Purpose is a word not entirely understood by him, maybe once he had a clearer idea of something he wanted to do. He has power, and enough wealth to live comfortably he can do enough within reason, but still there's nothing truly keeping him here. He punches the wood fists and feet wrapped in bandages as to protect his knuckles. He's in a secluded area of the woods practicing his arts the sound of fists and feet crashing against wood echo throughout the trees. Beside him a smaller pokemon mimicking his master's movement on target much smaller matching his size.
His movements haven't changed still just as powerful as he was a year ago, and therein lied his issue, he should have gotten even stronger, putting in the time and work, but there's something he lacks. He knows exactly what it is, but refuses to admit it. His good for nothing parents told him long ago what it was he needed to grow stronger, he thought it was a ridiculous notion then even more ridiculous today. One final swift punch shakes the branches of the tree his fist guided by annoyance now.
He watches Riolu now the pokemon alleviating his own anger. Even if he wasn't growing as he'd like Riolu most definitely was progress showing every day. The boy grabs his towel and t-shirt drying himself before sliding the loose shirt on and tying his hair back ready to continue on.
Syndra found herself clenching her right wrist with her left hand lightly as if trying to work a kink out of it. Earlier that day the female found herself being dragged along route 101 by a hostile ranger due to some misunderstanding. One that she was glad that was cleared up. It didn't help the soreness that was in her wrist though. Humming as she focused on that rather than where she was going, she eventually realized that she did not take the correct road which would be a straight shot to Petalburg. "How did I even get off path..." she mused to herself as she lowered her arms.
It wasn't long after that she began hearing noises of exertion and sounds of impact. It caught her attention and with her whimsical personality she pursued the source to discover the cause without hesitation. Skipping over around a few trees soon the sight of the unfamiliar face appeared along with the small pokemon. "Poor tree..." Syndra stated aloud with her voice loud enough to draw attention and let the strangers knew she was there. Maybe she just felt bad because it reminded her of her own pokemon

He doesn't turn the voice not even prompting a turn. "It's served its purpose." The trainer adjusts his t-shirt stretching only now half way turning to face the feminine voice pink eyes eyeing the girl casually. Riolu done with his own training for the moment turns to face the other trainer as well giving a quick bow to the girl the action serving as a greeting.
"I didn't expect company so far off the beaten path, you don't strike me as a pervert so what brings you here." His voice holds no coldness, or even superiority the trainer eyeing the girl while he finishes his cool down exercises. The man makes no effort to hide the fact he's sizing her up.
His response to her comment didn't strike her as pleasant. The purpose of trees were to serve as the habitat of pokemon and cleanse the air wasn't it? Not to beat up. Then again cutting down a tree to make a training dummy to beat up with probably worse in retrospect. Thus she shrugged but she did notice the fighting type from the corner of her eye bowing and waved back to it. There was no use arguing or saying anything further about it.
Delicately placing her hands behind her back she replied to the strange comment to give him an answer. "Ah. I wasn't watching where I was going and got lost." The fact that he was looking her over didn't bother her. It was her that intruded on whatever this was. It wasn't like her to get embarrassed because of something like that. "I heard some noise this way so I decided to investigate after that. I'm guessing you're training or something."

"I didn't think experienced trainers like yourself got lost, you have relatively powerful pokemon with you I'm sure." He nods Riolu over now looking towards his belongings. He listens to the girl quietly eyes focused on her entirely, now an idea having formed, if she was indeed as experienced as he thought she was. "Was." He corrects immediately slinging a small bag of belongings over his shoulder.
"You have pokemon, far stronger than this little one." It's not much of a question as it is a statement. "It seems luck has thrown us a bone today, and letting opportunities like this slip would be disgraceful. "I'd like to challenge you to a quick match." I'm sure this little one is eager to show off anyways.
