THEY HAD MET THIS MORNING in an awkward encounter, with Bunny bumping right into the young man's side. And although she was extremely shy at first, apologizing constantly, the two quickly became friends. The two had bonded over their likeness in being Coordinators and their love of pokémon and contests. But it wasn't long until the boy — Kristmar was his name — had to go due to a previous arrangement. So they agreed to meet at sunset later that day on the beach, prepared to battle.
The sun was dipping down the horizon, painting the sea in hues of golds, pinks, and purples. The waves splashed in a muted sort of loud, a way that overpowered every other noise around them but was surprisingly calm and serene. Bunny's toes were sunk into the soft sand, her Dratini, Diana, by her side. Kristmar was a good thirty or so paces away, enough room for the battle to ensue. The water lapped up and covered their ankles for a few moments before dipping back away from land. Bunny was sure to note that the water was close enough to use for her advantage.
They had agreed to the terms of battle when they met. Bunny was to go first, so she stood stiffly as she thought of all her possible strategies and Kristmar finished preparing. Once he was ready, she started the fight.
Diana slithered up and away from her trainer's feet, delighted in the feeling of the water against her smooth skin. The opposing trainer and his pokémon were a ways away, plenty of room for her to dodge physical attacks should the time come. But now the battle was beginning, and the first thing she was commanded to do was show her opponent just how strong she was!
Determination burned in her eyes as she leered at her opponent. Hopefully, it got the point. She was going to win this!
[attr="class","textbby"]Alright so it wasn't exactly a date... but it totally could've passed as one. There was undeniably something romantic in meeting up with a girl in the later hours of the afternoon at the beach, just at that time during the day when the sun began to sink into the horizon and cast a saturated hue over everything. It enchanced the richness behind every colour, giving them extra vividness, as dusk prepared to settle. It really was... a picturesque setting, even for a battle for someone he'd only met for a couple of hours prior to this time of the day.[break][break]
There was still a slight nervousness as to whether the girl - Bunny Beckett - was even going to appear; she'd had to go tend to her affairs and he'd had to go check up on his pokémon at the infirmary but they'd agreed to meet at this time, at the festival, for a friendly battle. He didn't know the girl enough to be certain if she'd make a show or not but... she'd came off as a trustworthy type. Peppy and amiable, the kind that wouldn't leave you hanging, uou know? Kristmar had been the first there and shuffled around, unsure, as passersby glanced in the direction of the long-haired male who dawdled alone in the sand with a small dragon pokémon at his feet. [break][break] Thankfully for him though, the cute brunette made a show and he was allowed to breathe a slight sigh of relief. However, he didn't voice how long the girl had kept him waiting; it'd be simply rude of him to do so. So, instead, he greeted her with a soft smile and a show of his hands. [break][break] "Glad you could make it in the end," he said, a gentle smile bowing his pink lips. His sentret that'd been waiting with him toddled forward, readying himself for battle with a defense curl. "You can... y'know, go first. I don't mind." Because... ladies first and whatnot. Chivalry wasn't entirely dead and it didn't hurt to give a slight show of it in a simple battle. Kristmar pushed the bangs that escaped his loose bun from his eyes, allowing himself to get a good view of the younger girl, and his smile widened a little further.
SHE HAD TO ADMIT, Kristmar was pretty, well, pretty. That was one of the reasons she had been so flustered when they bumped into each other. But regardless, she got over this nervousness quickly as the two discussed their to-be journeys as Coordinators and the like. However his smile did have a certain softness, a certain heartfelt practice that it made her blush — but only a little.
The thought of a battle made her blood rush, her mind focus. Bunny was always the daydreaming type, easily lost in her musings, but battles and contests clears up the sometimes-fogginess of her brain. It was her time to shine, her time in the spotlight, and that was enough to make her gleam brighter than a Sun Stone.
The atmosphere was deliciously picturesque. It made her Coordinating heart flicker in content. If only she had a camera, or a friend with one.... Maybe somebody in the growing crowd around them wouldn't mind sharing their shots with her? She could only hope.
Bunny moved her eyes away from Kristmar's charming smile and to his Sentret. The normal-type pokémon was curling up defensively, averting her eyes from Diana's. Rather than her defenses falling, they rose.
