And finally, after all that rushing around, he was there- exactly where he wanted and had promised to be and where he wanted to be. Kind of. Petalburg's festivities weren't really something he cared about enough to not want to miss regardless of the occasion, and they weren't big enough to really care about. Sentiments were stupid, and people who held them even stupider.
But fireworks were nice.
And so sitting on his small little bench (he had managed to get the best seat in the house somehow) he waited for the fireworks to begin. His hair was done all nice and proper, his hands used as little stands for the rest of his body as he stared up into the sky, watching the sun make pretty colors with the clouds.
To be honest he wasn't expecting to see Nat here- he'd assumed she'd purposefully avoid him and he couldn't really blame her since it was his fault she hated him with all her guts. That was one chance missed, he supposed, and although there was regret Julius had already decided to ignore regret. Why regret if you could avenge? He sighed, wondering just how easy it was to become a hypocrite.
So when he turned to the side and saw the familiar shower of golden hair, his face lit up in pleasant surprise. He watched as she walked by his bench, either unaware of his presence or completely ignoring him. Either way, as she walked by he took the change to grab onto her hand- lightly, just barely brushing his fingers against hers.
"Hi." he said, almost unheard among all the noise and chatter.

It had taken her time away from people to simmer down. Upon reflection, Natalie came to accept the fact that maybe she shouldn't have overreacted and maybe she shouldn't have played dumb and the entire matter could have been settled peacefully. It was embarrassing to think about now, and if anyone tried to bring it up, she might have laughed it off nervously and then thrown something at people to get them to shut up.
Besides, there was the lovely festival she had been looking forward to. The summer night was warm, but not to warrant a need to tie her hair up. She still had that same bucket hat on. She had been wandering around some of the stalls, picking up treats and playing games like a child. It was nice to feel young again, as she idly wandered the beach with an ice lolly in hand, passing through the swarms of people as she searched for a place to sit to wait for the firework show to begin.
She felt a gentle but sudden tug on her hand, and Natalie yelped. "Wha--!" Her eyes darted to the offender and a frown creased on her face almost instantly. Him. That horrible, horrible person that Natalie didn't even think deserved to be named. He was the last person she wanted to see today. Just the perfect damn thing to ruin her mood. She snatched her arm away from him like he had bitten her like a snake. "What do you want?" she snapped crossly. She did not need to deal with this. Not today.

Hmm. That was a bad start, definitely. He probably looked like a creep with that hand holding attempt, and was almost glad when Nat pulled away as if she had seen a roach. It meant that an apology would mean something, anyway. When was the last time he apologized for something? He didn't remember, but it was probably for a girl about some silly misunderstanding, just like this one.
He tried to not smile, maybe seem a little more serious. He wasn't sure if he took this seriously, but it was probably his fault for making fun of her name. So when he did have her attention, he immediately stood up and vacated his amazing firework seat (wow- if someone sat down on it he'd probably regret talking to her now...) and looked at her in the eye and said, "Hey, look. I just wanted to apologize about what happened earlier."
His hand shifted awkwardly to his hair, scratching it innocently. He wasn't usually good with these kind of things, and he wasn't sure how much the girl hated him. Wincing while remembering her expression when he had touched her, he quickly continued. "It was totally my fault."
His tone was sincere enough to be believed and he was truly sorry, even if a small part of him still blamed her for being so cute about the whole thing- what was he going to do if he hadn't laughed, honestly? "Can I, ah, make it up to you?" he asked, a little hopeful he could get this out of the way. Nat was cute, but he was sure she wasn't the flirty type- and while annoying people was always fun, it wasn't as entertaining if they took it so seriously. Especially girls.
God, he remembered that one time in junior high he'd made that one girl cry...awkward.

