It was always nice to go back to where everything started. For Sylvester, there was no exception. Stalking the partially vast steppes of Route 101, he had been searching for an abundance of pokemon, though to his dismay none had been around to show themselves to the aspiring trainer.
"At least the weather is nice today..." Sylvester noted, slinging his backpack off from his shoulder and sitting down against a tree, leaning his head back to take a moment to rest. "Though I would still rather have rain if it meant seeing some pokemon." Littleroot had been a bit of a dry spell for the trainer after catching his Ponyta and Shroomish. Though, could he really argue with it? Sylvester already had two pokemon worthy of training, and an egg that would hopefully hatch soon. What more could he ask for?

[ SETH ] A Shinx! And she was so cute, too! Seth was beyond excited to have his first Pokemon. Sure, he had seen Pokemon before, but this one was his. He couldn't wait to go out and see more Pokemon. In fact, he had just run out of Professor Birch's Pokemon Lab, heading straight for wherever wild Pokemon would be. He wasn't going to become an expert on Pokemon if he sat around doing nothing, now was he?
The over-excited teen was barely out of the building when he ran into someone--literally ran into them. He tended not to look where he was going; it led to quite a few awkward situations. Seth had been carrying his Shinx around as though she were a pet (What use was there in putting her in a pokeball if she was going to come right back out?) when the collision happened. The poor thing was ejected from his grasp as he fell, presumably making the person he had run full-steam fall with him. In a true show of mercy on Seth, the Shinx landed squarely on his chest with a startled mewl accompanied by a quiet 'oof' from Seth.
With a groan, Seth sat up, the Pokemon falling into his lap. "S-Sorry about that..." He was already blushing in embarrassment and rubbing the back of his head--something of a nervous habit.
Post by Sylvester Blackburne on Jun 26, 2015 21:47:59 GMT
'Oof!' Being knocked over before he could sit, Sylvester was at least able to reduce his fall by using his arms for support, swiftly looking towards the thing that ran into him—a boy. "Hey...watch where you're running next time, kid." Standing up and brushing himself free of any debris that clung to his clothing, Sylvester readjusted himself to sit against the tree like anticipated. "What are you in such a hurry for? It's almost as if you're a brand new trainer, or something." Then it clicked.
Observing the pokemon in his lap, Sylvester retrieved the pokedex from inside his coat and gave it a scan. 'Shinx, the flash pokemon. type: electric.'"Is that the case, or are you just genuinely in a hurry for some reason?" He pondered whether or not the boy would get up and run before answering him, observing further as he rubbed the back of his head and began to blush as if embarrassed—which he should have been, but the red hue in his face was just a little overboard. "No need to worry about running into me. You're a furball compared to what a pokemon could do to me." It may have been taken as an insult, though Sylvester was just being serious.

[ SETH ] "Sorry..." Seth felt the need to apologize again. He hadn't meant to run into the guy, he just really wanted to go see some Pokemon. "Yeah, I'm new." Any extroversion his overzealous running might have suggested was completely gone now. He could hardly even keep the man's gaze while they talked. "Just got to this region."
Eyes focused on the little machine as it spoke, Seth seemed fascinated. He gave a sound of surprise, remembering that he had one of his own in his pocket. He pulled it out and scanned his own Pokemon with it, the audio repeating exactly the same thing as the other trainer's, tone and everything. How could he have forgotten to get the data for even his own Pokemon? Idiot. Seth scolded himself internally and only looked more uncomfortable with how he must have embarrassed himself further with that. He never thought through his actions, did he? Ugh.
The Shinx stood up in Seth's lap and shook itself, presumably ridding itself of the shock from the fall. It probably thought its trainer was a full-blown idiot. The little thing gave a halfhearted yip at the stranger, tail going and shaking slightly in excitement. It appeared she was excited about meeting new things as well. "Heh. Yeah." Just a couple of furballs, weren't they? Seth gently petted his Shinx, seeming happier with the distraction.
Post by Sylvester Blackburne on Jun 26, 2015 23:23:49 GMT
"Oh, really? Where did you come from, if you don't mind me asking?" It was actually quite a surprise. Most trainers liked to stay where they originated, as it gave a sense of homeliness, but this kid must have had a sense of adventure about him. That, or his family moved and he was forced to go along with, lest he want to be left behind.
"Nice pokemon, by the way. I haven't had the chance to catch an electric type pokemon as of yet. It's definitely on my to do list, though." Shifting about to get more comfortable, Sylvester remembered the batch of freshly caught pokemon within his arsenal. "Say...would you be up for a quick battle? I don't think it matters who wins, I just want to help one of my new pokemon get into the habit. We don't have to, though, if you don't want to." Pondering on his answer, Sylvester's hand itched to reach in towards the pokeball within the inside of his trench coat, though it would remain at his side.

