Down the lonely path he went in silence. His large afro bobbing from side to side as the wind blew, he took a deep drag on the cigarette that he had carefully planted between the fingers of his right hand. Exhaling a puff of smoke, he looked down at the Honedge that had made his left hip, its home. Must really want to pass as an actual sword... he thought as he used the knuckles of his left hand to tap the sleeping Pokemon gently. The Honedge shook - perhaps a signal to tell its trainer that it was okay? That was how Joseph interpreted it at least. With a stern facial expression, he continued down the quiet path.
It wasn't long before another trainer appeared on the path along side Joseph. A young man that looked to be in his teens. Joseph's eyes quickly scanned the strangers face in an attempt to determine whether he was friend or foe. It didn't matter what he was, really. Friend or foe, Joseph was content with minding his own business...at least unless a moment came when he was forced to do otherwise.
Both he and the trainer's eyes met. It seems the young man was busy doing the same thing that he was. Needless to say, Joseph wasn't the type to make small talk. But, another trainer meant another opportunity to gain vital battle experience. He didn't smile or change his stone-like facial expression. He simply tapped on the Pokemon that was half asleep on his hip with his fingers. With a glare, he turned to look directly at the stranger. "Battle me" he said with a calm but stern tone. No sooner said, his Honedge lunged from his hip and landed on the ground before him. "Battle, yes?"
The stranger seemed just as willing to battle as he was. This made Joseph a little happy. If he didn't have a permanently stern facial expression, he would probably be laughing and beaming with excitement. Alas, this was Joseph. He never smiled. In fact, he tried his best to never let any of his emotions show.
Aerodactyls are tough... he thought, as he looked the opposing Pokemon up and down. But, it's a flying/rock type. None of those types have an immediate advantage over a steel type like Honedge.
He cleared his throat and then yelled: "Honedge, use SWORDS DANCE". He looked over at the opposing trainer and then shifted his attention back to the opposing Pokemon. Honedge's only attack is not very effective against rock types. I should let it power up some more. He dug his heals into the ground and then yelled once more: "Use another SWORDS DANCE, Honedge". The tiny sword Pokemon spun itself around and around. Each time, its attack strength increased.
Suspicious. The trainer only called for one attack. Was he underestimating Joseph and his Pokemon? Maybe. But, that didn't bother Joseph one bit. All that mattered now was that Joseph accounted for the impending fire fang. Fire fang...of all the moves. Joseph watched as the opposing Aerodactyl quickly made its way towards his Hownedge. Should he dodge? Joseph didn't quite know what to do just yet. After all, this trainer seemed a bit different from the rest. Perhaps a little too calm. Maybe a little too confident. Joseph didn't like it. He knew he had to be cautious.
"Meet that fire fang with a TACKLE" Joseph yelled. Though he knew that Aerodactyl's attack had the type advantage, he hoped that the boosted power of his Honedge's tackle would be enough to counter the effects. The two Pokemon collided, but only Honedge was sent crashing down to the ground. Perhaps this was the benefit of being able to fly?
Joseph didn't quite account for this biological advantage. But, the fact that Honedge got up almost unscathed made him somewhat relieved that he had made the call he did.
I must boost tackles power even more... No sooner thought than done. He called out to Honedge: "Use another SWORDS DANCE, Honedge". In an instant, the tiny sword Pokemon began to spin itself around.
Now that his Honedge had successfully managed to power up so many times, Joseph was confident that the tiny sword Pokemon stood a chance against the opponent's fire fang using Aerodactyl. His cold exterior showed no sign of this confidence, however, as his fierce glare remained fixed on the opposing Pokemon.
His muscles tightened. There was little time to react. The opposing Pokemon was already on the move and in the midst of launching another fire fang. At this point, fire fang was the least of his worries. If the Aerodactyl stayed in the air, there was no way Honedge's tackle would reach it, boosted or not. He had to wait...wait until the Aerodactyl got closer. And wait he did until the opposing Pokemon was close enough. "Dodge" he yelled. "Now follow up with a TACKLE...and another" he continued.
With a quick movement of its body, the Honedge had managed to avoid the incoming assault from the opposing Pokemon, and lunged forward to carry out an assault of its own.
Joseph might have taken on more than he could chew. He realized that when the flying type came out of the last exchange with Honedge almost unscathed. Not good... Joseph thought. He contemplated ending the battle, but he didn't want to discourage the tenacious Honedge, especially after all the hard work the Pokemon had put into the match thus far.
But, he had no other choice. With no attacks that could deal super effective damage, or any attacks that could at least to neutral damage, Joseph had to throw in the towel. A part of him wanted to see how much further Honedge could go. Perhaps that would have been wise for future battles. But, unnecessarily involving his Pokemon in a battle that they couldn't win was not his style. He had learned that truth the hard way in another match he had recently. And, there really was nothing wrong with gracefully bowing out of a battle. At least, that was how Joseph felt. A trainer that knew when to quit would seem more wise to him.
He raised his right hand in the air to signal that he wanted the match to end. "That's enough...return Honedge".
The tiny Pokemon showed no sign of disappointment. Then again, it was probably hard for the stiff bodied Pokemon to show any emotion. Meanwhile, the opposing Aerodactyl circled above with its fangs ablaze. "Please call your Pokemon back" Joseph yelled to the other trainer. "I do not wish to continue this battle". That was the last thing Joseph said before taking a bow - a sign of respect to the trainer.
Honedge slowly made its way towards its trainer...
Just like that, the battle was over. Joseph stood silent for a moment - watching his Honedge make its way towards him. "Thank you Honedge" he muttered when the Pokemon got closer. "You were great".
A gentle breeze blew, causing his hair to dance about. The shadows from the trees above formed patterns on his face. The glimpses of light that escaped through the shade formed equally majestic patterns on his lean body.
Honedge looked up at him. The light from above and his dancing hair mesmerized the Pokemon. To Honedge, Joseph could do no worng, and everything from his long afro to his dark skin made him beautiful to the Pokemon. Honedge danced about in an attempt to match the movement of Joseph's hair. It seemed happy. This made Joseph happy. It seemed that the Pokemon was not discouraged by the battle after all.
By now, the other trainer had made his way over to Joseph. He introduced himself and Joseph replied with a nod."Joseph is my name..." he said reluctantly. "Thank you for the battle". With that, he picked up his Honedge and secured it to his belt.
Joseph stared at the young trainer intensely. In response to his question, Joseph nodded to signal a yes. In truth, he hadn't used Honedge for work. What he did use, however, was a katana. It was this same katana that he used to battle and subsequently capture Honedge. It is perhaps for this reason that Honedge idolized Joseph. Perhaps it wanted to be wielded with similar mastery as the katana Joseph used.
All that aside, however, a simple nod, Joseph felt, was sufficient to answering the young trainers question. He ran his finger along Honedge's hilt while he continued to stare at the other trainer. Was there anything else he needed? Joseph thought. The trainer was clearly making conversation, but Joseph was a man of very few words. With nothing to say, he took a few steps back and then bowed. This was his typical show of respect for all he battled. Without waiting for a response from the other trainer, he turned and began to walk away.
