[attr="class","boneshatter3"]The pokétch said 1:04AM.
Bunny couldn't sleep. She didn't really know why, maybe it was excitement, or maybe it was the sunken feeling of homesickness dwelling in her belly. Either way, she didn't really want to overthink it.
The pokémon centers, no matter where you when by Bunny's understanding, always had free or cheap rooms for travelers to rest in. Bunny took liberty of the one in Oldale, as she didn't really want to spend the money on a hotel room. Besides, something about Poké Centers made her feel comfortable. They were like a universal constant, and if she really tried enough, she could almost make herself believe she was back in Kalos.
But she wasn't, and to be honest, it'd probably be best to get the idea of Kalos out of her head for the moment.
Diana was curled up at the end of the bed and around Bunny's feet. Dolly, her Dedenne, was in the middle of the Dratini's coils. The two were snoring quietly, Dolly in high-pitched squeaks, and the view made Bunny smile. Her newly-caught Stunky, Salem, was making whimpering noises in his sleep on the floor of the small compartment. Cheri, her Cherubi, was beside him snoozing silently. As Bunny quietly wriggled out from under the covers and put her bare feet on the cold tile floor, she crouched down and gave Salem a couple of light pets. Almost instantly he relaxed, and his whiskers twitched in content. Bunny smiled. He would fit into their family nicely.
It only took her a minute or two to get dressed in semi-decent clothing and to slip on some socks and shoes. Then, very quietly, Bunny left the compartment and was sure to lock the door with her key card so her pokémon wouldn't be disturbed.
She exited the pokémon center and took a deep, deep breath of fresh air. The moon was out, and it was nearly full, with the stars flickering all around it. Oldale was pretty nice, very quaint. Although vastly different from Lumiose, it somehow made her feel at home.
being out at one in the morning was nothing for rory. he's been out later. sometimes he doesn't even get home until the next day. it really depends on the girls and where they'd prefer to spend the night. the majority chose his place. because he was rich, no doubt. but he doesn't mind. it just made the game easier.
but this night he was just out for a nice walk. no funny business. no drinking, nothing. he was clean and pure tonight. he strolled through the streets of oldale. it was a small town. nothing like slateport or lilycove. he misses the smell of the ocean. the saltiness that the wind carried. he'll visit slateport soon. he could travel to lilycove anytime but it just wasn't the same as slateport, his home.
the pokemon center was bright as ever. one thing about oldale was that you could see the night sky very clearly. the bigger cities were too bright to see the stars. and tonight the sky was filled with them.
the doors slid open and out came a girl. rory was less than a block away. so he had more than enough time to look and observe. she looked young. probably too young. but you never know. and besides, he doesn't mind.
"the stars... they compliment your eyes," he said as he walked up to her. his hands inside the pockets of his pants.
--- ALIVE AGAIN, ANOTHER DAY, I'M NOT AFRAID TO GET OVER ---
[attr="class","boneshatter3"]The stars really were beautiful here. Lumiose was, by definition, the City of Light. And although that light was beautiful, it never diminished, even in the wee hours of the night. Everyone she had ever known that lived there had thick, heavy curtains to block it all out when they were trying to sleep. The only downgrade that beautiful, never-ending light was the lack of stars in the evening sky.
She began to fully witness constellations she remembered reading about. There was the Little Klefki, and Aries the Gogoat. She had seem them before on the outskirts of the city, but never like this. It was amazing.
Bunny had been so invested in the stars above that she didn't even notice the tall, lean man approaching. She jumped at the sound of his voice resonating off the silent buildings, startled. Once she processed his words, she began to blush furiously. She was grateful for the lack of light during the night until she realized the Poké Center was bright with florescents.