[ SETH ] The world was a big place, and Seth wasn't from a very large part of it. Just a city in a region not well known. When he had heard of Professor Birch's charge to help with his research, Seth spent days trying to convince his parents to let him come here. He had eventually persuaded them, and he had certainly left quite a lot behind. He would go back someday, though. Someday. "Oh, a region you've probably never heard of..."
When the topic changed to Shinx and electric Pokemon in general, Seth was happy to focus again on her fur. She had relaxed, laying on her tummy in his lap and looking at things curiously, be it the new acquaintance, a rustling in the grass, or just her rural surroundings. At the mention of a battle with her, however, Seth's hands went around her middle and drew her slightly closer, "I, uh... Haven't even caught any other Pokemon yet. I only just got this one, really." His apprehension at a battle was clear, and he made it obcious that he had literally no experience with it as well. If the new guy--what was his name? Dammit Seth, you didn't even get the nice man's name. Idiot--pressed the matter, Seth would probably go along with it. He might have an anxiety attack, but that was a different matter.

"I have a pokemon I just got as well. Come on, it will be fun. Win or lose, your pokemon will always grow from the experience in a battle. You can't be afraid to come short every once in a while." Knowing it was pretty rude of him to resume pleading for the battle, Sylvester just couldn't help himself. He spent plenty of time loafing around, and now there was a perfectly good trainer in front of him whom he could battle with.
"I'll use just one of my weaker pokemon, and you can use your Shinx. What do you have to say to that?" Preparing to reach in his coat for the appropriate pokeball with his most recent catch, Sylvester listened carefully to his next words. Was he ready to test himself in his new career as a trainer, or wimp out due to a lack of confidence?

[ SETH ] How was he supposed to reply to that? It was a perfectly reasonable thing to ask--they were trainers, after all--and he was making an effort to be polite about it, too. The logic was there, and that's probably what got Seth to agree in the end. Seth had a weak Pokemon who needed trained up, and this guy was willing to go soft on him. Why shouldn't he take the opportunity? "I guess..." Seth gently released his Shinx, letting her stand on the grass on her own now. Seth himself scooted back to give her room.
Looking up at the guy, Seth seemed anxious and expectant. He certainly wasn't going to be taking the lead--he hadn't even been in a single battle yet. "Just one or two though." Seth knew Shinx probably wouldn't be able to handle too much at one time, even if she did win the first battle. He was also curious what kind of Pokemon he would use. Would it be something that was strong against Shinx? Something from around here, or somewhere else? What kinds of Pokemon were even available around here? Seth had so much to learn, and he was unendingly eager to learn it. this would function as a first step, he supposed. An important milestone: his first battle!

Grinning now that the boy had accepted his challenge, Sylvester knew it was only customary that they give one another their names. "I almost forgot to tell you, my name is Sylvester." Lobbing the pokeball that he had reached inside his coat for, Sylvester summoned one of the newest additions to his pokemon team. After the red silhouette would form, manifesting before him would be a fire type pokemon known as Ponyta.
"This here is Dasher, he'll be your Shinx's opponent for today. I won't use any other pokemon than him, since it would not be very fair." Placing the empty pokeball back into place, Sylvester began to spout out orders towards his Ponyta. "Dasher, charge his Shinx and hit it with tackle twice!" Now that their battle was underway, Sylvester could observe the skills Seth possessed as a trainer. Even though the boy was new to this all, that didn't mean he was completely clueless—did it?

[ SETH ] "Oh--right! I-I'm Seth." The boy stood and gave the Pokemon enough room to do their thing, fidgeting nervously. Seth felt awkward about trying to be social; why was it so hard to talk to people he didn't know? It was so much easier with his friends back home. He just needed to bond with some people here, he supposed. What better way to do that than in a Pokemon battle?
There was a new Pokemon, as well. Seth hadn't seen whatever this 'Dasher' was yet, and he actually remembered to pull out his pokedex this time. Focusing on the electronic voice, Seth was distracted for a second. Faster than he expected, the battle was underway. His anxiety shot up as he suddenly needed to react--and fast. "S-Shinx! Dodge and hit him back!" It wasn't the most specific, but Seth was having a hard time right now. He tried desperately to remember what moves his Pokemon had. "Ice Fang! Use Ice Fang, Shinx!" The little Pokemon got out of the way of the first tackle, but couldn't manage to escape the other one. Without flinching too harshly, the Shinx fought right back, biting down with freezing teeth on the Ponyta's side.

Watching his Shinx dodge out of the way upon command, Sylvester grinned with a hint of joy about him. This wasn't going to be some battle where the trainer didn't know how to use his pokemon, so it would be a relatively even match. Though, with Seth's choice of action, he wondered just how fair it would be.
Deciding not to have his Ponyta try and dodge the bite, Seth had his Shinx attack with an ice type move. While Sylvester's Ponyta seemed to whine from the blow, there looked to be little damage done from his current standpoint. "Dasher, use tackle once more and drive Shinx into the tree!"
Recklessly listening to it's trainer, Dasher began sprinting towards the tree as if it were going to tackle it for some reason. However, once within close proximity, Dasher would shift so that the Shinx would take the brunt of the impact. Would Seth and his Shinx be competent enough to turn this around against the Ponyta's favor? Sylvester had hoped so.

