■ what doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Today was a good day to start an adventure! Clear skies, light breezes, and her new Pokemon at her side! Fidel smiled for the umpteenth time at the Poke Ball containing her first partner. Magikarp was really cool, as far as she was concerned! When she saw it in the lake, with it's brilliant orange scales and smooth swimming, she thought it was perfect for her. As it is, Magikarp was totally friendly too, which was a win-win situation, as far as she was concerned! [break][break] Confidence welled in the girl's spirit. The idea of Pokemon Trainer was an honorable one, indeed, given that the entire world revolved around the relationship between humans and Pokemon. Becoming a Trainer was considered a form of growth, that final step to adulthood that children realize. With these traditions in mind, it made Fidel feel like she was truly powerful in this huge world, like there was nothing but victory awaiting her. [break][break] In her excitement, she entertained a rather childish thought. Why not walk up to the first trainer she meets and ask for a battle? She was due for her first battle, of course, and it was always good to learn from experience. Magikarp seemed up to the task, so, in the true spirit of Pokemon, Trainers, and training Pokemon, she marched right up to the first individual who looked to also be a trainer. [break][break] She seemed like the strong type, to Fidel. She was a bit older than her, and looked like she was fresh out of high school. Well, there was no better time than now. Puffing her chest and smiling endlessly, the twelve-year old girl spoke to the eighteen-year old known as Andrea Warren. "Hey, excuse me! Could I have a Pokemon battle? It's my first one!" The little girl seemed like she was prepared to take on anything with luck and a smile on her face. [break][break] But she wasn't prepared for her heart to shatter in a few minutes.

The young woman regarded the petite female with a quirked eyebrow and an amused glint in her eye. Before her approach, the coordinator had been leaning against a building, chewing on a particularly tough piece of packaged chocolate. Andrea continued to chew before swallowing and wetting her lips with her tongue. Hunger still gnawed at her belly, but she ignored it in favor of the little girl settled before her very eyes. She was likely fresh out of the lab, her face revealing naught more than absolute innocence. Andrea resisted the desire to chortle, merely smiling in response to the eager display.
"Alrightie," she chirped. "One on one it is, baby girl."
She crooned the words, eager to start up the match despite the short notice. Hopefully her starter was somethin' decent. Andrea was in no mood for any amount of weakness - especially from someone so young.
"Hope yer a lil' familiar with the game, baby girl," Andrea continued. "'cause we're about to start."
Her gaze wandered, and she nodded once she realized that they could take up a portion of unoccupied street for their battle. The weather was good, albeit a little cloudy. But the heat was a bit of a bother. At least there was a breeze to take note of. After assessing her surroundings, Andrea moved to take up a position where both her and the girl were settled a fair distance away from one another.
"Come on out, Sheeva!"
The coordinator tossed the capsule into the air, and from it, a small blue dragon appeared. She stood, eyeing the small female that faced her with interest. Snapping her jaws, the Bagon flashed her prominent teeth as malice danced in her gaze.
"Yer turn," Andrea called.

Oh, that was a super cool looking Pokemon! And the trainer was super cool, too! Maybe she could catch a Pokemon like that when she traveled Hoenn. Or maybe a really awesome Dragon Pokemon! ...Wait, was that a Dragon Pokemon? It looked more like the type of Pokemon that lives in the mountains. Do Dragon Pokemon live in the mountains? Er... well, she'd catch something cool, that was for sure. And then it would breathe fire, and shoot lasers out of it's eyes, and...[break][break] Pokemon battle! In front of you! Snapping out of her coolness-stimulated daydream, she took out her own Poke Ball. It felt right. It felt like it belonged in her palm, ready to be thrown at any moment. Fidel couldn't really describe the feeling of having a Poke Ball before a Pokemon battle, but it just felt amazing. At least, for now. "Yeah, alright! I'll do my best, lady! Go, Magikarp!"[break][break] The orange fish flopped about on the ground. It's eyes were kinda-sorta-directed on the Bagon, sure, but it was still flailing about. Er... maybe she should have found a body of water nearby? Wait, but then how would fish trainers fight in the desert? She knew there were fish trainers, and she knew there were deserts. Fish trainers fought in the desert, right? Then she should be perfectly fine![break][break] Whatever the case, it was no time to worry about it now. She had already begun the fight. Steeling her resolve, Fidel pointed a triumphant finger towards the battle, exerting her command as strongly as a twelve year old could muster. That is to say, she gave a loud squeak. "Magikarp, do an attACK!" Her voice cracked at that last part.[break][break]
Magikarp used Splash.[break][break] But nothing happened.