"O-oh, thank you," she stuttered, looking to the ground and shoving a strand of hair behind her ear. "I-I'm sorry, you, um, kind of startled me, I didn't mean to jump. Sorry." She continued to avoid eye contact, looking anywhere but at the boy, even after he presented himself. "I'm–uh–Bunny," she mumbled out, probably too quiet and too quickly for him to understand. She definitely wasn't expecting such a brash compliment, especially from such a handsome guy (at least, she thought he was handsome. She didn't really get all that good of a glance).
rory knew nothing about constellations. the school he went to did teach him about it. but he's forgotten most things about school. he was actually a good kid. got okay grades. never got into much trouble. but all of that turned upside down after the incident. he joined aqua and left school. there was no reason to continue. his parents were filthy rich.
the girl jumped when he spoke. shades of pink rushed her face. he could only smirk in response. was she inexperienced? or was she just really flirty. he was fine with either one.
"s-sorry, didn't mean to startle you," he chuckled. the girl couldn't even look at him. oh, he was enjoying this. "bunny?" he asked. he had to make sure he heard correctly. "that's a cute name," he smiled.
the light coming from the pokemon center was starting to get to him. he squinted his eyes, shifting his body so his back faced the building. this made it so he was facing the same way as bunny now, standing right next to her. his hands still inside his pockets for now.
"do you know anything about stars?" he asked. he took out one hand and pointed it up into the night sky. "teach me."
--- ALIVE AGAIN, ANOTHER DAY, I'M NOT AFRAID TO GET OVER ---
[attr="class","boneshatter3"]She remembered some constellations by what her Mom told her whenever they would travel around to the other nearby towns, but others she remembered from the Astrology course she took online barely half a year back. Her schooling was mostly online, which was why she not only graduated early but was also so awkward in many social situations until she warmed up to the other person. But she was determined to start her journey as soon as possible, so Bunny elected for online courses and skipping a grade rather than going to public school. It seemed like a better choice, and to be honest, she wouldn't have changed her mind even now. She loved this journey already, even if it was just the start of it.
"It's alright," Bunny said quickly, not wanting to make the boy feel uncomfortable or anything. "Really, I mean, who doesn't love company? Besides, um, people that... don't...." Way to go. She sighed quietly to herself.
Honestly, Bunny was pretty surprised that Liam had actually heard her. She nodded, "Yep, that's me. Bunny Beckett, Coordinator Extraordinaire... or, um, that's what'd I'd like to think."
She listened quietly to the silence between their words, feeling incredibly awkward and nervous. This feeling spiked when Liam asked her to teach him about constellations, along with something like her chest tightening that she didn't quite understand.
What kind of boy wanted to be taught by a girl her just met? Bunny didn't question it though, swallowed so her mouth wasn't dry, and said, "Well, that's Pisces. It's a Magikarp and a Feebas tied together by a singe string, swimming around and around endlessly. It's my star sign, um, and it represents peace." Bunny pointed the constellation out from the rest of the starry masses, rambling about it because it was the one she knew most about. She hoped that talking about something she liked would make her feel more comfortable and less like she was being crushed by a pokémon's Strength.
rory didn't respond to her first comment, hoping it would make things less awkward. but the silence was just as bad. but really, he felt fine. he rarely felt awkward at all. and especially not when he was talking to a girl. that was his comfort zone. after years of practice it just came naturally, he guessed. but he's trying his best to make it not so awkward for bunny. she was still new to this. to romance in general, he thought.
"coordinator? maybe i can come see one of your contest sometimes," he suggested. normally his tone would be strern and strong. but with her it was softer and more kind. he just adapted his tone to whoever he was speaking. "i'm liam ashcroft, and i don't really do anything," he laughed. just an alias again.
he followed her lead as she pointed up into the sky. he listened closely. he hasn't paid this much attention since school. it wasn't just because he was trying to bed the girl. no, he was also genuinely curious about the stars. he'd definitely use the stars to help with his game.
"pisces? that's my sign as well," he said. that was a lie. a filthy filthy lie. "i guess we're pretty peaceful people then," he commented. right. time to make his move. they couldn't stand outside here forever.
