If Zara wanted to get anywhere, she had to start training. It wasn't easy, since Rava was only a little baby level 5 horsea, but she had to start somewhere. It was definitely different having to slow down and take each route as it came, since all the girl wanted to do was rush through everything, but the grass was intimidating and Rava would be the one to defend her if anything showed up wanting to fight. She had to slow down and train.
"It's hard," she complained, looking at Rava, who offered her no sympathy; the seahorse stared back blankly before turning to face the grass ahead of them. Even she knew what they had to do. Chances were, the tiny water pokemon was just as interested in getting stronger as Zara was. She knew what her potential was.
With a deep breath and a push forward, Zara took a few steps into the grass, Rava following behind. There were scuffles all around them, and so far nothing had popped out, but she knew it wouldn't be long before they met... well, something.
she pecked at the ground despite her lack of hunger. the taillow had enjoyed a rather large breakfast this morning, after all. which had consisted of a wriggling specimen of crunchy delight. it was a rare treat - and a rather large one as well. at the moment, the bird merely craved something sweet. it would sate her need and fill her up enough to satisfy her for the rest of the day.
"tailllow?" she chirped, continuing her search for a berry.
The first pokemon they ran into was a bird. A tiny, cute little blue and red bird - a Taillow! Zara was relieved that she actuallyknew what type of pokemon it was. There were so many now that were coming in from other regions and she had zero clue what any of them were. This was a taste of home.
"Sweet. Rava," she said, looking down at the horsea with a smile, "smokescreen, and water gun!"
The little horsea looked more than nervous, but fired off a smokescreen anyway, hopefully engulfing the little bird in a cloud of black that would make it harder to see out of. Directly after that, a spout of water flew straight at the bird. Zara was hopeful that they could catch it by surprise, since it seemed pretty intent on pecking around for berries. The aqua grunt made a mental note to herself - find berries as soon as possible. That was one thing her father had always taught her. Your pokemon need to at least like you if you want to get anywhere.

suddenly she was surrounded by a thick smog. her vision was clouded by darkness, and she couldn't predict the water gun that had been launched in her general direction. bewilderment was quickly replaced by flashes of agony and lingering pain. flapping her wings furiously as she struggled to go airborne, she squinted her eyes, her confusion causing her not to see the sense of simply flying out of the hazy fog.
"tai?"
the wild taillow was hit my smokescreen! the wild taillow's accuracy has fell! the wild taillow was hit by water gun! the wild taillow cannot escape the smokescreen!
It seemed like the water gun had hit, and Zara's right hand clenched into a fist in excitement. Yes! It seemed like her little strategy, simple as it was, had worked decently well. The bird definitely didn't seem weak or a level below Rava, so if it did regain itself enough to hit the seahorse, it would probably do a decent amount of damage. They had to try and take care of it before that happened.
"Alright, another water gun, and follow it up... with a bubble?" Zara called out, and Rava glanced behind her curiously because of her trainer's choice. Mostly what was going through her head was, if the bird dodges the water gun, it might run into the bubbles.... but she had no idea if that would be the case or not.
Rava did as she was told, firing off another water gun into the black smoke, which was slowly dissipating. and then shot out a bubble attack immediately after.

taillow managed to collect herself enough to fly out of the disgusting cloud, eyes still stinging from the irritable material. shaking her head, the female quickly realized that she had narrowly avoided a water gun. unfortunately, the bubble that was launched in her direction could not be avoided. knocked from the air, the flying-type was forced to scrape together the remainder of her energy and charge forward on foot, aiming to peck at the horsea.
the wild taillow dodged water gun! the wild taillow was hit by bubble! the wild taillow used peck!
All of a sudden, the Taillow was swept out of the cloud, lifting herself up, only to hit some of the stray bubbles that Rava had sent. It got itself together quite fast, and the peck attack that it sent charging at the Horsea was clearly too much of a surprise for the little water pokemon to dodge.
Rava fell backwards, looking slightly offended and hurt. With big eyes, she looked up at Zara, just to see the girl staring down at her in determination.
"Quick! Finish it off with water gun!"
Blinking out of surprise, the Horsea hurriedly got back up on her tail and aimed fast, firing off a spout of water that would hopefully finish off the little bird. Zara watched anxiously - catching a flying type this early on would be fantastic!
[ OOC ]YOYO! (injured) hit by peck, used water gun