She was disappointed her leer went unnoticed by the furry Sentret across the field. But no matter, she would still prove her strength! Diana's trainer demanded action, and she followed accordingly. A beam of ice shot out of her mouth and straight towards the Sentret, and before anyone could react, Diana shot forward and to another position, aiming and shooting once more in an attempt to surprise the opponent.
[attr="class","textbby"]Honestly, it didn't surprise him that a small crowd was already beginning to grow. This was, after all, a festival and the participants sought to be entertained; who could blame them for such a simple desire? If Kristmar himself weren't battling, he'd also be meandering between the various battles that were randomly appearing throughout the beach, the natural result of trainers of all likes and preferences gathering in a single spot. If it was a show they were looking for, between two coordinators they could surely entertain them for long enough. The limelight was, in the end, what Kristmar's team was due to bask in. [break][break] I-Ice beam though? How many fucking people had ice beam? With this dratini, that definitely made three pokémon that he'd encountered that possessed such a powerful ice attack. Before he leapt into action, Kris allowed himself to breathe a small breath of relief; at least he hadn't gone with Deimos as his opening pokémon. The poor thing wouldn't have stood a chance. [break][break] "Evade her attack with quick attack," he instructed, "and then tackle her when you get close enough, Rey!" They weren't the most showy moves around and paled in comparison to the other pokémon's gelid attack but they served their purpose, at least. He'd let the dratini have her spotlight for now. Just up until he was able to snatch it from her with pokémon with a more appealing moveset. [break][break] As soon as the lithe dragon type commenced her attack, Reyner sprung into action. Twisting with a certain limberness, he circumvented the first round of the dratini's attack with ease. The sand, serving as a thick and sluggish terrain for a pokémon like him to traverse on, slowed his movements substantially. Ah... Kristmar hadn't taken this into consideration. But it didn't appear to deter his sentret any, who ploughed through the sand at a breakneck speed regardless. [break][break] The second beam, however, Reyner was simply unable to dodge, being at such a close distance. The artic attack pushed him back but the squirrel rolled and recovered, knowing better than to remain on the ground for too long. Rey shook the small frozen crystals that clung to his pelt and continued his quick attack that was followed up with a tackle while he was still within range.

REYNER DODGED ICE BEAM![break] REYNER USED QUICK ATTACK![break] REYNER WAS HIT BY ICE BEAM![break] REYNER USED TACKLE!
THE BATTLE HAD BEGUN and Bunny felt a rush of excitement. The crowd was chattering and cheering, some oo-ing and ahh-ing, as the waves made muted crashing sounds against the sand. Her heart felt like it was bursting with as many hues as the sunset, and her body and mind seemed to work together in unison without any forethought. She was, essentially, "in the zone" and she had never felt any more alive.
Diana's first Ice Beam didn't hit, which earned a few whistles from the crowd. But Bunny didn't mind. The second one is what really counted, smacking straight into the Sentret just like she had planned. Kristmar called out to his pokémon, and then Reyner closed the large gap between him and Diana with a quick attack that Bunny couldn't follow if she tried. Immediately afterwards the pokémon followed up with a tackle, whamming into Diana with brute force. But this could work in her favor, too.
"Diana, use Thunder Wave!" she demanded, watching as Diana delivered. "Once he's paralyzed, use Wrap!"
Reynor hit her suddenly, so quickly she couldn't even register it until it had already happened. It made her dizzy, but only for a moment. Diana hear her trainer's voice and it pulled her thoughts together again. A thunder wave rushed out of her body and towards the Sentret, and once she was sure it was affected or otherwise, Diana rushed forward and wrapped her body around it tightly.
diana was hit by tackle! diana used thunder wave! diana used wrap!
[attr="class","textbby"]There was nothing the sentret could do, being at such close range, to avoid the thunder wave sent his way. He felt the electricity - weak but strong enough to be irritating - seep into his body and make his muscles seize up at the foreign current. His trainer frowned in slight concern as he saw the sentret's movements become more stiff and sluggish as an effect of the paralysis that'd been inflicted on him. He tutted quietly and didn't even motion for Reyner to avoid the lithe, snakelike body that came to wrap around him with a vicelike grip as it would've been meaningless. [break][break] "Another defense curl, Rey," he instructed and watched the squirrel pokémon do his best to take the edge of the attack off by curling in on himself, tensing his body, to improve his defense. "Once she's done, scratch her before she gets too far!" [break][break] Between the lasting effects of the wrap and his paralysis, Reyner struggled to keep his body moving at a decent speed. The sand they were battling on wasn't helping at all either, the terrain just made his hindered movements even slower. Tendrils of electricity flashed over his body here and there, making Reyner wince as his attack was put at risk but, with a low grunt, he managed to push through it and charged for the dratini once again.
