it was getting late within the evening and the stars were just starting to peek out of the night sky. the only light on the path came from the streetlights that had flickered on just a few minutes prior. the noise from the town had slowly died down and were replaced with crickets and whatever creatures were lurking in the forest nearby. evan wasn't particularly worried about running into anything or anyone this late at night who could attack them. he wasn't alone and he wasn't too far ahead of his companion. "you better keep up or we're going to leave you behind." evan called out behind him and jogged in place to stop and wait for the other male to catch up. he could see the figure slowly getting closer despite the poor lighting and a smile sprung on his face at the sight. they had arrived here not too long ago and had basically started over, sending their other pokemon back home and coming to the new region for a fresh start. it was almost like all those years ago where they were just kids just wanting to travel the world. things had been different back then yet at the same time it felt almost as if nothing had changed. they were still young and way in over their heads but with more feelings and experience.
his pokemon came flying up and floated next to his head, surprisingly not trying to land on it seeing as a moving object was not the best thing to land on. "i didn't think you used to be this slow." evan joked once the other got closer and sent a smirk his way, waiting for his jogging partner to start moving before he followed along.
the first thing he feels is the wind against his skin. how it falls from his arms and against his face, leaving trails of its cold that last only seconds before getting replaced. the first thing he hears is the silence that contrasts with shallow breaths and beating hearts. and if he listens closely he can hear the footsteps of the small party he’s following. the first thing he sees are strands of hair, bright red and caught in the fleeting light of the street lamps, casted in warm hues of orange against the dark sky. it’s hard not to focus on it, on the person who attracts his attention like nothing; and he can feel himself slow.
he mouths the word oh when he hears that familiar voice farther away, feels his feet slow even more before speeding back up. it’s not his fault -- or rather, maybe it is. he gets distracted easily when he’s around. more so than before, in different ways that are still a little strange. he finally notices the distance between them and he quickens his pace, eyes locked on the stilling figure ahead of him. it’s his place to run to, like all those times before -- and he smiles when his face comes into light because after all these years and all these changes they’re both still the same.
his smirk has his eyes narrowing, his words prompting a scoff as he runs up beside the red head. “i was giving you a head start. i’d think you’d realize that.” he stops for a second in place, eyeing the boy over with a smirk of his own before taking off without a word. his eyes catch the sight of his poochyena, wagging its tail a ways away, waiting for the two to catch up before trailing off again. “hurry up,” his hand raises but he doesn’t stop, doesn’t look back -- knows that if he did he’ll get distracted again.
NOAH WYSS i cant believe you thought i meant a gif
his jogging went down to a simple step between each foot, his arms lowering down to rest by his side. he didn't realize how far ahead he had ran in front of the other, only wanting to show him up a little. but it wasn't fun to run alone and he had his fill of showing off for now. he was almost certain it would turn into competition between them unless one of them held back from taunting the other. that never really changed between them; the childish competition as they try to one up each other. it was something he did not want to change. it made him think of the old days where the only thing they worried about was the simple things. too much had happened between their years in johto and now, some things he would rather forget.
but there were good things among all the bad; things he would like to remember despite everything that happened. flashes of a tall brunette with a gentle smile, a man with glasses with a determined look, a night filled sky being lit up by fireworks, a mountain covered with snow, and a pair playful blue eyes followed by a familiar smirk went through his mind. a smile came to his face at the memories going through his mind. so caught up in his thoughts he didn't see noah running up until the other's voice broke through his thoughts. his eyes immediately went over and caught the same pair of blue eyes and smirk that he had just been thinking about fill his vision before disappearing.
evan scoffed and turned to watch the other run off ahead. he stared for a second taking in the sight before he was cut off by his swablu flying in front of him before going ahead. shaking whatever thoughts were just about to enter his mind, his legs pushed forward and swiftly brought him closer to noah. he knew the other could hear his pounding footsteps coming closer but he didn't care. "race you to the pond!" a laugh escaped him, breathless from exercise but still managing to express his excitement, as he tapped the other male's shoulder before taking off as fast as he could down the path. "i gave you a head start too!" he called into the wind behind him and ran as fast as he could.
