Julius was still a little bundle of anxiety at this point, unable to absorb himself in any of the activities. At times like this he had to hate his mind for thinking of all the little possibilities, all the tiny things that could go wrong. So it wasn't much of a wonder that his hat had slipped off his head- the little trinket of his hipster get up falling behind him as he walked in a different direction.
It wouldn't have made much of a difference (expect maybe Julius freaking out ofr a bit at losing one of his possessions afterwards) if it had disappeared quietly onto the floor, but instead it rolled right off Julius's back and hit the unsuspecting toe of someone heading out of the restroom.
Julius paused, realizing suddenly that his head felt a little lighter (was he getting that nervous?) . He reached out a hand to check, and when he found the hat missed he turned around to try and find it- the sheer amount of people making it a little difficult to see right, added on by the fact that it was slightly hazy without his glasses.

"Ahhhhh!~ I feel much better after that." Dmitri had abandoned Usagi halfway through their conversation; the attempt at asking Usa to dance ending a miserable failure so he sought refuge in the men's restroom to ease his anxiety. I wish I wasn't such a wuss. Sometimes he felt the onset of courage enter him, but when he got close to his goal, it all seemed to fade from him in moments.
"Now, where was Usa's table at..." He left the bathroom, snagging his foot against something as he stepped forward. It was slippery and his foot lost its traction, sending the hat flying elusively away into a mass of crowding feet and Dmitri to the floor. He landed on his jaw, which felt sore and ached beyond anything he'd ever felt.
He spotted the culprit a few feet away, a fancy hat that was being scattered about as Dmitri looked on with malcontent. My jaw... it hurts so bad. His hand reached to it, clasped against his cheek and tried soothing the trauma. Someone would answer for this, or his name wasn't Dmitri!
By the time he got to his feet, he realized he too had lost something. The source of his anonymity, a mask in the appearance of a Hawlucha. "Who's hat was that!? Nearly broke my ja―Ow-ow-ow..." His shouting toned down to a faint murmuring as he winced at the jaw fracture.

Julius didn't see his hat, or he might have gone for it first instead of the person on the ground. He wasn't usually selfish, but he really, really liked that hat.For now, though, when he saw Dimitri sway and then sudenly fall forward, he reached out his hand to try and steady him- but he was a little to late, and the man fell to the ground, his jaw practically hammered by the floor and gravity working together.
Julius let out an audible wince and bent over, his hand reaching out the the man on the ground.
"It was, ah, mine," he answered, a little sheepishly, attempting to help the man up, while quickly taking in his features. He realized his mask had fallen somewhere on the ground and, self-consciously, Julius checked his own pidgeot mask to be sure he hadn't suffered the same fate. Thank god- the uncomfortable little thing was still there, itching away at his skin.
"Sorry about that, man." Julius was quick to apologize, seeing as to how he wanted his hat first and foremost. "You saw where it went, though? The hat?" he asked, trying not to sound to hopeful as he ignored the man in favor of searching the floor with his eyes, wondering where it could have gone.

"O-uhm... over there." He pointed a few yards forward to his left, where sure enough a hat bounced off someone's careless dress shoes and started its way back towards them before being knocked around and away again. What a bunch of asshats. Manners weren't his strong suit, but nobody hear was much of a virtuoso either.
"Y'know that really hurt! And now I lost my mask, too..." I hated wearing the thing anyways. He had the feeling this person was genuinely sorry, despite the lack of any apologetic response. His awkward yammering helped him conclude that, remorseful or not, it hadn't been his intention at the very least.
"I'm Dmitri, by the way." He tried to shove his way towards the hat, almost expecting the stranger to follow. I want to see what this doofus looks like in the hat, then I'll decide if I want to let him off the hook so easily. Dmitri wasn't one for brooding typically, but he had just been publicly humiliated. Or at least he might've been, if anyone cared enough to pay attention.
"What did they make the floor out of, rock?" A hand still cupped his cheek, the left side of his face swelling into a disproportionate figure. Dmitri didn't realize it, but he was beginning to look like some sort of clown. I think I need to get this checked.