Andrea's face twisted into bewilderment at first. She appeared to be at a loss of words when she was presented with the Magikarp. She expected it to boast some sort of impressive move, but, when the girl's command resulted in a useless flailing she laughed. It was a genuine laugh, one filled with absolute amusement. Throwing her head back, she continued to giggle and guffaw at the outrageous show.
"What is this? A joke?"
She instantly sobered, a gleam entering her eye. Sheeva remained idle, staring at the fish with a stoic expression on her face as she awaited her mistress's command.
"Yes, it has to be. Are you fucking kidding me? I ain't a fan of that kinda shit, baby girl," she jeered.
Sensing the oncoming command, the Bagon stood ready.
"Use Rage. And then use it again."
Sheeva glowed a pale shade of crimson before she lunged forward, maw opening wide as she moved to grip onto the Magikarp with her mouth and shake the water-tpe with a terrible snarl. The move encouraged the violence, and she shook her head from side to side furiously as she sought to harm the defenseless creature. A slow grin formed on Andrea's face all the while.

■ what doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Her heart begun to crack rapidly.[break][break]
Fidel's confidence plummeted as Magikarp did nothing. What? But... no, maybe it didn't hear her. Trying to make the best of it, she called out to her sole Pokemon again. "Magikarp, try agai-" And then the lady started jeering at her, calling her names. It made her feel terrible inside, like she was worthless, useless. She never truly felt this feeling of failure until now, and it hurt really bad.[break][break]
"St-Stop!" She said to the woman, before the Bagon started it's relentless assault on Magikarp. The fish could do nothing but gasp for water and wiggle weakly as the Dragon took it between it's jaws and treated it no better than a chew toy. Magikarp looked at Fidel with it's eyes, asking why this happened. Inside, she was repeating, I don't know, I don't know, but outside, she was watching with a hopeless expression.[break][break]
"Magikarp... Magikarp, please, please, do something!" She gave the frantic command, hoping that Magikarp did something. Hoping that the first time was a fluke, that it just didn't hear her, that the only reason was because the Bagon wasn't close enough or some other stupid variable that prevented Magikarp from doing anything to defend itself. The lady's laughing from before seemed to echo in her mind, but she watched Magikarp with bated breath. It would do something... It had to do something![break][break]
Magikarp used Splash.[break][break]
But nothing happened.[break][break]
The fish flailed in an attempt to stay alive, but to no avail. The fangs of the Bagon sunk into it, and it's struggle was visibly becoming weaker. It's trainer was visibly becoming weaker, too. Her shoulders slumped and her chest deflated. Magikarp didn't do anything. "Magikarp..." She was about to utter a command; no, a request. Commands required too much strength for her to handle at the moment. Instead, what came out was a whimpering apology.[break][break]
"Just try to get out of there, I'm sorry..." Tears started forming at the corners of her eyes, and her knees were getting weaker. She held her tears back. Fidel hated crying. All the prissy girls cried, and crying meant she was weak. She... she was a Pokemon Trainer now! Ready to take on land or sea or air! But at the moment, she was having serious doubts about that. How could she take on the world, when she couldn't even fight in her own town?[break][break]
Maybe she wasn't a Pokemon Trainer. Maybe she should have never tried.
They will not force us They will stop degrading us They will not control us
We will be victorious
Sheeva tottered a bit as the Magikarp began to struggle and flail within her jaws. But her grip remained persistent, her mouth strong enough to retain the poor creature despite its desperation. Her crimson glow only strengthen as a result, her attack power increasing gradually.
"Keep it going girl," Andrea shouted, blatantly ignoring the girl's grief.
The Bagon shook her head fiercely once more, intent on harming the Magikarp further by treating it as though it was little more than a toy. The Pokemon didn't appear to mind the ruthlessness of this act. She actually appeared to enjoy it, a small smile playing upon her features as she reveled in the creature's helplessness.
"That's my girl," Andrea praised, chuckling roughly. "Now, toss it up!"
Sheeva paused her attack, allowing for it to fade before she moved her head and opened her mouth simultaneously so that the water-type was slung into the air.
"Ember!"
"Bagon!"
The Pokemon's mouth opened once more and she proceeded to rapidly fire molten bits toward the water-type.
"Tough luck, baby girl," Andrea drawled.