She thought she had gotten over it, but Nat was clearly wrong. She only saw red before her eyes as she spoke to Julius. He may have had a cute face and reminded her horribly of her best friend cum ex husband, but she hadn't exactly forgotten. She was hardly the most forgiving of sorts of people. "What do you want?" she asked again, not quite sure what to make of his seat offering.
An apology. The rational half of Nat was telling her to accept it and move on with her life, but after that horrible incident this afternoon, she wasn't feeling all too forgiving. "You were an asshole," she said pointedly and unabashedly. The more aware of the fact he was, the better. The frown on her face wasn't clearing.
She moved to take his seat, figuring she might as well get it now. It was only after she was comfortably seated did she notice how good the view was. "Nice view," she commented, eyeing the scenery for a while before she crossed her arms and tapped her finger against the crook of her elbow. "Well, you suggest. What are you offering?" She couldn't decide if she was ready to forgive him just yet. She had the rest of the day to figure that out.

Oh fuck. He was so not good at playing the nice type- it worked for a day or a while, but he just wasn't used to apologizing. He liked annoying people. It was fun. But often times with girls he took it too far, and right now he did want to apologize, but this girl was being a prissy little princess here and his hopeful smile wore stale the more wide it became.
He wanted to force himself to look all meek and cute when she called him an asshole but it wasn't working. His goofy smile was just looking more and more sarcastic as she spoke. "You're the one who took things way too seriously," hje pouted, almost like a child. He then bit his lip like he was being scolded long before she could speak, and then came up with a better plan to raise his hands in surrender.
"Sorry," he said, wondering just how hard it was to kill old habits. It appeared like she wasn't the kind to just be like 'oh no it's alright, no problem' and allow him to swifty move out of her life and her to swiftly move out of his. Instead, she wanted this to be long and boring for the both of them.
Fine.
He sighed and sat down next to her, still slightly annoyed he was sharing his seat with someone but deciding to shut his trap instead. "The best seat in the house," he mumbled, looking into the sky.

She shrugged at his comment. Being serious wasn't a bad thing. Sometimes you needed that push for authority that few people respected. "You made fun of my name," she pointed out bluntly. Not that her name was Nathaniel, but it didn't hurt to keep him in the dark about that. She kind of liked watching his reaction to the whole affair, to be honest.
At least he wasn't being as aggressive as he had been yesterday. She found it refreshing to be in control of the situation; liked it, even. She took a look at the surroundings, looking pleased with the arrangement. "Is that all?" she asked with an air of nonchalance. If she could extort a little more from him, why not? She liked the sound of being the boss for once.
Act like an asshole, then sprinkle a sparing amount of niceties amongst it to look like less of a bad guy. "Well, it is a pretty good seat in the house," she admitted. She looked towards the sea wistfully as the ocean breeze came in. Her hair whipped wildly. "Colour me impressed."
Post by Julius Kingston on Jun 5, 2015 13:48:49 GMT
He smiled at that. She was acting calmer, more rational. Serious and logical. Those were the kinds of people he liked- the ones that could take command of things and sort them out. Leaders. He looked at Nat with a renewed sense of like, the edges of his mouth curling up enough to reveal some of his pearly teeth. "I never made fun of your name," he said, quickly putting his hands in his lap and looking at her as though he was challenging her. "You said your name was Nat, didn't you? And you never did tell me if your name was Nathaniel or not, so I just questioned the legitimacy of it." He smiled triumphantly, wondering in all earnest if she'd answer that obvious question or not.
His smile parted to let out a woosh of air as she nonchalantly disregarded his seating. Tough love, much? He shook his head dramatically. "I'm afraid that is all this poor man can give you, m'lady," he said, half annoyed and half genuinely impressed at the girl's growing indifference. The ocean breeze kicked in and Nat's hair flew around in the wind, the golden locks tangling and untangling at nature's fancy. She was pretty, even Julius had to admit.
"Why thank you," He said, although the compliment felt so half-hearted he was tempted to roll his eyes. "So if you won't tell me your name, at least tell me what you do? You a coordinator?" He asked, looking over to her, and possibly implying with this eyes that she was suited for it.
If she hated coordinating and things flipped over on him again, he'd officially give up.

