Behind him sat the rosy Route 101, a happy and easy way for one to start their Pokemon journey. For Avery there was no exception, as he and his newly named Staryu, Ruby, had no trouble clearing it together. As his eyes scanned Oldale Town, Avery was already considering heading back into the route to try and find some Pokemon. Having one more, plus his Carvanha egg, would make for three Pokemon. And while he hadn't really seen a river or stream to attract water Pokemon, Avery made the decision that he hadn't taken much time to look around, either. He made his way to the Pokemon Center.
As the sliding glass doors parted for his entry, a thud right on the top of his head caused for Avery's neck to crane, searching for clouds. What had been a clear sky only a short hour ago was now crowded with puffy, bluish clouds that could only mean a storm was coming. Ruby, who had been hopping along side of him since meeting Bunny, didn't seem phased as a few more raindrops came crashing down on her top point. Of course, Avery didn't really care about the rain either - he'd lived by the ocean his whole life. Storms there were like if storms on the mainland all agreed to start using anabolic steroids while chilling over top of the biggest lake in Hoenn. Avery suddenly wondered where that lake was, or if it even existed at all. When a few more big raindrops thudded him on the top of his head, the coordinator finally ceased in his awkward blocking of the entrance like an inconveniently-placed Snorlax and headed inside.
As he plopped down on a couch not far from the entrance, Avery laughed as he looked around at the replica of the Humilau Pokemon Center, barring the missing Pokemart. Apparently, all of these places were almost exactly alike. It didn't surprise him really, since one set up was efficient for moving people around. Yet it still disappointed him at least a little bit -- he was hoping for some individuality! Oldale looked like it was just a quaint little town with very little going on.
He looked out the window and carefully set his egg between himself and Ruby. "Well, it's really coming down now Ruby! Looks like we'll just have to chill in here for a bit." The Staryu responded with silence, apparently relaxing. It was becoming a challenge for Avery to discern what was going on with her. (He'd also decided to just refer to it as a girl for simplicity's sake.)
Thunder boomed and the building shook, filled with new trainers hiding from the storm. Much to his own surprise, not many had coming piling in once the rain started coming. He got up and grabbed a bottle of water from the counter where Nurse Joy and graciously set a few out for taking.

Kohaku couldn’t fucking believe his luck.
The young man silently fumed as he ran out of route 102 and into Oldale with a low growl in his throat. He’d been out trying to catch a few pokemon when suddenly the sky had darkened and the heavens had opened up. Scheherazade had let out a surprised squeal and Ko had acted quickly, knowing that it’d be dangerous for the fire type if her flames went out. She’d gotten a bit soaked but he’d called her back into her pokeball before any serious damage had been done and that was the biggest relief to him…until he realized he was getting soaked to the bone. He’d tried looking for Dexter but the rain turned to thunder and lightning as well and he was forced to give up. His white mandarin collared shirt soaked entirely through and the white harem pants with blank leather strips on either side of his hips no longer having their flare. Even his black slippers were soggy in in need of repair as he ran through the muddied ground.
This was seriously not even cool and he let out a hiss of displeasure. His fuchsia hair sticking to his face and sides, sometimes his bangs struck him and he was forced to slow down or run in to something as his vision was obscured. It didn’t take long before he saw that godforsaken Pokecenter and he let out a little cry of relief. Jumping slightly when the thunder sounded violently and almost seeming close as he scurried towards the safe haven. It didn’t take long before he stumbled into the center, body weary and soaked to the point that he’d begun to shiver a bit as he let himself fall to his knees in exhaustion.
The nurse’s let out worried murmurs as they rushed over to him, asking him various questions and trying to make sure he was alright. However, he pushed away their hands with a low growl and shoved a pokeball into one of their hands. “My pokemon…She’s a fire-type and she got caught out there for a while. She needs help.” Scheherazade would always be his first priority because she trusted him to take care of her and he wouldn’t betray that trust. The nurse’s quieted for a moment before two hurried away with the pokeball and he relaxed a bit, one of the nurses coming back over with a towel and he blinked at it before murmuring a thanks. He brushed cherry-pink locks from his face and slowly stood, vaguely realizing he was a little warmer thanks to finally being inside and out of the cold rain.
Sometimes he just didn’t understand the weather in Hoenn it was so damn weird. He moved unthinkingly, weaving his way past bodies and ignoring stares aimed at him. His mind more preoccupied with his healing Ponyta then the curiosity of strangers that no doubt were trying to figure out this Androgynous person as he attempted to dry his hair.