the taillow screeched in response to being struck by the water gun, her body being violently flung backward until she landed roughly upon a patch of soft grasses. the bird managed to cling onto consciousness for a brief period of time, chest heaving before her eyes eventually fell shut.
"taill..."
the wild taillow was hit by water gun! the wild taillow has fainted! rava has gained a level! capture?
Zara and Rava watched impatiently as the water gun flew at the bird - and it hit! As the Taillow fell down onto the grass, Zara bit her lip, mentally crossing her fingers that it would fall quiet so she could catch it without any troubles; and it didn't seem to be able to hold on.
Hurriedly, she fished a pokeball out of the striped bag on her back, tossing it lightly at the little flying type and then watching curiously as the ball shook back and forth. It seemed like they always had some fight in them.
Her dark brown eyes glanced down at Rava. The little Horsea was staring intently at the capture.
"Good job, Rava," Zara said with a smile, "you won your first battle!"
As the little water type's eyes lit up in excitement, Zara went to retrieve the pokeball, which had finally stopped moving. Rava had beaten her first wild pokemon, and Zara had caught her first pokemon. It was a day of firsts - but she didn't want to stop just yet.
Crouching down, Zara pulled a potion from her pack and gave a light spritz to the Horsea, who was brought back to a somewhat-healthy state. If they kept going at this rate, she would definitely have to restock at the next mart.
she yawned noisily, her eyes fluttering open and shut. the female had left the city in exchange for this. it was quiet, there was plenty of food to be had, and it reawakened her natural predatory instincts. this was how any proper canine should live. stretching out her legs, she curled onto a particularly comfortable patch of grass that was situated beside the pathway of route 101.
"grrrr."
her lips twitched slightly as she proceeded to dream, envisioning juicy prey.
a wild houndour appeared! the wild houndour appears to be sleeping!
As the two continued along route 1, both kept their eyes open for any more wild pokemon. The success of their first battle seemed to instill new-found confidence, and Zara wanted nothing more than to battle more so that Rava could get stronger, and she could improve her team. There was something ridiculously satisfying about it. She felt successful.
It wasn't long before they stumbled across the sleeping Houndour. Despite wanting to find another wild pokemon, both the trainer and the Horsea exchanged worried looks. Even though it was just a puppy, the dog was scary-looking, even asleep. But they had a type advantage.
"Okay, Rava," Zara whispered, crouching down, "surprise it with two water guns. Water beats fire," she added with a reassuring smile. The Horsea looked unsure, but bounced forward anyway, waiting a few moments before spouting off a fast water gun; and immediately after, another torrent of water followed.
she was absolutely knocked out. in a comical sense and in a literal sense. the houndour's sleep was so deep that she failed to react to the water gun that flung her back. the second caused her to dig deeper into unconsciousness, her eyes fluttering open to reveal a dazed look as her muzzle parted and she released a low whine.
the wild houndour was hit by water gun! the wild houndour is still asleep! the wild houndour was hit by water gun! the wild houndour has fainted! rava gained a level! capture or move on?
The dog was caught off-guard, thankfully. It meant that The Horsea didn't have to deal with any following repercussions. Even if the fire puppy only knew fire attacks, seeing that thing come after you would be... scary, at least, for a tiny little seahorse.
Zara cheered. They were on a roll. Against her better judgment, she threw a pokeball at the fainted Houndour, watching excitedly as it rolled and then came to a stop. It might not have been a water-type, but it would be good to have something to combat all the grass types she would eventually see; even if Rose technically counted for that...
She pushed the thought out of her mind. Catching pokemon was far too fun. But having four so early in her journey felt reckless. It wouldn't be easy trying to level them all equally, but that was the least of her worries at the moment. Rava was looking at her expectantly.
"Yes! You did such a great job. How about one more?" Zara gave the little water type a wide smile, and Rava responded happily, clearly becoming more confident in her abilities already.
"Sweet! We should be in Oldale by then," Zara said with a satisfied sigh, peering into the distance, where she thought she could see houses beyond the trees.
croagunk yawned tiredly, shifting himself and stretching as he soothed away the stiffness of his joints. he was tired, and desired a place to rest. it would do him some good, seeing as the sun was close to going down. afternoon had been hot, and he sought out a moist place to settle in.
"cro."
he trotted down the path at a leisurely place, wholly apathetic toward the human's presence.
As they continued, coming closer and closer to Oldale, a new pokemon suddenly arrived. It looked like some sort of walking toad, but Zara couldn't be sure; all she did know was that it was unfamiliar to her. It seemed like some sort of poison type, but she didn't know anything beyond that. She couldn't help but be surprised that the creature was apparently intent on simply walking past.
"Catch it with smokescreen, Rava," Zara decided, glancing down at the Horsea with a smile. Confidently, the little water type shot off a cloud of smokey ink towards the Croagunk, making it obvious that they wanted to fight.
"Now bubble!" After the initial smokescreen, Rava sent a bubble attack into the cloud, hopefully hitting the toad.