"are you alright?" he smiled. he was just trying to get her to a place where she could feel more comfortable. "there's a nice ice cream place around the corner. no idea if it's open but it's worth a shot," he added.
--- ALIVE AGAIN, ANOTHER DAY, I'M NOT AFRAID TO GET OVER ---
[attr="class","boneshatter3"]To try and calm herself, Bunny tried to remember how this boy came up to her on his own will. She should be comfortable, right? Right? But she didn't. What was going on?
And then Liam mentioned coming to her concerts, and Bunny was a blushing mess again. "That'd be pretty nice," she said almost immediately, though she didn't know why. "I'll be sure to tell you when my first contest is around, if I can." She wasnt expecting his comment on doing nothing, however, and it elicited a rogue giggle from her. And then she blushed more.
"Do you own any pokémon?" She took the time to look over his body in search of a couple of pokéballs, and also just to see him in general. He was moderately lean, taller than her, and once she got to his face she had to look away almost instantly due to the heat rushing the her cheeks. "U-um, I'd say if you have pokémon, you're kind of a trainer... in a sense." Bunny coughed to clear her throat and attempt to regain her composure.
Her best bet was to return to the stars, she decided. "That constellation is Capricorn, the Lapras, and that one is Cancer, the Kingle— Oh? Really?" Bunny looked at him now, momentarily forgetting her shyness as it was replaced with genuine surprise. "That's... pretty coincidental! Not gonna lie, I'm a real sucker for astrology signs and stuff." She shuffled a little to herself, looking back up to the sky.
And then he mentioned getting ice cream, at roughly 1:00 in the morning. This boy was full of surprises. But, for some reason, besides the tight feeling in her chest and the twistedness of her tongue, Bunny decided to agree with it. "Oh, sure. I guess I could go for some ice cream. If it's even open."
yeah, there was no way rory was going to a coordinator contest. that stuff just wasn't interesting to him. he had better things to do. if bunny did invite him he'll most likely just say he was there standing at the far back. that might work. or if she made an offer that he just can't refuse, then he'll go. but only if.
"me?" he asked. he owned a few pokemon. he used to own much more. he had a strong team before he started over again because of professor birch. but he was fine with his new one. "i have a few. so i guess i'm a trainer," he chuckled.
he loved watching bunny get all flustered up. she was finding it hard to speak right now. he knew he had this effect on women, just not to this degree. to be fair a lot of them were older than bunny. more experienced as well. which just makes this way more fun.
"i bet it's open," he said. he reached out to grab her hand to hold it in his. he was very sure she'd never agree to this on her own terms. but he was taking charge now. he didn't even say a word. he just looked at her, smiled, then started walking.
a few minutes of walking brought them around the corner. the ice cream shop was open, thankfully. he walked in and stared up at the menu.
--- ALIVE AGAIN, ANOTHER DAY, I'M NOT AFRAID TO GET OVER ---
[attr="class","boneshatter3"]When Liam grabbed her hand, her heart skipped a beat. She numbly followed him around the Poké Center and to wherever he was going. The stars were like her senses, dim to everything but Liam's hand in hers. She didn't even realize just how struck she was until the lights of the sweets shop beamed straight into her eyeballs.
The ice cream shop was, believe it or not, open 24/7. Why, Bunny didn't know. She guessed it gave it more time to get more customers or something? It didn't really matter.
When they walked inside it was brighter than the Pokémon Center with fluorescent lights. Bunny had to squint up at the menu just to see the words in tiny-print. There was scooped ice cream, frozen yogurt, smoothies, and more little dairy treats. There was so many to choose from!