The last thing she wanted was a fight right now. There was promise of fireworks and people were going to start staring at her if she started anything. She had to be the better person in this scenario. Nat sucked in her cheeks, trying not to get upset. "Well. Nat will do. Everyone's called me that, and it's been perfectly fine all along. It isn't complicated." Why everyone saw some need to ask for her full name, she wasn't sure. Natalie was an alright name, lovely in the eyes of some, but she was ambivalent about it. It didn't warrant being questioned or being prodded about it, either way. She appreciated neither.
All he could offer for her was this nice seat. At least it was a nice seat, Nat rationalised, although she supposed it could be nicer if he left her be to have it to herself and her Pokemon. If she gave her friend a ring, he could probably get down here nice and quick to join her... She didn't want to inconvenience the guy, though.
"I'm a traveller. My parents were interested in volcanic research, so we moved to Lavaridge when I was young. I'm finally allowed to go around and explore the region on my own, though." Call it obsessively protective or just concerned. It had been stifling. Nat conveniently left out the part where she was totally busy dating her best friend and being married to them. "Coordinating was never my cup of tea... Too clumsy for that sort of thing."
She was smiling again. She swung her feet merrily like a child.

"Fine, that's more than fair enough," he said, throwing his hands into the air. He liked arguing, but he sensed she didn't, and he decided to just let it be. He'd probably made her angry enough for one day and everything he was doing here was just to let her chill it out while watching fireworks. To end things on a happy note and walk away. So trodding on toes was something he'd need to watch out for.
Honestly he didn't want to give her the seat at first and he definitely hadn't invited her to sit on it. According to the grand scheme she was supposed to say something along the lines of 'it's okay' and then walk away. Instead he was left with a small bench, a cute blonde, and a heck lot of space between him and her. Pretty much the definition of an awkward beach party.
"Volcanic research, huh?" He asked, unable to hide his interest at the words. And then she revealed that she didn't like being bound to a certain place and he nodded in sympathy. "Yeah, I agree. Limiting yourself to a single place or object is never good when it comes to research. Travelling's an easy escape from all of that." He nodded, showing that he agreed with her decision to move around a bit.
"Eh?" he asked, laughing a little at her childish leg-swinging antics. "I can see that," he said, automatically. Crap. "Well I mean, I can see you wouldn't be interesting in something like coordinating."

If Julius was thinking about anything, Natalie wasn't picking up on it. She was too busy being merry in her own little world to bother with the small stuff, even if her own happiness right now was being exchanged for Julius'. Her gaze was beyond the grass and sand, extending towards the wide expanse of blue making sloshing sounds against the shore. "Mm hmm," she spoke absentmindedly. "My mother likes rare rocks, father's a geologist. The rest of it is history."
She didn't really want to bore him with the details of their romance. From what she understood, it had been sweet. She was kind of envious, wished it had worked out the same for her. She wasn't too upset, either way. Not bound by a relationship, she was now free to travel as she wished. "I'm not escaping," she pointed out, as though she was doing this to run away from her problems.
If anything, she was tackling the problem of not getting to see the world straight on by doing it in her youth. There was no time to waste, as her brief marriage had proven to her. Natalie shot him a glare, having caught what Julius' said. She raised a brow with a high arch, not quite believing that was what he said. She studied him critically, as though trying to get him to admit to what he had just said, before her gaze softened. She wasn't interested in getting into another fight.
"I may have two left feet, but they both kick as hard," she remarked, although it had been more of a snippy comment than one deliberately looking for a fight.