IT WAS NO SURPRISE to her that Diana's moves hit with stunning accuracy, for the most part. They were now in close range, and the Dratini's snake-like body maneuvered easily on the sand. And now that the Sentret was paralyzed, it would only get easier.
Reyner used Defense Curl as Diana's body twined around his. "Keep using Wrap," Bunny said, determined as Diana's body gripped tighter and tighter around the normal-type pokémon's body. It could have used multiple attacks on the Dratini that she couldn't have possibly dodged, but Kristmar had elected for this instead. Which Bunny supposed was also smart, but she would've acted differently.
She watched closely as the Sentret kept curling and curling... until the time was right.
"Now!" bunny shouted, pointing at the two pokémon, "Release!"
But as soon as Diana let go of Reyner, the Sentret dashed forward and slashed her pokémon's skin. But this was alright with her, a minor sacrifice. "Ice Beam!"
Diana's body tightened around Reyner until her slender body began to ache, but she still waited, and waited, and waited. And then, once her trainer said so, the Dratini detached herself and dashed backwards through the sand a little. But she wasn't fast enough, and the Sentret's claws grazed her skin. But this was perfect! Just as Reyner finished her attack, Diana unleashed a beam of ice right at the opposing pokémon!
diana used wrap! diana released reynor! diana was hit by scratch! diana used ice beam!
[attr="class","textbby"]Kristmar could tell that his sentret had lost this round once he'd gotten paralysed. It wasn't helping that for some reason the dratini wasn't taking much damage despite being hit multiple times by now. The dragon's ice beams were decimating his poor sentret and there was nothing he could do about it... except stall for time, try to tire it a little, before he sent out his next pokémon. His sentret's temper was beginning to peak now his energy was flagging and it spurred him on enough to stagger to his feet after receiving both of the dratini's attacks. His tail swished with vigor, visibly angered, but he was almost too weak to keep himself upright and tottered from side to side, being imbalanced by his own tail. [break][break] "It's alright, Reyner," he murmured quietly to his vexed sentret whose paralysis made him twitch. "Go after her with scratch. Scratch her twice and scratch her good." [break][break] At least, that was the plan. Reyner snarled as he got down on all fours again and sped towards the dragon with an uneven gait. His steps over the sand were jagged and clumsy as the numbness in his limbs tried to claim him. Kristmar nibbled his lower lip in concern for his pokémon, uncaring that his display in his first round would probably come off as rather lackluster to the crowd. His sentret, a common normal type with a common moveset, paled in comparison against a dratini, a rare and coveted dragon type with a powerful ice attack that always caught the crowd's attention. But it was just the first round. He'd have a chance to redeem himself. [break][break] "Just a little more, Rey!" Kris urged the squirrel, watching as he was able to get close enough to the dratini to land a possible attack. But then pain contorted the creature's furious expression and his body seized up as a spasm of electricity coursed through it, immobilizing him and rendering him incapable of continuing his attack. Kris' hand quietly went to his next pokéball attached to his belt, knowing that this one was lost.
REYNER WAS HIT BY WRAP![break] REYNER WAS HIT BY ICE BEAM![break] REYNER USED SCRATCH![break] REYNER IS PARALYSED AND UNABLE TO MOVE[break] REYNER WAS HURT BY WRAP!
BUNNY WAS CERTAIN THAT this was it, she was going to win this round. Pride welted in her chest as she looked at Diana, her body sleek and her eyes focused and determined. Their journey had just started, but Bunny could practically see the amazing, beautiful Dragonair radiating from her pokémon's skin. Already the Dratini was proving herself in battle, and Bunny couldn't wait to put her in the real action of a Pokémon Contest.