[ SETH ] Tackle her into the tree? Rude. It seemed like a weird command, too. Risky at the least. Risky? Oh! Seth had been trying to focus on too many things at once, his anxiety hindering his concentration. Now, in the heat of battle, he was slowly becoming accustomed to whatever he was feeling, allowing him some sort of focus. He saw an opportunity with the risky move his opponent was making, and his Shinx didn't look very oblivious, either. The little electric Pokemon seemed ready to pounce, though this was likely from waiting for a command than planning out her own attack.
In a battle like this, with such low-level Pokemon, Seth assumed the best route would be to attack outright. Any support attacks would eat up time when damage needed to be dealt. Squashing the uncomfortable feeling of hurting a Pokemon, Seth commanded his Shinx why Dasher charged at her, "Get out the way, Shinx, then Tackle and Ice Fang!" The Shinx obeyed at just the right moment, dodging--albeit clumsily--when the Ponyta got close so that it would run into the tree instead of her. The movement was quickly followed by the Shinx ramming her body into the other Pokemon's, then biting down with frozen teeth a second time. The Shinx even let the momentum carry her away a couple feet, looking accomplished.

As Dasher rammed into the tree, Sylvester was relieved to hear Seth commanding his Shinx to dodge in the nick of time. While it meant to cause his pokemon some harm, it was still very gratifying to know he was helping Seth by giving him some battle experience.
However, what happened next wasn't very much expected. Dasher hurt himself, staggering back from the tree as Shinx gave a mean tackle—causing Dasher's legs to buckle under the weight of his body he could no longer hold up. With another bite from the pokemon's Ice Fang on top of it, even Sylvester knew that the battle was over and done. "Wow Seth, good job." Recalling his pokemon back into it's pokeball, Sylvester pocketed it within his coat before looking towards the other trainer.

"I didn't think it would end that quickly. Congratulations on the win, though. Your pokemon must be pretty strong." Gazing towards the path that led towards Oldale Town, Sylvester thought of a great idea. "Hey, why don't you come with me to Oldale Town? You're going to have to head that direction to find the route that leads to Patalburg City, so why not do so alongside company?" Expecting him to agree, Sylvester gathered himself, as well as his things before standing in the direction he was ready to leave towards.

[ SETH ] The Ponyta looked so hurt by his little Shinx's attack. Seth cringed as it fainted, "Is it gonna be alright?" Shinx had the polar opposite reaction, looking up at him and wagging her tail. She was panting from the exertion, but couldn't look prouder of herself. He returned her to her pokeball just like his opponent had with his fallen Pokemon, though with an insincere "good job" thrown in. Seth blushed fully when he received the same compliment, feeling very uncomfortable. He really needed to get used to battling.
There was a shrug at the comment, suggesting Seth might agree. His Shinx was still a baby, but it looked like she was going to grow fast. He looked supremely uncomfortable, but loosened up a bit as the conversation changed. He did, in fact, need to get the Oldale Town. Seth needed to explore the entire region, and going through the gyms was what he thought the best way to do so. He knew the first one would be soon. "I'd be glad for the company." He attempted a smile, but didn't quite succeed. His words were genuine, but at best he needed time to adjust to the situation. Despite the glaring difference in their experience levels, Seth seemed to have made a friend in Sylvester. The first of many, he hoped.

Making their way towards Oldale Town, they were already a ways through Route 101, makign the trip there shorter than it would have been. Hoping that Seth would not lag behind by much, Sylvester hurried his pace so that they could get there in a timely manner. After all, he had made this same trip many times in the last two weeks, and it was actually beginning to get a lot easier for him. Perhaps the same could not be said for Seth, but his youth would likely provide him with an abundance of energy.
"Well to be honest we aren't very far, even now it's actually just right around this..." As the route took a bend, the two of them resumed following the path with Sylvester as the leader, making their way around the route's corner and seeing Oldale Town in the short distance. "...as I was saying, we're almost there." Maintaining his pace, Sylvester turned to look over at Seth in order to ask him a question. "So, did you want to stop here and get some rest? I was going to go ahead. You're more than welcome to follow, but I need to hurry so I can't wait and rest."
Hoping to hear an answer soon, they had already begun to encroach the limits of Oldale, an elderly couple waving at the young trainers as they passed by. Whether ot not Seth managed to go with him, Sylvester made his way towards the route exiting Oldale from a different side than where they had entered. This would take them straight to where they wanted to be, though it would take a bit more time than Route 101.
