He flattened grass beneath his boots where he walked, adjusting the loose scarf looped around his neck to ward against the morning's cool. He was most definitely not a morning person. His vision was still bleary. He rubbed his tired eyes, grumbling under his breath as he backtracked towards Route 101.
Benji faulted himself from his carelessness - he wasn't sure when it must have happened, but he had misplaced his keys. He had been talking with Carmella and hadn't noticed when they slipped out of his pockets. There was no one else to blame but himself. He did, however, blame Arthur for causing him to lose sleep at night. Who knew the Hoothoot could get so noisy? Even in his Pokeball, he wouldn't stop rolling around and creating a ruckus.
His eyes were red from sleep deprivation, but Benji kept searching. He kept his eyes on the ground, looking for anything shiny. What he would give to have Carmella's Murkrow now... they'd be able to spot a shiny object without difficulty.
Who knew that on her first couple days on the road, Zara would find a set of keys dropped by some hapless traveler? Well, Rava had found them. The little Horsea was bouncing along next to her, still looking a bit nervous and intimidated by the tall grass and prospective wild pokemon everywhere, but that would improve with time.
The aqua grunt studied the keys as she went, looking for any identifying factors, but it didn't seem like there was ID on them at all. She figured when she reached Oldale, she would just hand them in at the shelf at the pokemon center there. In the mean time, she trekked through the cold morning air like it was nothing, wearing little more than a loose shirt and shorts.
There was another trainer on a bit of a collision path with her, apparently not looking when he was going and instead staring at the ground. Zara tilted her head curiously; was he looking for keys? And then, at the same time... god, he looks familiar.
Wait.
"Seriously?" she whispered under her breath, but as they got closer to each other, it was confirmed. Benji.
"No way," she said louder, breaking into a laugh, "Benji! Right? The one who-" Zara's mouth kept moving, most likely revealing some ridiculously personal and intimate information, but at the same point seemed to startle a flock of Taillows nearby which flew into the air in a cacophony loud enough to block out her words.
Her arm lifted into the air, she waved at him, keys jangling in her fingers as she did so.
"How's it been, man?"
[ OOC ]BENJI FAIRFAX hope it's cool that she has his keys? :x

He could have sworn this was the same path he walked by on last night. Granted, it looked plenty different in the day, but there was no doubt about the winding path of Route 101 that snaked through tall grass and was bordered with tall ledges too high to be scaled. He kept his eyes peeled, hoping that the metal keys would catch some of the sun and shine right about now.
That was when he heard one loud voice. Not just any voice - one calling his name. He knew there had been the possibility of fans lying in wait for him, and was prepared to whip out a mask to cover his face, but there was only one voice. And it sounded so familiar. Benji narrowed his eyes at the tanned girl in the distance, shouting about something--
He had never been so thankful for that flock of Taillow. He could feel his skin feeling hot and bothered, but played it off with a calm look. What was that girl's name? Benji was by no means a casanova with a record to boast of, but he hadn't considered her name to be one he would be needing anytime in the future.
It finally clicked in his head. "Zara," he greeted, "It's nice to see you again. I've been... well." He hadn't meant that entirely. His eyes were on the keys in her fingers. "I believe you have something of mine," he gestured to the item in her possession, one arm looped tightly around his Gible egg.
Even if Benji didn't look overly happy to see her, Zara would be the last to notice. The way she was acting was as if they had seen each other just yesterday. She watched him curiously, and her smile only disappeared when she realised he was distracted.
"Oh," she exclaimed, glancing between his steady gaze and the keys in her hand, "are these yours? I found them, like, ten minutes ago."
"Good thing I recognized ya," she laughed, lips broken into a wide smile again. At least the girl was welcoming, even if her company was the last thing Benji wanted, early in the morning. To her, this was just meeting up with an old friend, even if... they'd known each other for barely the better part of a day.
"What are you doing way down here on 101?" she finally asked, noting the egg under his arm, "Training?"