Kristmar's Sentret was really battling now, and Bunny couldn't help but feel respect for it. There was nothing she thought was more brave than to face your opponent boldly, despite the knowledge that you were going to lose. In a way, she felt like Diana also felt this emotion, as the Dratini didn't budge as Reyner launched forward and sunk her claws into Diana's body. The attack was harsh — Bunny would even call it a critical hit! It surprised her, in all honesty, but beneath how impressed she was, she was secretly quite relieved that the pokémon was too immobilized by paralysis to land a second attack.
Diana was weary now, her body stiff with effort. So Bunny said, with a certain finality in her tone, "One last Ice Beam!"
The scratch landed with a impressive accuracy, claws digging into Diana's skin and leaving marks. The Dratini squeaked a little in pain, finding this particular attack much more effective than those previous. Suddenly Diana was much more tired, much less able to move. But as Reyner struggled with paralysis, Diana unleashed one more beam of ice as a finishing blow.
diana was hit by scratch! critical hit! diana used ice beam!
[attr="class","textbby"]Hardly able to move, the sentret was at the ice beam's mercy when the dratini fired it. He was able to take a little consolation in how his last scratch had got the dratini pretty well despite being too paralysed to prolong his attack. It was enough to entice a little smirk out of the sentret and readily accept this defeat. One day, one of his battles would end in a win for himself. Today was simply not that day. [break][break] "That's a very nice dratini you have, Bunny," Kristmar admitted as he called his fainted sentret back, returning the limp pokémon to his ball for a well deserved rest. The blonde flicked his heavy bands from his bright carmine eyes so he could get a better look at the blue-eyed brunette across of the sand. "Did you teach her that move? I definitely wasn't... expecting it." [break][break] But at least now, thanks to Reyner's valiant effort, the dragon was visibly tiring. Another well-placed move or two would do the trick, as well as using this opportunity to throw a decent opponent into the fray. [break][break] "Adelaide, you're up," he called out his ralts from her pokéball, watching with a passing amusement as she sank into the sand and stared down at it with slight wonder. It felt so... bizarre to her young feet. She trod on it a few times in succession, getting used to the thick terrain, as she juggled her weight from foot to foot. Kris flapped a hand at her with fond exasperation. "Alright, alright, enough of that, Addy."We... have a crowd this time, Kristmar."Yes, I know so..."Sorry, Kristmar."Limber up about the field with a double team aaaand... a confusion this time." [break][break] Adelaide paused however and glanced back at her trainer's choice of move. This was... a dragon. Wouldn't her fairy-type move be more apt? Kris sensed her presence in his mind and how it grew questioning; he simply shook his head and tapped his lips with a finger. There was no need to flaunt their powerful moves quite so soon if it weren't needed. The young ralts dipped her head in acknowledgement and promptly vanished before her coordinator's eyes as she began to use double team, creating an illusion of many ralts appearing around the dratini as she sped between them with swift speed. Then, when she was ready, one of the silhouettes came more into focus as she slowed down enough to concentrate on her psychic attack, aiming to pummel the dratini with disorientating waves of energy.
SHE FELT A SURGE OF PRIDE as the Sentret fainted to Diana's final blow. She was so proud of her pokémon that she could scream, and as the Dratini looked back at her Bunny couldn't help but grin. Kristmar sent out his second pokémon, a Ralts, and Bunny gasped audibly.
"Oh my gosh!" She said to Kristmar, absolutely beaming, "You have a Ralts! She's lovely!"
But then she reverted back to battle mode, noting that Kristmar seemed to be... talking to himself?
It took a couple moments, but Bunny realized that the tiny Ralts (Adelaide, she thought she heard her name was) and her trainer were probably communicating telepathically. That was amazing! But could be used as an advantage in battle. She tried to keep it from making her unfocused and starry-eyed.
Bunny bit her lip as Diana became confused. This could be her last move. Bunny took a second to think the situation through, and then commanded, "Try to use wrap, Diana!"
To be honest, she was lucky that Kristmar didn't blast her Dratini away with a fairy-type move. Bunny assumed that he used confusion so as to not cause "overkill" during that battle, and she respected that.
Bunny watched as Diana attempted to shoot towards Adelaide to squeeze her in a wrap, but only manged to inch forward and coil up on herself so tightly that she overdid herself. Bunny nodded quietly as Diana fainted, hurting herself from confusion. Bunny then jogged forward, picked her pokémon up, and then laid her down on the sand beside her feet to keep her out of the battlezone. "Nice move!" She shouted to Kristmar, throwing a pokéball into the air. "But you just got lucky!"
