance to Erica.
Erica nodded. "Yes, I think I would like to learn how to battle properly. After all, if I'm going to do this, I need to do this well. Fred deserves nothing less than that." She smiled at her Pokemon, who was first bounding forward to investigate the path in front of them and then rushing back as if to report that it was safe for them to proceed.
She nodded at his suggestion. "Yeah, I'd like to take the time to see the towns as I travel. I never had much excuse to do any sightseeing before, might as well take full advantage of the opportunity, y'know? If... if nothing else then I can see other places and maybe make this journey my own. See whether I actually have any aptitude for this sort of thing."
She took a deep breath. "Thank you... for helping me. I am very grateful." She didn't quite understand why her face chose exactly that moment to flush a bright red color, but she supposed it was probably embarrassment over needing the help in the first place.
Post by Sylvester Blackburne on Jul 19, 2015 8:58:46 GMT
"I agree, might as well make use of all the traveling you're going to be doing soon enough." It was good to hear that Erica was already beginning to look at things with a little more optimism. He then heard her saying her thanks, turning around only to see her blushing. He looked away at that moment too, beginning to blush himself. He would speak to her whilst keeping his face to the trail ahead to hide his own blushing, and also sparing Erica any added embarrassment from looking at her too long while she blushed, not to mention while blushing himself.
"I think you'll like it soon enough, don't worry. Might take a little time, but you should get accustomed to the lifestyle eventually." After all, Sylvester was free to do as he wanted all the time as a trainer. It was more a self-imposed lifestyle than an occupation. It really was too bad Erica couldn't say the same. Being forced to do something by your parents was never fun.
"Don't worry, you can thank me later when you realize how glad you are you became a tainer." Hopefully Sylvester would not eat those words. He hated being wrong. More than that? He hated seeing such good people getting bad treatment in life. Erica deserved do much better, and Sylvester would do his best to give her what he could...
"What kind of pokemon do you wanna catch?" An inquiry to get the two of them off of the subject.