Things were about to get awkward really fast. Benji didn't know what to say to her. They weren't exactly on close terms, and one night spent together hadn't meant anything. He was less model, more researcher now anyway. Passion, if any, was most strictly related to his research.
"Yeah, they're mine." The keyring was a gimmicky, kitsch souvenir item from Fortree City. It was the only he could get hold of at that time, and Benji had never bothered to change it since. It was unmistakeable, feathers and all. "Thank you for finding them," he said - awkward as the two of them might be, she did find his keys. That deserved thanks, at any cost.
"Well, finding my keys," he explained, "I passed through here last night. I have a Hoothoot, so he's nocturnal." No training could be done in the day. Arthur would be complaining endlessly and too sleepy for any of it. He motioned towards the egg he had with him, "I'm trying to get this hatched. Professor Birch had a handful given out, thought it would respond better to interaction. No luck thus far, though."
"No problem," Zara replied with a shrug, swinging her arms now that Benji had retrieved his keys. "A Hoothoot, huh? Cool! I just caught myself a Taillow recently," she replied simply, oblivious to any sort of awkward presence that existed between the two of them. She would be content to chat and stand on route 101 until noon, but the longer she stood still, the colder she began to feel.
Her attention was drawn to the egg when Benji mentioned it, and she glanced down at it, wondering what would be hatching from it. She wasn't even sure if Benji knew himself. Hatching eggs seemed tedious; she'd never been able to understand why people bothered doing it for a living.
"Neat," she said simply, looking back up to meet Benji's eyes when he spoke to her again.
"I've been great!" she exclaimed proudly, now grinning at the other trainer. "I mean, I just started. But it's fun, anyway. Where the hell is the nearest beach? I thought this place was supposed to have a lot of water." Zara looked almost irritated, but mostly she was just impatient, uncomfortable, and at the same time wanted some open water that Rava would be able to splash around in. If Benji had gotten further, he might know, or at least point her in the right direction.

His eyes lit up at mention of a Taillow. His bird senses were tingling - Benji was more than happy to hear about the exploits of others, but only when it involved feathered friends. His mood had perked instantly, sleepy narrow eyes looking much more awake than before. "Oh, really?" he asked, his voice betraying a more chipper mood than before.
The egg in his arms jostled lightly, eliciting a noise of surprise from Benji. That hadn't happened before. He blinked at it in surprise, unsure how to react. "That's new," he remarked, shifting the egg's weight into a more comfortable position.
He didn't know if he'd use the word fun to describe his journey thus far... It had been uneventful, at best. Zara was more concerned about finding a beach area. He checked his phone. "Petalburg, apparently. It overlooks the coast and Route 105. There's a body of water connecting Slateport to Oldale north, around Route 103," he supplied helpfully.
He hadn't travelled that far out yet, but he'd done his research. You know, like a boring old man.
Zara couldn't help but notice when Benji's eyes lit up as soon as she mentioned the Taillow. She lifted her eyebrows, and then looked at surprise as Benji did when the egg jostled. It was getting closer to hatching.
"Cool," she exclaimed, looking at it in interest before Benji began to explain the nearest beach. Petalburg? She knew she was on her way there, but still had a route or two to go; at least it wasn't that far away.
"Thanks," she said with a smile, nodding to him appreciatively. "Rava's been missing," she added, glancing down at the Horsea, which only looked at her in a bored fashion. It was pretty obvious that Zara was the one who wanted it more.
"Oh yeah- did you want to meet Rose?" she asked with a smile, pulling out a little pokeball, enlarging it, and softly releasing the button. A little blue form popped out, soaring upwards before turning around to land squarely on Zara's head, tiny talons entangling in her black curls. The girl stared up at it for a moment before looking back at Benji with a grin.
"We can walk back together, if ya want? You don't need to go back this way now that you have your keys, right?"

