there was something about the night time sky that often left micah speechless. he would sit in the grass nearest to the home that he occupied with cil on his chest and his arms holding him up from behind. staring at the sky that was sprinkled with the brightest stars that he had ever seen. away from all the hustle and bustle of city life, in a rural place surrounded by trees and nature. he could smell the grass and the flowers, he could see the stars and enjoy life. there were times where things needed to slow down and you had to take everything in the way that it was. and these were the moments that he cherished the moment. he tucked his nose into his medical mask as well to hide it from the cold.
cil curled up closer to him tucking into his jacket. he patted the pokemon's head and allowed his eyes to close for a second. the familiar warmth that he had grown up with. he wondered when cil evolved, would the pokemon remember these moments. they were the ones that he held closest to his heart. the ones that he could never let go even if he tried. he held cil close to him and allowed himself to curl in around the pokemon ignoring the starry sky for more sentimental reasons. he wasn't a very expressive person, social situations were never his strong suit. but pokemon were great listeners, they were the ones that would hear you even when no one else could and for that reason - he found his love for cil growing every day.
Reubin stifled a yawn as well as a shudder when the night's cold air met him upon opening the inn's door. Nary several minutes before had the brunnette been blissfully sleeping the darkness away when he felts something pawing at his chest. of course when his full conciousness had returned he then noticed the significant weight on his chest. jesabel had appeared to near perfect the art of escaping her pokebal, and following this occurence ruby could only imagine what was in store for him in the future.
the houndour trotted in place almost impatiently as she waited foe the teen to shut the door behind him, mindful of having the key that would allow him reentry. "jes, you don't need me to come with you, do you?" he arched a brow in amusement, causing the canine to stop short of her demanding whines. ah, that was true. reubin was sure if pokemon could bluss then the houndour's face would have been as red as the fire she spat.
he managed to hold back the laugh that threaten to erupt when the creature pressed back her ears and sauntered off into the dark with what little dignity she had left to do her business. he had to admit, the houndour was beginning to wiggle her way into his heart. but even so he could tell she was confused by his actions. they differed when he was alone with her. as opposed to the naive and eager mask he posed in public eye; one of many, when alone he found himself slipping back to the apathetic and calculative male that life had molded him into. it was tiresome, but at the same time necessary.
the more time that passed the more impatient he was becoming. after all he was in nothing but his sleeping attire save for his coat but it hardly offered the right warmth. rather than wait any longer he set out in search of his charge. cursing lightly whenever his shoes caught on some wayward rock in the way. though soon enough he had found his pokemon. not alone but instead sniffing curiously at whatever poor unfortunate soul decided to stay out this late. despite the exhaustion reubin managed to muster up the strength to 'apologetically' scold the canid.
"a-ah! jes what're you doing?!" startled, the houndour retreated back a few steps before landing her eyes on her trainer. giving a cheery yip she didn't waste any time she rushed and lept right for him. "oof!" caught unawares the teen was knocked onto his back.

there weren't a lot of things that could surprise micah. maybe. it depended. he didn't like clowns. but he also didn't like things like this. imagine looking up from cuddling your pokemon only to see a pokemon and its partner most likely getting it on. micah could have died as he noticed the sight and slowly scooted away. cil had fallen asleep and he opened his pokeball so the pokemon would dissolve into it before putting it back into his bag where it belonged. to say that he was disturbed was far too simple, he was confused. slowly rising to his feet and approaching the two - he peeked around and came to notice that the female houndour was only excited. looking from the houndour to its partner, he grimaced slightly behind his mask. great, the weirdo from the lab. now he was a pokemon "lover" and a weirdo times two. he couldn't help but grumble at his luck.
he pulled out his phone and began to type on it before showing the screen to him.
we should stop meeting in this way.
it was his own little joke but he wasn't smiling or laughing. it was embarrassing. why did people constantly have to invade his personal space? although he did feel something sniffing him earlier, it must have been the houndour. he pulled his phone away to type again before showing it.
do you need any help?
it was a simple question but he was more trying to help him so that he could return to his star-gazing and forget this rather horrific display.

well it was safe to say his face was effectively covered in houndour spit. cringing, the teen had managed to push the excitable creature away from his face and take a breather. that was another habit of hers reubin would have to quell, the overly excitable tendencies most dog-like pokemon displayed with their masters. while at times it was flattering to say the least there were others, such as this, in which it was inappropriate. from his position on the grassy earth his vision was blocked by the harsh light of a phone screen, the unexpected brightness made his eyes tear up a bit, squinting to adjust. help? hah, it was a little late for that right now don't you think? was was this guy's name again? marcoh? micho? bah.
"no, i'm fine." reubin winced a little before heaving himself up and dusting stray blades of grass from his apparel. he just wanted to go back to bed. or that's what he told himself. in actuality the shock of the impact was enough to kick his brain back into functionality that at this point sleep was a forgotten aspiration. "and you make it sound as though i make a habit of being tackled by my pokemon..." the brunette deadpanned, still, ruby couldn't help but notice a certain look in his eye that nearly made him feel disgusted with himself but he couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was. nor was he in any frame of mind to want to pursue the thought.
he looked to his houndour. "you need to control yourself jes, kay?" he did his best to reprimand her softly. which seemed to work since the pokemon lowered her head a slight with the decency to look a bit ashamed for acting like such a pup. he looked back to marcoh, "what are you doing out here in the middle of the night anyway?" reubin grew silent, eyes narrowed comically. "you're not some kind of a creeper are you?" because ruby'd had his fair share of encountering perverts and if that was the case he was hightailing away from that situation.