not much had changed between them now that he thought about it.
his eyes catch sight of the canine in the distance, tail raised high and the slight glimmer of eyes reflecting the light of lamps. he’s surprised to see it still in eyesight -- wonders why it’s on its best behavior tonight; and he forces himself not to glance back. he assumes it’s due to evans presence. every pokemon of his has found an affinity towards the boy, something he couldn’t be upset over. he could understand the attraction, fell into it when he was a kid; and since then couldn’t find a way out. not that he would want to anyway.
he can hear the footsteps approaching behind him, another urge to glance back that he subdues. those strands of red and that figure he had stared at were gone for the moment, exchanged for his place ahead of his best friend. he wonders if it’s worth it for a moment, knows he’ll be able to see it all again in a matter of seconds -- but he’s impatient when it comes to him and those footsteps can’t approach faster. a laugh, a challenge, a small tap on his shoulder and noahs steps falter. that view came back and his lips form a smile against his words, “you’re too arrogant.”
it’s been silent besides the noise they make, but quickly there’s a sharp howl -- cut short by the creatures own enthusiasm to continue running ahead. and noah takes this as his cue to keep moving forward. it’s not hard to cut the distance put between them, finding the only problem being his wandering eyes. “what if i don’t want to race,” he says, a quick escape of air leaving his voice low. his arm leaves his side, moves around the other boys waist and pulls him towards him; slows his pace enough to force the other to do so too unless he escapes out of his grasp. “we could just stay like this and go to the pond together.”
NOAH WYSS i don't know what they were expecting. what else would it be?
the wind brushed against his face and hair as he sped down the path. he didn't know what prompted him to suddenly start the childish race between them but he didn't really care. a light feeling of happiness spread through his body as he heard the other call out behind him and the sound of footsteps taking off. it only made him run harder and wave behind him as he tried to speed up. he had always been quick on his feet and if he wanted to, he could probably speed up a bit more and even outrun the other. but instead he didn't. he kept the same pace seeming like he was still trying to race but still going slow enough for noah to easily catch up.
his eyes caught sight of the poochyena running ahead of them and giving a howl into the air. evan laughed and tried to speed up to catch it knowing that it was a playful pokemon. however before he could speed up, he felt the presence of the other male close in. an arm at the waist and the brush of a warm body pushing against his side and he felt himself start to slow down. he could try to break away from the hold and continue their game but he found he didn't want to. his breath came out in light puffs as their pace slowed down enough to where they could walk.
evan raised an eyebrow in amusement as he turned to look up at noah. "what's wrong? can't keep up with me? you've never turned down a challenge before. are you feeling your age already?" his hand rose and placed itself over the one at his waist, holding the other's fingers and giving them a light squeeze in response.
he could feel their pace slow, his breath escape his lips in slower intervals -- and he could feel evan against him where he stayed. it was a little surprising, not enough to hang onto for any longer than it showed; he had half expected the boy to break free, taunt him up ahead and force him to keep up. if it had happened he would have complied, ran like before and probably came in last for reasons he’d keep to himself; but instead, here he was. slowed to a walk with his arm wrapped around the boy, keeping him against him as he did -- and he couldn’t help but think of how strange this whole thing was. how natural it came for him to do something like this.
this view is different than before, attracted to the same things that had caught his attention when he was a child -- twisted in ways he can’t really explain -- and he can feel his expression soften. it’s still too early to say but he’s grateful for this new start, wonders if this is how it would have been if he hadn’t left all those years ago or if that time apart was essential for this outcome. “very funny. you know we’re the same age right? maybe i just want to take it slow tonight.” his words come out low, his breathing returning to normal. “did you ever consider that maybe i just want to keep you close?”
he feels the light squeeze against his hand, something that makes the corners of his mouth raise -- and he pulls him just a little closer to his body. it’s the contrast of temperature that catches him off guard the most, the warmth against his side against the small breeze of night air; it almost makes him forget why they were out here in the first place. “or would you prefer us race? because if so i guess i can let you go.” he says, slowly raising his hand from evans waist, hovering over it as he waited for his answer; reluctantly pushing away the desire to place it back down no matter what is said.