A Dedenne appeared where Diana once stood, riled up and ready to go like some Energizer Plusle. Tiny little electric shocks radiated over her body, and the pokémon striked a pose like a true contest pokémon, fire in her eyes. Bunny smirked.
She tried, she really did, but the world was spinning and suddenly she couldn't tell which way was up and which way was down. Diana could vaguely determined the green-ish sort of figure of Adelaide and tried to move towards it. When she thought she was close enough, Diana tried to wrap her body around the pokémon but only ended up hurting herself in confusion! With one final squeak, Diana blacked out as her trainer's comforting arms picked her up and placed her on the warm sand away from the battle.
diana leveled up (+2)! diana became confused! diana hurt herself in confusion! diana fainted!
Dolly had heard the battle since it started from her pokéball, and she had been writhing inside it with excitement. She wanted to fight, and she wanted to fight now!
Finally, it was her time to shine! The sweet-and-salty air of the beach filled her senses and she shouted in delight, letting the electricity that had built up in her fur flicker over her body while making a pose. She was going to battle with style!
With the command of her trainer in her ears, Dolly pointed at the Ralts with a wink, sending a thunder shock her way as if it was nothing! Yeah, she was pretty great.
dolly was sent out to battle! dolly is excited! dolly used thunder shock!
[attr="class","textbby"]That he'd just gotten lucky with that last move? Kristmar gave an amused huff and a slanted smirk sliding across his lips as he folded his arms across his chest. He had to admire her cockiness though and her resolve to take her dratini's defeat in her stride, but he would still have to prove that little comment of hers wrong. His ralts was nothing to sniff at. Not everything was down to something as capricious as luck at times. [break][break] "Another confusion, Addy," he told her as she brushed away the sparks of electricity jumping across her skin, "and then a dazzling gleam." If the... what was that pokémon even? Kristmar slipped his pokédex from his pocket and scanned it quickly. Dedenne. The antenna pokémon. Electric and fairy type. Oh... Kris wouldn't have guessed that second typing at a glance but it didn't matter. His moves wouldn't be affected by that dual typing. So, anyway, if this hamster(?) pokémon wanted to get flashy, Kristmar had no qualms against rising to its game. [break][break] Again, Adelaide's horns thrummed with a low, vibrating noise as they expelled jumbled psychic waves that aimed to confound the enemy and cause them harm. As she did, she ventured deftly closer to the dedenne and subtly began to increase the intensity of her attack before ceasing it all of a sudden. By now her body was covered in a thin, shimmering sheen as she'd slowly been preparing for her next attack so that she'd hopefully not waste any time. [break][break] Mimicking the dedenne's bold gesture, Adelaide threw out one of her arms to motion towards the dual type, letting a bit of her confidence shine through. She used her hand's momentum to swing herself around in a simple pirouette, her body's glowing intensifying until it climaxed with a large blast of glittering energy, making even her trainer squint at the sudden pulse of unblemished light. His ralts was steadily getting the hang of this move, he noticed with a small swell of pride. Hopefully by the time the first contest of this season rolled around, she'd be ready.

IF YOU FIND ANOTHER GALAXY
BUNNY KNEW SHE SOUNDED COCKY, but she didn't really mind. She was pumped up, ready for this battle to really begin! Kristmar had Adelaide throw another confusion their way, and Dolly began to wobble, but only slightly. Bunny figured that since she was so excited the poor thing's head was probably already swimming, so she shouldn't hurt herself too badly. Hopefully.
And then, just after the Ralts was hammered with a Thunder Shock, she began to twirl and gleam brightly like a star in the night sky. She became so brilliantly bright that Bunny had to shield her eyes, and to her dismay, Dolly seemed to become slightly more confused after the move hit.
"Dolly, use a tackle to get close!" she commanded, watching as her pokémon dashed forward at a slight angle. Just as she was nearing Adelaide, the Dedenne fumbled and rolled a little in the sand, hurting herself slightly. But it was close enough. "Use Thunder Shock again!" Bunny hoped that, since Dolly was closer, it would be easier for the attack to hit than if she was farther away and therefore more likely to hit herself.