The mention of her skill leveled lowered her gaze and her innocent exterior shifted to somewhat more serious. She hadn't acted as if she was superior or revealed any of her pokemon. How did this person realize? Shaking her head and smiling she spoke again. "I've just been journeying for a month now. I wouldn't call myself experienced." This wasn't her being modest but more honest. Compared to the average trainer that started around the same time as herself then perhaps this was true. She couldn't say anything else other than that.
Whoever this person was had come off as somewhat rude. Pushy even as he antagonized the green haired girl. That being said she wasn't spiteful in the slightest so when the challenge came up she sighed. "I don't think that's a good idea but..." when trainers locked eyes they were bound to the requirement to battle each other. Syndra found herself unable to decline the challenge and he wanted to fight one of her stronger pokemon. Thus she would oblige. She needed to see if her Sandslash was still acting disobedient. Throwing the pokeball out for the ground type the quill pokemon appeared swiftly. The pokemon gave a huff at the sight of the smaller pokemon and stood there non aggressively. "Feel free to try to get her to move."
[attr="class","idfc3"]Practicing techniques against tree
[attr="class","idfc4"]
"Thank you for your time, and indulging me." The ranger giving the girl a small nod before ordering his pokemon on the offensive. "Go for a quick attack twice over." The small blue pokemon wastes no time blasting forward in an attempt to take down the much larger ground type. In truth this was to teach his Riolu humility, perhaps a lesson he could use himself knowing loss was important, it may not be technical but the pokemon needs his pride broken, soon a need for strength would make itself apparent in the pokemon.
"My apologies for forcing this on you." the trainer comments casually knowing it would be over soon one way or another.
"No, no it's alright." In honesty she had a suspicion that the battle was going to end up in his victory with her pokemon still defiantly not attacking weaker pokemon. If anything she expected the stranger to think at the end of this that she was actually a terrible trainer. As the first orders were given the fighting type had struck true on the ground type who took the attacks without batting an eye. Sandslash brushed off the attack with ease. The only sign that she was interested in this was her eyes following the movements of the smaller pokemon. To this Syndra shook her head. Not what she wanted to see. "Sorry to say I don't think my Sandslash is too keen on fighting your Riolu though."
The Sandslash huffed as if to affirm this statement. "Oh really? Not even like a poison sting or something?" The ground type shook her head. She wasn't interested but at least the pokemon was communicating. "Think that's enough of that then. Sorry about this."
[attr="class","idfc3"]Practicing techniques against tree
[attr="class","idfc4"]
The fighting type continues to bash into the ground type pokemon to no avail. The pokmeon was treating the small aura pokemon like a joke each time the aura pokemon struck harder and harder in some kind of an attempt to force the ground type to strike back. His trainer says nothing watching the pokemon, in truth this was better than he could have hoped for. A minute or two passes the ground type still refusing to battle. Riolu may have won technically, but something far more important was injured in this match. The pokemon's pride was broken down and he was embarrassed by his opponent. It was a slight against the fighters honor, a slight that would force the pokemon to reevaluate his on strength, and lead it to get even stronger.
With this the ranger decides to recall the Riolu "I may have won out of technicality, but I couldn't have hoped for anything better." He slides the fighting type's pokeball onto his belt hidden by his long jacket. "Don't apologize I needed him to lose, in a way that caused him to doubt his own strength." His eyes once again analyze the female trainer, before speaking once more, "To a fighter pride, and honor are what guide us. You're pokemon by refusing to fight did both, this will motivate Riolu to get even stronger." He smiles now,
"I challenged you with the intention of losing, but obtained something better a meaningless victory."
It just looked sad. Sandslash was making the hard working fight type's efforts into a joke. Not that anyone was laughing. Syndra recalled her Sandslash right as her opponent recalled his own pokemon, having already stated her forfeit. His words however were questionable. The female raised a brow in confusion. Though he explained it in a manner that made sense it didn't feel right. Perhaps it was due to being a person that didn't appreciate being looked down on. Then again she could understand trying to be stronger when an opponent doesn't take them seriously not that she wanted Sandslash to be that opponent.