they had been close before and so there was nothing new with the familiar touch. yet somehow it always seemed like a new experience to him; the way the area the hand was touching was warmer than the rest of his body, his heart speeding up just a little more and not because of the run. everything was the same but different when it came to noah. evan though he would be used to it by now with the way they flirt and stand too close to each other all the time but he wasn't. he could feel his body give the same reactions almost like he was standing close and holding noah again for the first time.
his words flow through him bringing a smile to his face as he continued to hold his hand as they walked down the path. when he was pulled closer he went into the touch, leaning against the other's warm body and thinking back to how this all started. the journey to this point had been tough but he couldn't complain about the outcome. the hand lifted slightly off of his waist and the warm contact left him for a second. grasping the hand one more time, he brought it back to his side and leaned closer into the hold. "hmm....i think i would rather..." he trailed off his sentence almost like he was thinking but he already knew the answer to his question. evan rose up slightly and leaned forward to press against the side of noah's face close enough to hear his next words. "race!" the word was said quickly and he brushed his lips against noah's cheek before weaving out of his hold and once again taking down the path. "race me you fucking loser!"
had it always been like this? the question surfaces more times than he would admit, never once asked aloud; not in fear of the answer but simply out of knowing it wasn’t needed. he knows the answer deep down. knows that it has always been evan. as a child he was the only person he wanted close, and when he pushed away he came back. not out of petty regret or boredom but because he wanted the company of the other to help the day pass. when he would talk noah would listen, almost on his toes at what he would say next; and he wonders if evan knows the effect he has on him. how he stands on edge every time his voice falls back into silence.
his heart is beating, far faster than it went while he ran to catch up with the boy -- and it's almost sad how his whole body acts when he’s close. he acts confident, much like those times before -- when things were more confusing and their confessions held back -- but really he’s nervous, even now holding onto him by the waist. he has to rethink his hand placement, go over his words twice before saying them aloud; and even then he still worries. this isn’t like him. he was the boy who preferred the minimum of physical contact and enjoyed his time alone. yet with evan he wants the exact opposite. he wants the attention and the touch, he wants to see how close they can get before he stops him. wants every little foreign thing that comes to mind and it’s all too strange but exciting.
he gets close and noah stops, wonders if he’ll get a kiss -- hopes, rather -- but stills his body nonetheless. there’s no helping it, he’s stunned really, caught in the glimpse of a face that could be seen from miles in a crowd of hundreds. it’s like he’s caught in the headlights, unwilling to move and mesmerized enough to accept his fate. the words catch him by surprise but when registered almost make him pout; his amusement being the only thing pushing it back. he feels lips brush his cheeks and there’s that split second where he follows them forward, ignoring the loss of contact for that moment before standing in silence.
“of course,” he says, and his words come out a whisper as he starts to run after the other. there’s no real complaint, he’ll come in last but at least he’ll be able to see what he wants to look at. even if he wants a little more, had it but sadly let it escape his grasps for the enjoyment of a challenge.
the slightly chilly night air was flying past him as he ran away from noah. he felt the loss of warmth the moment he got out of his hold. it was tempting to have stayed and be close to the other, take in the familiar heat and all the strange yet happy feelings that associated with being around noah. but instead his childish behavior won out, teasing the other with a brief kiss to his cheek and a teasing remark for a chase.
he didn't know what he was doing most of the time. he still didn't know what to think of this situation between them. did they just go with the flow and not label whatever this was between them? he wanted to talk about it; bring up situations and memories that had yet to surface past the occasional remark and awkward conversations but at the same time he didn't. he loved the way it was now. he refused to ruin whatever this was between them.
evan began to slow down once the small pond came into view and jogged up to the shore. it was close enough to where the water could lap against the sides of his sneakers but not completely soak them. jogging with wet shoes on was not what he wanted to do. turning around to watch noah come closer, a small smile came to his face at the sight of the other. yeah... he was happy. eventually he wanted to talk to the other about the things between them but right now he was content to let whatever happen happen. "you're too slow. i think you let me win so you could stare at my ass perv." evan joked yet was not sure if it was entirely a joke...