"Oh..." Julius said, and then he mumbled a more sour "Oh" againt as the hat continued to be trampled all over by the feet of dancers and servers alike- tossed here and there with every step and beat of the music. Julius cringed each time. "What wonderful guests we have at the gala," he remarked sarcastically, giving Dimitri and exasperated look as he walked over to pick up his accessory, making a point of dusting it off.
"It's probably been under ten different boots by now," he said, sighing. "Sorry about that." He offered an apologetic smile to the brunette, and put his hat on, the little thing making him look like a hipster- too bad instead of his usual glasses he was wearing a dark brown pidgeot mask. "You can call me Julius."
His eyebrows raised at the remark and he cracked a smirk. "Well I doubt they made it out of water." He then saw the red portion of his cheek starting to throb and grow like some hideous bruise, and Julius's expression turned into that of a held-back chuckle.
He could only hope that the stranger wouldn't notice.

"Y'know, it's not nice to laugh at another's pain." He glanced at Julius, happy to have made his acquaintance save for the amusement he gleaned from his suffering. Let alone it was at Julius' behest, it was cruel to make a laughing matter of it. Still, he's trying to hold it in. That counts for somethin'. He was quickly getting glares for not wearing a mask, like the rest of the crowd.
"I suppose I should try to find it, even though it's probably shattered in a few places." He spotted the crumbled beak, tarnishing the otherwise pristine floor. Well, that solves that problem, partly. It wouldn't be worth trying to find the rest of it, the piece was ruined.
"So, any idea why we're wearing the masks, anyways? They didn't say this was supposed to be a masquerade as far as I recall." Did it seem suspicious to Dmitri? Of course; but he wasn't one to question over the pettiest things, especially when this sort of ordeal was considered normal. But now that the matter had been brought to his attention once more, he thought on it deeply.
It didn't help to ease these suspicions when a server came 'round with a replacement, this time a Swinub. Yeah, they care about these a little too much... He placed it over his head, becoming Broski's doppleganger. Hopefully Julius would stick around for a bit of healthy chit-chat.

Now that he had already been spotted, it didn't really hurt to let out a little chuckle- and so he did, laughing a bit before holding a hand up in surrender. "My bad, man," he ammended, lifting himself back up so he could focus better on the conversation. He saw the looks they were getting, and his eyebrows furrowed, obviously wondering just how much of the crowd was made up of magma members today. As much as he wanted to just turn over the whole building and find each of them out, he couldn't- he wasn't that strong. Yet.
His angry, almost intense stare at the crowd quickly turned into a an innocent blink and a light "Huh?" as Dimitri turned his attention towards the masks.
"Not too sure," he said, only partially telling the truth. Sure, he knew many possible reasons why the gala had to be masquerade, but he wasn't exactly sure of any of them. "Maybe the organizers wanted to mess with us," he joked, pointing to his mask. "Arceus knows how itchy these things are." He just finished saying this as a server came with a replacement, and he made a point of lifting his eyebrows, relaxing as the girl went away.
"So," he said, casually eyeing Dimitri, wondering if he, too, was a member of Magma? Was magma even in the formal dance? His source hadn't been quite elborative. "What brings you here?"

Dmitri chuckled, honestly embarrassed by his answer. "I was going to be in the speed dating, but I chickened out last minute. But the food's good reason, too." He was thinking back to Usa at the table, alone with Broski and Leonidas keeping him company. Oh shoot. He'd forgotten about them, preoccupied with the conversation at hand. Should I excuse myself? He hesitated, uncertain.
"What about you? Trying to woo the ladies?~" He would be coveted by all the madames and madamoiselles if he gave them half the chance. But something about him stood out, was it his unusual choice of clothes? No... The way he seemed to dodge the question, then turn around and pose one on Dmitri seemed evasive. But again, Dmitri wasn't one to question others, so he reduced his suspicions to his doubts.
"I suppose the speed dating is about to start up, soon. I should get back to my friend Usa before he leaves my Broski unattended. It was nice meeting you, Julius. Maybe we'll catch each other later in the evening, and I can give you my number. I still haven't memorized it yet, it was new when I got here. Haha." Dmitri shuffled off, hoping to catch Usa before he left, partly to continue their time together and to be sure Broski was in safe hands if Usa needed to leave for the speed dating rounds.