"Ah. I'm still sorry for my Sandslash's behavior. One day she'll learn better," she replied as she placed the pokeball away into her belt. "And I've disturbed you without even introducing myself either, but I'm glad I was able to help with something. She paused on the realization. She really didn't give her name. I'm Syndra by the way"
[attr="class","idfc3"]Practicing techniques against tree
[attr="class","idfc4"]
The girl still insists on apologizing for some reason not that it matters in the end. In truth he was just using her a fact he's mentioned to the girl already. " Five minutes prior you would have been a disturbance, but you happened to come at the perfect time." The girl then introduces herself leaving the man to do the same, "Ven Lyons, a pleasure." There's no indication in his tone or his expression that it was truly a pleasure, but the man spoke no lies thus far. A little small talk before parting ways wouldn't hurt either, and so he decides to stay and chat for a moment nothing of importance waiting for him today.
"So what brings a trainer far outclassing the pokemon in this area to a route where you'd typically find only beginners, I doubt you were picking on weaker trainers, you're far too soft for that." His smirk grows ever so slightly as the lone pokeball on his belt rattles almost demanding a continuation of the match. A demand that would be ignored.
As the male introduced himself the girl smiled to him. He seemed like a nice person despite his lack of expression change or the like. The mention of picking on weaker trainers gave the girl bad memories of when she had first started her journey. Shaking hear had at the mention of it to get it out of her head she tried to remember why she had come back to the beginning routes. "I had gone back to Littleroot to visit the professor at the lab. I wanted him to check up on a newly hatched pokemon and get some advice."
The fact that the male continued to talk to her struck her as a bit odd. He seemed like the type that wouldn't much talk to people if he could help it. Or maybe that was how she thought he'd be on initial contact. Nevertheless she shrugged lightly. "And I wouldn't say outclassing. You can fight strong pokemon anywhere you go as well as weaker ones." There were several times she had met wild pokemon on this particular route that were formidable. Not that she was actually looking nowadays."What about you? Wouldn't training in a gym or something be better than out in the middle of nowhere?"
[attr="class","idfc3"]Practicing techniques against tree
[attr="class","idfc4"]
He'd thought about going to a gym, but too many people would simply distract the fighting type pokemon, and so he'd chosen to train outside of Petalburg this morning. Here the pokemon would be able to focus alongside the trainer and practice at its fullest potential. It'd also be a shame wasting such a nice day. "Too many people will distract Riolu, there's also something to be said about training in nature. It's philosophy he's held since his youth.
"Is that so, regardless It's time I take my leave, again I appreciate the match."
That Syndra could not debate or deny. While she did suggest going to a gym, she would never do such a thing herself for a similar reason. Too many people and eyes of strangers would make her feel uncomfortable and gyms usually had this bizarre odor. Thus she always did laps around whatever city she was in with her pokemon instead. Her pokemon were showing improvements due to it so she couldn't really much complain. Plus the scent of morning dew and pine did make the exercise better. "That makes sense," she ceded.
He said something else which confused her as to what he was referring to. Yet it went back to her original idea as he followed up with attempting to part ways. It was what she expected so she wasn't upset. "Oh alright. I'm glad it was of some help," she stated once more.

[attr="class","idfc4"]
He waits for the girl to finish her final words before disappearing into the brush quietly. Chances were he'd meet the girl again down the line, but it mattered to him not. No, the only thing currently on his mind was the pokeball in his hand now. The orb shaking and rattling Riolu still not having given up yet it's will to fight almost destroying the pokeball itself. He was slightly impressed, by the act but obedience needed to be understood, and so the Riolu would soon.
In the distance the man can see Petalburg city his next destination, no word from the rangers at base about any sort of mission. As such he was traveling no goal in mind, other than to strength his pokemon, and foremost strengthen himself.
