"This is no good..." The brown-haired boy paced outside the Petalburg Gym, contemplating whether or not to take up the challenge. His pokemon were improving, but he had no idea what a Gym battle was like. If it was anything near the Elite Four, then he would be in for one helluva struggle. He needed to find an edge if he was to stand a chance.
But everybody who walked out today had suffered a defeat and offered no comment before hurrying away, or were too busy on their PokeNav discussing their victory to stop for a stranger. Dmitri was beginning to lose his patience.
But the look of the trainers who'd lost... they appeared so humbled, and yet broken at the same time. As if even after all their preparations, it still hadn't been enough. Dmitri didn't want to feel that way, not after all the heart he'd put into training Broski and the gang.
"I'll just come back later, after I've had a bite to eat..." He stormed off, frustrated with himself and his perpetual indecisive attitude. He ended up patronizing a hot dog stand just beside the Poke Center. Perhaps I'll run into someone here... But the place seemed relatively vacant; it wasn't unusual for trainers to be off battling wild pokemon for the peak hours of the day, only to come back in the evening with nearly an entire team of fainted pokemon. It used to be me.
"Darn, today isn't going at all like I'd hoped..."
"Why's that?" The voice would be foreign to the downtrodden male but innocent enough. The source of the sound would come from behind the male, being the green haired female passing by the gym area. It wasn't unusual for her to intrude on someone's conversations or thoughts. She didn't act she had and no one really called her out on such a thing. But when she heard what the male had said, she couldn't help but intervene.
Syndra had just come from her morning run around Petalburg and heading back to the Pokemon Center when she encountered the male. Knowing the feeling of disappointment and things not going well the female wanted to see if she could help the stranger. That and the scent of the hotdogs at the stand caught her eye. Her hesitance to buy such overpriced but delicious convenience was well warranted as lately she had nothing but pokemon center food but she couldn't convince herself to use the scarce amount of money she had. Instead focusing on the brunette, she tilted her head in curiosity. "Did something happen?"

"Uh-uhm..., hi." Again with the strangers. They had a way of introducing themselves here in Hoenn. It's not all that unusual, Dmitri, you're just feeling out of your element. Indeed he was; this place was unlike the motherland. Everything was strange, foreign. But then again, so was he.
"I'm just having difficulty deciding when's the right time to challenge the Petalburg Gym." It didn't seem like there was much shame in his situation. He could explain it knowing they wouldn't think much differently of him. It's a perfectly reasonable question to ask yourself.
"I mean, how can I know without trying, I guess?" They don't exactly tell you these things, how to beat a gym leader. It was part of the challenge. Dmitri didn't care for much but making sure he at least tried his utmost.
"Ohhhhh?" Syndra hummed as her lips curved into an O shape to drag out the sound. With her hands behind her back she smiled hearing the male's predicament. It didn't sound like a problem at all and he just unsure of himself. Making that decision shouldn't have dictated if his day was going as he hoped... that just sounded silly. As for his hesitance the girl overlooked that for the most part. Thinking back to her own challenge she had over prepared her own pokemon so it wasn't too hard for her.
Thus she shrugged as she made eye contact with the man. "Why not? The gym isn't too hard" she finally chimed as she tilted her body to the side innocently. At the question Syndra rose a brow as usually people gave their own name before asking for others. It didn't bother her much but it was strange. Giving a charming smile she replied, "Name's Syndra. What's yours?"

"But I don't have any Fighting-types... don't most people take a few ringers in when they challenge a Gym Leader?" He paused, wondering if it was fair to assume this much. It only makes sense, most people don't want to show up ill prepared. But Syndra seemed to believe differently, perhaps from experience.
"So does that mean you've challenged Petalburg City's Gym Leader?!" Dmitri stared with a little disbelief, wondering if it was too good to be true. But there must have been people streaming through Petalburg regularly from all the novice trainers he ran across back in Littleroot.
"I'm sorry; My name's Dmitri." He gave a light bow of his head, appealing to Syndra's formal approach. That was a little rude of me. There was no sense apologizing though, since she hadn't blown it out of proportion and made it an issue. She's kind. Nothing like Andrea.
"Do you think there's anything unusual I should look out for?" Like any unusual moves or abilities of the Gym Leader's pokemon? There was much and more he wanted to know before he felt confident challenging Gym Leaders. Whether or not Syndra divulged his curiosity was another matter entirely.

The comment made Syndra hum in thought. Did she have something like that when she fought the gym or before the attempt? There was some memory of thinking along similar lines. It was the encouragement of someone else that got her to do otherwise. Parting her lips to reply she was stopped by his inquiry. It was unexpected and startled her a bit but she ended up responding to the later question. "Um, yeah." Reaching into the bag slung on her side, she took out a small rectangular container to reveal the badge resting inside as it to prove she had it.
He now provided a name for himself to which the female nodded in understanding. He apologized and all as well which was nice. It was likely an honest mistake. "Don't worry about it. It's nice to meet you," her voice was almost acting as if she was singing those words in a sing song tune even though she wasn't. Closing the small badge case after a bit to place it away she finally was able to provide some insight and supply something in regards to his previous worries. "I didn't have any fighting moves either but if your pokemon are prepared I don't think its too hard. Just trust your pokemon."
She shrugged. The inquiries were warranted and what she expected from an eager trainer. He didn't seem like a bad trainer either and just needed that push to challenge the gym."Not really. The battle was singles with three pokemon each. Slakoth was his strongest pokemon against me if that helps?"
No worries. If you dont think I responded and I'm in the cbox then poke me as well.

"Oh good, then maybe Broski and the gang stand a chance!" Oh man, I'm so pumped! Syndra was just the person he'd been looking for, and it left a satisfactory smile on his face that he'd met her. She's not fooling either, she has the badge to prove it. Syndra must have been a top notch trainer.
"He uses a Slakoth? Don't those have truancy issues?" Why would he risk using a pokemon that wouldn't obey him? He wondered if the power of the pokemon was that exceptional. Dmitri shook his head, bringing himself back to Syndra.
"Thank you for your help, I think I'm going to go challenge Norman straight away!" He was already running off, without even saying as much as good-bye. It was getting into the late evening and he didn't want the Gym Leader to go home for the day before they'd had a chance to battle.
Remembering himself, he turned around mid-gallop and shouted back to Syndra. "Thank you, Syndra; Goodbye for now!" He was bounding for the doors, ripping them open and slamming them shut behind him before Syndra had a chance to say much else. I hope I see her again. She was an inspiring person, and had helped him muster the courage to dare challenge a Gym Leader.
I was thinking about continuing the thread, but this is exactly the sort of thing I see Dmitri doing. Rushing off before you're probably finished talking with him.
"Broski?" she repeated the strange name in a questionable manner. She assumed it to be the name of one of his pokemon but it wasn't exactly normal. Nevertheless she nodded at the male's assertion at the ability truant. It reared its head rarely in her own gym battle but that was a bad comparison. Her gym battle had gone by relatively quickly. When he called he was going to challenge the gym and sped off Syndra turned to look after him. She didn't follow or pursue as the resulting dash was too sudden for her to react to.
"Hey wait!" she called out while instinctively raising her hand to see if she could stop him. He didn't even ask about any of the other pokemon. He actually did pause if only for half a second to thank her but shut himself into the gym before she could get another word in. "Geez..." she mumbled to herself as she placed her hand to her waist. "Good Luck then I guess," she said absentmindly to no one around her, hoping that Dimitri would do well in his battle.
