Hoenn was such a quiet place. River was used to loud noises and bright lights of Castelia City, not this. It was far too quiet for his liking, but his desire to be independent and as far away from his parents as possible caused him to pick up and leave the moment he was old enough to be on his own. But he'd endure the painful silence any day in exchange for enough space from his parents to go on a pokemon journey of his own.
So here he was on Route 101, with one adorable pokemon, two TMs, and five pokeballs on hand, and he was enjoying every moment of it so far. River couldn't wait until he got to one of Hoenn's contest halls and compete. But first, he had to get there, which was proving to be no easy task.
River sent out his brand new pokemon, if not just to admire the creature he was already so proud of. He was so excited to have been handed his very own electric-type pokemon, after spending so many years admiring the electric-type gym leader in Unova. He couldn't wait to train his Electrike. Of course, he was much more interested in Hoenn's contests than anything else. It's why he chose to come to this region, of all places.
"Are you excited, too?" River asked his pokemon, who he had nicknamed Kirin. He wasn't exactly the most loquacious person, but he figured the key to getting along with his pokemon was to talk to them.
The Electrike yipped at his feet, far too excited to be out of its pokeball. It had no idea what kind of trainer it had, but it was excited to be on its very own journey.
"You're gonna be the best contest pokemon," he added awkwardly. Kirin looked up at him in question, not quite understanding his trainer's words, "Ah... forget it..." River mumbled, shaking his head. Kirin yipped again and bit at River's ankle, he may not have understood, but he was excited nonetheless. Whatever his trainer was talking about sure sounded interesting, and he would stay loyal to his trainer, no matter what.

"Oh no! Please keep chewing on my goggles. It's not like I needed them anyway." he stated sarcastically as he looked down to the bundle of fur in his arms who was currently gnawing away at the eye wear hanging around his neck, either completely oblivious to his trainers mild annoyance or could honestly care less. Dex sighed at the thought but couldn't hide a small smile, finding it rather endearing. Of course it would be less cute when the small canine actually managed to break them. He was conflicted. Save his goggles or let the Pokemon continue to play? Quite the dilemma. Either way, he was definitely going to have to try and find Spike something better to chew on if he'd keep this up as he'd like to keep his only belongings not gnawed to pieces.
Now would be the actual training part, right? He couldn't just dote on the poochyena forever. He'd never get anywhere! So as tempting as playing with the pokemon was, it was time to try and get started. But that didn't mean he couldn't hold the pup a bit longer and he certainly didn't seem to have any complaints about being carried. In fact if he didn't know any better, Spike might have been more suited as a lap pokemon rather than a fighter. "You look pretty vicious." he thought out loud as he lifted Spike into better view, simultaneously pulling the goggles out of his jaws. It distracted him for only a moment before he'd look up to his trainer again, tongue lolling out the side of his mouth as his tail wagged. "Absolutely terrifying..." he snorted. He wouldn't have it any other way to be perfectly honest. He fell in love with the pokemon as soon as he laid eyes on him.
But just as he was getting lost in his thoughts, Spike's ears perked as he looked off in the distance, nose twitching. Dexter quirked a brow at the sight. "What are you- Hey!" Before he could even finish, the small dog managed to squirm out of his hold and already bounding off, seeming to be after something. "Shit!" he hissed as he chased after his pokemon, not sure what had gotten into him.
River was completely unprepared when Kirin got up suddenly and ran into the tall grass. What was that silly mutt doing! River knew the Electrike was hardly trained, but he'd figured the pokemon would know better than to run off on it's own. Apparently not.
He sighed and rubbed his forehead, following his pokemon into the brush. His parents would be so proud if he wrote home telling them he'd lost his pokemon the second he left for Route 101 (he could just hear their voices in his head "does this mean you're coming home, then?") No! He had to become a proper coordinator! And he wasn't going to give up just because his pokemon wasn't quite trained, yet. It was the job of the trainer to teach his pokemon how to act, and that's just what he'd do.
But first he had to find the damn mutt.
"Kirin!" River called out. He sighed in relief when he spotted the green pokemon not too far away. "Don't go running off..." River trailed off and raised an eyebrow when he realized his pokemon wasn't alone. There was another dark gray dog pokemon next to him, and it looked like they were in some sort of deep conversation. "Who do we have here?" he asked, more to himself than anything, since he knew Kirin, as a pokemon, wouldn't be able to give him a proper answer.
Spike had run as fast as his tiny legs would let him before he finally managed to find the source of what had got him all riled up. Another canine who'd also caught his scent. But rather than looking for a fight, the poochyena seemed more interested in making friends with the electrike, bowing his head and wagging his tail in a playful manner. The pokemon was certainly far more sociable than his trainer, that was for sure. But he hadn't taken into an account that there was a human with him, ears perking in surprise at the sudden new arrival. Fortunately for the poochyena, he smelled a tad bit like his new friend, evidencing that they knew each other. That seemed to be all he needed, the puppy giving a big bark in greeting, simultaneously revealing his location to his trainer who'd been trailing behind.
Now don't get him wrong. Dexter wasn't mad at Spike for running off. He couldn't be mad at the pokemon to be perfectly honest. However he was just a tad annoyed that he'd nearly lost him, quite fortunate that the dog was far more talkative than he'd ever be. "Dude, you can't go running off like that." he began with a groan. "You about gave me a heart-atta-" he paused when he realized his little pooch wasn't actually alone. He'd managed to find himself a pair of new faces, it would seem. "Uh..." What did he just walk in on?
"I'm sorry.. He just kind of ran off on his own." he finally found some words to speak to the other trainer. "He didn't cause any trouble did he?" he asked out of sheer obligation the pokemon being accused looking slightly offended for a short second before losing interest in favor of turning his attention back to Kirin again. He did nothing of the sort! He only smelled something interesting and wanted to figure out what it was. He didn't appear to be too disappointed either.
