Under normal circumstances, Cael would have let his starter pokemon follow beside him so the two could bond. But he still refused to accept the castform Professor Birch had assigned him - him, of all people. Why had Cael been cursed with a castform of all things?
His only saving grace was the egg he held within his arms. However, Cael had a grave feeling about said egg... one of suspicion as he looked over its familiar pattern. Something looked fishy about it... Whatever was inside, it had to be a hundred times better than the pint-size pokemon currently resting inside its pokeball.
The redhead couldn't have said goodbye to Littleroot any faster. He had the worse kind of luck today it seemed, having run into a pair of irritating girls while at the lab. Cael could only hope they wouldn't be right behind his tail, and that persuaded him to elongate his strides and move a little faster. All the while his hands carefully cradeled the pokemon egg, keeping it warm and safe from harm.
Though as Cael walked on, something would vibrate around his waist. He peered down just in time to see that one of his pokeballs had popped itself open and out from it came his castform, wide-eyed with excitement. "Cast!" the puny pokemon announced.
"What?" Cael sneered down at it. "Get back in your pokeball," he demanded. "I have no time for games."
Castform pouted. "Cast!" she trilled again. "Cast! Cast!" She bounced around from side to side, demonstrating what appeared to be a bit of a tantrum.
He glared. "What's your problem? You sound like that annoying lady on the weather channel. What's her name. Louise? Louanne? Lana?" With a frown, Castform begun to run ahead of Cael, crying out its name in rage and disappointment. "Hey!" he yelled after her. "Lana, come back here!" He grit his teeth, hissing under his breath as he chased after the thing.

In contrast, Marcus was quite content with Charles. The Aipom held a lively spirit, one that matched the vivacity of his crescent eyes, crescent smiles. Then again, he wasn't the one with a Castform; he probably would have liked it anyway.
Marcus' first few steps into route 101 were robbed of their serenity. The wailing sounds of a distraught Pokemon continued to thieve him of his smile. Soon after, the wobbling form of a Castform came into view, and he quickly ran up to meet it.
"What's wrong?" Marcus asked, and if able, he picked up the shivering weather Pokemon and cradled it in his arms.
Soon, he heard its name being called, and with an incredulous look to his eyes, Marcus waited with the Castform. As Cael came into view, his smile returned to his face, although it was practiced, stenciled in by the paint of feigned courtesy.

What a way to start off his adventure. Thankfully no one was around to see his embarrassing attempt at being a trainer... ah fuck. Cael came to a stop when he saw Marcus up ahead, holding his castform. Dammit.
Lana had taken an immediate liking to the brunette, snuggling close against him and hiding her face into his chest. That irked Cael even more. Great, so not only did he get the worse possible choice for a pokemon, but it didn't even like him! He held his egg closer.
"I didn't mess up," Cael corrected Marcus right away. "The professor's the one here that messed me up by giving me this crybaby."
Okay, so Cael needed work on his social relationships skills. But what was wrong with a bit of tough love?
"Just put her down so I can recall her back to her pokeball," Cael went on and took a step forward.
In response, Lana shook her head, unwilling to return. "Castform!" she yelled, and although Cael was no pokelingual expert, he could have sworn she had just given him a big, fat "no".
"What'd you say, punk?" he snapped at her with a pointed finger.
[ OOC ]Marcus Ridler tbh i think lana has a crush on marcus (;
Marcus pet the Castform on its bulbous head-body-thing as it dug itself against the warm fabric of his clothes. He cooed at it softly, whispering small gibberish before returning his indiscernible gaze to Cael.
A curious croon rolled from the thick collar of fabric around his neck and his Aipom came into view beside his head. Tilting his head once, then twice, Charles eventually settled on blowing a raspberry at the redhead before hiding underneath Marcus' clothes.
"The Professor's a character. I'll give you that," Marcus said.
Marcus didn't budge, but the quaking of Castform's shape made him reluctant, if not entirely ready to make with it like Team Rocket.