Unthinkingly, he sat in the first open seat he found and sat quietly as he stared at a window. He continued absently drying his hair before something caught his attention and he turned. Well…apparently he’d taken a seat next to someone and hadn’t even realized it…a small blush dusted across his cheeks in embarrassment before he grinned sheepishly. “Oh…um…I’m sorry. This seat…wasn’t taken was it??”

A relaxed Avery sipped at his water. Watching rain was always relaxing from the dry side of a window. To Avery, it was a reminder that people needed to slow down, and the rain was Arceus' message to us humans that life had to stop every once in a while for a little appreciation. It was beautiful in that respect. It made him wonder what busy days were being ruined by a storm in the Hoenn region, even across the world. His eyes followed raindrops down the glass just feet from him, his mind racing them against one another as gravity and momentum dragged them along.
Behind the window, Avery made out another person running into the Pokemon Center frantically, most likely avoiding the rain. A chuckle rose out of the back of his throat at their misfortune.
The guy (he'd decided he was male as he closed in) burst through the doors, free from the onslaught that had been torturing him. Avery watched him carefully and quietly, subconsciously bringing his egg onto his lap and clutching it close. Without much warning, the guy fell to the floor from exhaustion. Avery frowned at this, wondering how far the man had to have run to get here. The heaviness in his breath as he spoke indicated that he wasn't close. No, he had been on route 101, and his fire type had been caught out in the rain. Avery's frown deepened, worry building up in his chest for the mysterious fire type. Something told him the Pokemon would be fine, but there was no evidence, and thus the worry remained.
He sat pondering the boy's situation when, out of nowhere, he plopped down next to Avery with a towel in hand, between him and Ruby. The Staryu was unalarmed, even curious about him, directing her body toward him. Avery offered a smile to the guy. "Nope, just taken by you!" his voice was cheery with the hopes of keeping the mood light for his counterpart, not wanting to make his Pokemon's situation seem worse than it might have been.
He was never really a huge wreck himself, but he didn't like being surrounded by fear when things seemed to be out of his control. Without much more warning for the guy, Avery got up and approached Nurse Joy, a small smile on his face. "Would you mind grabbing a blanket for my friend over there, just in case he needs it?" Joy nodded and reached below the counter separating them, coming up with a gray, woolen blanket that could cover a whole family if it needed to. Despite it being summer, Avery knew it was cooler than your average summer day.
He thanked her with a smile and returned to his couch where the guy sat. "In case you need it! I'm sure your Pokemon will be okay. Just take a breath and keep your cool!" he hoped his toothy smile would reassure the guy.

Scheherazade was his only pokemon for the moment, the one he worried about most and his pride. He didn’t know what he would do if something happened to her, he jolly little filly had wiggled her way into her heart and she was there to stay. It was why he’d gotten a little frantic even though he knew she wasn’t in too bad of shape and that he’d gotten to call her back into her pokeball in time. It still hadn’t stopped the sliver of concern that ailed him while he walked aimlessly to find somewhere he’d be able to sit in peace but not actually paying all that much attention to where he was going. Which was why he was surprised when he finally noticed he was sitting next to someone without him having asking if the seat was taken. However, the young man didn’t seem at all bothered and in fact seemed rather…chipper?
The fire-type trainer blinked at him for a moment, a little taken off guard by his cheery tones but allowing a small smile to curl his lips in turn as he looked at the blonde next to him. “Oh well…that’s good then.” He hesitated a moment not sure what to say and feeling a little off balance but before he could really get anymore words out the young man stood up and was walking away. Ko watched in mild shock unsure what to think until he overheard what the guy was asking for and then a small pocket of warmth rested in his chest as a small but genuine smile curled his lips. Watching as the young man came towards him with the huge blanket the fuchsia haired young man opened his mouth to thank the blonde only to have his reassurance on his pokemon make him pause.
Who was this guy to be so…kind?
Kohaku bit his lip and took the blanket from the other male, watching him from beneath his lashes for a moment. After a moment of silence and wrapping the blanket around himself to cover his body, Kohaku kicked off his slippers and folded them under his chin. Angling himself so that he’d be facing the other male before deciding it was time to actually start thanking this young man for what he’d done. “Thank you…for this and…reassuring me.” Kohaku paused for a moment, pink lightly dusting his cheeks for a brief second before he vaguely gestured to the state he was in. “I’m not usually like this but well…I suppose it was due.” He let a little helpless smile curl his lips, tucking a still somewhat damp lock behind his ear, vaguely realizing he still didn’t know what happened to Dex.