Benji was barely paying attention to Zara's Horsea. He detected the lazy attempt of a lie. He had to wonder if it was the Horsea that was missing the water, or if it was her. In the brief evening they had spent together, he had learnt that she was very much attached to the liquid like it was her second home.
"Is that her name?" he asked, very much interested. He bobbed his head politely, very much taken to the flying type the moment it was let out of its Pokeball. He had assumed it was female by the name, but if it wasn't, hopefully Zara wouldn't point it out. The tiny swallow was a common sight in Hoenn, but nonetheless a pretty one. Their red breasts were beautiful.
He closed the distance between them, eyes affixed on the Taillow. "May I?" he asked for permission, surprisingly gentle when it came to handling birds. He couldn't hide his love for them, or the fact that he was a huge nerd. He was standing awfully close to Zara, but he hardly minded it. Like they hadn't been closer before.
Gingerly, he stretched out his hand, single finger reaching to trail through the Taillow's deep blue feathers. "She's beautiful," he exhaled, mesmerised. His eyes were dreamy, like he had seen first love.
"We can do that, yeah," he mumbled, pulling away and almost instantly switching off the any affection he might have displayed previously when handling bird Pokemon. "Thank you, again," he dipped his head slightly.
zara bonheur benji is actual birb nerd im so sorry
Zara watched Benji curiously as he stepped forward to examine her Taillow. In their short night together, she'd had no idea he was that interested in birds. But really, who brought that up in that sort of situation?
She shrugged as he asked if he could see her, and rested her hands on her hips as he gently stroked the little bird. Rose seemed mostly unfazed, not really worried about it and clearly trusting this stranger, since her trainer didn't seem to be threatened by him at all.
Especially now that she knew he was such a bird nerd.
"Sounds good," Zara replied a moment later, stifling a giggle as he tried to regain his "normal person" exterior. The normal person that wasn't a freak for birds.
"You should have told me if you had a kink," she said passively, moving to walk past him and then laughing right after. "Just kidding! So you know this route better than me, actually. Lead the way."
[ OOC ]BENJI FAIRFAX I literally bought a bird magazine at the grocery store today so I could read it at work. I can relate to Benji's bird-loving. when I'm retired i'm probably gonna like, start bird watching, and be that old lady that wanders around the park with binoculars, no lie.

He was utterly absorbed with examining Rose. She had a beautiful plumage that few would have been able to appreciate. He only drew away when he felt like he had spent an inappropriately long amount of time acquainting himself with a bird sitting on Zara's head.
It was hard to keep his cool, especially after that comment. Benji looked at the tanned girl indignantly. "I do not," he retorted, looking insulted by the insinuation. He was a perfectly decent human being, not the sort that made jokes like these. He looked huffy, even after Zara had assured him that she was kidding. "Very funny," he replied, words dripping with sarcasm. "Trust you to make jokes like that," he grumbled, folding his arms around the egg, "As I'm sure you have your own fetishes." Even the sound of the word sounded... weird on his tongue. Left an unpleasant aftertaste.
He was starting to wonder what he had seen in her to spend a night with her. "Fine," he pursed his lips, trying to get through the route as quickly as possible to make this as painless as possible.
zara bonheur omg... also feel free to keep teasing him or i can fastforward to oldale uwu
She tried hard not to snort when the word "fetishes" dropped off of his lips, like a bug had gotten stuck on his tongue and he was trying to spit it out. Instead, she looked over her shoulder at him with a knowing grin, eyebrows raised.
"You mean... you don't remember? Man, you were totally into it." Despite her best efforts, her voice cracked at the end and broke into laughter. She'd always been a shitty liar. If she'd been trying to sleep with him again, she wouldn't have been joking like this - but she wasn't exactly used to running into people again. He probably hated her already, even though that hadn't been the case the last time they'd met.
With a crooked smile, she followed him down the route, keeping up with his fast pace and returning Rava to her pokeball in favor for the little bird on her head. At least there was something Benji could like.
[ OOC ]BENJI FAIRFAX hokay, we can move to Oldale now if you like? do you wanna start it? o:

Benji's eyes narrowed, perturbed by Zara's words. He had not. He didn't recall much, to be honest, but maybe that was for the better. Zara was one of the more tolerable people he had met in life, but it didn't mean that he particularly enjoyed seeing her around any more than necessary. She was laughing again, so Benji dismissed it as a joke in poor taste, trying not to show the reddened tips of his ears.
He made the trip towards Oldale as painless as possible, strides calm as he saw the Pokemon Center coming into view. "Here," he grumbled. "There's water north this way, and to the west, the road leads to Petalburg." He still had to collect his things from his rented room at the center before he made his way elsewhere.
"Are you planning to stick around for a while? I've got things I need to pack." He jingled his keys in hand.
Oldale was... quaint. It reminded her of Littleroot town, which she had just left. Not many people seemed to live here. At least there was a Pokemon Center, which was much needed. Zara was eager to train her two new recruits, but they weren't exactly ready to go just yet.
"Water to the north?" she repeated, narrowing her eyes and peering past the trees, before following Benji's gaze to the road to the west, which led to Petalburg. A bigger town. A beach.
All she knew was that she needed route 102.
"I think... I'm gonna keep moving," she decided slowly, turning to him briefly and offering a quick smile. The girl started to jog towards the pokemon center. "I'll see you around, Benji! Good luck with your egg!"
She yelled back at him over her shoulder, waving without looking, and disappeared into the doors. Chances were she'd be out of Oldale within the next 10 minutes; at least, once she was packed up.