"No pointing," Marcus wagged his finger, "it's rude."
Marcus hummed and swiveled on the ball of his right foot. Whistling, he thought a moment before returning back to face Cael.
"How can I be sure you're not some abusive jackass instead of a novice-neanderthal?" Tapping his finger against his lips, he hummed, "maybe I'll give her back if you tell the Castform how much you love her. Sincerely. With heart. Yea... oh, and go down on one knee. That'd be great."
THE FIRST THING I LEARNED IS TO NOT CRY WITHOUT YOU. SECOND, TO NOT WALK ALONE. THIRD, EVEN IF IT HURTS, TO NOT CALL YOUR NAME AND LOOK FOR YOUR WARM HANDS.
Sudden movment caught Cael's eyes, an aipom to be specific. The monkey was quick to hide after taunting Cael though. Of course, it had worked. His eyes narrowed and his brow was knitted tightly together. "Holding other people's pokemon without their permission is rude," he retorted with a snort, and when he saw Marcus turn in the other direction, Cael became afraid the boy would actually take off. Relief swept his face when he made no signs of running away. There was no way this guy would want his useless castform anyways. He was just being nice for the moment.
At Marcus' request, Cael would growl out furiously, "What?! What sort of demand is that!" Even if Cael was in fact happy with the choice of his starter, there was no way he'd be able to develop a strong enough bond with it within the first twenty minutes, not enough to admit that he loved the thing. It was an unreasonable deal! "You're bonkers if you think I'm going to do something as ridiculous as that," Cael spat.
He wasn't budging, and neither was Lana. She looked back, almost hopeful that her trainer would actually commit to such a feat. Alas, her hope had been for naught, and she'd do the same as this boy's aipom by sticking her tongue out. That would not go unnoticed by Cael. "Why, you little—!" he sneered toward her.
Cael moved inward with his lengthy legs. "Hand her over to me, now."
Lana wailed in Marcus' arms, shaking her head (or rather her whole body) with more vigor.
"I don't need your permission," Marcus said, "but I'm pretty sure your little friend gave me her's by hopping into my arms."
Marcus snickered at Cael's reaction. Although the man stood at an impressive 6'1", the shorter man shed no signs of being intimidated. His smile mounted itself proudly on his face, and stood tall against the growl of Cael's bewilderment.
"Ridiculous?" He laughed, "you're already looking pretty ridiculous with your Pokemon disobeying you and what not."
Marcus laughed again once the Castform mimicked his Aipom's mischievous conduct. Although he surmised that the trainer in front of him wasn't the kindest of men—actually, he was pretty sure of the fact—Marcus couldn't help but pity the guy. His type, Marcus believed, was the cocky, I'm-too-cool-for-you-kind, however, that did not dissuade him from possessing a shimmer of sympathy for the redhead.
Donating one look at the man's long legs before facing him again, he sighed. Marcus pulled Lana towards him and in gentler tones he spoke, "Lana, I'm going to give you back, but!" His eyes matched Cael's, "don't worry because I'm not leaving. I'll follow you around with this jerk, how's that sound?"
Marcus nodded several times at Cael, as if expecting a grand "yes" to follow from his scowl.
THE FIRST THING I LEARNED IS TO NOT CRY WITHOUT YOU. SECOND, TO NOT WALK ALONE. THIRD, EVEN IF IT HURTS, TO NOT CALL YOUR NAME AND LOOK FOR YOUR WARM HANDS.
By now, it should have been apparent to Cael that he was being a dick, but admitting to it was like tossing him into a frozen lake. He was already embarrassed as is, and yet Cael didn't want to give in. Unfortunately Marcus was the gentleman here and Cael the bad guy.
He swore under his breath. "If you like her so much, you might as well fucking keep her." Cael never wanted her in the firs place. She was better off with a great and noble trainer like Marcus anyways. Humph. Fine. Fuck them.