And as she saw her Pokemon tossed into the air, her heart broke.[break][break]
Fidel shouted the following phrase in alarm, not wanting to see her only partner hurt. Magikarp had been tossed up, laid aside, and pummeled. Technically, Magikarp fainted, and the battle had ended; it was no longer fit for battle, after that throw. It didn't deserve any of this. So, in complete and utter panic, she gave up loudly. "I forfeit! I- MAGIKARP!" All she saw was fire and something she truly cared for with all her heart. And then she saw that something falling towards the fire.[break][break]
In an act of selfless stupidity, Fidel ran into the battle area and attempted to catch Magikarp. Her arms in the line of fire, she was suddenly wracked with pain as the feeling of hard scales came down upon her. She didn't even notice Magikarp's weight on her hands; no, her mind was preoccupied with the searing heat and rapidly dying skin. It was unbearable, unacceptable to her body, so her legs collapsed and she fell to the floor on her waist.[break][break]
Fidel cried openly at the pain of her burned arms, clenching her teeth and supporting Magikarp the best she could. Magikarp was shocked at what she did, and concerned more for her health than it's own, despite it's fading consciousness. It's sole upward eye looked to her agonized face as she weakly attempted to move her hand. It hurt. Her entire hand burst into pain as she attempted to move her muscle to grab Magikarp's Poke Ball.[break][break]
The movement of her arm was slow, agonizing, long. All other voices seemed to be tuned out by her pain. Slowly but surely, she grabbed the smooth surface of the Poke Ball. With the same amount of difficulty as before, she opened the Poke Ball and withdrew Magikarp. Finally, when she was done with her own business, she looked up to whoever and whatever was there.

Castiel heaved a sigh as she balanced the bags of Pokemon treats in her arms. Her Munchlax trotted ahead happily popping some of them in his mouth. It was insane on how a little creature could eat so much food in such a little amount of time. But she didn't bother trying to understand it and instead smiled at his happiness. It had only been a few days since she had arrived in Littleroot, and in the back of her mind - she wondered where that girl was. Munchlax glanced back at his trainer and observed the slight distant look in her eyes as she stared blankly forward on their path. There were times where Castiel seemed to be distant even to the point where she would forget that he was in the room. This was one of those times and he couldn't help but wonder what was going on in her head to cause her to blank out like that.
Before he could bring her back to reality, he could hear a distressed cry. He turned to look and the first thing that he saw was a familiar person. He brightened up immensely and bounced from one foot to the other reaching out to grab Castiel's skirt and tug on it. But then he saw something else. Molten bits of rock, the same that burnt his fur all those days ago, were being shot into the sky towards an injured Pokemon. And a little girl had gotten into the way. Castiel didn't have time to react before noticing her Munchlax running to the girl's side. Her hand shot out to grab onto him before the scene unfolded before her eyes. The Pokemon treats dropped to the ground, left behind and forgotten by the two.
Munchlax made it before Castiel got there. Skidding in front of the girl and holding his arms out in front of the Bagon. Even though he feared being on the receiving end of those flames, he knew that the girl was in trouble. The Pokemon was gone and she was doubled over. He could smell something burning but refused to turn around. In situations like this, someone had to be strong and resilient. Even if he was afraid, he had to protect her. Focusing on the woman, he couldn't help but feel confused. This was the person that was near his trainer, the person that made her smile a little, that made her seem more excited and happy. So why would this person do anything bad?
Castiel fell to her knees near the child and reached out to touch her shoulder. The child was holding a Pokeball in her hand, and the flesh on her arm was burned and deteriorating. Castiel's eyes were wide in horror as she could see the discoloration of the flesh and hesitated to touch it before retracting her hand that curled into a fist.
"Munchlax, watch her."
Castiel hadn't taken a moment to see who had done this. But upon standing to her feet and turning to face the girl's attacker, her eyes widened and she wished that it wasn't true.
"Andrea?"
She remembered the other woman excitedly telling her about her Bagon egg when they first met. The Pokemon in front of her was a Bagon, Bagons were capable of using Ember. This was a Pokemon battle, and because of Andrea's Bagon - a child was injured. The look in Castiel's eyes morphed from one of astonishment into disappointment and mild disgust.
They will not force us They will stop degrading us They will not control us
We will be victorious
"What?"
"Bag?"
Both Pokemon and coordinator froze, eyes widening as they visibly struggled to comprehend the sudden turn of events. What should have been a neat end to such a one-sided battle resulted in an injured girl and a familiar woman whom peered at them with obvious discontent. Both Castiel and Andi stood in defense of both the felled water-type and its human companion. Andrea retreated a step, admittedly intimidated as she realized how terrible this appeared. Her gaze shifted and she inwardly thanked Arceus that no one else was around to witness this spectacle.
"No."
The word was uttered, quiet and chocked with emotion.
"No. Don't ya dare fucking look at me like that, Castiel."
Andrea had rarely addressed the woman by her full title. But at this very moment, she had decided to, wanting to emphasize her own seriousness.
"Because ya know what? It ain't my fault. It ain't my bad," she replied. "Baby girl over there was the one who approached me for a battle. She agreed to fight me. Even when she had that Pokemon she continued to battle with me. She only forfeited when she decided to run in front of Sheeva's attack like a fuckin' idiot. Ya hear me?"
The Bagon released a low growl, her mistress's infectious anger clouding her own mind.
"C'mere, Sheeva," Andrea called, her tone surprisingly gentle. "Ya did nothin' wrong, girl. I'll handle this."
Once the Pokemon was settled at her heel, the disgruntled coordinator huffed.
"We gotta get her and that fish some medical attention. Thought she'd accept her loss and take the damn thing herself. But obviously, she couldn't handle it."
rock head - - lvl 06 - - healthy rage - - protect - - ember
'You absolute dunce.' She said this to herself in her mind when she heard all these words. The lady was right. She was an idiot to try to intervene with the battle. She should never have tried to battle in the first place. You stupid idiot, you useless little girl. Fidel lowered her head in shame, knowing that she had really reached the pinnacle of stupidity.[break][break]
She was a disappointment, there was no questioning that. She should have never become a trainer, not at this rate. She put Magikarp in danger and herself in danger, both needlessly. Home-schooled, sheltered, uneducated. She should have studied more, learned more about the world before setting out to do the impossible.[break][break]
She still wanted an adventure. She was still Fidel Bolivar. She still loved Magikarp. But what she just did? Absolute shame on her. She couldn't return to the town, she thought. The Professor would know, and then her parents would know, and then she'd never go on an adventure again. Her idiocy probably cost her the dream of being a Pokemon Trainer.[break][break]
So, where was there to go? She didn't want to go home, but her arms still hurt so much, so, so much. Magikarp also needed help. A third option appeared to her. Oldale Town. She'd just go there and heal up. It wasn't that far, just a few hours walk. She cried more as she picked herself off of the ground. Even the faintest breeze hurt her burning arms.[break][break]
She turned around. She couldn't look at the lady, nor at the other person who just appeared. She couldn't look at anybody, really. She'd been too much of a disgrace. Making her mind, Fidel attempted to limp away from that empty street without a word. Of course, choking back sobs and falling teardrops may have ruined the effect.[break][break]
Route 101. All she had to do was get to Route 101...