the loss was going to be taken silently as he came up towards the pond. there was no need to talk about it, and honestly he had let the boy win this one. if he wanted to he could have easily outran him during the last stretch. or, at least, that was what he thought when he watched evan turn around to face him with a smile. yeah, he thought, i could have easily won this. not to mention coming in last had its perks, the main being able to watch evan run ahead of him -- watch as he sped up and moved towards the destination like nothing. it was worth the loss, especially given he hadn’t tried to even place.
he was still childish, his thoughts proved that even now -- and as he got closer he pushed them away, washed away by the current of other thoughts that were much stronger. his breathing comes out in small breaths, pooling warm air against that of the nights, but when evan speaks noah halts for a moment and stares. “i-- no.” his words come out defensive, hears it in his tone a little too late to recall it back. he hadn’t been looking, at least not on purpose; it was all circumstantial. what else was he supposed to see with evan running ahead of him. “i wasn’t.”
his eyes narrow into a small glare, looking away at the pond as he slowly makes his way closer. he stays a step away, watches as the water laps against the edge and backs away far enough that it can’t reach. “plus, even if i was, so what? i’m allowed to do that now, right?”
evan watched as the other came up and couldn't resist the laugh that escaped him at the sight of the other's pout. it was nice to know that no matter what they were still as childish as they were as kids, getting upset when one of them lost at something. to people it was a nice that they haven't matured in the slightest and had a lot of growing up to do. but to evan, it was a sign that no matter what happened between them, they were still the two dumb kids that grew up in olivine city and wanted to see the world.
an eyebrow raised in amusement at the sight of noah defending himself from his comment. it was different to see him being the one to tease noah and get him flustered rather than the other way around. "oh you weren't huh?" his tone was accusing but obvious that he was just joking with the taller brunette. when those familiar blue eyes turned to glare down at the water like it was the source of all the problems in the world, he watched the other with a wide grin to show he didn't believe a word he was saying.
the next statement caused him to pause and take a moment to think. was noah allowed to do that now? he didn't care...and it's not like he hasn't taken a peek as well. they had always been close and now they just...happened to be closer. he still didn't know what to label them. "i don't know if you should." he began and walked over to stand close to noah, brushing his shoulders against the others but not leaning on him just yet. "i mean what if you get so distracted by my ass you ended up hurting yourself. what would i do then?" a playful frown appeared on his lips as he pouted up at noah. turning to face him, he leaned his head against the other's shoulder and quietly pretended to be upset.
honestly it was hard to see why noah had put up with him for so long. his ass might have been the reason.
he can feel evans stare on him. can feel that the boys attention is only on him, and while its something noah can’t help but always want it has him glaring daggers at the waters edge. it’s the way his voice raised when he denied the accusation of staring, how quickly it had come out and screwed him over -- and it’s how he still defended himself afterwards. justifying the possibility of his actions with their current relationship; whatever that may be. it was all of that which made evans starring different than usual, leave him glaring at the water and backing a half an inch away when the wind pushed its surface too close to his feet. when he hears evan speak he turns his head away; and he hates knowing how childish this all seems.
it’s the next part that has him bring his attention to the boy, the brush of his shoulder against his body that makes him raise an eyebrow -- and when it all registers for him noah can hardly believe what he just heard. he’s silent as evan comes over to him, leaning his head against his shoulder with a pout that could rival his own. but what he has just heard had wiped that off his face, leaving an adamant expression in its place. “you’re an idiot.” he says, crude and sharp. he stares down at the expression beaming up at him -- all upset and fake as can be -- before giving the boy a small shove away from him. “i wouldn’t get distracted looking at your ass so don’t flatter yourself.” he rolls his eyes, catches sight of the poochyena in the distance pawing at tide, before glancing back over at evan. “and if i did happen to get hurt i’d put money on you crying.”