But it turned out that wouldn't be the case. Marcus would in fact return Lana to Cael's custody, but with a condition, and the hotheaded trainer wasn't happy to hear it. This boy and his god damn conditions.
When Lana first heard Marcus would be handing her back, she could have cried just then. But she immediately smiled when he offered to stay with her. That would be more than enough for the castform.
"Tch." Cael didn't want to have to follow this guy's orders. He didn't like that his starter had bonded with someone else instead of him. "Thief," Cael sneered as he walked past Marcus. "Fine, let's fucking go already. I don't have all day to stand around and argue with you here."
Secretly he was glad Lana wouldn't be leaving his side just yet. Just the tiniest.
spearow cawed to his companion good-naturally, coaxing her from the nest she currently resided in. she was a pretty bird, small with a lovely set of feathers. he desired her to become his mate! after all, she deserved someone such as himself. once she had followed him, he happened upon a pair of humans. seeking to impress, the bird released a sharp cry of warning and proceeded to peck at one of the human's exposed heads.
a wild spearow appeared ! the wild spearow used peck!
pidgey followed the spearow in a reluctant fashion, wary of the world and all its dangers. but he appeared so confident, and so she hurried after him. they took flight, and, to her immense displeasure, he halted before a few humans. hovering with an anxious look on her beak she chirped unhappily, attempting to discourage the bold spearow.
Lana could have stayed in Marcus' warm and comforting arms. And for a brief moment, she thought of Cael's words. "If you like her so much, you might as well fucking keep her." It hurt to know her trainer didn't want her. But the castform was conflicted.
She could stay with Marcus. He seemed friendly, nice, caring. What better trainer than a trainer like him? But as she stared at the redhead's back, Lana felt saddened. Even if their time together had been short, an attachment had already been made the moment she had left the pokeball and blinked up at Cael. She was upset with him and herself. Why couldn't she be the strong pokemon her trainer so desired? Rather than leave him, what Lana wanted most was to prove that she could be the pokemon of his dreams.
Cael stopped when he saw two bird pokemon approaching, one of them calling out toward them. He thought nothing much of it, but once he felt the spearow pecking the top of his head, Cael flipped. "Hey!" he barked, hands flailing to scare the critter off of him. "Get off!"
When Lana saw the bird attack her trainer, she immediately puffed out her cheeks and cried out in defense. Her small form floated away from Marcus' arms, and although she was a weak castform, Lana would give her all. She tossed her whole weight toward the spearow to tackle him off of Cael's head. How dare he hurt Cael!
"You should be calling your Castform the thief, seeing that she's already stolen your dignity as a trainer," Marcus laughed, and laughed, and laughed. His lithe body trembled, each little tremor a blur of mockery.
Cael would have to become used to this: Marcus had a penchant for schadenfreude. Thankfully, Marcus' voice avoided the pitfalls of being a nasally nuisance. Instead, his spirited chuckles seemed to house the inherent quality of lampoon.
Then the birds came.
"What the—" Marcus recoiled at the abrupt entry of two birds. As the Spearow continued its onslaught on Cael's fiery head, he laughed again, "you can't be serious, pfahaha!"
However, when Lana drifted away from his arms and conducted her gallant defense, he couldn't help but admire her. Truly, the bond between a Pokemon and trainer was something to behold, and to cherish.
Refusing to be one-upped, his Aipom scaled his neck and mounted his head. Using Marcus' hairy peak as a launching point, the monkey pushed himself from his trainer's head and engaged the Pidgey, using SCRATCH when he reached the bird.