Andrea was right.
No, she was more than right. A Pokemon Battle was a sacred act between trainers and their partners to show their ability. Losses were meant to be learned from and victories were lessons that had been used. Even a child had to learn such a thing, no matter how harsh it had been. Castiel forgoed showing the initial shock that came from Andrea speaking her name. Ever since their first encounter, the other woman rarely used her title. Overcoming her initial reaction Castiel heaved a heavy sigh and brushed her fingers against Munchlax's fur.
He wasn't entirely sure what was happening or why, but he didn't like the idea of the two pf them fighting. He tugged on Castiel's skirt and opened his mouth to get her attention before noticing the girl had gotten up. He flailed and pointed back causing Castiel's attention to switch. She was hurt. The skin on her arns were detriorating and she seemed so pitiful. But there was no pity in her eyes, she snapped her fingers and Munchlax used Lick.
His tongue shot out to wrap around the girl's leg and hold her in place. Castiel took in a deep breath and her expression steeled.
"A Pokemon Trainer is not always the strongest. There are times of weakness when one's expectations are shot. You were foolish to believe that you could win so soon. Gauging your opponent, believing in your Pokemon, training and forging a bond. You did not do such things and thus defeat is your teacher. Even children have to learn such a thing."
Crossing the bit of distance between them, Castiel removed her shirt in the process leaving her in a bra that she wore underneath. Without asking, she ripped it in half and reached out to tie one part around each of the girl's arms to at least keep the wounds from infection. She looked to her Munchlax as he retracted his tongue at her command.
"You must feel discontent at losing. But there is no shame in forfeting for the life of a friend when you know you are beaten. It isn't a matter of handling but knowing what is right at the time."
She held the girl's shoulder and gave a curt nod to Andrea.
"We will take you to heal your wounds and your Pokemon. If you try to resist, I will carry you over my shoulder. Do I make myself clear?"