She'd have to ask Kristmar about that move later, though. She could definitely use it in a contest.
The world was spinning, but when wasn't it? It got kinda hard to focus on that Ralts, though. And then everything was white and bright and her head began to hurt and — But wait! Dolly could hear her trainer! She wanted her to tackle! So that's just what she did; dashing through the sand, admittedly slower than she would have liked due to the terrain, the Dedenne began to topple as the surface began startlingly close to her right side and suddenly she was rolling.
But that didn't stop her from pointing again at where the swirling mass of white and green and red and whatever other colors the pokémon was, unleashing another shockwave of sorts all around her body and towards anything near her.
dolly is confused! dolly was hit by dazzling gleam! dolly hurt herself in confusion! dolly used thunder shock!
[attr="class","textbby"]Kristmar saw the dedenne prepare her attack after shambling about, apparently confused which was a real bonus. He didn't like to depend on the possible secondary effect of Adelaide's confusion attack so, whenever it did take effect, it always was a pleasant surprise. It gave him a little bit of extra confidence in this battle. [break][break] "Adelaide, dodge that with double team!" He urged her, seeing the crackling tendrils of electricity propelling in her direction. As commanded, the ralts vanished into a crowd of identical silhouettes, all with a certain translucid quality to them. Hopefully, with the dedenne now confused, this move would be even more advantageous to them now. "And then use another--"Wait, Kristmar, Adelaide interrupted him quietly, her voice was very hesitant, not wanting to come off as disrespectful. The blonde's eyebrows knitted together gently, giving the mass of flitting figures a questioning look. [break][break] "What is it, Adelaide?"I, um... I-I have something else I want to try. A skeptical shadow shaded the young male's brow but... alright. He gave her a nod and a little noise in his throat. Now wasn't the optimal time for improvisation but this was no regulated battle or show; they were allowed to experiment a little for the sake of improving. Okay, Kristmar. Just watch. I've been practicing. [break][break] Her double team began to slow down, rendering her real form more visible for now, while she focused on her new attack. She didn't want to disappoint her trainer after getting his permission to act on her own. Adelaide closed her eyes and sang a haunting melodic peal, one that was wraught with a deeply engrained melancholy. Kristmar blinked and swallowed, unsure whether he should be proud or... sad that such a miserably beautiful sound could come from his pokémon.
SUDDENLY THE BATTLE WASN'T going in her favor. Biting her lip, Bunny watched as Adelaide as she performed another Double Team, avoiding Dolly's Thunder Shock and causing the Dedenne to physically spin in the sand in her confusion. This was bad. If she Dolly couldn't somehow snap out of it, then....
"Thunder Shock, again!" But Dolly didn't seem to hear, or if she did, she didn't respond with anything besides flopping onto the sand and hurting herself again. Bunny frowned. The more her pokémon hurt herself, the easier it would be for Kristmar to win this round.
Bunny nearly called an attack while the opponent and his pokémon seemed to communicate with each other, but she decided to wait it out. Dolly didn't look like she would be capable of hitting Adelaide yet. But she began to regret not taking action, as the Ralts began to sing (screech?) a hauntingly beautiful and terrifying song. Dolly rolled backwards at the impact, covering her ears.
And then Bunny realized that she must have snapped out of confusion!
While Adelaide was still singing, Bunny yelled, "Thunder Shock!" Maybe this time it would actually hit, but the Ralts' evasiveness was pretty high.... She bit her lip again, hoping desperately that Dolly would hit her mark.
Everything was getting worse. It was harder and harder to focus, the world was spinning, the Ralts was spinning, she was spinning. Would it ever stop? The garbled noise of Bunny's command hit her ears, but she didn't understand. The sand suddenly met her face with a deaf "thump" that made her teeth hurt. And then the most god awful noise sounded around her, feeling like it was hitting her sides and chest and heard and everything and she tried to roll away but it wouldn't stop. Dolly covered her ears and meweled in pain, giving a glance back to her trainer.
But she wasn't spinning.
Bunny seemed to be on the same wavelength as her, since the second Dolly released her ears she heard a command from her trainer and released a devastating thunder shock at her opponent!
dolly hurt herself in confusion! dolly was hit by disarming voice! dolly snapped out of confusion! dolly used thunder shock!