you are more of a creeper than i am. that is my temporary home, and you are trespassing on the property. what does that say for you?
micah raised an eyebrow. honestly, he wasn't someone who would just go after another person for the heck of it. there had to at least be a reason. and his track record for wanting to be around other people wasn't necessarily very high therefore he tended to keep his distance. this was the closest that he had willingly put himself to another person in years actually. heaving a heavy sigh internally, he stepped back from reubin though going to the houndour's side and giving her a gentle pat to the head. she was such a sweet little thing, and didn't deserve to be reprimanded for just having fun. cil's pokeball moved a little and he gave a slight glance to its place in his bag before returning his stare back to the houndour.
she is okay, you should be more allowing to her nature. she is your partner afterall.
he lowered his phone after showing the message and stood away from the houndour called jes. folding his arms and tucking his hands underneath his armpits for warmth, he looked to the starry night sky. it seemed so beautiful now. maybe a tad bit less after the display that he had just seen but ever more so wonderful. he couldn't help but smile a little as one of the stars twinkled.

"that so?"
he said dully, brow raised to accentuate the amused expression at having his quip fired back at him. why anyone would choose to take up residence in this lazy old town he'd never know. nothing of interest happened aside from the passing outsiders who'd come to the professor for a pokemon or otherwise; like himself. then again maybe marcoh was one of those 'praise the silence' types. understandable. since the guy didn't speak a word. he still found that kind of creepy but who was he to judge on personal preference. "the only reason i'm here is because of her."
jes welcomed the pet with a bit more dignity than she displayed beforehand. he held back from almost childishly spouting 'that's mine get your own'. all the while wondering what shape her personality would take when she evolved, knowing full well pokemon were known to change not only physically. the brunette only hoped it didn't mean she'd grow even more unruly when it came to affectionate displays.
"you'd be singin' a different tune if you were the one getting tackled i'm sure." he pursed his lips before sighing. "but yep, she's my partner alright," in that brief moment he let a genuine smile appear on his face. she was his first pokemon, friend even; he'd go as far to say. but her bouts of pupish behaviour made him feel as though he were caring for a toddler rather than a pokemon. "doesn't mean i'm going to let her tackle me even as a houndour. arceus knows i don't need the bruises." the second sentence was mumbled near incoherently under his breath.
looking back to the masked man reubin faulted upon realizing he'd been staring at the sky as he spoke. unable to help himself he cast a look upward to mimic him; seeing nothing of interest really. "you like stars?" he asked, a mild tone of disbelief trickling into his voice. sure they were pretty. many times he'd heard the ramblings of scientists and the vast amount of knowledge that could be gained from them. perhaps even to travel to the planets circling them. but he thought the idea foolish. why bother worrying about other worlds when theirs should be the sole focus.

he cast a glance towards reubin in the corner of his eye. at first he didn't know what to expect from him. he had a sort of haughty attitude as if he had somewhere to go or something to do. as if he couldn't stop and just enjoy life as it was for even a second. but that wasn't his fault in the slightest, the world was constantly changing and you had to hurry to catch up or just be left behind by it. he couldn't hold that against him. but there were times like these when he wondered if the true nature of a person was shown. is this where you really could see their colors and know them for who they are - or even what they are? pulling his phone out of his pocket again, he began to text.
they remind me that life is too short.
it wasn't as if he liked stars because of their properties. the fact that they are seen as wish-granting entities or even that they have some type of higher purpose. he knew about astronomy and that most stars were already dead and the only thing that humans were seeing were the aftershadow of their life. the thought of that made him wonder about his own life. spurring him into this life of traveling from place to place, enduring trial after trial and loving the world around him. taking in everything and being appreciative for the life that he had.
i am not telling you to indulge in her because she is a houndour. the time that the two of you share together is meant to be precious, and should be reflected on happily.
he found his hand touching over the spot in his bag where cil's pokeball was. the memory of receiving the pokemon, the fun that they shared together, the words that he spoke to him. the understanding that he received, all of it piled up in his mind and he couldn't help but look to the stars once again. such reminisce was meant for men in their prime, not a boy who was slowly figuring out life.

"well that's kinda morbid..."
but he supposed that was one way to look at it. it wasn't an untrue statement in the least. when the lifespans of many pokemon came into account the human life seemed so pitifully short in comparison. taking dragon-types as the prime example. speaking of which, didn't this guy have an axew? lucky him. though he wouldn't have said he envied him too much. dragons were known to be notoriously difficult to train as they evolved, far too prideful and eager to display their power at the expense of becoming disobedient toward their trainers. it would have been an interesting thing to experience.
"you must have put a lot of thought into this..." he sweatdropped. how much could one person think about something as superfluous as stars? and why waste that much time thinking about them. to realize the value of you own existence? that just sounded downright depressing to him, contemplating his reason for living. which he scorned to admit he didn't really know as of yet. for so long he'd been surviving as opposed to living. but it got him to see the next day and the day after that so he'd been as content as a combee. reubin's eyes narrowed as he literally stared up into space. he didn't like where his mind was taking him.
"hm." he sighed. "you come of as one of those deep, philosophical types." he managed a huff of a laugh. "don't need to worry yourself over something like that though, jes and i'll have plenty of time to bond, i'll make sure of that. there's a lot of stuff we have to do after all." too right. he was also mindful of the fact he would soon have to make the trip back to lavaridge to acquire a second pokmeon he'd been contacted about. an orphaned one at that. ouch. that hit too close to home. "so what do you do?" he questioned. "aside from astronomy that is." he smirked.