Andrea struggled to maintain her already slim reservoir of patience. The girl's attempt to progress toward the wilds left her utterly speechless at first. Afterward, anger quickly clouded her sense of reason.
"Is she stupid? Is she fuckin' slow or somethin'?"
The coordinator's accent grew heavy as she continued, her anger swelling significantly by the time she fully comprehended the young trainer's intentions. Andrea's temper prevented her from even relishing the sight of Castiel - whom had tugged off her top. As the woman wielded the material as a makeshift bandage, the female visibly struggled to reign in her own foul mood. Which was a terrible challenge in and of itself.
"Are ya tryin' to die, girl? I'm not sure why Prof would even get ya a Pokemon when ya obviously don't know what the fuck yer doin'."
Andrea spat upon the ground.
"Ya go out there with that knocked out Magikarp reekin' of fuckin' weakness and cooked skin and yer gonna become a fast meal. You'll kill both yerself and yer Pokemon. If ya wanna die then go right on ahead and take that chance, because, honestly, I hate that kinda ignorant bullshit. Cas might be able to deal with it, but I can't stand it. Ya get me? Ya hear me, lil' idiot?"
Andrea retreated a step and waved her hands in a dismissive gesture.
"'mm done. See ya later, Cas. And come back when yer worth a damn, baby girl."
Sheeva remained for a few moments longer, her eyes still gleaming with curiosity before she barked a farewell to Munchlax and hurried after her mistress.

To be fair, her twelve year old mind had a tough time comprehending both people at the same time, in terms of how she should view herself. On one hand, the lady who beat her said she was a fucking moron, and should probably never go on a Pokemon adventure. On the other hand, the lady who was helping her said she was a fucking moron (she thinks), but would maybe-probably get better someday. For all intents and purposes, Fidel took both as negative, and spiraled deeper into her sadness.[break][break]
"D-D-Don't..." She started between sniffles and sobs, her crying threatening to intensify due to the harsh words of Andrea and the confusing words of Castiel. Yes, she was terrible at this game, and yes, she had no idea what she was doing, but she had to establish something before the remaining woman did anything. "D-Don't call my p-parents, or the, the professor." She whimpered. "I don't want any, anybody to k-know, o-or I'll, I'll never go on this adventure!" And so Fidel sobbed more, her deep disappointment at herself and fear of losing adventure mixing with the searing pain in her arms.[break][break]
In her mind, if anybody of authority knew, her parents would get too protective and cut her off from going on an adventure. It was an immediate game over. She would brave even the worst Fire attack to go on this adventure; it was her dream for too many years. She'd follow the lady wherever she lead her, sure. But anything, absolutely anything but letting her dream die.[break][break]
She'd get better at battling, good enough to make Magikarp strong! She just didn't want it all to end. She didn't deserve Magikarp. She probably should have been burned worse, for all she knew. But at the very least, she could try to earn Magikarp and her health. Her body wracked with shivers as she thought all this, somewhat deliriously. How could she be in a straight state of mind? She'd just gotten second to third degree burns and lost horrendously in what would have been a major milestone in her life.[break][break]
"I-I'll come w-with you, I'll do whatever y-you want, just, just," She started, trying to hold back her chokes and tears. She attempted to look at Castiel in the eye. However, as her own hazel eyes met Castiel's stern expression, she just felt worse and shivered more, looking away quickly. "P-Please, don't tell my, my parents!" At this point, Fidel sounded like she was begging for mercy. In a way, she was.[break][break] "I don't want my adventure to end!" Fidel said at the start of her adventure.
Post by castiel leingod on May 28, 2015 13:17:47 GMT
At Andrea's departure, Castiel couldn't help but feel the sting in her words. It slipped her mind that this girl was simply a child. She was young and impressionable and had a far too wide outlook on a world that was cruel. Looking to the beaten child that stood in her grasp, Castiel couldn't help but see a mirrored reflection. She sighed and lowered her head for a moment trying to find an answer. Anything that could give this girl her confidence back. But once something was lost, it was gone forever and the scars set in. Instead of yelling at her or giving her a stern expression again, Castiel wrapped her arms around the girl's middle and hugged her close. She hugged her as she wished her mother had hugged her all those years ago when sadness and rage set in. But that was this and this was now, and maybe she was using this child and her feelings as a way to make up for her own.
"Don't worry, I won't tell them."
She stood to her feet and placed her hands on Fidel's shoulders. Offering her a kind smile, one that was quite rare for Castiel, she gestured for her Munchlax to come closer. The Pokemon trotted over and looked up at the girl before fishing in his fur and taking out a little berry. It was one of the ones that he stored for a rainy day. But he waved it in front of her as to get her attention as a peace offering. However, a Munchlax can't resist food and soon his mouth began to water and he popped the berry into his mouth swallowing it whole. It took a few minutes for him to come to a point of shame and he glanced up at Castiel who shook her head with a little smile.
"The two of us will continue on. I'll help you as much as I can. But what I need you to do is have faith in Magikarp."
She placed her hand on the back of her Munchlax's head and the two shared a smile.