his head rested on noah's shoulder as he tried to contain the laughter that was trying to escape him. he was a little shit, always has been and always will be. he loved to tease noah and it always gave him satisfaction to see noah get a little annoyed at his antics and fall along with his jokes. it was probably the same with noah who liked to see him get flustered and turn almost as red as his hair. it was just a thing between them, to get the other to react in a way that made it fun for them to watch and tease even more.
evan laughed when noah finally caught on to what he said and did not resist when he was pushed away from the brunette. gaining his balance quickly, he watched with a wide grin on his face as noah defended himself and threw off his comment all the while insulting him. he deserved it for messing with him but he couldn't say he didn't enjoy the view. evan stood there with a smile and watched noah, acting as if he wasn't loving the sight of him getting angry. he should back off.... "i wouldn't cry, you ass." he definitely deserved that. his eyes narrowed into a glare as he was the one defending himself now. yes he got emotional sometimes but that didn't mean he would cry because noah fell into the pond...which he was kind of tempted to push him in. "it's your own fault if you trip and fall into the pond because you were too busy chasing after my ass. and since i'm flattering myself, you can't look anymore." he turned his body around so he was facing noah and hiding his back. a smirk appeared on his face to show he wasn't serious in the slightest. noah probably already knew. "now you have to walk in front of me so i can stare at yours instead. see how you like it."
it was all karma. he teased evan like this all the time, never once stopping -- find no real reason to as he would watch that face of his brighten -- and unless forced he would continue. on and on until the tables were turned and evan caught him off guard or said something that broke the mood he had made. it was their usual, stupid antics they’ve had since children (or, at least, he thinks it started that early). for others it must have been weird seeing two grown men bicker like kids; but noah didn’t care. never had. because to him they weren’t apart of this world he had made up, one that only let evan in -- one that had, for some time, let in others -- and in that world they could act however they wanted. so long as he was happy.
when evan laughs noah glares, regrets glancing back at the boy because now he gets to watch him smile and beam up at him; and it’s all because evan can get under his skin in a way that differs from others. but when he glares back noah can feel the corners of his lips inch upwards, leaving him with a small smirk to show that the tables turned (if only by a little). it’s not completely there -- an obvious when evan teases more, turns his body forward and smirks right back. but still, it’s enough for him to push back and not defend himself anymore.
“oh please, you would cry if i got hurt. especially if the reason came back to me chasing after you.” he says, stepping forward with a smirk on his face to rival evans. “like all those times i would defend you at school and end up in a fight. remember how you would cry and ask if i was okay?” it doesn’t take much to cover the short distance his push caused them, and when close enough he reaches out to take his face in his hands. “what if i make you walk ahead of me instead? i’ll guide you so you don’t run into anything, and that way i’ll get to stare at something a little better.” he says, moving his thumb just under his bottom lip; and it reminds him of that night in his apartment when this had all started. when all those weird feelings and interrupted moments finally came together.
low blow. he had to bring up the past. evan groaned and tried to will down the embarrassment that came with remembering all the silly things he did when he was a kid. it's like any other person who thinks back in the past and gets embarrassed all over again. he knew the moment noah turned and smirked at him that he had messed up and it was too late to take back what he did.
"i was five! i'm sorry for worrying about you! what was i supposed to do?" evan tried to defend himself but knew it was useless. when he was younger he used to cry a lot. putting that along with looking like a girl with his long hair made him an easy target for bullying. he had never been much of a fighter when he was younger so when the bullies came, he just took it and tried not to cry. it was noah who always came to his rescue and got into trouble for him when he fought off the other kids. evan's feelings were hurt because of the encounter but more so he was worried about his friend.
he felt hands cup his face and he looked up to glare slightly at noah in response to the teasing. he tried to ignore the thumb that was moving under his bottom lip yet like so many times when noah was standing close, he felt his face heat up in response. the tables had turned on him and he wasn't sure if he liked it or not. he would admit that he didn't mind the view. his eyes took in noah's face as he tried to resist shortening the distance between them. "i'd like to see you try. and what if you're so caught up with looking at me that you end up tripping on something?" he took a step closer as well and reached up to take a hold of noah's shirt, pulling him a little closer towards him. "you know how distracted you get."