Bunny blushed a little more when Liam asked her what she was having, but forced herself to calm down and her cheeks to resist flush. "Just a scoop of chocolate, I don't want too much. It'll spoil my breakfast... or give me nightmares, or something...." She couldn't quite remember what her parents always told her about hefty deserts late at night, but it was something that related.
rory had no idea why this place was still open. what market was there to sell ice cream to after midnight? he doesn't see why it needed to be open twenty-four-seven. but whatever. made for an easier night for hopeless romantics such as himself.
the place was empty. there was no one sitting at any booths. it was one in the morning after all. and not everyone was a stud like him. he looked up at the menu. there were a lot of choices to pick from. luckily bunny picked something simple.
rory walked up to the counter. "two scoops of chocolate," he ordered. the vendor was giving him weird looks. most likely because of who he was here with. rory just returned a glare of his own. then the vendor went off to do his thing and soon came back with two scoops of chocolate ice cream put into one bowl. he paid the vendor and walked over to a booth.
he sat down and placed the bowl in the middle. "hope you don't mind," he said, smiling as he took a spoon and held it. "and don't worry. i'll comfort you if you have nightmares," he winked.
"where are you from?" he asked. just making small talk now.
--- ALIVE AGAIN, ANOTHER DAY, I'M NOT AFRAID TO GET OVER ---
[attr="class","boneshatter3"]The thought of Liam ordering and paying for her didn't even cross Bunny's mind until it already happened, and then she felt herself lose her composure all over again. "Oh, you didn't have to do that, I've got plenty of money to pay for myself...." But he didn't seem to care, as he motioned her over to a booth. Bunny sat down on the plushy, plastic seat opposite to him, and Liam placed the bowl of scooped ice cream between them. She blushed again at what seemed like romantic implications, but pushed them to the back of her mind. It wasn't the time for daydreaming!
Timidly grasping her spoon, Bunny said, "It's fine, I don't." She took a tiny bite of the ice cream, already feeling like she had to make sure Liam got at least half of the bowl, maybe even more. He deserved his money's worth at the very least. She shifted uncomfortably in the wide chair, unsatisfied with how sticky it felt against her legs and how harsh it felt under her bum. It wasn't as soft as she had hoped.
Despite the cold ice cream in her mouth, Bunny felt her whole face light up with warmth as Liam offered to help soothe her through her nightmares. She didn't reply, only nodded and shoved another spoonful of the chocolate ice cream in an attempt to cool her features. It didn't work.
Thankfully Liam changed the subject. "Oh, I'm from Lumiose City in Kalos. Y'know, big light tower and stuff," she mumbled the last part in case he was unfamiliar, but she was sure he wasn't. Everyone knew about Lumiose, and it was more likely that she didn't want to sound too proud or obnoxious in front of the young man. "Um, what about you? Are you a native to Hoenn, or...?"
rory didn't mind paying for the ice cream. heck, he'll buy her more things if she wanted. he just has so much money that it's stupid. he doesn't even know what to do with it anymore. he doesn't even use that much. he's not one to spend a lot.
he also doesn't like chocolate that much. not his favorite flavor. vanilla was. that shit was good. chocolate was just alright. he took a scoop and ate it. it seemed like every comment he made would just end up with bunny blushing like mad. it was cute as heck. he could only return a smile every time.
"ah, yeah, big city," he replied. he's never been outside of hoenn. even though he had all the money in the world he just doesn't want to go out of hoenn. there was nothing out there for him. and besides, everything he loves was in hoenn. aqua, slateport, cassandra.
"native. slateport," he replied. there was not much to say about it. "it's crowded," he laughed. he looked over at her and pointed to the side of his mouth. "you got a little something," he said. ah, screw it. he picked up a tissue and went forward to try to wipe a bit of ice cream off the side of her mouth.
--- ALIVE AGAIN, ANOTHER DAY, I'M NOT AFRAID TO GET OVER ---
[attr="class","boneshatter3"]At least despite all the awkwardness of the conversation, the ice cream was good. Bunny recalled a sign on one of the front windows of the ice cream parlor reading "ALL NATURAL!" with a happy-looking Miltank on it. Maybe that was why it had such a rich flavor, or it could just be her affinity for chocolate sweets. Either way, she enjoyed it, and it gave herself something to focus on besides Liam's handsome features. Including his smile.