Nat seemed too be having a lot of other things in her mind, as if she was in a separate world from him. He was fine with just staring around for now- watching her watching the sky and then turning up to check if the fireworks had started without him noticing. But they hadn't. So instead he put his hands behind his back, used them as support and he let his head be lazily supported by his back, and he listened. Listening wasn't something he did a lot but it was a nice change of roles.
The girl seemed so normal- a breath of fresh air compared to Andrea. The adorable relationship of her parents seemed like a once in a lifetime thing, and it made Julius think about it for a bit. He'd never really dreamed of a girlfriend or a cutesy lover, so it was a foreign concept. He smiled at her stubbornness, and dcided to say nothing in response. The sunsent was pretty enough to warrant his silence.
He laughed at her comment, a happy one, not necessarily rude. "You don't have to take everything so seriously, you know." He let out a sigh, and then then the first little star shot out at the sky, and the fireworks display began...
Post by NATALIE OSWALD on Jun 19, 2015 13:26:10 GMT
Awkward silence had settled between the two of them, but Natalie didn't seem to mind. She seemed content with silences. Those usually spoke volumes instead of mindless chatter about things she didn't quite care as much about. She was making herself comfortable on the seat herself as she talked about her parents. They were nice people, good people.
Natalie just hoped that she wasn't being a bad person for trying to help out with their researching by joining Magma for this purpose. She stole a quick glance a Julius, wondering what people like him thought about Magma. She wasn't even sure if she really wanted to know. Her eyes fell to the ground when he talked about being serious. It wasn't like she could help it. She tried to be a little more focused and disciplined in her everyday life. "It's not a bad thing," she shrugged, "Besides, I can have fun too."
Light sprang from the corner of her eye and Natalie craned her neck upwards to watch the first firework burst to life in the sky. "Oh!" Natalie gasped in awe, watching the sky fill with colours and light. "They're beautiful..." She couldn't remember the last time she watched fireworks. She must have been a child then, wandering the festivals held around Lavaridge.
Reminiscing gave her an odd sense of nostalgia. Natalie found herself unconsciously leaning into the dark haired man. She felt her ear bump into his shoulder, and Natalie tensed, sitting upright immediately. Her face was starting to burn up. "S-Sorry! I-- I should go." She tried to shuffle out of the crowd.

Indeed, if Nat had told him that she was affiliated to magma he might have possible tossed her into the water right then. Criminals were criminals by affiliation- and although generalizing could be painful, it was necessary. Otherwise it would be impossible to create a new world. But enough about that- goals had their place and so did pretty blondes and fireworks. Julius try to make himself content with the moment, but it was hard to be content without doing something.
He smirked at her comment about fun and was about to say something a little on the fuck boy side but he wondered if he should just keep his mouht shut and let the fireworks do their magic. Nat had this overwhelming aura of secruity around her- like a blanket of silence and comfort. He didn't want to ruin it.
He let out a long breath of admiration along with Nat, and the girl started leaning on him. Ne noticed long before she did and at first he was surpised, but then he found himself smiling. His eyes went from her to the fireworks and then to her again. Both were pretty in their own way.
It was when he felt the light brush of her ears against his shoulder and then heard her sudden jump that he chuckled. Her face was burning up and he looked up at her, green eyes meeting hers. She attempted to waddle backwards, but the fireworks weren't over yet.
He reached out after her, his fingers finding hers again. "Wait..." He paused, not sure where to take this. "Stay." Yeah, he probably still had it.

She's been in one relationship. One, that spanned years of unrequited crushing and then something more until she realised there really hadn't been anything more than friends. The entire concept of falling in love again scared Natalie, simply because she wasn't sure if she was capable of that again.
Natalie was pretty sure she didn't like like Julius on the account of Julius being Julius. The man just reminded her too much of him. Black hair and all. The resemblance was kind of uncanny. Nice as he was being, she couldn't do it. Couldn't lead him on with feelings that she knew she didn't truly have.
Her fingers tensed when he reached for her hand, and Natalie felt herself instinctively pulling away. She wasn't some sucker, going to be pulled in by sweet words. No matter how she looked at it, Natalie didn't have reason to stay. "I shouldn't," she said, looking resolute. She pulled her hand away before they could start getting sweaty and all. They were quickly descending into an awkward zone.
People milled between them and Nat used the moment's distraction to pull herself away from all of this. She kept herself moving, moving out of here.

Nat drifted further away, the river of people washing her towards shore, towards the one place without many people towards a quiet place away from him. She had already started to fade away and had jumped away from his attempt to hold her hand. That was alright, he supposed. Love had never really happened, but Julius never did give up on girls he thought were pretty. His last relationship had been a brief three months ago and he had almost gotten his face ripped off by nails with black nail polish on.
He somehow thought Nat would do the same. So maybe the crowd separating them was a good thing, but then he thought about what she said, her defiance that she had not been escaping home. He shook his head, disappointed at her words, and then turned to look back at her, green eyes smiling behind the glasses he wore.
"And I thought you knew how to have fun!" he hollered, shouting over to her side. His smile prevailed even as his lifted a hand to wave at her, a single gesture to signal their goodbye but also a smile to dare to say that they'd meet again.