spearow squawked out as the lump of gray struck him bodily. releasing a noise of aggravation as he was temporarily grounded, he raised his eyes to peer at the red-haired human. he didn't like the opposing male's eyes. they looked too much like his own. averting his attention to the lump of gray, spearow lifted himself into the air, noting his feathery's companion quivering form as she shook something fierce in reaction to being hit.
peering at the pair he was facing in battle, his eyes glowed a dim shade of red before he released a growl that distorted the surrounding airs.
the wild spearow was hit by tackle! the wild spearow used leer! the wild spearow used growl!
once she was hit she proceeded to suffer from the overwhelming emotion that caused her to tremble and croon. she flapped her wings once or twice, but could not right herself any longer. moving only resulted in her awkwardly tripping over herself. hiding her face with her small wings, she attempted to make herself appear smaller - hoping desperately that spearow would come to her aid - perhaps the human and his purple monster would forget her.
the wild pidgey was hit by scratch! the wild pidgey appears to be panicking!
Cael was relieved when the spearow had been thrown off him, but several aching bumps were left beneath that red hair of his. He shook through it with a hand, scratching at a few of the bumps before turning his attention to Lana and Spearow. Despite the way he had treated her and his foul words, she had come to his rescue. Cael could have teared up just then.
As if. He scowled when the spearow took the defensive. Those eyes... Cael didn't like those eyes of his. It was like the bird and him were the same being, and it pissed Cael off.
"Ha! Those sorts of things aren't a threat to us." Cael nodded toward the spearow, more upset than confident at the moment. "Lana, show him what you can do!"
Only a few minutes ago, Cael had been dissing his partner. She was weak and frail—a pathetic piece of trash on his team. But now that was he was in the heat of the battle and seeking vengeance, Lana couldn't have come at a better time.
Lana shuddered in spot when Spearow not only leered her down, but growled as well to further show dominance. She was a bit frightened, frankly, but as the castform heard her trainer's orders, a hopeful warmth filled her. If her trainer believed her... then yes... yes!! She could do it! She could win this battle!
The castform could not leer or growl back at the bird. In fact, she only had one move in her arsenal, but darnit, she'd deliver her best tackle!
An expression of admiration that underscored the minute swelling of approval from him to Cael flickered upon his face. Perhaps, this show of comradery showed some sort of hope, some sort of chance for the weak sinew they called a relationship.
Marcus couldn't help but feel sorry for their avian counterpart, but noticing his empty Pokeballs attached to his waist, he realized that this was a chance he could not pass up.
"Sand Attack," Marcus commanded calmly to his chimp, and as Aipom attacked, he hoped that the Pidgey was distracted enough for a quick capture.
Throwing one of his vacant balls, he prayed the bird would come to him without a fuss.

spearow had little time to react to the castform's charge. he had been distracted by his future's mate distress as she was splashed by a collection of sand. and could only release a noise of surprise as the pretty pidgey was successfully absorbed into the red and white machinery. the male's look slowly morphed from shock to terrible fury as he attempted to dive for the capsule - intending to flee with it.
the wild spearow was hit by tackle! it was a critical hit! the wild spearow is attempting to escape with pidgey's capsule!
pidgey released a strangled noise as dust slapped against her face. flapping uselessly, she attempted to free herself of the burning irritation. her reddened eyes cracked open, revealing a blurred world. suddenly there was darkness - warmth. she felt a little better. she hoped spearow would be alright.
the wild pidgey was hit by sand attack! breeder marcus has successfully captured pidgey! the wild spearow intends to steal pidgey's capsule!
Lana's tackle had been spot on, and she was proud of it! Her eyes frantically looked toward Cael's expression to see if he was proud of her. He had to be! And perhaps he had been, for a few seconds, but then he showed irritation.
"Hey!" Cael called out to the thieving spearow. "Where do you think you're going!" He reached for his belt, unlatching an empty pokeball and enlarging it at the press of the button. In the midst of her search for praise, Lana hadn't even noticed her enemy had taken to the now caught pidgey, attempting to fly off.
Cael could care less about Marcus losing his new pokemon. He wasn't doing him a favor. But he wasn't going to let this spearow get away. Catching the bird wasn't even on his mind, but the pokeball spun from his hand nonetheless, aimed to hit against Spearow's small body. Cael simply didn't want to let this spearow escape from him after pecking at his head.