Seriously, she didn't know if he smiled this much on a regular basis or if it was something relating to her. She hoped not, because the only options for that meant he was either interested in her for romantic reasons or he found her embarrassment and awkwardness funny. Either way, she didn't really want to be the center of a cute boy's attention — or she didn't think she did. Did she?
But the mention of Lumiose got her thinking about home again, and then the homesickness swelled up like a bubble inside her stomach. Bunny looked back down at the ice cream, chopping up little pieces of the scoops before getting a bite and shoving it into her mouth. Best not to dwell. Change the subject.
"So you're from Slateport? That's not far from Petalburg, right? Or something? I can't remember." She spoke with a little more ease now, focusing more on her ice cream and less on her words. The more she worried about what she was saying, the more fumbled it all came out. Swallowing another spoonful of ice cream, she added, "What're you doing out this late, anywa— oh—!" She looked up just in time to see Liam moving in with a napkin, mumbling about something on her face.
Yep, it was gone. All composure gone. Did she even have any in the first place? Bunny didn't know. Now all she was really certain of was that, for some reason, she found this random guy really, really cute and he was inching closer and closer to her face. She probably looked stupid with chocolate smeared all over her chin. God dammit.
it was like he broke her. he wiped the chocolate off her chin and retracted his arm back. he placed the tissue on the table and picked up his spoon again. he reached for a scoop of ice cream and ate it once more. he just seemingly ignored how flustered she was. all he could do was smile.
right. he himself wasn't too sure why he was out here tonight. just a nice walk, he supposed. he doesn't do that often. no time for nice calm walks when you're the leader of team aqua. he could just see the faces of people when they hear about what he was doing. the leader of aqua going on an ice cream date with a kid. but he can't be too sure. she might be thirty for all he knew.
"just went out for a nice walk," he replied. he wasn't too sure what she was doing outside though. it was too late for someone like her to be outside alone. she could run into creeps for all she knew. "what about you? why are you up so late?" he asked.
oh, right. her earlier question. "one boat trip can get you to slateport. you should come sometime," he added.
--- ALIVE AGAIN, ANOTHER DAY, I'M NOT AFRAID TO GET OVER ---
[attr="class","boneshatter3"]Bunny didn't really know how to react. Her brain was going haywire, thinking different thoughts at a speed she couldn't keep track of. Most of her was embarrassed and even slightly disgusted with what she thought Liam was going to do when he leaned in, and then a smaller part of her was disappointed that he was actually wiping something off of her chin. And that only made her more upset. She didn't like this sudden tidal wave of feelings, and she didn't know how to process them either.
But this time, she quickly gathered herself. Bunny supposed it was getting easier as time went on, and also as she felt the barrage of emotions exhaust her. She was ready to sleep now, and not think of this encounter for a good couple of years. It was too embarrassing.
"A nice walk, huh?" she asked with a quiet yawn that she politely covered with her hand. "You sure take walks at weird times of day, Liam." Then again why people did what they did when they did it was none of her business, that was a personal preference. But right now she didn't really have the brain power to think out what she was saying completely. "I couldn't sleep. I was feeling homesick, so I stepped outside to get some air. And ice cream, apparently." She yawned again. When did she get so tired? Maybe it was the ice cream that helped.
"Oh, really? I didn't know you had to get there by boat," she eventually replied, finishing her half of the ice cream. "Well, after the festival in Petalburg, I'll probably be stopping by there. Maybe I'll see you there and you can show me around." It was odd, because part of her didn't want to see this boy again and forget about him, so she wouldn't feel so conflicted and embarrassed. But the rest of her felt excitement at the thought of spending more time with him, after she had had some time to collect herself away from Liam's presence.