His attention was stolen back by the blonde in front of him and he offered a delicate hand to shake as he grinned sheepishly, “I’m sorry, I haven’t even introduced myself. I’m Kohaku, Kohaku Lee-Yan. I’m a trainer.” His eyes went to the Staryu and a soft smile curled his lips as he glanced at the blonde, “Your pokemon??” He was always eager to learn and see knew pokemon, his experience with them rather limited since he’d spent most of his life helping his mother and fending off bullies.
Avery beamed. He was always beaming. If there was one thing he knew, there was always something to beam about, as naive as he may have been. "Oh, no problem! Doctors say that a positive attitude and atmosphere can help even the patients who are worse off than all the others." perhaps he'd heard that on tv somewhere, but he didn't know it's validity. He followed himself up quickly. "Not saying that your Pokemon is the worst off, because I'm sure that isn't true. And I'm not saying you're a wreck, either...I mean yeah, you did come in soaking wet, so you're kind of a mess, but not a figurative mess..." he ran a hand over the top of his hair, as if he might comb out a shovel that could write him a logical sentence or two and dig him out of this hole.
A chuckle escaped his lips as he pursed them to try and keep himself from talking, and he felt his cheeks redden at the embarrassment of his stupidity. "Sorry." that was the only word he needed here.
"I'll forgive you for your state if you forgive me for mine. I'm usually way cooler, I swear." he grinned at this, believing it to be true. Avery searched the guys face, duly noting the blushing that could not possibly be missed. He smiled at this and offered a hand. "Nice to meet you, Kohaku Lee-Yan." as he spoke, Ruby leaped off the couch and sidestepped past Kohaku to rejoin her master. "I'm Avery Ashemore, though Avery works just fine. This is Ruby, my Staryu!"
"It somehow never fails that I forget to introduce myself, so don't feel bad. At least you have an excuse to be a little scatterbrained. Me, I'm just sitting here watching the rain." he referred to the guys Pokemon again. "I'm sorry, what kind of Pokemon do you have? I assume it's a fire-type of sorts?"

Kohaku had to bite his lip to stop himself from laughing or grinning at the blonde in front of him as he spoke. It was adorable how he was obviously trying to comfort him and the rattling off little things like that was actually a little charming. He blinked a little when the blonde ran a hand through his hair and for the first time actually looked at the blonde haired male. Huddling a little more into his blanket so that his face was covered when he realized that…He was handsome. Not in the same way Alexander or Cain was but it was different, sweeter and less chaotic but no less handsome and it drew him to the blonde. At the young man’s apology the fuchsia haired young man sat up once more, allowing the blanket to fall as he smiled at him. “No please, don’t apologize. It was cute and it did make me feel better.” None of which was a lie considering he had thought it was cute and his rambling had made him forget for a moment that he’d panicked just a bit about his ponyta.
The petite male blinked at the young man in front of him, unable to keep another smile of his own off his face in answer to his. A little laugh tumbling from his lips at the blonde’s words but he bit his lip for a moment before nodding his head in agreement as he chuckled. “Alright deal. We’ll blame it on the rain and pretend neither of us is such a mess." At the offered hand at the introduction Kohaku considered it for a moment before slipping a delicate hand into his and offering it a firm shake, a warm smile dancing along his lips. His attention was caught as the Staryu rejoined its master before the blonde, now known as Avery, introduced them both. Slipping his hand away with a little hum of acknowledgement he murmured warmly, “It’s a pleasure to meet you both then, Avery…Ruby.” The young man seemed to be so full of life and perpetually smiling, it was…nice. It probably helped Avery was cute and Kohaku’s eyes kept straying, examining him in curiosity as well as interest.
At his words about him having an excuse KO let out another soft laugh, covering it with the blanket as he ducked his head a little. He hummed thoughtfully once he had himself under control and shook his head, brushing back a lock of hair behind his ear as he chirped, “Nah I’m pretty bad with introducing myself so I guess we’re both rather scatterbrained.” His eyes trailed back to the window, watching to see that while the thunder had let up it still rained. “Usually I like this weather but…I guess I can’t enjoy it as much as usual.” His attention was stolen back from the window when Avery spoke up again and he blinked before it clicked and he grinned sheepishly. “Oh, Scheherazade is a Ponyta so yeah, definitely a fire-type.” The mention of his sweet filly made him glance over to where they’d taken his ponyta before deciding to trust that the Nurse’s new what they were doing and looking back to Avery. “So are you a trainer as well or you setting out for a different occupation?”
